Many people have found that it takes an incredibly long time to download updates to the games on their new Wii U console. Most people assumed it was down to Nintendo servers getting hammered with requests. It turns out that the actual file sizes for the games themselves are pretty big. Here’s the update sizes for a few of the major titles out for the system.
- Nintendo Land: 221MB
- ZombiU: 18MB
- New Super Mario Bros U: 29MB
- Video Streaming Apps: 35-45MB each
In first with a blue shell?
#passing is suicide
How is that considered big?
Depends on your frame of reference. Game updates on the Xbox are restricted to 2-4 MB (IIRC, Microsoft enforces this and the games are coded from the start to avoid bigger updates later).
Of course, PS3 and PC updates may get way, WAY higher than that, and often higher than the Wii U game updates mentioned in this article.
where do i get the amazon app?!!???!
On the menu itself. Press the amazon button
How is Nintendo Land’s so big?
The minigames themselves can be eShop titles and there’s 12 of them, so…
nintendo goes big even with their updates
That’s not big at all…
Yeah, I had 500mb of LittleBigPlanet updates once…
That’s what she said.
lol
Oh god LOL
The only one I would consider big is Nintendo Land’s, the rest seem relatively small.
Pfft, 221mb is “big” now is it? In comparison to Xbox 360, PS3 and PC game updates, Wii U games have fairly slender update sizes.
Never had to download a game update this big on the Xbox. Heck, not even above 4 MB either. I think you’re taking DLCs into account, which are a different story.
Of course, for PC and PS3, you’re totally right.
That’s because the updates on XBox are limited to 4 MBs.
it seems to be the normal. Onlye the Nintendo Land is heavier that normal updates, but it must be because the system is just starting to be used…
nintendo land is the only one that’s big, all the others are perfectly reasonable
well, if the updates correcting bugs, then its a good thing… dont complain about it. There is lots of issues after all, need to be fixed.
*Off topic*
Im getting my Wii U this sunday, and about the update im making it on the background, but i got some questions about it.
Can i pause and then resume the update while it is on the background?
Does the Wii U brick if lost electric power while it is updating on the background?
The background update only downloads, and then i install it, or it does both thing at the same time?
Please someone answer me.
Internet in Mexico is 2mb, so i want to have some precautions, because it will take like 2-3 hours updating
Yes
Yes
When it finishes it informs you to update it
And regarding the update in background
When Wii U asks to update, just say no
Thx a lot Mr. Pokemon Champ :)
That’s nothin’. As long as you have an external hard drive, I’m sure the anticipation of getting the digital downloads well worth it.
I can understand them thinking Nintendoland is big. But how on earth is 18MB for ZombiU Big? It’s small as all heck.
They are pickyng at scraps to hate
That’s a very good question. I’m sure someone has an external hard drive, download the digital copy and show undeniable proof of the memory size of the full digital download.
That’s what she said.
That’s really not that big at all.
OH MY GOD 18MB DDD: NO THAT’S ABOUT THE SAME AS DONWLOADING 4 SONGS!!! OH THE AGONIZING WAIT TIMES FOR 18MB!!! IT COULD PROBABLY TAKE 6 MINUTES D:!!!!!!!!! THAT’S IT THIS MEANS THE WII U IS GOING TO FAIL!! D:
/s
My ps3 caps out at 3 megabytes downloaded per second. That’s on a basic 10/1 connection.
6 minutes lol
Wait, does it really? Mother fucker…
I womdered why download speeds were slow on my ps3..
Mr. Rogers: To the land of make.believe! EXPOSED!!!!!!
So… Six seconds is what you’re saying?
This is big? Really? :l i just downloaded ‘the heist’ yesterday and i had to update it, the patch was around 3GB, 3 fucking Gigs for a PSN game. This is nothing, fucking whiners.
I believe these updates add miiverse to the games
So that might explain the size
Off topic, but when is the update that stops the Wii U from freezing supposed to come out? Mine froze for the first time today and did it 3 times.
Next week supposedly.
Cool
Black Ops 2’s update wasn’t so big, and it’s a HUGE title, I guess it just depends on the developer. Add me btw ID: JuanMannyAcosta
Nintendo Land and NSMBU are both by Nintendo (obviously), but the sizes vary greatly. It’s the nature of the game.
What updates are those?
Those are big? Um this is 2012. Those are small updates.
Dont big at all. Most updates are around 30-300 mb, all depends on what changes they make
Guess those are for Miiverse in the games or something

Then spell it right at least.
Sure, Ziegfried von SCROTUM… now go back and fuck a white tiger!
im writing this on my vita.
You’re probably the only person to ever do that.
I’m writing this on my 3ds.
writing this on my kindle
well most of them seem to be quite normal sized
the nintendoland update however is bad news for anyone without an external HDD.. can only hope there won’t be any more of those
That means there’s a lot of content smushed into one game.
Wow,turns out zombie U isn’t very big compared to the others.
not in canadian eshop
If those file sizes aren’t considered big, yet they still take a while to download anyway, then this matter really goes back to how supposedly slow the CPU is.
I hope you can download that stuff to your external HDD though, otherwise it’s going to be a massive problem.
Everybody shouldn’t really concerns themselves with game updates/patches in terms of their file sizes (except for that hefty day one 1GB system update or games downloaded digitally). Updates on some games on the PS3 and 360 are far more larger than what is posted here so let’s not make it a big deal. :)
And sometimes updates will overwrite themselves an not particularly stack every time there’s an update.

Are the updates stored on system memory, Or can you store them on external storage too? If you had a lot of games these updates could eventually take up a lot of the internal storage.
