Smash Bros creator Masahiro Sakurai has told GamesTM that he had thought about bringing the smash hit franchise Smash Bros to previous Nintendo handhelds. Sakurai said that they never really had the opportunity to bring the series to Nintendo handhelds as they didn’t have the capabilities to fully realise the Smash Bros universe.
“It’s not that I haven’t wanted to – I thought about it, I did. To be honest, we purely didn’t have the opportunity, it just never came up. And also, to speak freely, if you look at a handheld device preceding anything before the GBA, I don’t know that it would have the capabilities to fully realise Smash Bros.”

I actually do think a 2D sprite based version of Smash for GBA would have gone down very, very well.
there is a web flash smash, it is 2D, and i got to say, that even with crappy controls and some stupid characters, the game is pretty cool
and a gba smash sounds cool to me
Is that the one with Link, Mario, Mega Man, Sora, Naruto, Ichigo and a few others? Because I have that one and Mega Man has almost the exact same moveset that Sakurai’s will have XD

You mean the original Super Smash Flash instead of the sequel? If so, I’d recommend playing the sequel since it actually plays like a true Super Smash Bros. game and there’s not a single fan character in sight.
It would have been awesome but I think what it comes down to is what Sakurai himself wants to put all his time into. I’m glad he made Kirby: Air Ride instead because that shit is amazing.

I kinda wish he didn’t decide to bring it to the 3DS. I think it just works better on home consoles and the 3DS isn’t graphically as impressive so it is weighing down the Wii U version. Do we really even need a Smash Bros on the go? 💋

I’ve wanted a handheld Smash Bros for ages! Now my wish will become a reality, in another year and a half…
I’m quite busy throughout the week, even on the weekend. Also I’m almost never home, so I’d really benefit from having a handheld version that I could carry with me on my busy day!
I will admit I wish they took more time with the console version and add all the content they could, even if the roster wasn’t the same. It would be cool to get home after a long day to play a match or seven of a more complete version rather than having a home console experience of the handheld with improved graphics and different levels.

i wonder if Sakurai is going to do a collectors edition? Like, with Smash Bros. Wii U & 3DS packaged together and some cool “extra stuff.” Maybe add a deloper’s DVD a smash bros figurine of Mario and an ART BOOK! OMG… I hope they decide to do this. 💋

You mean AR cards? Thos things kinda (honestly) suck. They aren’t good for anything. I was done with cards when I stopped playing Yu Gi Oh. I would rather something mega-cool like an artbook with “how-to-draw” Smash Bros. Characters, Bosses and other enemies, items, etc. 💋

Well they can make the normal edition for those who just want the game, but for “true” fans they can release a special edition. I feel like with a game this big should DEFINITELY get a collector’s edition. I mean if some people have the money to buy such a thing why not make it accessable for them? 💋

I’m not hearing about a huge leap in weekly WiiU sales, is it happening or no?
It sold 2,5x more because of Pikmin 3 in Japan during its first week and will probably keep the Wii U’s momentum above 10.000 for a while…
Pikmin 3 doesn’t come to the west until the 26th july so we have to wait and observe…
I do not think it will increase the sales the same way as in Japan though. It does not seem like the game your average western gamer like. But I will buy Pikmin 3 and I will enjoy it :)

However I will be completely astonished if the Wii U sales does not increase by atleast 4000-6000 units during the first 3 weeks after the Pikmin 3 release…
That will be nice, and one of those sales will be me as well, but Nintendo needs to push more than that to build an install base to attract 3rd party developers.

The Wii U needs more third party support and I can guarantee that Sega’s third game will be included. Maybe they will announce Wii U versions of GTA and CoD (not that I will buy CoD) and some more exclusives. I am personally hoping for the Legend of Zelda but maybe that would not be a good time for it.
I think it will, at the very least, help the Wii U get its name out there. They’re advertising it like crazy in NA so I doubt it won’t sell enough to be considered successful.

Handhelds have always been a step behind the home console, so any handheld version would be a sort of downgrade. I don’t see it happening on the GBA or anything before, a DS version may get by, but it would only be like an enhanced N64 version.
The 3DS is a great opportunity to rectify this, and I’m glad I’ll finally get to smash on the go.

This is great example of what a sprited Super Smash Bros. game would be like.
Nintendo should host championship tournaments for Smash Bros and also makes tournaments for Mario Kart, a Super Mario Tournament, Punch-Out tournament, and Wii Sports Resort Tournament.
I think there is room for both home console and portable SSB, just like I think there is room for Pokemon on both home console and portable and now that we have the Wii U and 3DS now is the perfect opportunity.
