Shigeru Miyamoto Stepping Down As Nintendo EAD General Manager This December?

According to a Neogaf user by the name of Shikamaru Ninja, legendary designer Shigeru Miyamoto is expected to leave Nintendo’s EAD division by December. Apparently, it troubles Miyamoto that his position as EAD General Manager overshadows the content created by new producers and directors at Nintendo’s largest gaming division. New Super Mario Bros. series producer Takashi Tezuka is rumored to take Miyamoto’s place at EAD.

Here’s a list of supposed changes at Nintendo, which the user claims are gathered from Guardian UK, Nikkei and Wired:

  • Major shift in Kyoto development sources involving three Research & Development buildings
  • Shigeru Miyamoto stepping down as EAD General Manager
  • Takashi Tezuka becoming new EAD General Manager
  • New Groups / New Producers announced for EAD Kyoto / SPD Kyoto
  • EAD Tokyo Expansion / Masahiro Sakurai possibly Joining EAD Tokyo
  • New Division lead by Miyamoto with younger staff focused on smaller scale games
  • Miyamoto’s Departure Inspiring New IPs for the EAD Kyoto Division

    1. Of course he will!
I’m excited for those new IPs as well.
Hell, maybe something as legendary as Zelda will be created.

      1. Before he leaves, it would be nice if he makes at least one more major Mario and Zelda title for the Wii U to be his finale at Nintendo.

        1. He´s just stepping out of his position as general manager. That won´t prevent him to keep working on new projects.

    2. Meh the man latley has been maming trash like wii music, vitality sensor, ipad etc. Look at sony theyre planning on making a controller that has cold and heat sensing on top of the motion sensing. And xbox is planning on implmenting tablets with the kinect 2. But theyre experimenting with google glass

    1. yeah,, that explains alot why he is stepping down if its true. …. he’s going to teach the next generation how to produce a f*cking amazing games… oh well… He is working on a new Nintendo IP so no worries ….

    1. I don’t know, underneath his name is Nintendo’s Ninja in Japanese. But then if he was a ninja, wouldn’t he not tell people that?

    1. The fuck is wrong with you ??? This is BY FAR the best developer in Video game history you don’t just say Finally . He didn’t make the games you don’t like . HE makes the 3D mario games , Zelda , Pikmin etc .

Like saying ”Finaly” when Kojima quits gaming . That just means you’re piece of shit and not a gamer at all.

      1. He is not a developer. He is a DESIGNER. He designs games. He daid he can’t code very well.

Goesto show you know fuck all about the role of a dev

        1. Does the terminology really matter that much to you? He is still by far the greatest contributor to the video game industry and without him your Call of Duties wouldn’t even exist. The man saved gaming (after the games market almost collapsed in the 80’s) with the debut of the NES and Mario and Zelda franchises. You don’t just say good riddance, even if you don’t care about Nintendo.

        2. What ever . pretty much the same thing you dick . I KNOW
DEV teams are all split up into different roles lol . But they’re all still des really . What ever if you wanna be so anal about it haha.

Casual mum , shouldn’t you bee reading wonder books on your ps3?

      2. Now now. Everyones time has to come to an end. We already knew he would be stepping down sooner or later. It gives the chance for the newer developers/Designers (who are very accustomed to how the contemporary gamers works) to give us new and better experiences, heck we could be seeing new an abundant of new IP’s when MIyamotos successor comes in.

    2. Yeah, thus comment was nothing but butthurt.

The guy that made Mario and Zelda, and you say “Finally”.
Yeah. How are those’s one shot IP’s that are always good the first time? What about Crash, Spyro, Metal Gear, Final Fantasy, Tomb Raider, ohhhhhhhh…awkwaaaaaard.

    3. @Aeolus Sigh…just comes to show what a sad, sad person you are. You can’t argue with the fact that this man achieved great contributions to the gaming world and probably is the inspiration of many young designers.
But that doesn’t matter to you, you hate Nintendo and everything to do with them right? I just think that’s really sad.

      1. you have great point nintendo has great games great inovation like mario luigi mansion zelda the game pad tablet bfor wii u

      1. No, he’s an asshole and a troll, but wishing for someone to die is always wrong, no matter how shitty and dumb their opinions are.

          1. If someone was stupid enough to “Find me IRL” and try to do that, they would be outright killed in the process, while I get away with it since they clearly had the intention to fuck with me and I have every right to put them down in the process.

I hope you’re the one who would try such though, so I can tie you up to a back of a vehicle and drive away as your face drags along a surface hopefully littered with whatever the hell on the ground.

                1. A character from Punch Out!, a classic game. Besides, why SHOULDN’T I be allowed to post? At least I’m a Nintendo fan.

                    1. 1.You always go off topic meg…
2.It is you who is saying shiny, animated etc. and brought it up.
                      3.Shut up meg.

      2. Considering how sad his life must be, deep down even he probably looks forward to that day…
Personally, I don’t give a damn. If anything, his evident butthurt is quite entertaining to see

  1. What ??? This isn’t true at all . I heard he is stepping down as general manager but obviously carrying on his games development at Nintendo .

The day Miyamoto leaves or quits Nintendo entirely is The day a Large chunk of Nintendo dies.

I don’t care about Takashi Tezuka , All he has done is make 4 identical NSMB games . He’s a fucking nobody compared to Miyamoto . NSMB don’t even compare to Miyamoto’s SNES games ……..

Grain of salt , though I doubt this is true . Miyamoto Lives and breathers Nintendo.

      1. Exactly! He is the best developer of all time. The day he retires or quits is a very sad day for me . Fortunately he is just stepping down as manager of ead . But still developing games.

    1. As much as I admire him too, He has to retire sooner or later, I mean he may want to start relaxing with his family and focus on retirement.

      1. ^This
He may be legendary, but he can’t give every breath of life to Nintendo. He needs to enjoy his life and family.

I know it’s sad for gamers , but he deserves a solid retirement while he’s still “young.”

            1. I know but I just want the future generation to not view his franchises differently if his successor does it terribly.

      2. He said awhile ago he is to young to even think about retiring that he was having to much fun. Miyamoto wont red
tire till he is like 75 lol.

    2. I just hope he finds someone as good or maybe better or almost as good as him before he retires or else it’ll be like SEGA n Capcom.

    3. Takashi Tezuka has done far more than you give him credit for; he has been intimately involved in many Miyamoto projects, and if Miyamato thinks he is a worthy successor, who are we to say otherwise?

    4. Nintendo will live on. Stop worshipping. Your glory of Nintendo ruins appreciation for all different types of gaming.

    5. Yeah…I’m really hoping that this isn’t true because if that guy replaces Miyamoto, creativity in Mario games will officially be a thing of the past.

      1. this rumour was posted by an anonymous user or something . I am guessing it was jut a lie. anyway I ink he will obvious carry on doing his thing exactly the same , but just not as boss of EAD .

  2. I hope not. Shigeru is the father of modern gaming. It would sad to see him leave the one position that he’s loved. Plus his games are second to none. All those saying good riddance. Get lost. I’d like to see you make a better game.

      1. And where did I say he managed games to in my comment? I know what Miyamoto-san does. He makes games because its what he loves doing. You really need to read comment BEFORE posting. Now who’s the idiot?

        1. You are one selfish loser if you think making games for people like you is his only life. He has a life outside of this! Honestly I respect him and his accomplishments, but it’s time for new blood! Can’t keep riding one man forever.

  3. It is sad, but the moment had to come sooner or later :/, why are people so mean about this and casual mum saying good riddance this totally heartless. I hope Takashi Tezuka lives up to the name of Shigeru Miyamoto as Nintendo EAD, but at least Miyamoto does realize that Mario has to take a break, and who knows maybe the small company with the new IP’s will be new success!

    1. Not heartless. Stop constantly reliying on miyamoto. There are BETTER people at nintendo now. Like sakurai for example who make actual good games and not wii music…

Miyamoto was great but not anymore. Sad to say it but u got to look at it realistically. Nintendo fanboys need to move on and face the fact nintendo need to make new BIG ips. Not mii based games but actual new ips or just remakes of old titles…majoras mask 3d is an examplem

The step down of miyamoto enables more creativity and innovation. One of miyamotos weaknesses was telling ppl what to do.

Miyamoto is a legend don’t get me wrong but he is getting older and losing that magic spark. Plenty of other extremely talented ppl there like the galaxy director and tezuka etc. Pity fanboys live in the past and don’t want nintendo to go down new ideas and paths

      1. Quit, using Wii Music as an example it failed horribly, but they ( Miyamoto and the staff ) made amazing titles for Wii like Skyward Sword. ( which by the way that’s the first Zelda game I actually beat XD ) I totally agree that if Miyamoto steps down new IP’s will be released, but please don’t say good riddance, that’s just not right and it shows absolutely no respect for the hard years work he has done for Nintendo and the gaming community.

The spark that you think is gone, it’s still there, we just grew up. Oh and by the way did you Pre-Order Pokemon Black and White 2? If so did it come with a figurine? If so which one?

      2. You keep bringing up Wii Music. Is that the only game he’s ever made? You either need to grow a brain or at least get some more creative put downs.

      3. I’d actually have to agree with this. He was a Legend, and was huge in gaming, but as time goes on, he just seems to have lost his spark (still have massive amounts of respect for the man) but Nintendo need to get the new designers in sooner or later, especially with a new console coming in.

      4. I have to partly agree with you. His magic is not gone, but it is still good as new people and idéas needs to be seen. He is a great video game designer but it is still good with new minds behind our games. Without change there’s no revolution ;3

    2. Mario won’t take a break whether you want or not because it’s succesful what sort of company just stops selling their most succesful product

    1. And zigfried you should leave. How dare you insult Miyamoto’s name here. He’s a legend that will carry on!!

  4. As big as this is, EAD and everyone that works for Nintendo, they know the games. Theyre the ones that scuplted and forms the world, composed the music, made the game fun, Miyamoto is the brain child.

New blood is what we need though.

  5. What exactly is Nintendo EAD?? I did some research but I am still confused. What does it stand for. Is it a second party developer or are they Nintendo themselves?

    1. I think its basically Nintendo’s main development team, so they make the big Mario, Zelda, Pikmin, Star Fox (if it was coming out) games, that are under the supervision of Miyamoto.

      1. Their Nintendo’s main development team. Ok. So if Nintendo EAD make Mario, Zelda and etc so what does Nintendo make?

        1. Thats kind of a broad question…basically, EAD is one development team. Like a subsidiary. Retro is the same.
It’s all part of Nintendo, all the various development teams, amd what not. There’s no team called Nintendo, that makes the games, you just have developers associated with the name, and under the companies hire. Obviously this stuff didnt happen straight away, and in the early days, ot probably was jus referred to as Nintendo making the games, but now their multiple teams.

            1. Nintendo EAD IS NIntendo, basically. There are other divisions, but EAD is like the core division that spawns the core titles of Nintendo.

  6. It will happen eventually that Miyamoto will have to step down. I’m already prepared and I’m not worried in the least. Miyamoto will not step down until he’s sure that he leaves IPs in capable hands. Aunouma already handles the Zelda franchise under Miyamoto’s supervision so that’s covered.

Miyamoto is the greatest game designer of all time. There’s no one who can truly replace him. But the future of his franchises are secure. Leave luck to heaven.

  7. IF this is true then there are two ways to look at it:
The loss of a visionary and somebody who knows what works in games
Or the chance for new designers with fresh perspectives to work on some of Nintendo’s biggest IPs making them evolve and develop and the chance of new IPs from another visionary all the while being helped and grown into expert designers adding their fresh perspective on life by the man who shaped their childhoods and got them interested in games: Shigeru Miyamoto . Always look on the bright side of life the loss of miyamoto (witch it isn’t he isn’t going just training new designers) will certainly mean a change of focus in Nintendo but Nintendo is a big boy now it dosent live or die on a single man’s whim the eventual loss will be a loss but Nintendo has been planing and the fresh blood may just be what is needed to get a new generation as excited for Nintendo as we where in the 80s look at how many companies survived the loss of their “Visonary” Steve Jobs and Apple Bill Gates and Microsoft (i think he quit) Sony’s main person The original designer of the game boy (cannot spell his name) and Nintendo

Nintendo has the upper hand Miyamoto is preparing another generation somthing others could never do.
Don’t look at it as a loss see it as an opportunity

  8. Eh, Had to happen sooner or later. He does have to live his life and enjoy his retirement years. You were a legend Miyamoto and I wish you luck in your future years! :D

    1. You said this several times, however I totally agree with you, and people should be noticing this comment.

Many here are young, and probably don’t know how important this is. I worked my ass off for my company, even slept there a few times… But at the end of the day, it’s a job, and family comes first.

Well said, and best to him wherever he may go!

  9. It’s great that even after stepping down, he’s still in Nintendo, helping with new IP’s by guiding new talent that is coming into the field.
His time isn’t over; it’s just entering a new stage.
World 7 complete, so to speak, and on to world 8.

  10. Ok,for those that need a better understand these are all the subdivisions of Nintendo and examples of what they have done. These are first party studious AKA Nintendo.

Nintendo EAD Comprehensive Group –Super Mario 64 DS

HAL Laboratory –Kirby series, Earthbound series, Super Smash Bros. series

As for Miyamoto stepping down, if its true, it truley is a sad day but it has to happen eventually. He has groomed his predecessors well with the Zelda and Mario teams so they will be in good hands. And for those that still worry, don’t.He is not retiring or leaving Nintendo, he is just going to focus on new smaller games/new IP’s with the new younger guys in the company. He is actually trying to help mold the new guys while starting smaller projects and new IP’s. What better way for your legacy to continue then to help educate the younger newcomers in the company. His will give him more room to create again instead of watching over everyone else’s work all the time.

    1. I don’t normally read long posts like that, but good info and thoughts! Thanks for sharing. I do agree with your last statement as well.

      1. He should though. He should go spend time with his family. We need new blood anyway, Miyamoto was good, but his spark just isn’t connecting with a lot of gamers these days. I still love a few of his games, but not alot compared to years ago. New blood = New perspective on game designing/developing.

  11. Fucking shut up casual mum you little whore, you’re nothing but a talking vagina, I suggest a new hobby such as whoredom, lol.

    1. Casual Mum actually does express a good point if you read it properly, the language was a bit harsh but he/she made a good point.

        1. So? He/She points made sense. Just because they hate Nintendo doesn’t mean they can’t express perfectly logical points.

  12. this is exciting and sad at the same time. that is if its true.
i still hope he stays with the company for many many years yet though even after stepping down

  15. You’ve got to be fucking kidding me. The guy who made the shitfest of the New Super Mario Bros. games is replacing the guy who made the masterpieces Super Mario Bros. 1, 2 & 3, Super Mario World, Super Mario 64, and the Galaxy games as general manager of EAD? Surely there’s someone more qualified.

    1. if miyamoto sees him as worthy of that title i see no reason to disagree. tezuka has done more than just the new super mario bros. series he has always worked closely along side miyamoto as a programmer, designer, writer, producer and director since super mario bros. 1, legend of zelda, pikmin, and so on. he was also the main director for super mario world and director along side others for super mario world 2: yoshi’s island. he has a good record we’re just waiting to see what the next big thing he can do.

  16. Wow he made wii music and we didn’t like it but that doesn’t mean he hasn’t made classic characters and games to open many doors at Nintendo. Good things come to an end eventually and either way Nintendo put out very good games on the wii like galaxy 2 dkcr Kirby’s return to dream land skyward sword and so much more

  17. nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
my life is ruin MY money is gone!

  18. One thing I kind of hope for. is for a new and fresh take on the Mario main series. I love the spin-offs and RPGs but the platformers, while solid games, are not as fresh as they used to be. with a successor, we may see a new turn for the platformers. one where peach is not delegated to mcguffin and bowser is left as big bad.

The RPGs have great characters and villains. the platformers need that same approach. they need to be expanded. Just imagine, a main series Mario game where you can freely play as mario, Luigi, peach and perhaps a special mode where you play as Bowser as you storm the fortress of Wart, midbus or even Cackletta. This is the kind of thing that I look forward too whenever a mario game is released. and now perhaps it will happen.

Also, he isn;t leaving as has been mentioned. he is just handing the reigns over to a new driver and by the sounds of it, he is creating opportunity for new, younger developers to get a foot into nintendo and mentor them.

    1. Hm. I like that Idea. Ninten should have an official forum or a way of contacting the designers and developers to share ideas and thoughts with the fans themselves.

  19. Every awesome game he’s made has an unfortunate tendency to be “in the past.”

These days, he hasn’t come out with anything new or different.

There’s no need to bemoan his departure just because of the games he made back then. Cuz that was BACK THEN. Those games he had a hand in back then only has relevance today as just memories. Memories that Nintendo seem fit to throw upon us over and over again thanks to the Virtual Console AND the 3DS. You don’t want to believe that Nintendo’s lack of diverse IPs is a grave concern, then that’s your choice. It is the perogative of man to delude himself anyway. The Wii U is thus key to creating those new and diverse IPs, and Nintendo has a pretty good chance of this happening this time around, much like it did with the SNES. Does Miyamoto need to leave in order for this to happen? Logically, that wouldn’t make sense. But Miyamoto’s step down, if nothing else, could be a symbolic abandonment of the past in order to step forward into the future. It’s like in Yugioh when Yugi sealed away Monster Reborn as a symbolic reminder to Atem that Atem must now move on. And this is what Nintendo needs: A reminder that they must move on.

    1. I’m not really bothered that he’s stepping down, more of who his replacement would be. One could only hope they’re either equally as good as him or maybe even better.

  20. I dont know if this is true, but it makes sense. Miyamoto stepping down doesnt mean he wont still be involved, and it already said he’s still going to be working with smaller teams. Miyamoto will be involved with Nintendo till the day he dies. Even if its just watching over certain projects. He’s been in the video game field for a long time, and this seems very “Miyamotoish” that he wants other people to break through in Nintendo, and start making big games for them.

I dont see this as a horrible thing. I see it as a new chapter for Nintendo. Miyamoto will still be working on smaller projects. Which honestly could turn out amazing. As generally the smaller the team. The more communication that comes between the members in making the game. This will also allow Miyamoto to mentor people just like Gunpei Yokai did him. There was Yokai, then Miyamoto, and now I think its time for the next in line of these brilliant men to step up. I dont know who it will be, but im sure time will tell.

  21. Reblogged this on hypersonic55 and commented:
Now this has been talked about many times in the past 2 or 3 years as far as I remember and hearing it again in gaming news doesn’t really surprise me. Shigeru Miyamoto is a legend in the world of gaming and everyone knows who he is and obviously he has said in interviews that he’d be leaving the development of Nintendi games to the newer generation of developers. And to be honest while I would be gutted to see Miyamoto step down so soon if December was the month of his departure from the position of EAD General Manager so be it. He’s obviously not going to be around forever, but I doubt after he steps down that he’ll stop being involved in future Nintendo games. I imagine that he’ll be supervising each of his key franchises like Mario, Zelda and Metroid. To be honest I doubt Miyamoto will step down so soon and I think he’ll be around for a while yet, though if it does happen then I’ll be surprised.

  22. No 1 say he is leaving , and i see some part that proves that this are lies or half trues, like the part about sakurai changing teams ,he is working whit namco on smash changing his team mean will delay the game something not nintendo neather namco wants

  23. I don’t believe this because Miyamoto does have a new IP he’s working on and is planned to be shown off at E3 2013.
But if it is true I hope the best for him, as I try to cope with that fact.

    1. Dumbest comment ever….he’s not jumping ship, that would mean he’s going to a competing copany because Nintendo is failing…..and that’s the farthest thing from the truth. He is stepping down to work on smaller projects with the new smaller teams and wants to make new IP’s. Nintendo is far from failing after having very succesfull sales of the DS and Wii as well as currently trending higher with the 3DS as well. Plus the Wii-U isn’t even out yet and its sold out everywhere…..so please, by all means explain how Nintendo is in trouble.I normally don’t feed trolls, but this is just poor logic at its finest.

    2. By far the stupidest comment ever. Ever thought he just wants to spend time with his family? He has a life outside of game designing, but then again … people are to blind to realise.

    3. I never considered you all that intelligent but I never thought you’d say something so ludicrous. I am now convinced you are Aeolus’s 2nd account, only he lacks the brain cells to say something so insanely stupid.

  24. U guys need to calm down, He is NOT retiring, he just doesn’t want the responsibility of being General Manager anymore to have some more free time and focus on his games. O.o

  25. Well that’s unnerving a bit. All I can ask is that he still designs games and oversees their development. Ninten wouldn’t be what it is today without him. I can only pray that those under him are ready to succeed him and be even better when their time comes
