IGN Readers Vote Star Fox For Nintendo Franchise Revival

IGN recently polled its readers asking them the simple question of which Nintendo franchise they would like to see revived for the Wii U or the Nintendo 3DS. The readers didn’t hesitate and they voted in their droves for Fox McCloud and company to make a stunning new return on Nintendo platforms. Star Fox was closely followed by Earthbound, and a new entry in the Metroid franchise. Which series would you most like to see make a comeback for Wii U or Nintendo 3DS?

    1. Metroid isn’t a dead franchise… Neither is Kirby or DK. They’ve all gotten games in the past gens, including Wii. The rest belong on here, but Metrod absolutely LEAST. The Prime games were great and other M was tolerable.

    1. Yeah, it just can’t be touched by the people behind Other M ever again. Leave the series to Retro Studios :)

      1. James Pierce (Metroid)

If you want to know the bad story.

Nintendo was behind the story and gameplay of Other M… Team Ninja put the game together. We need to blame Nintendo for that not Team Ninja.

        1. I know that, notice how I only said “people” and not Team Ninja? If anything the series should be kept away from Sakamoto, he’s the main guy behind the game.

              1. Sakamoto made the original Metroid games, so do you really wanna stop the creator from making his own games?

      2. I liked Other M, yeah it wasn’t brill and it was quite short, and doesn’t have as much reply value as the others but I still like it.

        1. James Pierce (Metroid)

          I liked other M.

It was quite different however and quite short and did talk about the background story of Metroid.

I can’t really see an Other M sequel but I can see an Metroid Prime 3 Sequel.

        2. I could live with the story, Samus had enough Badassedness to help push through. However the story was really, disappointingly, and surprisingly short, and then you get some pics for your trouble. And a one-hit mode

      3. Fuck no. I love the Prime trilogy and all but no, that’d be pulling the same stunt Microsoft is with Halo right now and it reeks of desperation. Retro Studios have proven w/ DKC Returns that they can do justice to other Nintendo franchises outside of Metroid, it’d be a waste to force them back into solely Metroid development again.

How about we get a company that can take Other M’s formula and fix what didn’t work in that?

        1. I agree 100%. Seriously, there are already 4 Prime games. Give it a rest. If Retro wants to take Metroid up again, hopefully it’ll be something new.

        2. I never said Metroid should be the only series they make, I said they should be the ones who make it. Learn to actually read what people say. It would be nice if they made a sequel to Prime 3 so the secret ending with the ship can finally be answered.

      4. Other M was a FANTASTIC game. I’ve been a hardcore Nintendo fan for most of my life and this is one of my favorite games, ever.

The plot was fantastic and beautiful, the gaming mechanics were addicting as shit, fluid, seamless, PERFECT. The only bad parts about the game was that it was too short, too linear for Metroid, and the very end was a bummer (but the Queen Metroid battle before that is MORE than enough reason to forgive that).

  1. Calum Nicholson-Walker

    >Donkey Kong
    >Revival
huh didn’t that happen like two years ago (and a pretty damn good revival it was too, if I may say)

      1. I fully agree, Those shouldn’t even be on the list.
There’s nothing to ”revive” about those games.

BTW: I think it’s a death sin not to put earthbound on #1.

        1. 1) Starfox or F-Zero.

Earthbound needs to be on the top 5.

Now are you going to give me a death sin because I said Earthbound should not be number 1?

    1. Two star tropics games on the nes I believe they are on the wiis virtual console but them they are both pretty awesome.

  2. “Poled”? Poled? What does that even mean? In fact, I don’t think I want to know…

    You mean “polled”, right?

But anyway, Earthbound does seem a pretty obvious choice, as well as Star Fox which is popular and “missed” a generation

      1. Not many people are good spellers… The amount of times I’ve seen “bear with me” or similar as “bare with me” or similar is just…

Yes, they may be similar, but their meanings are completely different. And once I notice a spelling mistake, it keeps catching my eye… :/

                1. Fire fox is way better.

You can get an theme for your top bar ;)

So you can get lots of diffrent stuff.

Chrome maybe faster but Firefox is better.

  3. metroid, yeahs….

Hd F-zero would be epic. they’d need to get the visuals and frame rate perfect though.
F-zero would be the one game that i’d ever want to go online with. the crazy speeds will crush my mind.

    1. True that, we need a new F-Zero for the Wii U! Maybe even have 30 player online multiplayer :D And hope they keep the hard difficulty of the previous ones.Would be so awesome…

      1. 30 player multiplayer for F-Zero might be pushing it, but Yes, F-Zero needs to come back, it’s been 8 years.

  4. I’d like to see all 3 on the Wii U and/or the 3DS. Especially Earthbound/Mother since only the first one was released in the US.

      1. James Pierce (Metroid)

So you waited for about 15 years for a game and it has not arrived yet?

How about you learn Japanese and buy the game and buy a Japanese N64?

There you go, you can play Mother 3 now… however that will take a while…

        1. Mother 3 was originally scheduled for the n64 but it became a cancelled project so then they rebooted production of it on the gba. You don’t have to buy the game theres many other ways to play it *cough roms cough* and buying the game it’s self along with the other games in the series have become over exaggerated I mean seriously !? $70 for just one little gba cart!? That’s a total rip off! I just wish people weren’t so crazy about the prices of these games even though they are very beautiful games buuuuuut now I’m just getting carried away….

          1. I bought the deluxe box of Mother 3 for 390. It’s worth 700 dollars now. I think I spent the money well if the value is gonna keep raising <3 Mother merchandise is valuable because it's rare. Most of it only sold in ONE country. Mother 2 is only cheap because it sold far more japanese copies than EarthBound did (only 140,000)

  5. Earthbound for a revival? How would they revive a series like that? As it stand, there are too many legal issues to have it revive in its current form.

If they had developed it in such a way that they took out all the unlicensed references, would it water down the series too much?

Or what if they revived it in such a way that they made completely different licensed references to keep up with today?

  6. Well, personally and subjectely i need a EXCELENT Starfox game, even faster, harder, and even more fun than Starfox 64, something like and ace combat combine with Starwars scenes (like the battle in the orbit on Coruscant), and robot battle like ZOE series. The Starfox game for gamecube was not good enough and i was expecting more. I need explosions, ships, weird planets and characters, good lines of dialog, harder challenges and medals, and why not a pretty good multiplayer. I Need StarFOX back!!!

PD: Well, personally and subjectely i need a EXCELENT Earthbound game that…..

    1. I want a Star Fox revival

I agree with you 100% the gamecube games were made by different directors than the SNES and 64 games, which would explain why they arent nearly as good, but, put Miyamoto or Retro Studios (there is speculation that they are making a new star fox game) to work on the next Star Fox game, or better yet BOTH! Star Fox 64 3d was a great remake in my opinion, (it would be even better with online)
but seriousely I want a new Star Fox game, you should totally make it take place before the first Star Fox game too lol that would be great!

  7. It’s got to be Star Fox. I’m sure Retro is working on that right now. I would say F-Zero in second place. I would also suggest a Wii U version of my all time smash hit holiday classic movie, JINGLE ALL THE WAY!!!!!!

    Leave luck to heaven.

    1. I thought Retro would be working on Metroid Prime 3 sequel right now.

Retro said there making a game “Everyone wants us to make”

For retro, it’s eather Star Fox or Metroid.

The most wanted Wii U game for me is Metroid and Star Fox and even F-Zero

            1. Way to be a bitch about great news :/
Who said Metroid won’t ever come?
              And WTF? Revival?
Metroid got a current gen game.

              1. And you havn’t played MP3 havn’t you?

We need to know more about that Federation prototype ship which is Sylux’s ship.

Sylux is dead so how is he ment to be flying that ship?

        1. For the Starship at the end of Metroid Prime 3, It looks like Sylux’s ship… But Sylux was killed at the end of Metroid Prime hunters.

Sylux’s ship was a stolen Federation prototype starship so it could be a Federation Starship… but I really don’t think it was a Federation Starship…

      1. It there’s anybody I would trust to redo the star Fox franchise, it would be Retro. But I think you’re right it will most like ly be a new Metroid game.

Metroid is the perfect series to display the graphical power of the Wii U. If they can make the best looking console game of the generation on the GameCube, imagine what they can do with the Wii U.

  8. Wow.

I love star fox to tiny bits, my Dad was a massive fan of the game.

I’m a massive fan, nintendo must revive it.

Also Metroid is 3rd. I love that to bits.

    Best 3 Nintendo franchises

    1) Metroid

    2) StarFox

    3) F-Zero

All must be revived or ELSE.

    1. I think there is a diffrence between revived and resurecting a series.

Kid Icarus was dead but it was resurected recently. I won’t say Star Fox is dead but it can be revived.

Revived means not dead but I thought Earthbound is dead.

  9. Virginia Aran (Metroid)

If they don’t revive Ether Metroid or Star fox I will hate Nintendo.

Really, Metroid and Star Fox are the two best franchises.

I hope Retro is making Metroid Prime 3 sequel or a Star Fox.

Who agrees Metroid and Star Fox must be on Wii U?

    1. There already is a Metroid Prime 3. There was just a Metroid game in 2010. It doesn’t really need to be revived. But yeah I agree there needs to be a Metroid game on the Wii U.

      1. Wii U needs a Metroid game.

Also an MP3 sequel is needed. A federation prototype ship was at the end of MP3 and we need to know more…

  10. StarFox, F-Zero, and Earthbound all need revivals. The others don’t technically need to be “revived”, they just need awesome games on the Wii U.

      1. There was just a Metroid game in 2010. It technically doesn’t need a revival. StarFox and F-Zero we haven’t seen since the GameCube and Earthbound since the SNES.

            1. Virginia Aran (Metroid)

              Prime series ended.

We could say MP4 but Metroid Prime 3 direct sequel Is what I call it for now.

  11. SICKR: There’s a new trailer for Mario Tennis Open showing the special games in action. You can find it on GameXPlain and probably on Youtube ;)

  12. I agree that Star Fox needs a revival. What was the last Star Fox game to come out? Command? (64 3D is just a remake, so it doesn’t count)
Metroid doesn’t need a revival, its last game was Other M which was for me against all public opinion an awesome experience. It had an intentional focus on story obviously, but the next one could again have a lot more exploration. Combined with Other M’s gameplay it could become the best Metroid game ever.
Donkey Kong and Kirby basically just had awesome games.
But F-Zero definitely needs another game again. Earthbound would be awesome, but Ice Climbers, I don’t really know, it seems kinda pointless.

    1. James Pierce (Metroid)

      Metroid needs a revival.

We need an Metroid Prime 3 sequel to find out about that STARSHIP!

MAKE SURE STAR FOX ALSO GETS A REVIVAL!

    2. Yeah Ice Climbers is pointless. And neither Metroid, DK, or Kirby should be on their. They have came out resently. So Starfox, F-Zero, and Earthbound are the real ones that should be in the top 3.

      1. Starfox and F-Zero are 2 of the best detailed series Nintendo makes. Obviously they need a revival on Nintendo’s first HD console!

        1. James Pierce (Metroid)

Metroid is also a highly detailed series.

          F-Zero

          Star Fox

Metroid needs a revival for Wii U.

          1. Metroid doesn’t need revived!!! Plus a game for it is already confirmed to be coming. They just haven’t confirmed whether there working on it right now or not.

            1. Samus Aran (Metroid)

We know it’s coming but it needs be be revived for Wii U.

We want it soon, and it better be an Metroid Prime 3 sequel because we want to know that Starship at the end.

  13. eh, I would’ve thought DKCR counts as a revival. Just because there isn’t a new game announced every 3-6 months like with Mario, doesn’t mean the franchise is dead. Kirby still gets games every now and then too (mostly on handhelds these days)

An Earthbound revival could be interesting, they don’t really have any first-party rpgs outside Fire Emblem, but that’s a strategy rpg, not a traditional one. An F-Zero revival would be awesome.

  14. I love the way Fox McCloud at the top on number 1 is like, “I conquered Number 1, I win, everyone below me lost. Game over to everyone below me.”

  15. Kirby? Really?
I thought Kirby was doing fine lately…
I don’t know about Ice Climbers, the NES one was kinda annoying to play honestly.
StarFox seems to be the franchise I’d vote for :P loved the N64 one.

    1. I would vote for Star Fox and Metroid.

However If i can only vote or 1, It would be Starfox because we’re long due a new Star Fox game.

  16. I would love to see Retro do Star Fox by rebooting the series and having it take place right after 64. Prime is great and all but I think it should remain a trilogy. If anything I would like to see retro make a Metroid game taking place after Fusion.

    1. I don’t see how a Metroid game taking place after Fusion is going to work.

      All Metroids destroyed.

      SR388 Destroyed.

      Ridley is Destroyed.

How is a Metroid game going to work without Metroids or anything about SR388 or Ridley?

SR388 or/and metroids is what Metroid is primarly based on.

We need an MP3 sequel after the ending which had a Stolen Federation prototype Starship which is what Sylux stole… But Sylux was killed in MP:H.

      1. A Fusion sequel could work. Samus disobeyed a Federation order. They could come after her…
Maybe we could get a Metroid game that takes place after Fusion where we fight the GF (IDK how that would work without making it too much like a FPS. But, maybe Nintendo could figure something out.), learn the origin of the Space Pirates (It would be so cool if the Federation created the Pirates), and we need an actual villain who’s built up to (A mad scientist that leads the Federation, anyone???). There should be a story, but there should still be exploration.

  17. Obviously f-zero, earthbound, starfox and star tropics need revivals…the wrest of the franchises have had games not to long ago.

  18. A lot of these franchises aren’t even really dead, though.

But I would like to see all of them, tbh. For both the Wii U and 3DS.

With the success of Kid Icarus, I’d love to see a Star Fox game with similar gameplay. Parts take place in the air, others in waters, others on the ground, in and out of some kind of vehicle. Better controls, obviously. But I think it’d be cool.

Ice Climbers could be cool. I’d check it out. And Metriod, I’d love both a side-scroller and a 1st person shooter. I also want to see a good Donkey Kong game, he’s been shafted. And I’ve never really played F-Zero, but I think it’s look great on the 3DS. So I’d want to see that. And Kirby (and Sonic), well, I just think they need better games. Treat them with care. Don’t make something just for the sake of making it. Sometimes, less really is more.

  19. Metroid, Mother, Starfox, Kirby, and F-Zero ..

Mostly the mother series, I know it would be a large amount of trouble reviving it, but it would be worth it, The series was amazing and it died because of the bad advertising and the fact that it costed so much

  20. Samus Aran (Metroid)

Kirby looks very sad at the bottom, but HE DESERVES to be there because Kirby does not need to be revived.

  21. I love going through these comments and seeing people calling them selfs from Metroid characters like Virginia Aran, Rod Aran to Adam Malkovich.

    Who agrees?

  22. WTF are Kirby, Donkey Kong and Metroid doing there? All those series received new titles recently. Hell, Kirby saw 2 fucking great games last year. What a wasted opportunity for poll.

  23. F-Zero for wiiU really, I mean, I think the only reason it didn’t happen on Wii was because, top end gamecube graphics=Wii graphics, and they may have wanted to wait for a real improvement.

        1. uPadWatcher's Nemesis

When people read Star Fox, they type “Do a Barrel Roll”. Even if they haven’t played the game.

          So annoying.

  24. I’m mostly for Earthbound, but I’d love to see how the Ice Climbers would get rebooted. They’ve been in two Smash games and have had only one game (with remakes)!

  25. I guess I’m alone in wanting a new Ice Climbers game… It’s been 27 years. Although I do want to see both Star Fox and F-Zero over it. And Mother remakes would be amazing.

  26. Star Fox is a must-do for Nintendo, I can see them doing a lot with the Wii U touchscreen. Earthbound would be freaking epic, but unlikely.

  27. All I ask for and have been asking for from Nintendo regarding Donkey Kong, is a Donkey Kong 64 remake. That’s it. IS THAT SO HARD? D:

  28. The Mother series needs to be born actually! Earthbound was released in the West, but was very rare. I understand that Nintendo had legal issues, but just this, how do shows like Family Guy and South Park get away with all the things?!
I understand other people need a new game, but Metroid would be a good idea (Maybe Nintendo should work with Activision on that?) Kirby already had 2 game come out. Donkey Kong already come out, and starfox sure is cool, but does it really need a reboot?
Not many people from this new generation like those games so yah.

  29. Startropics
    Earth Bound
    F-Zero and
    Star Fox need a reboot
everything else is fine as it currently is.

(I don’t really think F-zero needs a reboot, it just needs to get more games out)

  30. Why does everyone care so much about MP3’s ending. I enjoy Metroid as much as anybody and I couldn’t care less if that was Sylux’s ship or not. I’m more interested in finally finding out what happens after Fusion.

As for the list, Star Fox definately deserves #1. I sincerely hope that’s the game Retro is working on. Seriously, Retro gave us 3 Metroid Prime games, and people still want them to make more. I’d like to see Retro expand their horizons, to try out other franchises.

Heck, if it were possible, I’ve love to see them tackle Fire Emblem. That might inspire more interest in the series.

  31. Pingback: The Public Has Spoken

    1. Why is it when I press the link it takes me to amazon for me to buy a hard drive?

I know your link is not amazon but why?

  32. Hell yeah! Star Fox on Wii U! With local AND online multiplayer! I think both multiplayer modes would be awesome for a Star Fox game on the Wii U using Arwings, Landmasters and going on foot and using a bunch of weapons like we saw in Star Fox assault. And honestly at this point I think it’s about time for Star Fox to get online multiplayer. I can see it now. Basically the multiplayer of Star Fox Assault with tighter controls and 16 people. Please and thank you Nintendo.

  33. I would honestly love to see a revival of the F Zero series. The ones on SNES and N64 was awesome and I never played the Gamecube one, but I’m sure that’s good too. Obviously, they know this series exists due to putting Captain Falcon in Smash Bros games, so come on Nintendo, we wanna see a HD version of F Zero on WiiU or 3DS at least ^_^

  34. Only Ice climbers, StarTropic, F-Zero and Earthbound fit the criteria of a franchise revival. The other had games that was released recently.
    Donkey Kong- 2010
    Metroid- 2010
    Kirby- 3 in 2011
    Starfox- 2011

Clearly IGN and their readers need to look up the word “revival”.

  35. Mother could DEFINITELY use a revival, but it most likely won’t happen because Itoi said he’s done making games. Which is understandable given it took 10 years to get Mother 3 released due to programming issues. It would be difficult for someone to take Itoi’s place. Sure, the graphics wouldn’t be hard to do since their supposed to be simple, but the story is something unique and special that only Itoi could pull off. I myself am going into the industry and would like to make a Spiritual Successor, but I know I can never make a Mother-esque game as good as him.

    1. Anyways, with my Mother wall out of the way: StarTropics Has seen next to no attention. I haven’t played it myself, but I hear it’s fantastic. F-Zero has seen very little attention as well. Very few games available for it. Given he had an anime and is in smash brothers, why not make a unique Racer/Action fighter? Ice Climbers.. doesn’t seem too worth it. Then again, Kid Icarus was the same gameplay back in the day and look how fucking awesome pit is now. Starfox could use much more attention, but he’s still getting treatment here and there.

The rest? They don’t need a franchise revival. They’re doing just fine as they’re still getting recent games. There are other franchises that could use the reboot a lot more.

  36. This is really ridiculous. Star Fox isn’t dead! It just had a 3DS game! Earthbound has been dead in North America since 1995. Please bring it back! Or at least make Mother on the 3DS.

  37. But most of them aren’t even dead… Star Fox had a release of Star Fox 64 3D not that long ago… Metroid: Other M may have been about 2 years ago but most games take like 5 years to develop… Donkey Kong is not even close to dead! Kirby had 2 games last year!!! Now the other ones haven’t had a game in a while but just about all of them have been in games like Brawl recently which is proof they haven’t died just yet….

  38. I would love to have a great Starfox game on the wii u because the series “needs” a reboot from the remake on the 3ds. I would like for them to model it after Starfox 2 even though it never got release but if you played Starfox adventures,Starfox assault, and of course command its basically modeled after Starfox 2. I hope retro remodels the series from Starfox 2 and make it better than it’s predecessors. XD can’t wait this is going to be EPIC
