Sony Admits That Nintendo Is ‘Always A Competitor’

Jim Ryan, the chief executive of PlayStation Europe has conceded that Nintendo is always a competitor, but says that Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation Vita are too different propositions. Ryan says that there’s plenty of space for both systems to live side by side quite happily.

“I think the gaming offerings of 3DS and Vita are so different right now that I think there’s plenty of space for both systems to live side by side quite happily.”

“I think over time that the PlayStation Vita will – like all consoles to – skew to a younger demographic, so there will be some collision there.”

He’s right. There’s a lot of space for games on the Vita. There just aren’t any games there.

      1. Nintedward . Wiiu . 3ds . 1991 .

it took sony 15 years to work out that nintendo id better than them :/.
aim to a younger demographics ??? cough pokemon cough.
nobody want’s to play little tilt durp deviants

    1. “There’s a lot of space for games on the Vita”

There is no space for games as it doesn’t have any onboard/included memory :P (joking of course)

    2. I own a 3ds xl and a vita and recently have been playing more on my Vita, though to be honest the only Vita games I play are small downloads. 3DS is destroying Vita with retail releases!

    1. Agree: Nintendo & Sony the yin yang of gaming. There history revolves around one another, while nintendo represent the light side off gaming. Sony represent the darkside of gaming. In rage playstation was created, & still as nintendo wanted annihilated sega out the with n64 help. They are eternal rival with no equal.

      1. nintendo actually helped sony make the first Playstation. look it up. because sony dogged nintendo out and sued them. nintendo got off clean and then sued them back.

    1. It’s funny because last time, IIRC, Sony said something about them not seeing the 3DS as something to compete against, and that the smartphone market is more in line with Sony’s target.

      1. Both Sony and Nintendo are the best.
And your mom is way much better than his mom. We did it in your bed. I know.

        1. Hello Ness

If you do not like Nintendo why did you name yourself after one of the characters from our video game “Earthbound”? Are you that big of a dick?

          -Miyamoto

          1. Nintendo Is The Best!
And Both of Youre Mother’s Are Better Than His Mom, We did it in your bed’s. We know.

      1. can...can i marry you...42

AGHHHHHH! GOT DAMMIT!!! GO JUMP INTO A PULL OF CUM. DROWN IN IT. GO TO HELL. GET REINCARNATED AS A GERMAN COACKROACH ONLY TO END UP IN MY ROOM. I TORTURE UUUUU! I CAME!

          1. Better graphics and better gameplay is better than bad graphics and good (but usually bad) gameplay. The latter is guess what? The Wii.

              1. Skyward Sword and Mario Galaxy are not “good graphics” by today’s standards no matter what you try to say.

                Nice try, though.

            1. Seeing as the PS2 is commonly regarded to have roughly 152 million sales and has sat at that for about a year, whereas the DS’s sales have risen from about 149 million sales to about 152 million this year, it’s difficult to tell.

    1. If you think Sony is better why the fuck are you here? I don’t get that, also why did you name yourself after Ness from EarthBound

  2. To all the sony fanboys stating “nintendo could never compete with the ps3 or vita”
Well seems like your hearing it from the horses mouth now
So yes sony and microsoft are very scared of nintendo and what they can do
I’m just glad their finally admitting it
Why do you think they just copy and paste any new nintendo innovation?
The most they can give you is better graphics and nothing else plain and simple.

    1. “The most they can give you is better graphics and nothing else plain and simple”
Go play Ratchet and Clank, Jak and Daxter, Sly Cooper, Killzone, Resistance, God of War, LittleBigPlanet, Wipeout, Modnation Racers, inFamous, Fat Princess, Twisted Metal, Gran Turismo and more titles before you say that, otherwise just don’t make statements like that. I would even dare to say that Sony has more IPs (that still comes out today) than Nintendo.

        1. recycling games? cough *pokemon* cough.cough super mario * cough cough. i think i got fanboyculosis.

i love both sony and nintendo tho.

          1. Yet those two games you just named are the two best selling video game series of all time. They’re recycled for that reason exactly. Imagine the video game industry without them. It just wouldn’t be the same industry.

              1. Well seeing as they’re actually such a major part of gaming history, I’m pretty sure that current gaming would not be the same without them. I mean, look at the popularity of platformers Mario created and the other genres it truly set off like attracting new audiences to sports and racing games.
Pokemon (and a few other games like Final Fantasy and the like) allowed RPG games to really make their way into mainstream video gaming in Western countries.

        2. No. Haven’t you watched or heard from their Gamecom conference? They are releasing many more new IPs, like The Last of Us, Tearaway, Until Dawn, Puppeteer and even though it’s a Smash Bros rip-off, Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale. I’m not a Sony fanboy, because I like Nintendo as well. But when I entered the Sony world, I realized that their companies are like mind-blowing. They deliver new IPs frequently and it surprised me how they can do that so fast.

          1. But back to the “orignial gripe”
I meant hardware sir hardware not software.
What are they gonna do next-gen on their console? I’m thinking nothing just better graphics
            I’m not a fanboy, I own a ps3 also HAD a 360 horrible mistake and now I’m getting a wii u.

            1. Yeah, but I really don’t care about innovative hardware on Sony’s consoles. I let Nintendo innovate me and let Sony give me games how I’ve always played them. And you were talking about that Sony only gives us good graphics, which I then replied that they give us as many unique games as Nintendo do. It’s all about the games, graphics, hardware capabilities, 60 FPS is just stuff that adds to the enjoyment even more, not really a requirement. But it’s the extra things that Sony and Nintendo both delivers great at that make me like both companies as much.

              1. Yea but you should want sony to both have innovation and great games
Nintendo with the wii u I’m pretty sure will be doing both.
I just want to see game consoles have all-around entertainment

                1. No I should not want that because what would be the point of owning the consoles if both of them focuses on the same thing? Sony focuses on the hardcore fans, Nintendo on the persons who like innovation as well as casual persons. On Wii, you have to use the innovative Wii remote + Nunchuck to play all games available, not all games give you the option of a regular controller, like Sony does. Sometimes I just want to play games regularly, sometimes I get bored of those games and want to experience new things. Is it that hard for you to understand that both of them don’t focus on the same things because their audience are different from eachother’s?

                  1. I completely agree with you, but that last question is something I have a slight issue with. If you read the article, Sony just said that the Vita will most likely end up with the same audience as the 3DS, which may indicate the future of their home consoles too.

      1. Aren’t many of those IP’s third-party, though?
Not saying they’re bad, though. I owned Infamous 1 and 2 and the majority of the Jak and Ratchet games, and loved them to death.
But Sony still doesn’t have near as many first and second-party IP’s to work off of.

            1. I looked it up, and the only big series CREATED by sony is god of war and gran turismo. But sony currently owns a lot of game franchises. But I’m looking at what they have created.

    2. Hello universelgamer

I’m glad to know that you know this, as some of the PS3 fan-boys here don’t

      Your pal
      Miyamoto

  3. “I think the gaming offerings of 3DS and Vita are so different right now that I think there’s plenty of space for both systems to live side by side quite happily.”

Except they’re not, the 3DS is dominating and humiliating the Vita.

“I think over time that the PlayStation Vita will – like all consoles to – skew to a younger demographic, so there will be some collision there.”

No it wont, because the kids dont have that kind of money.

      1. The manufacturing price will go down, but Sony won’t be able to lower the price or will lose even more money. And will most likely repeat the process the PS3 went in, and the price of the console won’t drop for over a year still.

    1. With sales, nothing to be humiliated about when the Vita has consistently better games and game announcements than the same generic and predictable 3DS games.

  4. Erm, release games for it then? And i mean unique games, not ones that are on the ps3, but not as good. Im only interested in Gravity Rush, Tearaway and Persona 4 (if we actually get it). Thats not enough for me to buy it, sorry

    1. If you live in NA, you’ll get it. We Europeans probably won’t, which is reaaally unfortunate.
Soul Sacrifice looks pretty awesome as well, same for Little Big Planet. I personally can not wait for the Final Fantasy X remake, even though it’s going to take a few years…

  5. all ps suckaz…… u aint got 3D bros… u aint got 2 screens bro… u aint got augmented reality bros….. u aint got nintendo bro…. ;)

  6. Nintendo is a competitor to you, but they’re not competing with you, Sony. They’re doing their own thing. That’s why they’re the best. They’ve got the games, they’ve got the innovation and they’ve got the guts to go against the grain and change the way we play again and again. I like Sony PS2, because it was an RPG farm, but Nintendo is where I go for my gaming fix. Leave luck to heaven.

          1. That’s why Nintendo is Gaming King….cause they are All about GAMING and creating new ways for us to experience games. Sony and Micro a a fuckin joke! Leave gaming to the pros. The ones that can create great memorable experiences. Can’t wait to get a WiiU tired of this Piece ah Shit 3. Why don’t these companies go back to making pcs and tvs or whatever else they do.

            1. Oh I love coming back to this site to read coments from people like you ;D

Oh what you gonna play on your Wii U? oh wait nothibg because there is fuck all coming for it :/ oh thats to bad….

  7. “I think over time that the PlayStation Vita will – like all consoles to – skew to a younger demographic, so there will be some collision there.”

vita owners confirmed for casual babies

  8. What Jim Ryan said is the smartest thing I’ve seen in regard to VITA v 3DS. “Plenty of space for both systems”, Now why can’t Nintendo fanboys and Nintendo Haters listen to this guy? Both systems are great and will offer there own products. I like both and people should just respect what ALL companies have to offer.

    1. I have respect for both companies, i buy both of their products and love them, but i just have no reason to buy a Vita yet, only 2 games interest me and only one of them is out.
I still need to buy a 3DS and a WiiU, the proof is there that Nintendo are doing it better as of this monent, it’ll be a long time before i get a Vita, if i do get one at all

        1. As always. But those haters are usually fanboys anyway. Then, there are people who just like to troll.

Fanboys, haters, and trolls on all sides are foolish.

            1. Rigggggggggghht, having an actual account makes you all the more authentic when you have the typing skills of an 88 year old.

        1. Which magically don’t interest Nintendo fans, yet I bet if they were all on the 3DS, it’d be interesting then.

They’re so full of shit, it’s hilarious. After Gamescom, nobody in their right mind could use that pathetic line anymore. You’d have to be a crazy person or a gigantic brand loyalist to legitimately think Vita isn’t getting big games that interest a wide audience.

  9. Notice how they don’t mention Microsoft. Heh so Nintendo is good at making fun n interesting games for everyone. while sony is good at quality games for adults

  10. I would like to see this, both Vita and the 3DS sharing the same market, but not in a rivalry competition thing. Or maybe not THAT MUCH competitively. I remember back then when people kept comparing Super Nintendo with Sega Saturn, and they pretty much were almost the same (with maybe better first party titles for the Nintendo console, but still) it was something really good, because games were launched to both consoles, and almost everybody played the same thing. I wanted that to happen with 3DS and Vita: developers making the same game, but with different ports, and earning more profits than just launching to one hanheld. That, however, won’t ever happen because of Vita’s superior graphics (so their games wouldn’t run as smooth on a 3DS), but just imagine them both living in harmony on the market =D

  11. I wish all the folks at Sony had this approach of handheld coexistence instead of whatever it is that Jack Tretton does. I’d really like two dedicated handhelds to thrive in the face of those claiming the death of such devices.

  12. vita is doomed but that’s cuz there aren’t any games (other than those that are out) but if that weren’t the case then vita will tie with the 3ds, plus the fact that you cant choose the service provider you want makes it more doomed, expensive memory card, a 4gb sd (standard, mini, micro) memory card can range between $5 to $10, a vita 4gb memory card is $16 to $20. sony should let u choose aside from at&t any service provider, that may save is partially, more games will save it more and prices on storage devices should be less, those factors will save it not much but i’d say 45% survival rate (hey, at least it will survive like this), price drop for vita is asking too much and its not likely they will

  13. I’m surprised people still respond to Aeolus. Don’t people realize that his biased opinions mean nothing? Oh and, for all you guys saying that the VITA is going to fail, shut up. Don’t become a sad bitter man-child like Aeolus, who has such a pathetic life that he has to prove it by talking shit about pieces of plastic and electronics.

  14. I like how the news here gives me a calm feelin, like as if the tension between the two companies has subsided some

  15. i got my vita yesterday for a good deal, fucking love it. 3DS hasent been touched in mad time… lol still havent beaten mario 3D land or zelda xD
