Ex Nintendo Employee Claims Nintendo Japan Doesn’t Trust Nintendo America

Decisions regarding the world’s largest gaming company, Nintendo, are made in Japan and Nintendo of America employees must adhere to all the decisions made, according to a nameless current Nintendo employee.

According to an anonymous former Nintendo employee, however, Nintendo of Japan (Nintendo Co., Ltd.) wants to be cooperative but is hesitant because it has difficulty trusting Nintendo of America to be proactive.

Current Nintendo Employee: Cons – Extremely hierarchical. Decisions are made in Japan and NOA employees are expected to execute. Initiative is not encouraged.

Former Nintendo Employee: Cons – Parent headquarters [Nintendo Co., Ltd.] micro-manages most marketing tactics. Spend most of your time explaining and justifying actions, instead of being innovative and agressive [sic] in the competitive video game industry. No work/life balance. Headquarters want to be cooperative but has difficulty trusting and allowing US subsidiary to be proactive.

Advice to Senior Management – Let the US subsidiary do their work and market in the style appropriate to our consumers. Move beyond finger pointing and finding scapegoats to making the best video games possible.

    1. The word football is taboo to me. I’m sick of that word! Everytime I turn on the news I hear football! I hate living in America right now -_-.

      1. What would you rather hear about? How incredibly terrible the economy is, and how debt has increased almost 10 trillion in 11 years, 5 of that coming from the last 3 years? I’ll take football all day long. Go Pack GO!

          1. We got the XL LAST. The only “first” one we had recently was Wii. We typically get most games last. There’s only a few we got first like Mario Tennis Open (I think)

          1. No he means that everyone should have a different name on the site so that no one will tarnish each other’s name.

  1. I wonder if this has anything to do with games only being released in Japan but not America (EX: Fatal Frame 4 Will)

    1. Wii’s marketing has all but stopped in America and has been stopped since the 2011 redesign. Before that, the last we saw of the Wii was when its “Wii Would Like to Play” adverts expired. Wii sales have tapered off drastically because of this, and I’m sure NOJ has something to do with it. Reggie is a smart guy, but if Iwata and crew demand he keep marketing budgets down, what’s he going to do? He’s going to keep his job and listen to them.

You’ll also recall that the last fiscal year was Nintendo’s first-ever losing year as a company. They had a streak of growth for over 100 years and it ended because they didn’t shove out software and they didn’t promote their systems well.

3% of Wii’s sold have been from this year, which is absolutely abysmal given that XBox360 is already up to 6.2% and PS3 at 8.4%. Wii U’s imminent arrival, while it obviously plays into poor sales, is largely irrelevant when you look at the year-to-year data.

Nintendo has been slipping because they don’t know how to manage their larger foreign audience. NOJ is hardly being “fair” to NOA or NOE.

        1. No shit? Any other console developer has the trust of third party developers to fall back on, but Nintendo doesn’t even trust its American or European counterparts enough to let them develop games or market to their needs.

      1. Pretty sure it’s the other way around. One yen is worth 1/80 the value of the american dollar. Plus, both currencies are weak right now.

  2. This isn’t surprising at all. Strange marketing decisions, relatively few events and promotions outside of Japan and seeming disconnect with the western world all pointed to this already. Execs at Retro, etc., also have mentioned issues with communication and decision-making.

If NOA didn’t have Reggie as its charismatic leader, they’d be all but irrelevant to the general gaming community. It’s really annoying to be denied special 3DS packages, gaming events, et al because NOJ won’t trust NOA or NOE with bigger decisions.

  3. Makes sense, America domt always get it right (no offence).
I think they should have a little more comtrol though when it comes to bringing other games to regions, and even trust 3rd party developers to work on franchises, theres alot of western developers that think like Japanese and Western developers

      1. Did you? NOA makes no decisions. They could have a really good idea, or know a developer who can make a game for them, but NOJ doesnt trust them. Nintendo MADE Retro Studios, and is the only reason that conpany makes games for them. Any other partner ships have been japanese developers, they keep things a little too close to their chest. But if NOA made or suggested some ideas to have good western developers make games, it would decrease the work load.
Everything is to do with marketing, and i have no opinion on that.

  4. Seems like a very understandable straightforward decision by Nintendo of Japan. I doubt gamers want their favourite Nintendo franchises corrupted with some kind of American BS, Nintendo is a Japanese company and should remain so, too much influence from the NA wing will certainly jeopardize that.

    1. Oh fuck you, NOA wouldn’t make Mario into an FPS or anything. Get your head out of your ass. This has to do with a lot more than just pumping out Mario games. It has to do with marketing, localizing and employee satisfaction — all areas NOA and NOE should have near-100% control of.

      1. No one’s talking about letting NOA develop games. This is about marketing and promotions, not games. NOA would never have the option of putting a gun in Mario’s hands, NOA don’t develop games.

    1. How does if feel to not get any good games on your xbox 720 because of production costs. Pity they have no innovation and just focus on specs.

                  1. Girlfriend? you mean *Boyfriend? Lol and fuck off ..if you choose me on brawl i will jump out of the screen and shit on you and ur boyfriend.

                    1. Boyfriend? Nah sorry, I don’t swing that way. You’re going to shit on me? I think I might need to teach you about hygiene Nessy.

        1. Tell me a nintendo system that doesn’t have innovation besides the gamecube. And ds ds lite etc.counts as the same.

    1. Specs, specs, specs, blah, blah, blah. I will lol when sony and microsoft leave the console race because of developers constantly losing money.

          1. The most whiny little bitch on this site. Who will never step outside of his basement and man the fuck up because he’s too busy getting butt devastated on the internet to handle anything else.

              1. Is the person I’m replying to, and the other that I am -now- replying to as well.

What’s funny is the second poster is nothing but a mindless sheep trying to be witty all of the time.

        1. Awww, Ness! You’re such a master with insults! I don’t think I’ll ever recover from that. You want that bottle yet?

        1. ziegfried von schroder

DATZ RIGHT!Vell at least i will learn how to hack to other networks so i can destroy dicktendo soon enough

          1. I think he’s achieved a bit more in life than you Nessy. I mean with the money he would be making, why would you complain? :)

        2. You haven’t read the articles stating that they will slowly begin giving the reigns to new developers? Shit Nessy, you’re living in the past.

  5. Good! Nintendo America Team is terrible, the Japan team makes much better, more polished games with better gameplay. Nintendo of America should not be put in charge of anything except marketing and hype.

      1. The person above me is a fat cunt

Oh yes , Nintendo Australia is terrible , we get games late , poor service by phoning them and we dont get good events like they do in US or Europe , we just get the Nintendo Connection Tour once a year.

          1. The person above me is a fat cunt

Yes , We have Jack Shit !! and its annoying that americans complain they have crap on their club nintendo but atleast their one is better than ours , We pretty much only have pencil cases and posters and shit , they have game and watch,Trophies and platinum rewards ..

      2. Well at least we did get monster hunter, Xenoblades, pandoras tower, last story etc without having to partition for it

  6. I don’t fully trust Americans and I never had my country nuked by them lol, lets just act like grown up here. to me it just sounds like a bit company back biting and just needs to taken for what it is. it is up to Nintendo how they rum their operations and it seems to be working

  7. Even the lowest levels of Nintendo show this. Club Nintendo of Japan = awesome. Club Nintendo of America = Mario cloths? Folders for back to school? Wal-Mart sells Mario folders for 2 dollars.

  8. Anyone here remember Operation Rainfall, to bring the three most wanted RPG games for the Wii to America, and how NoA was reluctant in NOT bringing it until much later? Or what about the region lock? In Brazil, games cost at least 3 times what they’re supposed to be, and we use the American consoles. If I or a relative of mine go to Europe or Japan for business or whatever reason there may be, I’d ask him/her to buy me some games in their trip, because I could buy 3 or 4 games by the price of one here. But thanks to the region lock, I can only buy American games! And the chances of a business trip or vacation to Europe are bigger because Europe is the HQ for many multinationals, and the first choice for a touristic trip! In other words, if I can’t buy games in Europe, I’m not gonna buy games anywhere because it’s too expensive here (half the minimum salary for one game, two or three for the console), so, I’ll resort in piracy, which is like an epidemic disease in Brazil. If NoA at least tried to translate games to Portuguese, and hired Brazilian people to translate them, not only the menus on the 3DS, maybe the extremely abusive taxes over games would lower a bit since it would be creating a few more jobs here (what we need), and eventually, make an HQ for the Latin America (our market here is extremely different from the market in North America, we really need something unique for the South America)! But the only thing I see NoA doing is censoring everything that comes out from America! Good job Reggienator, go kick your own butt!

  9. Good management skills require being open to new ideas from others. If NoJ wants to expand the correct way, it should let it’s American counterpart give feedback as to what works in the west. Japan HQ should seriously consider the approaches that America thinks would work best. Ignoring them is just bad business.

  11. I’m honestly not surprised at this. Look at how Nintendo America handled Xenoblade and The Last Story. Great games, but people practically had to beg for them to come to America. NOA couldn’t even be bothered to publish Last Story (they let XSEED games do it). NOA has become increasingly stingy towards RPG’s.

  12. This is very typical of Japanese business culture. This is not unique to Nintendo. If you are an American executive, you also have a Japanese counterpart who holds the veto power over all your decisions.

  13. Bing Bang Bop!!! Cant blame Nintendo, Americans are obsessed with lame FPS’ and online multiplayer involving (you guessed it…) shooting guns. Bop Bam Boom!!!

  14. Its funny how everyone here, thinks Japan (NINTENDO) think they are making Nintendo corny, its actually Nintendo America. Nintendo in Japan, has alot of Violent Games. Thats why I have a Wii From Japan, and All the games

  15. Back in the NES & SNES days, Nintendo Japan never censored anything. However, Nintendo America was WAY too scrict about their rules and games published o their system. With ESRB created, NOA now allows blood and gore, except for the religious content. Does anyone think that Nintendo hates religion?

  16. Nintendo America and Nintendo Japan have diffrent veiws BUT I THINK THAT BOTH SIDES DO A GREAT JOB AND I THINK THAT ANY ISSUES CAN BE WORKED OUT AS A WHOLE.
