Legend Of Zelda: Skyward Sword Art Style And Story A One-Off, Wii U Zelda Will Be Different

The Legend of Zelda producer Eiji Anouma has revealed in the latest edition of Game Informer that the Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword art style and the storyline will most likely be a one-off and that we will be seeing something completely different for Zelda Wii U.

“With Wind Waker, the graphics were suited to handheld gaming. Also the game ended with Link embarking on a journey, so it left open the possibility of what comes after the game. With Skyward Sword, positioning it as the first Zelda game means everything else connects to it and comes after it. It becomes a little bit difficult to do something else within that world and certainly much more difficult to do something that comes before it.”

  1. Good, it gives new installments room to grow and breathe when you make each entry unique. One of the things that made Skyward Sword as epic as it is, is indeed the art style. Even if it’s different from the E3 Zelda on the Wii U I can’t wait to play it.

          1. Ha! This isn’t much of an improvement, but fair play! We know each other now. You realise you’re a mega fuck up weirdo though too right? Glad you found the cess pit that is this forum? I don’t even know why I comment here either HA!

  2. The Troll Who Owns A 3DS

so the reason Wind Waker was cel shaded was so they could make the sequels for handhelds…huh….

    1. I don’t think that was what he meant. I think he meant after Wind Waker was finished it left open the possibility of future instalments, and the cel-shading made it possible to play on handhelds which is why that distinct design continued. He was using it to contrast with how Skyward Sword’s style and setting are not able to continue in the same way.
So Wind Waker wasn’t made so it could continue on handhelds, but after the fact it was a possibility – unlike Skyward Sword.

  3. As long as they keep refreshing the series and invent new things im fine.
I really like the art-sytle in Skyward Sword and would really like to see
    a HD-Cel Shaded Zelda.
And of course, they should take the new leveldesign from Zelda SS
    and refine it.

  4. Im happy to see that graphic style go away. Don’t get me wrong it looks great for it’s style and all but I just love twilight princesses way more!

Other then that I absolutly love SS, my favourite part is just flying around on my loft wing kinda like riding around everywhere with Epona in TP.

    1. I agree, Twilight Princess’ art style was fantastic to me and really fit the mood of the game. I really hope that they bring that art style and feel back.

    2. Playing Twilight Princess again now. I could disagree more. It’s ugly and way too dark compared to Skyward Sword. The world of Hyrule is best expressed in a more colorful setting.

      1. The graphics in SS are way to bright! I wish you could tone it down in the game rather then on my TV which fucks everything else up.

  5. Oh, this is a disappointment. I really liked the art style for SS, one of my favourite styles so far. There were several questions still left unanswered after SS well that I would have liked answered in a sequel. Oh well.

  6. Well, if the next game doesn’t look like WW, SS or the demo which was essentially TP with more pixels, then… an entirely new art style? Whoa. It’d be pretty interesting to see what they could come up with after all this.

However I do hope it looks like what we saw in that Wii U demo because… I could just explore for hours on end in environments like that.

    1. The Wii U demo wasn’t just Twilight Princess with more pixels… it had more realism than that. It had higher res textures, a much larger poly count, more particle effects (namely, fire), and other improvements. I see what you mean, though. They both look somewhat rugged and dark. I certainly hope they use that too.

    2. must agree the wii U demo was amazing. twilight was dark but I loved the graphics, but in skyward sword the graphics fit it. I would not have it any other way. but i would like to see some bright but amazing and clear graphics in the next game.

and a happy ending all the endings of 3d Zelda games have been sad. In ocarina of time he was sent into the past again in majoras mask he lived with skull kid and did not find navie in wind waker hyrule was washed away in twilight the mirror was shattered in sky ward sword the people of sky loft did not join Link and Zelda on the surface so they were separated from their friends as there birds left them. also because only Link and Zelda went to the surface they would be the ancestors of all the humans on the surface meaning the their children would have no one to marry besides sibling and that is just wrong.

ps: i loved the romance between Link and Zelda wish they would do so more often

  7. To be honest , that art style on SS is suck , it just make me feel I’m a kid , everything is perfect it’s only the art style , on TP much more better

  8. Consider SS is the latest installment, just want to ask two things for any new Zelda.
    1. Dialogues can be fast forward (like TP/PH/SP etc) even is first time play.
    2. Use warp point directly (like TP/MM etc) or auto destination (like WW/PH).
Keep the gameplay than no issue with others.

P/S IMO please change Link’s voice.

  9. What they should make, is the Prequel to Minish Cap. Because in the beginning, it talks about a sword given to the hero by the picori, and thus far we haven’t seen in, so it would be a perfect game to make, Wii U or 3DS

  10. I am ok with them cutting the design as long as they keep up the stellar level design and the new art style continues to be bright and vibrant – I do not want them going back to a darker OoT/MM/TP tone unless they truly push it to make it as detailed and awe inspiring as games like shadow of the colossus – otherwise the block/semi-detailed darker tones doesn’t work for me asthetically.

  11. I think Nintendo will give us a big surprise at E3 2012. In my opinion the Wii U will be a big flop when it doesn’t start with incredible games. SSB 4 and Pikmin 3 is just too little.
So the surprise: what about the Majora’s Mask remake for Wii U?!
Anouma told us the next big Zelda should arrive in about 3 years. But are remakes included here?

    1. I agree, Nintendo is going to need something big in order to have a successful launch. They’re also gonna need to price it reasonably and set a good launch date. I can’t wait to see what E3 brings..

P.S. Has anyone else noticed that Link doesn’t name his Loftwing? It needs name, lol.

      1. never thought about that not naming the loftwing
but anyway I must agree that for the wii U they must have it reasonably priced
my family won’t be able to buy it if its like 300-500 so hopefully Nintendo will keep it >300

ps if anyone wants to contact me to tlak on such matters they have to do it on this page as I am very careful who i give my email to.

  12. I am hoping the graphics will be inspired from the graphics from Twilight Princess and the Wii U demo :3

  13. NOOO!…oh well….I was hoping for a second installment to the link of SS(sort of like MM) …since there were a lot of missed opportunities…seriously, Nintwndo could have done a lot more with birdriding and the such

    1. and a happy ending would be nice too. all the endings of 3d Zelda games have been sad. In ocarina of time he was sent into the past again in majoras mask he lived with skull kid and did not find navie in wind waker hyrule was washed away in twilight the mirror was shattered in sky ward sword the people of sky loft did not join Link and Zelda on the surface so they were separated from their friends as there birds left them. also because only Link and Zelda went to the surface they would be the ancestors of all the humans on the surface meaning the their children would have no one to marry besides sibling and that is just wrong.

ps: i loved the romance between Link and Zelda wish they would do it more often

  14. [SPOILERS]
Skyward sword as the first game is pretty interesting and still a little enigmatic to me because it was implied that the desert already had a technologically advanced (timeshift stones and the wind bellow? looks advanced as heck if you ask me) and thriving culture before Link found it.

  16. The next Zelda will have graphics like show in the Demo. Then the next Zelda wil have a colorfull art in it again.

    is a cycle.

    1. and then they’d have a new reason to show off the power of the Wii U I mean what says New Hyrule better than a new lick of paint on the old favorites, a new liick of paint I am reffering to a new art style.

  18. I’m not surprised, considering the average Link only gets 1 game. It would be cool if Majora’s Mask got a direct sequel, and as for art style, more like Twilight Princess graphics but less dark and gloomy.

    1. Actually most Links get two games.
      1. NES Link had 2 games (the two NES games, durr)
      2. SNES Link got 4 games (ALTTP, LA and the two Oracles)
      3. N64 Link had 2 games (OoT, MM)
      4. Toon Link received two games (WW, PH)
      5. Second Toon Link only got one (ST)
      6. Minish Cap Link appeared only on that one, as do the other two Links from the Four Sword Trilogy.
7.TP Link got only one game too (TP, durr)
      8. SS has just appeared so that Link also has only obne game thus far.

See? Only the most recent games (those which are too recent to have a stablished arc) have one game, but many Links had received more than one appearance thoughout the franchise history, the winner being SNES Link with four games.

      1. I’m not too sure if the Link for both of the NES games are the same Link, or if the Link for the LttP, LA, OoS, OoA games are the same Link either. Last time I checked, that hadn’t been verified.

        1. Apparently that’s how it was handled in Hyrule Historia, even though the Twinrova sisters have to be alive for that to work.

          1. Do you meant he recently released timeline? Because though it stated those games are in the same timeline, it didn’t state how many years in between games they are.

Unless you’re referring to something else, cause in that case, I’m not sure.

        2. in my game manual for collectors edition the nes ones are the same “after Ganon was distroyed, Impa, princess Zelda’s nurse maid, told link that a sleeping spell had been cast on princess Zelda…”

  19. I would be nice to see games about how Hyrule was formed into the provinces as seen in Ocarina of Time and Twilight Princess, because Skyward only divulges the finding of the surface. Also, there needs to be a game that connects the Links and Main Villians from the 3 parallel Timelines into one final game, which would result in the reincarnation of Demise and the True Heroes of Time fighting against him. Still awaiting the progress of Majora’s Mask 3D, so it would be nice to see some progress photos on that.

    1. That would be cool to see all 3 Ganon’s attacking Hyrule at once in a climactic battle.

Also, to answer your Majora’s Mask 3D question, they wont make the remake until they’ve made a new Zelda game for the 3DS.

  24. Twilight Princess graphics are just okay. You people are giving it way too much credence. Skyward Sword was the best in the series so far.

  25. hmmm games taking place before skyward sword? does sound difficult… what about “the legend of zelda: Surface wars” or the “legend of zelda: Era of Hylia” ?

anyways I’m totally stoked for some HD link. just the fact that it’s gonna be HD is enough of an innovation for me!

  26. I think SS better as a one off. Despite the art style is the best in the series so far, it is UNIQUE, and shuold be one time used. It’d be pretty interesting though to see what they could come up with for the Wii U zelda.
I hope it won’t be TP art style it’s way to dark for me.

  29. Well if the timeline that was released recently is any indication, I’m sure they could just make another split in the timeline for if you got a ‘game over’ at the last boss lol.. Ridiculous imo.

  30. I’d like to see a sequel to SS. Maybe how Hyrule and all the nearby provinces were established and what became of Skyloft after a number of years. Because it’s eventually supposed to evolve into the City in the Sky, I’m guessing, so what happened that caused it to change so much, and what about those Oocca creatures from TP?

    1. in skyward sword the people of sky loft did not join Link and Zelda on the surface so they were separated from their friends as there birds left them. also because only Link and Zelda went to the surface they would be the ancestors of all the humans on the surface meaning the their children would have no one to marry besides sibling and that is just wrong.
      it had a terrible ending
