Team Ninja: Dead Or Alive Female Representation Is “Common Sense” & Not Going To Change

Japanese developer Team Ninja’s Yosuke Hayashi claims that female characters in the Dead or Alive series are made to look as “attractive as possible.” Hayashi says that people outside Japan may misinterpret the characters as being a humiliation to women but claims that’s not what the developer aims for. Apparently, Team Ninja’s designers create the female characters based on their common sense and creative sense.

“With the representation of female characters in the Dead or Alive franchise, we’ve always wanted to make the girls look as attractive as possible, and that’s something that’s not going to change for us at all. We are a Japanese developer, and we’re making the female characters with our common sense and our creative sense. When you take that to countries outside of Japan, it tends to be very misinterpreted in some cases, people considering it sexist or derogatory, etc.”

“For us, within our culture, we’re showing women like that, and we’re trying to make them look attractive. We can’t help if other cultures in other countries around the globe think that it’s a bad representation. Within our nationality and within our national borders, we obviously have morals that we create our female characters from, but within our Japanese sensibilities, we’ve made those characters the way they are and we’re not going to stop doing that.”

    1. If you think its sexist, dont buy it.Its Japanese and in that culture its normal to make women look as attractive as possible im a young woman and i like the DOA series

  1. Hahaha at the nerds who wank over dead or alive. You know you cracked one watching virtual boobs since your body odour and bad breathe from playing nintendo casual games all your life does not attract a single woman unless she’s obese and insecure and goes for anything that moves and has a one eyed snake

    1. Thetruthandnothingbut

You’re the most obvious and pathetic troll I’ve ever seen.
Try harder, cause I’m not moved by this and neither is anyone else with half a brain worth using.

        1. Thetruthandnothingbut

          Obvious still?
Is that the best you’ve got?
Bitch, please. You might as well turn in your troll license.

        2. Did you even read the article? if you know anything about Japanese culture, you would know that the sexulaisation of the young female body is common practice there. Look at almost any anime or manga not aimed at children and you would know what I mean. This has been going on in Japan for years, and not once has a prominent Japanese feminist group have complained about it. If you think it is degrading, I suggest you don’t buy the game.

Japan, and every single country in the world for that matter, has different cultures. Get used to it.

        3. Typical Aeolus morning.

“Ahh what a beautiful day to be a retard. Now lets check MyNintendoNews. Hmm blah blah, dead or alive, not degrading, well ive read enough, OH MY GOD DIS IZ SEXIST, silly Japs, respect women, because all of them complain about this, clearly, thats why i get nore pussy. No, pussy isnt a degrading word! Now to right click and look a thesaurus…ahh, masochist, sounds clever, better put it in trololol! Now to watch the lulz roll in with a use my cat to beat myself off.”

        4. Nintedward . Wiiu . 3ds . 1991 .

i support big 3d titties on my 3ds yes . its awesome . bro .
better than watching scopions dik on the ps vita .

    2. Th only bad odor and disgusting people is what you would consider our ” hardcore” gamer who sits up till 4 in the morning playing call of duty or some random PC mmo like diablo

    3. I’m no Dead or Alive fan whatsoever… But just wow, you are the worst Aeolus clone I’ve ever come across.

      1. Did too much fan boy activities make you lose your grammar abilities? Japan has that as an amusing joke and like TheDragon said, it’s not a real problem.

        1. im just curious that’s all, i don’t live in JP so how should i know; no need to take it offensive.

what does “fanboy” has to do with JP nosebleed?
          And “fanboy” of what?

          1. That’s what studying culture is for. By the way don’t act like you haven’t done anything fanboy related. If your attitude towards bashing anything that isn’t nintendo in the past being a fanboy, then I don’t know what is. I’m just saying, I don’t dislike Nintendo one bit. I just don’t worship my damn soul to them.

            1. hey man you don’t know nothing about me to begin with but let me tell you this i hated Nintendo back then, i use to be a big fan (fanboy to be exact) to Sega. After what happen to dreamcast i end up buying an Xbox and GameCube, when i played super Mario sunshine and smash bros, i now know why people like Nintendo for. It change my opinion of how i see the company.

and by the way the people i hate in this site are people who come here if they hate Nintendo so much, why are they here to begin with?

” If your attitude towards bashing anything that isn’t nintendo in the past being a fanboy, then I don’t know what is.” whoa whoa whoa man i don’t go to other sites and say bad stuff to other companies, i don’t go to apple and say shit just because i hate there products, i fact why should i spend my time going to a site that i hate just to talk crap?

            2. *Dials Phone*
Unknown Speaker: “Hey Reggie, its me, El Diablo…You missed picking up the soul of Nevermore…I thought we had an agreement, you get the souls, and I grant you ‘readiness’ for the rest of your days?”
Reggie: “U got it El Diablo…Ninja-moto is just waiting for the right time to snag mii that soul…just grant me readiness a little longer?”
El Diablo: “Since you and your WiiPad are so sexy success is pretty much guaranteed, so just this once I will let it slide.”

  2. I honestly don’t care about anybody is going to say about this, but I actually believe Team Ninja when they say that. The devs treat Dead or Alive like it’s their baby. Hell, when someone created a nude patch for one of their games, the person created got sued for it.

But yeah, like Team Ninja says, it’s just culture differences. I’ve seen enough animu to know that it’s not a misinterpretation to the matter. It’s just that the west (specifically America) is really sensitive to sexuality. Showing tits to a 10 year old boy in a video game is wrong, and yet killing people in a video game is A-Okay.

    1. I watch anime. Its sexy and raunchy but thats just how they are. Theres even an anime where they get “powers” from sucking boobs. Its just the culture.

      1. Yeah, Seikon no Qwaser. I’ve seen it before. It’s just one of those “if I wanted porn, I’d watch porn” types… That’s the only thing that put me off on it.

        1. Yeah that xD its actually a good show….but then random boob sucking * shrug*

Mirai Nikki is the best anime ive seen in recent years, probably one of the best ive seen ever

          1. I understand that Yuno popularized the yandere stature, but to go as far as to call it “one of the best ive seen ever” almost tells me you haven’t seen a lot…

    2. i don’t know man, people (expensively the parent of these kids) are stupid, they let them buy a Grand theft auto and next thing you know, there kid does bad stuff.

Why do you think Nintendo put Parental Control for.

      1. No wonder Aeulos or whatever the hell people call him try to piss you off. “Why do you think Nintendo put Parental Control for.” How the hell is that relevant to what you said the 1st time? Besides the DS, there has not been a single GTA game on a Nintendo platform. There are a bunch of games where you kill people that aren’t necessarily rated M by the way.

        1. im taking about the games that cause trouble, there people out there that don’t now what there buying for there kids.

  3. Makes sense. It’s just a culture thing. It’s only natural for this to happen.

On that note, I wonder if that was what Yoshio Sakamoto was thinking when he came up with Samus in Other M.

    1. Tbh, Samus is better being the way she was originally intended, sexy but not a busty “help me Adam” woman.

      1. This is a different topic but ign have said that the ps4 is rumoured to have 4k resolution support. They also said that a sony 4k resolution tv will cost you $30,000. Thats when i started laughing.

        1. Thats been floating around for a while. I probably wont even get a ps4 if they piss about with useless crap.
Im still annoyed that i held out on a 3DS till earlier this week, its awesome

  4. It is a good fighting game. I like it, i play it. Do idiots really complain about attractive characters? Do you want to control grotesque characters?

  5. I fully understand where he’s coming from, it’s simply a cultural difference that most people over here can’t understand, watching anime and playing anime style JRPGs for as long as I have give s me a better idea of where he’s coming from, it’s simply the culture

  6. Makes sense to me. It’s his culture and his game. Outsiders try to ascribe differnt meanins to his work that were never his attention. I love Japanese culture, even if it has it’s weird moments. After all, every culture has its’ weird customs. Leave luck to heaven.

  7. I don’t know why people are complaining about it. I mean what guy wouldn’t want to see hot attractive females. I know I wouldn’t want to see some ugly stretched marked obese chick on there.

    1. Must be a lot of non-hetrosexual or insecure females out there, worried about attractive polygon characters in a video-game.

Gaming was a lot better when the “general audience” wasn’t involved. Now everyone wants to make things for children or their own insecurities.

  8. Bing Bang Bop!!! Just like the Blacks in America, women freak out over the little things and call anything “remotely” bad about women sexist/racist. People need to chill down. The world has changed, there is a small percentage of people in the world who are ACTUALLY racist or sexist. Also, everyone has diferent cultures. You should respect that because technically by disrespecting their culture you are being racist lol! Bop bam Boom!!!

    1. Sadly enough, there’s actually a very large percentage of people in the world who are racist and sexist… As in, probably most of the entire world.

  9. I love that he said this, all of these moralfags crying sexism and racism every five minutes need to get over themselves and move on with their lives, DOA is awesome, get over assholes…

  10. Shocking as it may be. The people of japan arn’t as sensitive as other countries. Besides, if its ok to let people like Nikki Manaj be a “positive female role model” I think its ok for DOA to exist. At least the women in this game are some of the most badass characters.

  11. So, their basic logic is: “Our country’s culture is inherently sexist and objectifies women on a regular basis, so we don’t need to change our game’s representation of women. We’ll just continue objectifying and over-sexualizing the female gender because that’s fine in Japan.”
I think this is an arrogant and narrow-minded response. As much as pubescent/prepubescent boys like girls with huge breasts and skimpy clothing, most women don’t appreciate being represented as sexual objects.
Most men also wouldn’t appreciate having every male character represented as a muscular macho-man wearing nothing but boxer shorts, just to cater to the fantasies and whims of a few heterosexual women.
The fighting genre lacks diversity, especially when it comes to the representation of female fighters. As more and more girls discover and welcome gaming into their lives, this kind of attitude will only keep them away from games like DoA and, eventually, mean the end of many franchises.
If there are people asking for some stuff to change, why can’t developers try to listen and to come up with ideas to actually allow gaming to be an all-inclusive medium?

    1. Wow what a hypocrite. Have u taken a look at the media over here or watch MTV lately? How about going to Kahoots or Las Vegas? America is filled with sexual innuendo in itself. Just because Nicki or Brittany Spears dress the way they don’t doesn’t mean people will stop buying their CD’s.

But to act all puritan and houlier-than-thou is laughable. The average female wears a shirt that shows the top of her breast or belly button in public. Here we have the female form created in a 3D program set inside a game.

And since the game is FANTASY to began with, there shouldn’t be a problem. No real female is ever harmed or subjected to sexual harassment from the making of this game. No REAL female exist in the game. It’s a video-game that’s so obliviously fake it’s hilarious. Your the type of prude that’s really squawking about polygons in a 3D fictional game and probably someone who’s afraid of games being sexy to began with anyway.

      1. You should really brush up on your English if you can’t even use the word “hypocrite” in the right context. It completely undermines everything you said after that, because I was just thinking to myself “I’m actually reading a comment by a guy who doesn’t even know what ‘hypocrite’ means.”

With that said, everything you wrote represents YOUR opinion. YOU think that we shouldn’t question female representation in games because they’re “just polygons”. YOU think that, because girls dress scantily, it’s ok to represent EVERY female character in a game like that. YOU fail to see how diversity should be represented in games. And YOU think that women are ok with the representation of their gender in certain videogames.

The problem right here is that the industry’s “leaders” are people just like you. They’re men who think they know EXACTLY how a woman should be represented. They even have the arrogance – like yourself – to say that women don’t feel offended and that it’s perfectly acceptable to reduce a whole gender full of diversity to a couple of chicks wearing nothing but short shorts and small tops.
Even as a guy, I can’t understand how other men can be so fucking arrogant to the point of claiming full creative control over the female body’s representation. It’s mind boggling.

  12. It all comes down to your culture. Wether is ok to have semi naked gorgeous 3D women a bad thing or totally covered up women in burkas. The ones that makes the last choice is you. So to me is ok if their 3D boobs giggle..why because thats part of reality see if any girls boob don’t giggle if they practice any sport and then comeback here and tell me otherwise . In conclusion to me is not an issue at all since those are 3D models not real women.

  13. Good to see a developer stand up for themselves instead of butt-kissing hypocrites over here.

I’m tired of all the a-hole puritan prudes and extreme feminist types over here ruining the games. We can have 50 shades of grey but the moment a video-game comes along it’s “sexiest” or “bad!”

Why don’t they just burn all the romance and M-rated movies and novels like they did before in 1954. People are so ridiculous video-games are protected under FREEDOM OF SPEECH. Video-games are NOT real life, these characters don’t even exist in the real world!

Stop dragging real life into gaming. If a creator wants their game to be sexy then they should allow it to be. The rating is there, the themes are there. If you don’t like it PLAY ANOTHER GAME.

It’s that simple. But everyone wants to be busy-bodies and start putting limits on everyone else. I’m a chick and I don’t care what other females think of the game, but the old and done FPS Blood and Guts gets old and tiresome.
