eBay Germany Promotes Wii U As Lacking DRM And Mandatory Online

ebay_logo

eBay Germany has begun advertising the Wii U as lacking both digital rights management and mandatory online features in the wake of the Xbox One announcement from Microsoft. The listing translated says that the console has no used games blocking, no mandatory online and also no crap/bs. Hopefully this should play a part in driving sales of Wii U.

        1. I think it’s a sorry reflection of the current gaming industry that things like this are actually advertisable points when they should be assumed as standard.

        2. Its eBay, not Nintendo saying that. But I agree, mudslinging is always pretty underhanded. Even if Microsoft deserves it at the moment.

          1. i don’t see how this is mudslinging.. this is just stating facts.. all of these are true and all of them are ultimately of benefit for the customer

              1. well.. of course they’re trying to drive sales.. or they wouldn’t post it

it’s not like they post something like that just out of the good of their hearts^^

still props to whoever had the idea to make that advert

very pragmatic and to the point

    1. For Wii U sales in Europe yes. The Wii U hate is for the most part in the states. Europe and Japan seem to at least look at it with a balanced point-of-view.

        1. It’s too early for that because if Nintendo blows E3 like they did last year then Microsoft is right back in it. I expect Nintendo to wreck-stop at E3, but I wouldn’t put it past them to find a way to screw it up. They literally had it in the bag last year and SOMEHOW found a way to have a worse conference than Microsoft which is no small-feat.

I won’t give the eulogy to the XBone until after all the bombs have been dropped at E3. I think we will have a clear indication on where everyone is going.

            1. Yeah. I hope that we hear very little from Iwata. We don’t need to waste time watching him fumble through simple English words amounting to about 10 minutes of awkward silences. Let Reggie handle everything since he would have been the MC for the conference anyway. Let Iwata do Nintendo Directs for Japan.

                1. Good for you. I don’t enjoy listening to him which is why I mute it when he is talking and just look at footage when watching live. or fast-forward when watching pre-recorded.

                    1. Some people like Coke, some people like Pepsi. It’s not a problem, just a difference in preference. That is allowed isn’t it?

                    2. Ya…I guess, but when people that don’t like pepsi walk past a bottle of pepsi they don’t close thier eyes then stick thier fingers in thier ears and make loud noise’s (la la la la). Just sayin..

                    3. Are we really going there on this? Seriously. Grow up. If you like listening to Iwata fumble through English, good for you too. Never said it was a bad thing or that you or anyone else don’t have a right to enjoy it. Apparently you feel I and others don’t have a right not to enjoy it otherwise there was no reason for you to respond.

Next time I have the audacity to have a thought of my own, make sure you remind me that I have to clear it with you first.

                      o_O

                      This conversation is closed.

                  1. Disagree. But alas its just my opinion. Iwata has a humorousness to him. Reggie is like a robot, never blinks and waves his hand around, though Reggie is awesome. Iwata has more excitement and passion. I dont have trouble understanding him. So I say Iwata and Reggie should talk.

                    1. if they wanted these nintendo directs to actually have an impact on the general consumer they need to hire celebrities to do them. no offence to Reggie or Iwata.

              1. der…..r……a…….lawt…….uf………diff…….or…….ent……ways……to……use…..the…..game……..pad.

          1. It would be hard for Nintendo to mess up E3 when they are doing Nintendo Directs instead. No Time constrains, no Live messing up of demos. Everything is controlled by them. And they have confirmed a new 3D Mario, Smash Bros, Mario Kart, are all going to be there. So yeah…..I don’t see them messing up E3

            1. I said the same thing last year and they did it anyway. That is why I’m not going to get too hyped. Nintendo is at the best when they are 100% backed into a corner. I’m sure their E3 plans were finalized before the XBone colossal fail. If they were not, I would hope that they do not get lulled into putting it in cruise-control so to speak. Put your foot on Microsoft’s neck and finish them off. Show them what having a true ‘killer instinct’ is all about.

              1. Different format this year. Plus, there’s also the Best Buy demo testing we can do during E3.

                1. Closing the show with NintendoLand was not the reason E3 was terrible. It was the icing on the cake. If Retro felt what they has was not good enough to be shown, putting an unfinished product out there would not have made things any better.

The whole show lacked any real blockbuster announcements or anything of relevance we didn’t already know about. The Pre E3 Nintendo Direct was 10x better which is probably why they want to focus on that this year rather than a keynote speech.

          2. The only way that happens is if nintendo cancels all of its game projects and announces that they are discontinuing the wii u on the next nintendo direct.
Micro simply can’t take nintendo out.
Besides, we r getting most of our nintendo announcements before e3 even happens, so a weak e3 for nintendo will only happen if we get the best news before the show.
If that’s the case, then a weak e3 won’t matter as far as nintendo is concerned.

          3. Last years E3 being a flop was for 1 reason. Retro Studios backing out at the last minute. If they showed their game it would have been a successful E3.

      1. Not true. UK sales are abysmal, and apart from a sales spike when MH3U came out, it isn’t so hot in the rest of Europe, either.

        1. The lack of Wii U sales are a fact. That has nothing to do with unjustified hate that it receives.

    1. Dear, having to declare your every move to the company, and worse, paying for it, is nazi bullshit, no matter how you disguise it.
Wii U could very well get a new slogan: “No forced Internet connection, no charges for retrocompatibility, no bullshit, Wii U”

    2. that’s very losely translated.. what the original line is referring to are the unecessary features the other consoles have.. features you don’t really need on a console but are much rather at home in a set top box

  1. Well, Microsoft brought this bullshit to the table, and their fanboys want it to be considered a hallmark of technical evolution, so it is only natural that retailers state which consoles lack it; whether this is an advantage or not stands to be seen, but of course, no intelligent being is gonna be displeased with Nintendo for not enforcing the same kind of nazi policies Microsoft does, take that Ubisoft.

  2. Haha nice! I hope Microsoft learns a lesson from this, I and all of the rest of the gamers HATE what you are doing.

      1. Sony want to block used games but Jack Tretton said that in America PS4 would not block used games. I do not know in Japan o Europe

  3. Nice…. I hope Nintendo advertise this aggressively like how germany ebay is doing. This is gonna be sooo interesting.

        1. Well, we haven’t seen gaikai in action yet. I think I’ll wait till its out to test drive it. So far it looks good.

          1. After years of enjoying having my games downloaded so that I can play them regardless of how my internet is behaving, I don’t think I want to be subject to the whims of my crap-ass connection just to enjoy a PS3 or PS2 game once the actual consoles I own finally up and die on me.
Gaikai is a poor substitute for proper backwards compatibility. Sony’s not going to change my mind on this point, even if they are doing a better job on their console than Microsoft is on their Ex-Faux Done.

  4. Ok…
I thought no one can wet their pants worse than Nintendo did with the Wii U. Looks like I’m wrong.

  5. Does this strike anyone else as totally untrue? Yes it definitely does not require a mandatory internet connection but the Wii U has plenty of DRM. I think people have suddenly associated DRM with just meaning ‘a way to block used games’…it’s a lot more than that!

    1. well technically region lock is also DRM, however it’s not really a deal breaker imo

but aside from region lock there’s no DRM to speak of on the wii U

    2. also the original statement doesn’t make any mention of DRM
      it’s just always on/used games they’re referencing

    3. Actually DRM is any kind of rights management system that prevents a user from having full access to his or her software in the way that they want. The Wii U has plenty of it as does any modern games console. If you download a game from the eshop…it comes with DRM as it will try to prohibit you from using it in any other way (not that you could anyway but it’s still there). Best example I can think of to illustrate it is Steam vs. Humble bundle…humble bundle games are DRM free…they give you a link to download the entire files of the game as they come. If you download something from Steam…you tie the game into that platform and can’t use it (without some degree of fiddling anyway) without Steam..same for the Wii U and eshop.

Not intended to slag off the eshop or the Wii U, I’m just saying that the console, like any other console, is not DRM free.

Also…@Macarony64…Kid? Don’t be so condescending…how old to you think I am?

      1. “you tie the game into that platform and can’t use it (without some degree of fiddling anyway) without Steam..same for the Wii U and eshop.”

the fact that you can only play wii U games on a wii U doesn’t really qualify as DRM

after all you can’t really play a windows game on mac either

        1. Sorry perhaps I didn’t get that across clearly. What I meant was is you download a Wii U eshop game, it is tied into that particular console and account. Same as with Steam. This is a form of DRM, that’s not to say it’s an inherently bad or good thing, it is simply the situation; you’re restricted from using that software that you bought on any other machine.

  6. nintendo needs to do these things for like online advertisements, like amazon, or pull what sega did with sega does what nintendont. it should be like….. no drm no blocked used games, no forced online, no bullshit, just games how there ment to be. about the consumer.

      1. Sony did it a few years ago. Never heard any lawsuits about it. Nintendo just needs to be sly in those advertisements.

  7. I think this is smart. Now, even if Microsoft manages to have a great E3, if Nintendo can deliver, I think that the Wii U and 3ds will be the best selling consoles this holiday season!

  8. actually the last line would be more appropriately translated with “no unecessary/uncalled for features”

  9. It doesnt matter cause when the PS4 comes out millions of 15 old yr Sony fans will immediately lose their virginity. At the same time an ancient alien civilization will return to earth and shower humanity with gemstones and precious metals. The PS4 will usher in a new era of industrialism powered by the share button. Soon every action we take on a daily basis will be shareable on tweeter and idiotbook via the life affirming omnipotent, omniscient, PS4. Sonyfanfuks will reign supreme and all you Nintendo fans will be stuck w, Mario, Zelda, Fzero,Star Fox, Star Tropics, Earthbound, Metroid, Fire Emblem, Kid Icarus, Yoshi, Kirby, Punch Out, Wii Sports, Xenoblade, Last Story, and your gargantuan Virtual Console lineup. HAHA! Sony is so much better than Nintendo. BEYOND!!!!!

              1. Hello Mr. No One Ever. So glad you could pop in from non-existence to have a word with us, but you can go back now. We’ve entertained you long enough.:P

      1. Of course. I’m mature and only play mature hardcore games. So of course I do mature adult things like drugs. Beyond!!!

    1. Man if you like Sony so much then why are you here? Remember Nintendo is realeasing their big games around the PS4 launch and Nintendo games carry a shitload of hype!

      1. Unless it’s Smash Bros, Mario Kart or Monolith’s X, then I’ll be putting my attention all towrads the PS4.

          1. Out of the list it’s probably gonna be Mario Kart to release around the PS4 launch. :) And don’t put your attention towards the PS4! WE FANBOYS MUST STICK TOGETHER! lol Just kidding!

    1. Easy young Darth Vader, in a new hope you return to the good Side Nintendo. As of now you and the empire are striking back with the PS4 death star. Out heart eat your! Nintendo’s MASTER YODA has spoken.

        1. yep him and nintendo commander have a lair where they make top class meth. he thinks he is a robot and thinks hes from the future. now gamer is talking all star wars like and thinks hes part of an all mighty force or something. they are on drugs, they are meth users.

  10. This sure makes the Wii U look a whole lot better than the Xbox One. I will not buy the Xbox One. I hope most gamers will abandon the Xbox so this will not become the norm with other companies.

    1. in new versions of the Wii U, the new OS is already installed. And I believe it is a way to update your console without connecting to the Internet (using a disc or something.)

  11. Germany Sales of the Xbox One:
    1 unit sold

    Germany Sales of the PS4:
    230.000 Units sold

Germany Sales of the Wii U:
    1000.000 Units sold
