Nintendo 3DS: You Can’t Offer Free Software Such As Demos On The Nintendo 3DS eShop

Apparently third-party developers are unable to offer free software on the Nintendo 3DS eShop. Developers can offer software at a minimum price but are unable to give away things for free. The limitation explains why third-party developers are unable to offer free demos similar to the ones found on Xbox Live and PlayStation Network. If they wish to offer a demo then it will be priced at 200 yen ($2)

    1. I wish the minimum was less as well. I mean, I only have £1 on the eShop, and that’s not enough for anything. If any developer was going to release a game under a quid, they’d have my money immediately, whether or not it was any good…

        1. yeah I agree, besides, why would we want twitter or fb on the 3DS.. it’s not an iPod, and never will be thank god

          1. actually you can get them from nintendo off of spot pass instead of the eshop personally this sucks but yeah you can get free stuff from spotpass.also its not out of the question either the answer is don’t know

              1. Only for SELECTED WiiWare games, no retail game demos what so ever, not ot mention the fact they they aren’t permanent and there is a tiny range…

            1. $2 for a demo? That’s about half as a real game on the e-shop

I thought Nintendo were supposed to be looking into demos etc?

                1. Sorry, but:
Would be cool to sell 2€ demos of retail games and give out 2€ discount when you buy the game. Now just find a way to minimize the effort..

              1. well that’s lame. maybe they can give people who buy the demo a discount equal to or greater then the cost of the demo if they buy the full game. even then, it sounds like a hassle.

                1. That only show how much the third party developers dislike Nintendo. If they offer demos for the DS in the Nintendo Channel at Wii, and there’s demos of WiiWare games at the Wii Shop Channel, I see no reason not to offer free demos for the 3DS.

Oh well… Nintendo will outstand even without that content. Nintendo franchises are just enough to sell well. Not for nothing its software is the most selled in the world. Mario, Pokemon and Zelda respectively.

                  1. No, it said that the developers can’t offer anything for less than $2 because of the way the eShop is structured for third-party developers.

                    1. So that’s why we got screwed and can’t get Flipnote (and us adopters can’t even submit entries for that Zelda competition :()

                  2. So Nintendo can offer all the free stuff they want, but thir party devs can’t? That sucks. If I remember correctly, the Wiiware offer free demos, doesn’t it.

                  3. Well that explains why we aren’t at least getting the Prototype version of Legends 3 either. (Although knowing Capcom, they’ll probably come out and say it had nothing to do with this)

                    1. Why would Capcom ever release a prototype of a game anyways?

That’s just baseless speculation and needless hope-raising.

                      1. Uh, the Prototype was planned for release since before the actual game was. It was supposed to be a demo to gauge interest in Legends 3 so they could decide whether the game itself was worth releasing.

That being said, I think they had announced that they’d be charging for the Prototype before the eShop even launched, so I doubt this was what stopped them.

                    2. What’s Nintendo’s problem with being a control freak? It’s an archaic philosophy that will be their end, unless they learn to expand past their own property.

                      1. No I wouldn’t call Nintendo a control freak when Microsoft apparently puts 3rd Parties on a much tighter leash than Nintendo does from my experience at least.

                      1. Actually, if I had to PAY just to get YouTube or better yet Flash so I can sit about on JTV and a multiple (or even individual) IM app–things that should have honestly already be on there or on there by now…hell, I’ll do it.

it’ll be worth more than the Nintendo apps such as the Calculator, the diary, notebook or whatever they have in apps for like $1.99 and stuff.

                    3. Get rid of those goddamn japaneses, please. Nintendo must a change of directors, really. Those old-minded-men aren’t doing well.

                      1. Those “old-minded” men will be the biggest force stopping Nintendo games from ending up on Apple IOS devices. While I agree that this eShop debacle should be fixed, the people in charge are very important for the future of Nintendo.

                      2. And while were at it, let’s get rid of that goddamn black man running our country, please. That old minded man isn’t doing well.***

***I hope my obvious sarcasm was obvious. I in no way hate black people! I love people of various races, cultures, and beliefs. And I am not an anti democratic/ pro republican/ Obama hater!

                        1. Dude those ‘Japanese’ are the ones who created all of those awsome games. They may be closed minded to 3rd party content but please have some respect for them.

                      3. Why are some of you blaming Nintendo for the charged demos? Shouldn’t you be blaming third-party developers since it’s their games? But why are you complaining now when XBox Live and PSN have been doing this for the last 5-6 years? You guys are crazy…

                            1. You dont pay for demos on XBLive either. All games released on live have a trial demo. You get to try out a snippet of the game, and then pay for the full game if you enjoyed it.

In this case it hurts eShop in the long run cause with out trying a game not as many people are going to buy cause seeing someone else play it is totally different then how you play it.

                                1. That’s funny… I remembered my brother paying a demo on XBL. Or maybe my memory is failing me, and that it’s something else… But, whatever, demos should not be paid. They’re just stripped-down versions of the full game.

According to the source, the unnamed New Love Plus demo is a tool to transfer saves and not actually a demo. The only problem here is Capcom’s Nazo Waku Yakata, which must be paid ¥200/$2 to play the first chapter of the full game. And with only one really having a price tag, it’s kinda hard to say if they’ll do it on every demo or not. Also, it’s only in Japan, somehow. Let’s just hope NoA doesn’t do this and instead set the demos for free.

                                2. but….on psn and live demos are always free. i think the main issue is that it sounds like nintendo is forcing devs to charge money for everything, including demos. aren’t demos supposed to be free? isn’t that the point of demos? to try something for free before you buy it?

                                  1. It does suck that they’re charging for something that should be free, but according to the article, only third-parties’ demos are the only ones that have a price. But why third-parties, though?

                                    1. Because NINTEDO is RESTRICTING them from adding free content to the eShop. For once it’s not actually the 3rd parties’ fault.

                                      1. Let’s not just jump the gun here, dude. Like I said to Quentin B. (@Krimsun), the unnamed New Love Plus demo is a tool to transfer saves and not actually a demo, and that the only problem here is Capcom’s Nazo Waku Yakata, which must be paid ¥200/$2 to play the first chapter of the full game. And with only one really having a price tag, it’s kinda hard to say if they’ll do it on every demo or not. Also, it’s only in Japan, somehow. Not that I’m defending Nintendo but it’s logical to think that it might be only this game that will have a price on. We’ll just have to wait and see.

                                      1. In regards to Netflix, I would assume Netflix Pays them to give the app. After all, another platform to attract would-be subscribers.

                                    2. demos the reason some people buys games they are interested in nintendo needs to fix this i am not the type of person to look a trailers nintendo if u want your fans to support u then listen to what ur fans r telling u.

                                    3. I thought Nintendo said that demos on the 3DS are coming…as in, they aren’t allowed yet. So maybe this will be changed soon, and it’s just a current protection while they set up the demo section.

                                    4. Come on Nintendo. I think they need to start taking the threat from Apple more seriously. I’m not saying give in to apple, I’m saying be more friendly to third party developers and improve the eshop
