Shigeru Miyamoto has discussed the origin of the beloved Pikmin franchise in the latest edition of UK games publication, Games Master. Miyamoto admitted that Nintendo don’t always have clear-cut goals when it comes to making some of its biggest gaming franchises. He also said that Olimar was added much later on in the design process. Here’s what he told the publication.
“There are a variety of different ways for us to create videogames. Sometimes from the very outset we have some clear-cut goals towards which we start working. On the other hand we have cases when we don’t have any kind of clear-cut image as to what kind of game it will eventually be but rather we have a very vague image of whatever we would like to establish or realise.”
“In the case of Pikmin 1 our original idea was how it would be nice if we would be able to see a bunch of small creatures doing something. Something like, they are protecting their own village and at the same time they are trying to grow and expand that village.”
“Later on we added the feature so that the player character will be there. But at the beginning I thought that it wouldn’t be interesting enough because in that original development mode the Pikmin were used as if [they were] weapons. To be utilised, to be shot by the player themselves.”
Man, Pikmin is so fun >.<
first? :D
you are late!
second
Queer.
Don’t make me throw a purple pikmin at you.
This will be my killer app for the Wii U unless Nintendo announce something else in the launch window that is better. I’m looking forward to this game even though I’ve never played a Pikmin game before.
Actually I shouldn’t say better because all Nintendo’s franchises are different but I’m looking forward to it.
all of*
You should try out Rayman Legends when it comes out!
Played the demo the other day. It’s a day 1 buy for me. :)
Same!

Truebut they also butcher future IPs due to them not trusting it. Like epic yarn. Poor prince fluff
You should go out and play 1 and 2 before the 3rd one comes out! :) They both have wii releases I think anywho? :) So why not?!
I’ve only played Pikmin 2 but it was pretty fun. I hated when my pikmin died =(
Whenever I play it it feels like I am loosing a bunch of kids! (I actually started to cry once)

I love how the new Pikmin is mineral, vegetal and animal at the same time.
The Pikmin series is an example of how sometimes it’s worth trying out a new game (even if you feel skeptical about it). Because when I first bought Pikmin 1, I had negative feelings towards it. It annoyed and frustrated me, and I thought it was stupid. I even tried (or thought about) taking it and trading it for something else because I regretted buying it. But I never did that, and I’m SO thankful. Because after I played it a little further and started getting better at it, it grew on me. I became addicted, and I couldn’t believe that I came so close to getting rid of it. I’m forever hooked on Pikmin, and I’m REALLY looking forward to Pikmin 3. : )
Thank you Miyamoto for yet another awesome series.
