Team Ninja Wants To Work With Nintendo On Another Metroid Game

Team Ninja’s Yosuke Hayashi claims that he and his team are still close to Nintendo designer Yoshio Sakamoto. Both Hayashi and Sakamoto are directors of the controversial Metroid: Other M for Wii. According to Hayashi, Team Ninja wants to work with Nintendo on another Metroid title. Whether it be a sequel or remake, should Team Ninja develop another Metroid game?

“Unfortunately Metroid is kind of out of our [Team Ninja] league as it’s Nintendo’s game, but we’re still in close touch with co-creator Sakamoto-san, so we want to do something with him moving forward definitely. It really depends on what he wants to do with the game first.”

        1. It’s the only actual serious IP Nintendo has to be honest. Starfox and F zero would be to if they actually bloody made the games!

                1. OK Serious IP: Metroid, Fire Emblem, Custom Robo, F-Zero, Golden Sun, Legend of Zelda, Metroid, Sin and Punishment, Star Fox, and Golden Sun

              1. WTF? Mario games are more “hardcore” than most FPS out there. have you ever played the Galaxy series or Sunshine? I’m betting that you haven’t. I’m also betting that you wouldn’t even get past the first level without dying.

                1. Yeah but that’s changing now. Since Mario and Zelda are the most popular franchises, Nintendo is making them more casual and less hardcore. Just look at NSMB 2. It’s painfully easy. Or look at Skyward Sword. The amount of hand holding throughout the game is unbelievable, and quite frankly I found it insulting as a veteran player, and I’m not saying that to be controversial.

                  1. Skyward Sword did hand-hold a lot, but the fact was that the combat was much deeper and more difficult than the button-mashing from the previous games. (I’m not bashing the other games either. The others had better puzzles than SS did.)

                    1. Ah,comba.howcouldIforgetaboutthecombat?Afterall,itasthemostimportantandmostemphasizedpartofthegame,right?/sarcasm

        1. That wasn’t Team Ninja’s fault. That was Yoshio Sakamoto’s fault with his horrible script writing. Team Ninja just made the game under Nintendo’s supervision.

    1. PERFECT idea. Something where gameplay may be more important than exploration (although they still need to make more interesting worlds than Other M) and also where you an really just turn the sound off and not listen to the people.

    2. If a Metroid game came out for the 3DS, I would want it to go back to the 2D original style (As I think it fits better on a handheld) and so I wouldn’t want Team Ninja working on it. I would like to see the Mario team work on a Metroid game (so bringing their 2D NSMB series-style of game play to the creation of a Metroid game like it originally was) and get Team Ninja to work on a Mario title to bring their different views and use of 3D environments into a Mario game. I think the blend could be fantastic on them.

  1. As long as they don’t try to focus on Samus, I’m fine. The other Metroid games gave you minimal story, but they were still some of the greatest platformers on the market. JUST GIVE ME MY SECRETS AREAS AND HIDDEN POWER UPS.

    1. Minimal story? Actually, no.

Nintendo was smart with the story. Basically gave you the option to follow the story or go through the game blasting away at Aliens.

The story is in the lore.

  2. As long as Sakamoto does not write the story I’m down for another glorious looking Metroid game. And fix the damn controls! ಠ_ಠ

    1. If it wasn’t for him, Super Metroid wouldn’t be among the strongest stories in the Metroid series. He wrote Super Metroid among the other Metroid games, not just Other M. And the controls are actually fine.

            1. So am I.
They should make another 2D game, It would be enough if they released it on the eShop.
A new game by the Retro Studios would also be amazing.
But PLEASE don’t let Sakamoto write another story D:
              But PLEASE

      1. Yeah the dialogue was amazing such as : THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY

        1. Don’t forget “ADAM ADAM ADAM ADAM ADAM ADAM ADAM ADAM ADAM ADAM ADAM ANTHONY ADAM ADAM ADAM ADAM ADAM ADAM ADAM ADAM ADAM ADAM ADAM OH GOD IT’S RIDLEY I WANT MY MOMMY ADAM ADAM ADAM ADAM ADAM ADAM ADAM ADAM ADAM ADAM ADAM

    1. In what way was Other M casual? And there’s nothing in the pipeline, it was just an expression of interest. Jesus, read.

        1. ^THIS

The gameplay was really decent, which we have Team Ninja to thank for. It was the story and characters that made the game terrible.

          1. The gameplay was far from decent or epic… it was 2.5d not even full 3d. The puzzles to figure out where an item was, or heck just items in general were laughably easy. It took me months to find the items in super metroid. With Other M it took no more than a week… that is pathetic. Give the game back to rare or something, they did a far better job with it than Team Ninja. Everything about Other M was su par to every single Metroid game thats out.

        1. So if you like a game then it’s not a rehash? And if you don’t like it, it’s complete bullshit, same of the old rehash shit?

          Double standards…

But the odds are you aren’t the real Aeolus, so disregard this…

        2. I don’t get how the 2 sequels to Metroid Prime and Mario the lost levels aren’t considered a rehash to you but everything else is. It’s like your opinion is a fact or something

    2. Great, this idiot again. Other M was casual, it just wasnt as good, i think you need to brush up on your gaming knowledge

      1. Calling him an idiot when you’re the shithole claiming to beat God of War 3 in 5 hours is absolutely fucking comical.

        1. But i did beat it in 5 hours? The game is very short. I played the game, then did it on hard, then finished up on an trophies i missed and challenge of olympus which wasnt that bad. All of that didnt take me 5 hours, it took me 2 playthrough and about 20-30 minutes on the challenges, but playing the game start to finish only took 5 hours. Still platinumed it in about 12 hours

        2. Oh, and theres people on youtube who’ve beat the game start to finish in under 2 hours. Im hardly a god at gaming, im just good at the game, and its SHORT

  3. Am I the only person who enjoyed Other M? I mean sure, it wasn’t as good as the Prime series was, not by a longshot, but it was still pretty damn enjoyable.

    1. Absolutely not, I loved Other M for all its quirkiness and for every awesome part that people forget about. Melissa Bergman is Nintendo’s best new villain in years.

      1. MB got almost no development. She’s very boring. I hardly consider her a villain. What did she really do that’s groundbreaking?

    2. I loved the game! It was amazing, in my opinion, but not as good as Prime. Sure the controls were slightly faulty, but they could be a lot better with the WIi U GamePad.

    3. Bing Bang Boom! I loved Other M! I was surprised when I heard it got some controversal reviews. I think the game is great and I loved the storyline. Boop Beep Bop!

    4. It was alright, but not up to the standard it shouldve been, its the worst Metroid game in my eyes, i love Metroid

    5. I don’t own it, but i think it’s alright at least gameplay wise. My friend owns it and he’s a metroid fan, he didn’t like it much, especially the story. For one thing, Samus didn’t really seem like Samus especially the Ridley part.

    6. Of course not. I enjoyed the gameplay, and although it pains me to relive the story and characters, I would play it again. But the game was bad because it was basically a huge middle finger to the rest of the franchise and to Metroid fans everywhere.

It’s one thing to give a bad game credit for the things it actually does right, and another thing when you defend a bad game calling it “the best ever” and ignoring all the cons.

  4. Gee, I dunno, the first one was okay IMO but I’m not sure if team ninja should be trusted with another metroid game. On one hand they can learn from their mistakes and bring their offerings to make a great game. On the other hand they totally screw things up and we never get another metroid again because of negative critasism. Yeeeaaaah no, lets just leave it to retro.

    1. The environments were another problem with the game, though it’s minor. You see, they were plain and uninteresting. They were so linear and lacked any sense of exploration. Fuck, even Metroid Fusion had more levels than Other M.

  5. Team Ninja did a great job with Other M! If you’re complaining about the story, that wasn’t Team Ninja! That was Yoshio Sakamoto who decided on that. With that said I would love to see Team Ninja work on another Metroid title, almost as much as I would love to see Retro take on another Metroid project.

  6. I think Other M was a great game. Not to usual Metroid standards, but with some modifications, it would easily be up to standards.

    1. Sakamoto wrote the story. And why do people complain about the story? I thought it was powerful. (Though, admittedly, slightly far from Super Metroid)

    1. I liked the story, but a lot of people complained on Samus’ personality changes during certain scenes.

Samus lands on the bottle-like ship to see her former commanding officer. As foreshadowed by Metroid Fusion, Adam is going to die in this game. When he does, Samus acts sorta like a cry baby when doing so, which theoretically makes sense since she explains Adam was like a father to her. Also, as this took place after Super Metroid, Ridley is finally gone for good, relieving Samus at last. However, upon meeting the Ridley clone, she enters a traumatic state because of her childhood experience where, according the manga, Ridley and his Space Pirates killed everybody on her home planet when she was a small child before the Chozo took her in.

        1. expanding her character more would have been fine, but Other M felt like a betrayal of what people had gathered on samus from the previous games. she virtually wets herself and breaks down crying when she finds out she has to fight Ridley, despite the fact that she’s beaten him like 5 times before.

      1. No. There’s absolutely no excuse for Samus’s breakdown in Other M. Sure, it’s fine if it happened in the past, but by now Samus shouldn’t have breakdowns because she already faced him and defeated him more than once. In Other M she acts as if she saw Ridley for the first time.

    2. Story was fine but Samus was basically a push over, which she isnt. Also her encounter with Ridley, i understand she has PTSD, but she killed him like 4 times already at that point.

Personally, i just didnt like the combat and overall design of the game. I like being able to point my gun, and be in control of what im doing but i just felt like i was just stand there and tap the dpad and 2. But the overall look of the game was blergh, it looked lazy, and ugly, when Prime 3 looks gorgeous

    3. I’m sorry, but twilight has a better story than this game. It’s full of loop holes and contradictions. None of the character are compelling or even likable. Please, watch this. It’s a bit long but it will make sense to you if you choose to be open minded.

  7. Even though what team ninja did with it was good (apparently they didn’t work on the story??), I would still like retro to do another one.

I get the feeling that they just have dollar signs in their eyes, and having their name on a metroid game probably brought in more money than any of their ninja gaiden titles.

  8. Hey other M haters Nintendo made the story and Team Ninja helped out look it up stop hating on team ninja for no reason….

      1. The combat, i like being able to be in control of what im doing, but i was basically just tapping 2 and the dpad over and over, it was boring.
Also, just the overall design, i didnt like it. I understand the Wii has graphically limitations, and overall, it looks “solid” but the level design, the monster designs, it just looked ugly, when i expect a Metroid to either be beautiful or unnerving in its level design, and did more creative.

Yeah, i could whine that Samus was a push over, and took orders, and that Samus already killed Ridley 4-5 times so why did she freeze up (yes i know she has PTSD, i know he killed her parents on K-2L). But all that didnt really shun me away from the game, the gameplay did, it was just Ninja Gaiden with out combis and a gun

        1. I felt Samus’ breakdown was acceptable for that very reason… he’s killed him five times, but he just won’t leave her alone, and no matter how she tries he always comes back to remind her of everything he took from her… I’d forgive anyone for a breakdown for that.

And I felt the combat wasn’t perfect by any means but I died on several occasions, especially some of the boss battles, and some of the enemies actually did require more thought to their defeat… I could argue that the Prime series was much the same, all you had to do was point, shoot and strafe, and the enemies would die, but it was still fun.
The only parts I didn’t like were those awful first-person find-the-shiny-hiding-I-spy styled bits, they were just frustrating.
And personally I thought the design was just fine, especially the enemy design, there were some beauties in there.

So I guess it’s largely a matter of opinion.

          1. Oh god, i hate those parts, where the focus point is like a tiny dot and it never seems to find it -.-
I think i just prefer the 3D games to have you aim. Primes combat isnt perfect, i would love to see a mix of Prime and Other M, that would be insane, but i think the combat in Other M would be more suited for a 2D game, it just felt weird in 3D.

And the breakdown wasnt THAT bad, but it was a little OTT, but only people who knew aboht Ridley and Samus’ family wouldve understood, the character development needed to be there seeing as this was pretty much Samus’ first big speaking role, and where the story really drove the game. Id love to see a Metroid based on K-2L and show her vunerable side their, i think that would really add to her character, and non Metroid fans would be drawn into it, rather than not understanding.

            1. Because Ridley beating the crap out of you game after game didn’t show Samus as vulnerable enough as it is?

We don’t need these details to be spelled out every damn second of the story. It’s like she’s talking to a child high on weed every time she opens her mouth! And for Samus to suddenly experience the trauma in such a regressive fashion does NOT speak of good storytelling and good “character flesh-outing.” The trauma Samus experienced was back when she was a child. By this point, she shouldn’t even be reacting in the way she did back then. That just ruins all the story integrity that was established in prior Metroid games. A key rule of storytelling is to NEVER backtrack on what you’ve established. Never, EVER do that. Even if Samus were traumatized AGAIN by Ridley’s appearance, she shouldn’t have been shocked to the point where we needed a long ass cinematic about how she can’t fight anymore. There had to have been a better way to show her trauma at this point without resorting to depicting her as the same child she was back then. Because she’s NOT.

  9. I loved Other M but here is what I did like and didn’t:

Like : No Life orbs after enemies are killed making the game harder.

Not Like : Creature design didn’t work for me much, they looked too childish compared to the overall story and atmosphere.

    Like : The story

Not Like : Samus portrayal, she is not a pushover in any way, she is not that weak even if she was traumatized, and she is not that short!

    Like : Boss fights

Not like : Some sequences where you had to walk slowly…would be better with actual cinematics there instead.

    Like : Veteran mode

    Not Like : MB showdown…

    And so on…
Make the music a bit more original like Metroid Primes than another Hollywood wannabe music.

    1. Even though enemies didn’t drop health, you could recharge missiles when you had the chance and I may be wrong, but I thought it also recharges your health.

  10. I think other M was a great game, it let us know more about Adam, and made Samus more human, if they made Samus more girlish its ok, she still kicked Ridley ass.
The bad part of the game is the duration, i finished it in 5 hours (100%), but anyway it was great, i loved the cinemas it was like a metroid movie.

  11. Yes please. People whine about Other M but it’s the story and cut scenes they dislike which were scripted by Nintendo. The actual game itself is brilliant and a real carry on from the 2D titles. Let them make Metroid Dread for the 3DS.

    1. Now that i wouldnt mind! I think TN would do better making a 2D Metroid, with classic Ninja Gaiden on the NES influences.

  12. The way I see it, all they need to do is fix up the targeting for missiles and scanning, and IT SAMUS SO MUCH AS BREATHES TOWARD A MONOLOGUE SOMEONE NEEDS TO GET KICKED IN THE FACE. I liked the gameplay, and the story wasn’t really that bad. If you ignore the fact that the people that Ridley was killing (surely not a spoiler after 2 years?) were her friends from before she was a bounty hunter, it was pretty basic Metroid stuff.

  13. The music really needs to be better. I can’t think of any music I actually remember, besides that piano thing after you beat the game, but nothing else!!!!

    1. They went for an atmospheric approach… there was enough sound in the environments to not have to be heavy on the music. I personally liked that, it was more cinematic, like an old Alien movie.

        1. You guys are ridiculous. The Prime games are the closest thing in essence to Metroid games than the load of crap Other M was. Prime games knew what Metroid was all about, but Other M only tries to be Metroid in a superficial sense.

  14. The gameplay they developed was incredible, but no hidden areas, no secret power-ups and Adam blocking your way every time… I do want Team Ninja to make a new Metroid Game like Other M, but only regarding graphics and gameplay!

  15. It better be in the style of Other M (Gameplay wise). I want a good story that attaches me to the characters, and I also want more freedom to explore…Other M was too linear on its level design. Make it difficult. If Nintendo makes another Prime style game, I won’t buy it.

  16. I say yes, but ONLY ON ONE CONDITION!
Make sure that the ONLY thing that Team Ninja handles in the next Metroid, is the combat.
Other M’s combat was 2.5D done right, with the exception of missile launching.
The wiimote on it side? Baaaaaad idea, for most, solely due to the missile thing, even though I got used to it and enjoyed the game.
Let someone else handle the storyline, and the level design.[Let’s face it; the areas felt too cramped compared to past Metroids. Not enough to explore and discover]
    But the combat?
TN could do that, no sweat.

  17. If they are going to make a 2D Metroid game they should stick with it, none of that clunky going into first person to fire missiles. I don’t know how many time the Wii didn’t register that movement.

  18. I think what they did with Other M could definately work with the Wii U’s controls. I think that could allow for smoother controls than Other M’s. They also need to improve the story. I liked how they fleshed out Samus in Other M, now they just need to make the story more interesting instead of trying too hard to make it dramatic like Other M.

Still better than the lack of story we got in the Prime games.

    1. I think you’re totally right. I loved Other M. It really took me back. The gameplay was absolutely amazing, what they did with like 6 buttons. Imagine Other M 2 for Wii U. The TV is always in side scrolling mode, the touchscreen on the controller is always first person mode. It would be super awesome. Lift the controller up between yourself and the TV and move it around to “scan” for hidden areas.

    2. So if the story doesn’t mindnumbingly ejaculate a ton of exposition in your face then it’s not really a story? Cuz that’s what separates Other M from the Prime trilogy. The reason why you didn’t think there was a story in the Prime games is that you were too busy being Samus Aran to realize there was a story going on. Most stories have the player be an outside spectator looking AT the characters and how the story plays out. But in games like Portal, System Shock 2, Bioshock, or the Prime games, where none of the story is being explicitly told, you’re playing out the characters on your own, and ultimately the story is told through your actions. That doesn’t mean there isn’t a story. Just one where you’re the one experiencing it as opposed to watching it from the audience.

      1. It’s all a matter of different tastes. I don’t have a problem with that. My personal preference is that I like being told a story, which is why I like RPG’s so much.

  19. DWraySweZ(Nintendo Geek for Life)

I liked Other M as a game but not as a Metroid game. It lacked something that Even original Metroid had and that’s exploration. I think that Samus was weak, but the story was intriging enough to play to then end. The boss fights were epic but as a Metroid game it was the worst yet, but as a game it was good.

    1. It lacked more than just exploration. It lacked the basic story integrity of Metroid altogether, and before anybody yammers off about how Metroid never had a story, well GUESS WHAT, IT DID.

  20. Metroid other m was mediocre but if the learn their mistakes n get someone tohandle story n voice acting then by all means try again.

  21. Other M was pretty good. People blame Team Ninja for turning Samus into a “whine girl.” However, wasn’t Nintendo the one responsible for the story and stuff? They wanted to change one of their franchises and give it another direction and new life. Those people have no right to complain about Nintendo not changing up their games when those gamers themselves refuse the change.

The only thing I hated about Other M was that someone told you not to use your equipment. Other than that, I liked it better than MP 3.

  22. NOOOOO!!! other m was the worst metroid, and that was when team ninja was good. just look at how bad ninja gaiden 3 is!

  23. I would gladly let Team Ninja take Metroid for another spin.

As long as they forced Sakamoto away from the project and slapped him with a restraining order so he couldn’t get within five hundred yards of it or communicate with the team.

  24. Actually, I am definitely all for another collaboration. Of course, the game must definitely NOT BE LIKE OTHER M. AT ALL. NO FUCKING WAY.

Let’s get something straight though: Other M’s stupidity was all Sakamoto. Not Team Ninja. The point is, it really doesn’t matter what outer company works with Nintendo on Metroid because the problem lies not with the outer company, but with Nintendo itself.

    1. They should do a 2D Metroid for the 3DS, like a Metroid/NES Ninja Gaiden, that would work ALOT better. Leave the home console outings to Retro or another company

  25. Sebastian Mårtensson

Yes please, bring me an improved Other M and I’m all game! Storytelling, narrative and game length should be improved. Don’t have that long cut scenes and make the overall game much longer and the game world bigger!

  26. Oh god what’s with all the people screaming TEAM NINJA DIDN’T DO THE STORY on comments that don’t even mention the story. Did it occur to anyone that maybe, just maybe, people didn’t like the gameplay that much either? First person mode wasn’t fun for one thing. The rest of the gameplay was mediocre. That said, opinions. Some people seem to have liked the gameplay. Fine then. Just think before you post, not everyone is an idiot that thinks the story is Team Ninja’s fault.

    1. No, I didn’t like the gameplay either. But I’m still open to Team Ninja working on a Metroid title again. Just…probably without Sakamoto this time around.

  27. Oh, and another problem I had with the game: unskippable cutscenes. What the heck was up with that? Were they actually trying to torture us? Forcing us to see the cutscenes won’t make them any better!

  30. i gonna say this and a lot of you may disagree, you cant be a bad-ass unless you go though some trial like samus in other m with her emotional trail, you cant keep bottling you emotions forever, its like a carbonated drink, she relived her past, got whiny and got emotional (yes she is full human with chozo blood in her and humans have feelings) but that was the point before she steels her heart and becomes the samus we all know and love. its the same with dante from DMC, young and uncool looking, you cant run before you can crawl, its a golden rule, you cant be a calm and collected (in samus case) before and after, you have to release your emotions before you can move on. that is what other m is and team ninja should make another metroid game, let retro studios make an f zero cuz we need one, new and not innovative but online with 29 other people, more tracks, custom tracks, more custom machines and all characters from f zero including those on AX.

  31. Please, I loved Other M’s controls. But CUT IT WITH THE CUTSCENES! And make the game at least 5x longer! And make it have the creepyness of Fusion… :D All this would equal a winning game.

  32. HELL YEAH BITCHES! This is definitely great news. Other M has its ups and downs but lets be honest.. Other M does not feel like a Wii game more like a 360 game with sd resolution and with 2.5D fast action, epic cgi scenes and great story telling was a risky evolution for the Metroid series.

You “loyal fans” don’t get that Metroid is not doing well in Japan for years and thats a big problem for Nintendo so thats why their trying something new to appeal it to Japenese as well. Act like an adult and show some support ya nerds.

  33. “Guys, we just realized Samus was dressed too realistically in the last Metroid game. We need to work on it again and only give her two three-foot pieces of cloth.”

  34. I would love another Other M! At first i did’nt like that Samus could only use her power ups when ordered but that’s part of the plot and it’s purpose is to not spoil everything so early in the game so it’s not that bad. The story mode was solid 10 hours or more and the game reminded me of Super Metroid! The enemies and bosses were challenging and well designed and by that i mean ALLOT better than in the Prime series, too bad the music was not that memorable.

As for the Prime fans… Metroid Prime is pretty much over and it should stay that way! Please think, Metroid Prime Trilogy was 3 times the SAME GAME! Only MP3 had minimal innovation with motion controls and MP2 with shitty multiplayer.

Games like Metroid, F-Zero & Star Fox need to change cause those games are NOT selling well in their home countries and will slowly die in obscurity if Nintendo doesn’t do something about it.

    1. You’re exactly right on all accounts. The Metroid Prime story is over. Why are people obsessed with wanting Retro to make the same game over and over again?

      1. It’s because some loyal fans don’t want their favorite games to change and it’s understandable, i had the same problem with Resident Evil 5 at first but i admit that it is a good and fun game.

As for future Metroid games, improvement and innovation is a always a must but Other M’s gameplay, graphics and even story (for me anyway) were fantastic!

        1. i know that im gonna get yelled at for this, but i like other m! samus really didnt have much of a personality before other m, and they made her more of a human than a mindless angry bounty hunter. as for her breaking down with ridley, wouldnt you guys do the same? we are not all as awesome as we think we are! some of u probably do nothin but sit on ur butt and play vgs all day
anyway, i liked it, and i also liked prime 3, so i would be happy with either retro or tm workin on it. just my 2cents
