Nintendo 3DS: Nintendo To Give Away Twenty Free 3DS Virtual Console Games To Existing Customers

Due to the unexpected nature of the Nintendo 3DS price cut Nintendo has announced that it plans to give away 10 NES and 10 Gameboy Advance Virtual Console games via the Nintendo 3DS eShop. To get these free games all you need to do is connect to the Nintendo eShop at least once before 11:59 p.m. Eastern time on August 11th.

  1. Starting Sept. 1, Nintendo 3DS Ambassadors will be able to download 10 NES Virtual Console games at no charge and before they are available in the Nintendo eShop to the general public. These games, including Super Mario Bros., Donkey Kong Jr.,Balloon Fight, Ice Climber and The Legend of Zelda, are slated to become paid downloadable games, but Ambassadors get them early for free. Once the paid versions of the games are posted to the Nintendo eShop later in the year, the updated versions will be available to Ambassadors for download at no cost.
  2. By the end of 2011, Nintendo will provide Ambassadors with 10 Game Boy Advance Virtual Console games. These include games like Yoshi’s Island: Super Mario Advance 3, Mario Kart: Super Circuit, Metroid Fusion, WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgame and Mario vs. Donkey Kong. These games will be available exclusively to Ambassadors, and Nintendo currently has no plans to make these 10 games available to the general public on the Nintendo 3DS in the future.

      1. thank you, I was really shocked to hear the below sales for Nintendo on this console, I thought sure they’d have a hit with the Nintendo 3DS obviously not Wow! Sorry Nintendo I was really pulling fir you guys. P,S, Can’t wait till the WII U comes out.

  1. Dunno about other countries, but a rough estimate comes to like $200 AUD value for the games in Australia. And considering we get a $100 price drop, it’d be more beneficial to take advantage of this deal while you can.

  2. I’m still annoyed but…. I’ll get over it. It’ll just make me wary of buying another Nintendo console until I see the competition. I do that all the time, but after the Wii and DS I bought the 3DS pre-maturely and now I’m regretting that hasty decision.

    1. Don’t be! Assuming the NES pricing is the same on the eShop as the Wii Shop Channel, then the10 NES games you’ll be getting are a US $50 value. And judging by the GBC pricing (about US $6-7), the GBA games will likely be US $8-10, meaning the 10 free GBA games will likely be an $ 80- $100 value. That means we’re getting $130-$150 in free games, while the price drop is only $80. We saved $50-$80!

        1. @ aRedMoon – Pretty much. I guess you could say there’s at least ONE game in there for everyone. Personally I’m hoping some of the remaining unnamed titles are JRPGs or somethings.

…I will settle for Action RPGs.

        2. I am always willing to play classic NES titles, and the fact that they are portable and one tap away now just makes me a happier guy. Now don’t even get me started on the GBA titles, I haven’t played a single one of those 5 listed, so many hours of free game play are ahead of me.

      1. I was hoping they weren’t going to hit us all with the black and white ones they sell for 3 bucks on the E Shop that ain’t worth a dime. Thank you for the heads up I am really looking forward to playing all the good games we played when we were kids. Can’t wait.

      1. Do you need to have an club nintendo account before the 11th or do you just have to go on the eShop by the 11th? And how do you know you are considered an ambassador?:)

          1. Haha thanks, and now I do have club nintendo account and I have a huge ar card on it’s way to my house so I’m very happy:) thank you:)

  3. I really hope the ten unannounced games do not suck. I’m desperately hoping for Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga and The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap for GBA, while I am somewhat hoping for Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones for GBA and Metroid for NES. I hope all the NES games are 3D Classics (like Excitebike).

    1. I read the official release, we will get 10 NES games, with FREE upgrades. So I think they are 10 titles they are looking to make 3D by years end. Click the source and read the official!

I wonder if there are choices involved or everyone gets the same 20 games. It’d be pretty neat to select 10 of our choice, but I’m definitely not arguing with free 10 games.

      1. It sounds like the “update” is to allow for multiplayer mode when the games are officially released for general public downloads. Ambassadors even get the games early.

  4. Do you still get the games if you buy it BEFORE the price drop but turn it on and use it after the price drop?

    1. can you please give a source? I need to know if this applies to NOE because if it doesn’t i will actually DIE.

  5. Naaaaaw, I wanna be an ambassador but I’m too poor to buy one before Aug 12 *sad face* I want them juicy GBA’s.

    1. doesn’t mean anything really…
just whoever has been loyal to the company in buying the 3DS early and who is going online with it :)

    2. Well other than making us feel special, it would technically mean that we are Nintendo’s Ambassadors for the 3DS… as in, we represented the 3DS to non-3DS users. :P …everyone else after the price cut would be considered non-3DS ambassadors due to them not supporting it in the first place.

  7. Nintendo is so awesome right now. They realized the launch sucked but we STILL bought 3DS’s day one (including myself). They even called us loyal which I’ll be damned if we arn’t. But this is so amazing, can’t wait.

  8. Unless you had the intention of buying the 20 specific games Nintendo is offering you’re saving nothing. If they want to make it up to us, refund us the difference!

    1. Depends what the other titles are, SMB 1 I might have bought depending on it’s release. LoZ 1, that is a must buy, would have gotten it either way. If they did release the GBA titles, I would have bought Metroid, Mario Advance 3, Mario Kart, and possibly Warioware. So 5 titles, probably around 5.99, so 30 bucks about, so that’s about half the difference in my eyes, and we don’t even know the rest of the titles.

    2. Best Ambassador reward would’ve been a refund of the difference…ultra unlikely, but the best. A more likely one and what would be a nice opt-out for other Ambassadors would be $150 in Shop credit to that some can buy what they would like to buy.

    3. Except for the fact that Nintendo would be losing money if they refunded us the price. The price drop actually HURTS Nintendo (they’re hoping to make money off the software sales… this is a Sony-tactic, but unlike Sony: Nintendo’s pockets are filled from Wii and DS sales).

By giving us 20 software titles, we earn about $130-$150 worth of software titles compared to the $80 price drop… meaning: Because they’re software titles, technically Nintendo doesn’t lose ANY money by giving it to us. :P

Besides, you could also argue: The $80 price drop would be worth it if we were planning to buy every 3DS game from the price drop until its next price drop. ;) Remember that it will eventually drop in price in the Holidays, so even the price drop purchasers would feel cheated eventually too. :P

  9. i hope i can get the original kid icarus or kid icarus of myths and monsters. havent played them in years

  10. Heya I was wondering do I have to have club nintendo account before the 11th or do I just have to go on the nintendo eShop by the 11th? Thank you:)

  11. Oh, so all of those GBA games will be exclusive to Ambassadors then? Lucky me, though I’m happy with my early purchase either way. I hope they release The Legend of Zelda Minish Cap later on even if it’s available to the general public. Man, this is exciting, especially since I’ve yet to buy any NES VC games. Somehow I was waiting for them to remake a few of those games, so this comes as a nice bonus for me.

  12. Isn’t it funny that Nintendo can give out free games when they can, buy Sony only gives out free games when they get hack xD. (Not hating on Sony since I fo have a PS3.) Hopefully I can get a 3DS in September for my birthday. :)

  14. With MY luck, my 3DS will say I’m not a Ambassador and refuse to give me free game.

If it DOES, its a great deal for me, ‘cuz I got my 3DS for my birthday, 8 days after the launch in Canada.

  15. I ordered my 3DS yesterday, 1 day before the price drop was announced but i’m actually really happy now because I would rather have the 20 free amazing games. I really wasn’t expecting the list of free NES and GBA games to be this good! Super Mario Bros, The Legend of Zelda, Mario Kart: Super Curcuit and Super Mario Advance 3… Hell Yea! Thanks Nintendo! :P

  16. What do they mean by updated versions of the Nes games? Will they be 3d remakes like excitebike? Also I forgot about the Gba games being put in the eshop. Two games I’m looking forward to are Minish Cap (of course) and Super Mario Advance 4: SMB 3. Super Mario World wouldn’t hurt either. I wonder if third party companies will put their GBA games up there as well.

  17. That’s a great lineup for free games! At least for me, SMB, TLOZ, Metroid, and Yoshi’s Island are more than enough…

What I’m really concerned about is of becoming an actual Ambassador. I live in Central America, but I can access the eShop and dowload games and apps; but I hope Nintendo confirms this to be available worldwide and send us some sort of notification for Ambassadors…

I hope Nintendo gives us more information about this soon!

  18. anyone has gotten any clue if it will be available in south america??? i`m almost thinking of buying another 3DS. As i have a cosmo black i`ll get an aqua blue “ambassador’s edition” 3DS as well. just gotta confirm that these free games would be available in South America, Brazil to more specific.

  19. How do u become an ambassador? i bought my 3ds the day it came out and i have club nintendo connected i live in the USA sooo can i get the free games?
I love nintendo never regretted buying my 3ds early!

    1. Connect to the eshop before Aug. 11. I don’t think you need to purchase anything but just in case they do have Pokedex 3D and some videos for free.
