UK Video Game Retailers Discuss Phenomenal Wii U Pre-Orders

A number of high-profile retail outlets in the United Kingdom have reported phenomenal pre-order sales for Wii U. Retailers such as GAME and ShopTo saw a surge of pre-orders on Thursday 13th September when the pre-orders went live. The Premium 32GB console will Nintendo Land seems to have been the most popular bundle. Here’s their reactions:

“The reaction has been phenomenal with 500 pre-orders in the first hour after the Wii U announcement on Thursday, and the following 48 hours saw similar levels of pre-orders as gamers rushed to secure their hardware for Christmas.”

– ShopTo CEO Igor Cipolletta

“As expected with such a highly anticipated announcement of Wii U, we’ve had lots and lots of interest since Thursday. Pre-orders are exceeding expectations with the black console proving the most popular so far. So far the black premium Nintendo Land bundle is proving most popular, with the basic white version and the black Zombi U not far behind, enjoying similar demand to each other.”

– GAME

Gamers who didn’t get their preorders in when stores started accepting them last Thursday might want to avoid GameStop (GME) , Best Buy (BBY), Sears (SHLD), Toys R Us and Walmart (WMT) as supplies have been depleted. There is still the off chance that those retailers might get more stock (some of the stores listed still have Basic Sets available), but early indications suggest there could be a Wii U shortage come November 18th.

    1. Thank you MNN !!!!! I was interested to see how this Beast is peforming in pre orders . My local Games Dojo has exhausted its limit already . No Wiiu’s left to pre order , basic and deluxe gone .

God save our gracious N , Long live our Noble N , God saave Miyamoto!!!!!!!

  1. 500 in the first hour? And only in one store! I saw someone say that Nintendo could sell 14 millions of Wii U in 14 months, but if things keep like this, and they have consoles to sell, in 14 months the Wii U will surpass the DS!

  2. I think a large part of this may be the fact that the Wii U is finally getting third-party games, even if some of them are ports with upgraded features.
The very fact that the Wii U CAN get them, seems to be spurring on hope that the game train won’t pass Nintendo’s station by during its travels, as far as future games go.

I’m greatly looking forward to Bayonetta 2, and I can’t wait to see how much better the Wii U will do this gen compared to the last.

  3. The Wii U will fail they said….It won’t be successful they said. (In other news, I gotta get my premium console pre-ordered! Anyone know any retailers who still have the premium Wii U pre order available?)

  5. Wow! And here I am thinking that Nintendo was just purposely shipping a small amount of Wii U sets in comparison to the Wii. Glad these were made to prove me wrong! :D

Keep up the good job, Nintendo! :3

If all goes well with the supply of Wii Us at launch (as that seems more of a concern than consumer interest at this point), then Nintendo could very well exceed its expectations before the end of this fiscal year (when launch window ends on the last week of March 2013).

  6. I hope they start with the mass advertising soon, a big hype around the launch is really important with so many other options these days
