Nintendo 3DS: Resident Evil The Mercenaries 3D Save File Issue Wasn’t To Prevent Secondhand Sales

Capcom has announced that the controversial decision not to allow users to delete their save file on Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D wasn’t a move by the company to prevent secondhand sales. Capcom say that it’s not a “secret form of DRM”. It’s just the way they designed the save system to work with the intense arcade gameplay. Do you agree with Capcom’s explanation?

“In Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D, all mission progress is saved directly to the Nintendo 3DS cartridge, where it cannot be reset. The nature of the game invites high levels of replayability, encouraging fans to improve mission scores. The save mechanic ensures that both original and unlocked game content will be available to all users.

“Secondhand game sales were not a factor in this development decision, and we hope that all our consumers will be able to enjoy the entirety of the survival-action experiences that the game does offer.”

According to Capcom, the arcade-style gameplay lends itself to this save system. “There was no intention of lessening the experience of the game. “Essentially Resident Evil The Mercenaries 3D was treated like an arcade fighting game. You unlock characters, levels, etc and they just stay unlocked as they would in an arcade machine. There was no hidden motive to prevent buying used copies. It’s not some secret form of DRM. It’s simply the way we designed the save system to work with the arcade type of gameplay.”

“Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D consists of 30 time-based missions, through which the player unlocks skill upgrades as they progress through the game. Anyone purchasing a copy of the game secondhand would have access to all the missions and skills that the original owner unlocked, in addition to the content that was available to the original user.”

  1. That’s all fine and dandy, but what’s wrong with letting people delete their save files if they want to? If they wanted to discourage it why not just make it difficult to do? The game style if no reason to remove the option.

  2. Ha! That is all nice and lovely Capcom but shouldn’t the consumer have the right to delete their save file if they so choose?

  3. Wow. I actually don’t know where I stand on this. If Capcom did this to accommodate some type of future spotpass update strategy, it might make sense… *shrugs*

  4. I don’t agree with their explanation at all. If they wanted to invite replayability by encouraging players to beat existing high scores, they could just use an online leader board; even if it’s a list you have to download on a frequent basis.

I also don’t agree with having characters already unlocked for potential future players who buy used copies because some of the fun in playing games is unlocking things for yourself. I don’t get it.

  5. I disagree with Capcom, so what if a player unlocks ALL the content, sells it to a used game place and someone where to purchase it, you’d have all the content, and only “high scores” to beat with all the missions already avaialble, and nothing to unlock yourself. I see it as a stab against those game places since the new owner cannot have their own glory completing everything for the first time themselves (such as finding the unlockable content within the missions themselves).

PS, can’t Arcade machines be turned off and the scores reset? I don’t remember going to an arcade and putting in a quarter and the game is not on the level other than the first.

  6. Bull. Crap. 3DS owners don’t want an arcade game. They want a 3DS game. One they can reset and sell if it’s crappy. I’m not interested in RE, but I wouldn’t buy this game even I was because this kind of behavior is intolerable.

  7. I honestly don’t care cause I already have it and put 8 hours of play into it already in the past 2 days. it’s really an awesome game, ive been playing co-op with my friend for hours with local and online. Both work really smooth, besides gamestop isn’t letting consumers buy it used or trade in anyway so what are you complaining about. just buy it new for yourself.

  8. I don’t get it. Can someone explain me how does it work?? For exaple: If I don’t have any possibility to get Spot Pass content, and I finished Single Player Game, then I can’t play it anymore?? Or is there something in this game I can return to after completing it?? I need answers…

    1. I haven’t played my copy yet but I believe that once you’ve finished the single player campaign you can select which level you want to play.
