When the Wii was launched it came with backwards compatibility for all your GameCube playing needs, but the Wii U unfortunately didn’t have this aspect. However, courtesy of a third-party seller named Total Console and produced by Mayflash, you can now have your GameCube box-shaped cake and eat it with their new GameCube controller adapter.
Priced at $16.99 on Amazon, this gem is essential if you’d prefer to play with the GameCube pad. Simply plug the adapter directly into your Wii U and hey presto, those classics are just a button push away. Below is a description of exactly what the adapter does – let us know if you’ll be purchasing this in the comments below.
- Built in Turbo
- Compatible with all games supported by the Wii Classic Controller
- Compatible with all games supported by the Wii Classic Controller Pro
- The button A, B, X, Y, L, R and Z can be customized with Turbo
- To connect it all together just connect the Wii Remote Controller to your Wii or Wii U console, then plug your GC Controller to the adapter, and finally connect the adapter to your Wii Remote Controller.
nice, id like them to do this with other controllers too
Wow i might just get these
You already can… you can use any controller on the wii u they already make adapters for it… just use the google machine :)
That’s pretty neat, I still have my Gamecube controllers around.
Now there goes that Smash Bros problem.
So, help me understand…
We still cannot play GC games on WiiU.
We CAN use a gamecube controller to play a few other games though…
Am I close?
I’ve got one; works like a dream! BUT, it does not replace the Wii U Pro Control. Also, the start button has to replace -, + and Home so if you don’t press the button correctly you don’t get the right results and there’s the lack of the second Z button (but really, how many games rely on ZL?)
Worth the money though. I managed to get one for £10. See, if a 3rd party accessory manufacturer can do this, why can’t Nintendo?
At least you can use it in Wii mode when Pro Controller cannot handle that.
What do you mean by “press the button correctly”? How do you get it to tell which you want?
To use -, you have to press it twice quickly, to use + press it for less then a second and to use Home you have to press it for longer than a second.
It’s over, Nintendo is finished.
I love gamecube so much

Saw this the other day, looks amazing.
Sickr I want to you to include a notes that it is a classic controller not a Pro Controller to prevent confusion. This adapter will not work with ZombiU since its only supported Pro Controller instead of Classic Controller or Classic Controller Pro. It only register the Gamecube controller as a Wii Classic Controller.
Sorry I meant silvershadowfly.
Mayflash say you are able to use it with games that use the Wii U Pro Controller, but Amazon does not detail this. Either way the Wii U Pro Controller is not mentioned in the post only Wii Classic Controller and Classic Controller Pro. For clarification, we’re best to say that this adapter will only work with games compatible with the Wii’s Classic Controller and Classic Controller Pro. To be on the safe side, I wouldn’t purchase this to play with a game that only supports the use of the Wii U Pro Controller. I hope that helps everyone. :)
He specifically said it’s a Wii controller, not a WiiU controller, so that extra explanaition isn’t required at all.
Well, I should have said it REPLACES a Wii controller instead of “it is”. Sorry there.
Thank Christ. Now I can actually PLAY Smash 4. Seriously, those games are damn near unplayable without the Gamecube controller.
You mean Brawl.
No, he’s saying that since Smash 4 wouldn’t normally be playable without a GameCube controller because he can’t adapt to any of the other methods, this adaptor means that is is now playable for him using a controller he is better with.
Smash 4 is most likely going to be built with the Wii U gamepad in mind though no? It may even be the first of the Wii U titles to use two gamepads! That way there could be a 5 player mode similar to NSMBU with four people fighting, while one of the four uses an Upad. The one player that’s not on screen could use their touchscreen to interact with the battle. Opening large crates, picking up and rolling barrells, controlling stage events etc.
They could have no knowledge of Smash or any fighting game yet they can still participate. Perhaps that’s what the U in Wii U implicates? Last gen “Wii” were playing. We think the U is for us but we are the Wii. Perhaps the idea is now even “U” the one with no gaming experience can play. Look at Pikmin 3, There’s only 3 players but a fourth was planned, perhaps the fourth was scrapped but I can bet he was replaced by a character you can’t see. A fourth player that will use the gamepad, while others use their Wiimotes? Similar to Rayman Legends with Murphy…
So does this means I don’t have to buy a Pro Classic Controller?
I don’t know which one you are talking about. This does not replace Pro Controller (Wii U) but it can be replacement for Classic Controller Pro (Wii).
How many controllers does it support at once?
Never mind I looked at the images it only supports one game cube controller…
Well duh. You need to buy more than one to hook up other controllers. It hooks up to the Wii Mote not the Wii U console. The adapter makes it so your GC controller is conected as a Classic Controller, but you can still use the button layout of the GC controller. 💋
So would this work for any Wii U games that might support the Wii Classic Controller? Or is this only for Wii mode?
It’s plugged into your WiiMote and detected as a Classic Controller Pro. You can map the buttons.
I got this a few months ago off eBay for twenty bucks. It works pretty well.
Hey look it’s my idea. Yay. Well, I managed to get used to playing Smash with CCP, but I will probably still get this. I mean, the GCN controller is amazing.
This is great for playing Brawl on my Wii U. However, I won’t be using a GCC once Smash 4 comes out, i’ll be ready to move on to the Wii U Pro Controller. It’s hard to explain, but I want everything to feel “legit” you know? I doubt this will be used @ SSB4 tournaments anyway so it doesn’t really matter to me.
Already knew about this! They’ve been selling them for like a year. Guess I am just ahead of the game! :P I plan to buy two of them when Smash Bros comes out. Unless Sakurai comes out with his own GC controller adapter. 💋
This here is my biggest concern with Nintendo: too many controllers.
We got Wiimote, Wii Remote Plus, Wiimote & Nunchuk, Classic Controller, Classic Controller Pro, Wii U Pro Controller, Wii U GamePad, and then GameCube.
Wiimote is useless now as most games will utilize the Motion Plus. Some games might use the Nunchuk so that can stay. But the Classic Controller should be discontinued completely as well as the Wii U Pro Controller (no headphones and doesn’t work with Wii games in Wii Mode. Also, terrible name and can’t navigate all the menus.)
The problem with the (awesome) GameCube controller is it’s corded with a slot to an old console. Nintendo should leave the GameCube controllers to only playing GC and Wii games BUT instead of the faulty Wii U Pro Controller, release an improved, modern GameCube controller to act as the “gamer controller” and alternative to GamePad.
Wireless GC controller with clickable analogs (C-stick was kinda useless; might as well be another analog), headphone support, a mic, rumble, navigation, and Wii mode support (registered as a GC controller or as a Classic Controller).
Too many dang controllers and GC was Nintendo’s best IMO. They shouldn’t ditch it.
What you described as a new version of s GC controller sounded like a completely different controller to me. I mean wireless and clickable analog would be good enough, but a mic, headphone support, it might as well be another controller- which you said was the problem on the first place.
I see what you mean but the way I see it, this would be what the Wii U Pro controller SHOULD have been. And there would be no need to use old GameCube controllers. And while I would love to use controllers I already have, GC controller doesn’t work well with every game and is two generations back. Headphone support and mic aren’t visible changes. It would still look like a GC controller. The mic is tiny and all we need is a headphone jack.
tl;dr I’m not asking for a remake of GC; I want a modern GC controller instead of Wii U Pro.
No.
Yes.
Still have my 4 wavebird lol … probably dont work with this adapter.
No they work alright. You plug the Wavebird’s communicator-thingy that would plug into the GameCube into the adapter.
well, My brother is happier than a bird now. He was very stubborn regarding the controller for playing smash bros, saying that the best controller to play smash bros was the GC controller.
