According to Forget The Box Nintendo is apparently approaching software developers and offering them assistance in porting and publishing software from iOS to the Wii U so that it can be played on the Wii U’s touchscreen controller.
Nintendo is also apparently looking to launch a digital e-reader type service where you can download books, magazines, newspapers, comics, and other publications to your Wii U console. These publications would then stream to your Wii U controller’s touch-screen.

As far as I know, Nintendo hasn’t really said much about how far away from the system the remote play will work. Of course, everyone is hoping for the greatest distance possible, but that still doesn’t cover Apple’s on-the-go market.

I never understood the value of “trophies” or “achievements”, Yeah, so I’ve run 1000 miles on GTAIV big deal…. if I want to tell someone I’ve done something important like beat a superboss, it’s MY achievement when I beat Ruby Weapon on Final Fantasy VII, didn’t need any “trophies” for that.
I mean I know you can contrast and compare with your friends but I think only like 4% of people actually do that.
Achievements are a mess – but they do allow something fantastic and are truly a useful tool.
They can be used to nudge players into new directions they wouldn’t immediately think of (A trophy for Ico [in the Ico / shadow of the colossus relrease earlier this year] for instance had one saying completing the game in under 2 hours which is you play it straight seems impossible, but through that I found this fantastic design of shortcuts making the cool looking way of seeing previous rooms in new areas as a hint of how to quickly jump sections – really cool trophy integrations).
They can be used to propell a story choice (take the moment in Mass Effect 2 where you choose what happens in the geth, and how much more awesome it would have been if whatever choice you made got an achievement “villian” to show truly what a shitty position it is and that there really wasn’t a good way out.
And they can be used to create a dialog between the creator in the player that without them they cannot (which is why Xenoblade Chronicles has an entire achievement database built inside it for that exact reason). Hating on it as a tool simply because current uses of it are mostly generic is really short sighted. [And anyway one of the reason they suck so much right now is that Microsoft says they have to meet a certainn number of achievements and points and cannot go over or under that amount – which then bleeds into the other releases on cross platform titles – which is a mistake Nintendo could avoid).
Those achievements/trophy help with replay value and it really does work. I can tell you countless times on long I’ve stayed up just to earn one achievement.
This is what people don’t get. In no way can it hurt to put achievements in. I remember beating games 100% on my 360 but staying up those extra hours just to get a few achievements. I think if nintendo did offer an achievement system (maybe medals cause 360 has achievements and ps3 has trophies) people would see how it actually adds to the value. In a way achievements are like motion controls, people think they’re a gimmick but in hindsight it actually does add to the experience
Speaking of medals, I saw a comment on an IGN article months ago which said about a medal system where you could choice three of them to put on your Mii character so other people can see them – That would be awesome!
Thats funny you say that because Mercenaries 3D has a list of 50 medals you can unlock. So I am sure they can do the same thing just make it so your friends can view them.

I like Nintendo’s effort to innovate, but I was thinking they would do something more original than buy software rights from another company. As long as they don’t make too much of an investment in outside resources, I’m fine with it. The more features, the better. But, as of yet, we don’t even know if this article is true.

I don’t really think the controller is that innovative, actually. Tablets already have a foothold in the consumer market. To me, the Nintendo DS was more innovating. In fact, I think the Wii U’s basic idea is just a home console version of a DS. I’m not saying that the Wii U is a bad idea, I just don’t think it’s as innovative as it really seems.

Aside from being able to play the game on the controller itself, that’s really where the innovation ends, unless “innovation” mean taking a bunch of well established ideas and concepts and putting them all together. Tablets sell well, Nintendo made a controller that can be used as a tablet. The DS sold well, Nintendo put a secondary touch screen in the controller. The 3DS has a gyroscope, the tablet controller has a gyroscope in it.
The inovation isn’t what you make. It’s what you can do with what you make. You can do a lot more with a Wii U tablet controller than a 3DS. e.g., the ninja stars and the golf in the Wii U trailer.

Adding more to a product doesn’t make the initial product “half-assed.” Just because they add more to it later doesn’t mean the initial product wasn’t worked on enough. Case in point, no Nintendo games announced that use the second circle pad peripheral. They’re third-party games. That should tell you that it was another company (Capcom) that pushed Nintendo in that direction so that the console would better suit their games. They can’t add all ideas right from the start. That’d just be a waste of money and it’ll just be too much. I doubt Nintendo expected that Capcom would suddenly shift to the 3DS with Resident Evil and Monster Hunter.
even MGS, and Kingdom Hearts 3D are going to use it, 2 heavy hitters that arent CAPCOM and no its not mandatory, but it makes the game play better, if the initial console was done better konami & Square wouldnt even support this 3rd part addon that will enhance the experience. call it complete. but when nintendo themselfs start using it, itll just prove it (imnot saying nintendo sucks, because my top 5 games consist of nintendo games) but add ons on all their consoles makes them seem unfinished.
Then anything is unfinished because anything can have something else added onto it. Half-assed means they didn’t put much work into it and the end result is crap, but the 3DS is great on its own and you can see that Nintendo is doing a lot to promote it, adding software titles, etc. The 3DS can be great /without/ the second circle pad.

Have you ever played a Virtual Boy? Just because people didn’t like it and there was not enough third party support doesn’t mean Nintendo didn’t work just as hard as they should’ve. They just made a wrong choice, they didn’t do a half-assed job. Plus, look at the technology back then. The Virtual Boy was WAY ahead of its time, so it didn’t look good, therefore leading to low sales and low third-party support.

Reason 1: The PlayStation 2 is the biggest selling home console of all time with over 150 MILLION units sold, that’s just under double what Nintendo’s best selling home console the Wii has sold. It’s main reason for such huge success, it was DVD player. The same reason the PS3 is now climbing the charts now that Blu Rays are becoming cheaper and more popular.
Reason 2: Neither the Wii, XBOX 360 or PS3 do any of their features half-assed. Y’know what I use my PS3 for mostly? Netflix, watching Blu Rays and yes, playing games too but rather than own a Blu Ray player or connect my Laptop to the TV every time I wanna watch a film or stream a series on the big screen, I can run it off my PS3.
and yet (taking this outside the living room) the nintendo ds IS the biggest selling console of all times, and it doesn’t really do much more than just gaming, so whats up with that?

I agree on Apple-Nintendo alliance. To think Nintendo would crush apple is a really dumb thing to say. Your 3DS can’t make phone calls or even us 3G the iPhone can. Your WiiU can’t leave the house. Your iPhone can. No matter what the 3DS or WiiU can do, it’ll never “crush Apple”, they have Macs and Macbooks as well as iPods, iPhones and iPads. The WiiU and 3DS are gaming devices that could massively benefit from exclusive Apple support in the same way Apple would massively benefit from supporting Nintendo.

I don’t see film editing being such a huge hit on something like a Wii U, or any other gaming console. People have their video files on their computers, for the most part, so it’ll be far more convenient to use it there rather than bring it over a gaming console and edit from there because that could be rather tedious.

I believe their comments were reserved for mobile games in general, not iOS specifically. Not that they’d need to port iOS games anyway; it goes without saying, but virtually every single game Nintendo has made beats the living crap out of any iOS game. Why settle for less?

Wii U is a pivoting point for Nintendo.
The Tablet, Tablet games (Ported), HD Graphics, better online support – All brings them up to speed with current Gen game consoles, allows them to take back / compete with “dime a dozen” games (iOS), and converts the primary WiiU console into a huge DS (Duel screen: Larger is your TV, Smaller is the Tablet)
This places Nintendo in a strategic position to defend and progress their product in a wide variety of markets, while maintaining their core gaming model.
I doubt they’ll crush the competition, but they will leave them speechless as they show Nintendo’s ability to compete against massive corporations like Microsoft and Apple.

If this is true, then this is a very different Nintendo we’re going to be seeing during the Wii U era. The old Nintendo always reminded everyone that first and foremost, they are a video game company, and always seemingly dismissed ideas of them offering other services besides video games. I think they’re realizing now exactly how competitive they have to be, not just with sony and microsoft, but also with apple, google, and all these different e-books and digital pads. Nintendo started out in a blue ocean with the DS and Wii, and they’re realizing it isn’t a blue ocean anymore.
I’m really liking this competitive Nintendo. I hope they really go out of their to try and get more mature themed games on the Wii U. Rockstar games on the Wii U would be a nice start.

Hm, this might be interesting if the controller can use SD cards. Think about it, iPhones can go up to like 64 GBs or less. SDHC cards still have a long way to go, so we’ll see 64 GB SDHC cards sooner or later. But still, 32 GB isn’t something to scoff at, and I’ll be honest and think that if homebrew developers were bored enough, they can port over the entire App Store to the Wii U controller, and call it a tablet.
The thing is that the Wii U controller is sent the information from the actual console to the controller. So, if they homebrew anything, it would have to be the console. The controller might be as useful as a brick when the Wii U isn’t even on.

I agree with you. I love Nintendo, but i admit i enjoy apple, sony and micosoft. I’ve had to deal with fanboys in my life. They say the Wii U will suck and they haven’t seen it. Also, if it is easy to develop for Wii U, the games won’t be so expensive.
Though I see this a pure rumour mill I think it would be more utilized for game guides.

Sorry Popeye… but I will purchase the Wii U as well as the apps that the Big N will adding and more… MLB.TV, e-magazines (especially Nintendo Power), social networking (like Facebook), etc. Nintendo means business. The Wii U will be more than just a video gaming system… it’s a whole lot more.
