The Wonderful 101 Will Be A Mighty 10GB Download

the wonderful 101Looking to go digital-only to purchase the Wii U’s exclusive ‘mass hero action’ title The Wonderful 101? Well, all that mass action is clearly putting on the extra weight in the download department, as The Wonderful 101 will take a mighty 10.2GB from your Wii U hard drive.  Digital game downloads tend to vary a lot in size with Pikmin 3 coming in at the lower end of the scale at 4GB, but Lego City Undercover peaking at the very top with a meaty 20GB download. And with Nintendo keen to raise the digital bar with all sorts of promotions – including the recent European deal where if you buy Pikmin 3 on the eShop, you can get The Wonderful 101 at 30 per cent off – it looks as if you may need to invest in an external hard drive. Will you be picking The Wonderful 101 up digitally or via retail when it’s released in Europe on August 23 and North America on September 15?

  1. So in other words, the Basic bundle is totally useless for gamers that buys digital copies…

      1. Yes ofcourse…

But still this is just 1 game that makes the Basic model useless by its own for Digital purchases…

        1. Did you not expect this then? That’s one of the reasons pretty much everyone went for the Premium one. Unless you have a hard drive lying around and don’t care for the extra stuff you get with the premium.

            1. Yeah, I got one at the same price except from Newegg on the 4th of July. I just need a bigger SD card for my 3DS now…

        1. Just go and get an external hard drive. $50 for a 500gb at bestbuy and 65 for a full terrabyte. Then spend 4 dollars on amazon to get the cord to make it work on your wii u. Thats what I did.

        2. sd only works wii mode unless you have a memory card reader somewhat like a
t-flash but for standard cards (mini and micro can be used but need to be in their adapters) which u can turn it into a flash drive

        3. I bought a 32GB SD card for my 3DS when its price was still in the fifties. Now it’s in the low twenties and you can get a 64GB SD card for still less than what I paid for for my 32GB.

        4. I wouldn’t. the usb 2 will bottleneck it, so a spinning hard disk is plenty fast, and you could get a 500 gig for about the same price.

          1. I’ve seen the real Ben on these sites. I’m pretty sure the one we see today is a fake. Well obviously. Ben did always mention his mom, but he didn’t spell like that. Poor guy. He didn’t know what was coming.

      1. If you engage in spam, there’s something you should know. That I will hunt you down…
        AND I’LL DESTROY YOU!!!

    1. Commander, I know it sounds kind of dumb, but I own a basic Wii U. Even with all the digital promotions and Nintendo Land alongside, I was not sold by the idea of having a black Wii U – that’s why I grabbed the white, basic set. Anyways, I think Ninty should be made available white and black consoles in both sets.

That being said, even 32 Gb is not enough space for those who want to go for digital copies. Buying a external HDD is mandatory regardless the set we have chosen.

        1. Nintendo should also deliver more color options, like they did to Cube.

          Those consoles/controllers were really beautiful!

    2. as is the premium bundle… so yeah the basic bundle actually makes more sense since if you plan on downloading titles you’ll have to get an external harddrive aswell.. unless you only ever want to play a single game at a time^^

        1. A while ago I wondered how Nintendo will handle about the future firmwares for Wii U basic consoles. Nowadays firmwares are getting bigger and bigger, and, as far as I know, there is no information about installing and running a firmware somewhere than the internal memory.

          1. i wouldn’t worry about those files

there’s 512MB of dedicated SLC memory for the OS and another 1GB reserved on the main MLC memory
that should be plenty for such a stripped down operating system

              1. I think Nintendo is at the point where they can just rewrite the code which could mean 1) Little of Memory used 2) Almost same used or 3) LESS memory used.

    3. The basic was useless period lol. And either way I’m a classic gamer who wants the box and artwork so I don’t honestly care about this. Sucks for you though lol.

      1. I prefer physical copies myself so it’s not really an issue for me…

Unless there are many eshop titles that appeals to me…

      1. I was just talking about the Wii U storage itself but ofcourse it is not useless as a whole…

    4. It’s not useless. You just need a external hard drive. Nintendo gave us a choice. I have a 2 terabite external hard drive conneted to one

                1. MY WISH IS YOUR COMMAND MASTER COMMANDER! *.* WIIIIIIUUUUUUIIIIIIIIUIIUIIIIIIIIIUUUUUUUIIIIIIIUIIIIIUUUU *.*

          1. Sakurai is not going to include neither cutscenes nor story mode to the upcoming SB. I’m sad about that.

              1. Indeed. But, you know, I was dying to see stunning cutscenes in HD, and now we know we won’t to have that… I’m feeling like a kid whose cake was stolen before the first bite.

And about the story mode… I think it would make SB quite longer, what should be very nice.

              2. 1. It was too long
                2. You were forced to work with lame characters sometimes (whoever thought Pikachu + ZSSamus was a good team needs a dock in pay)

          1. Oh you didn't know!?!?!

Damn you guys need to get through puberty and give a rim job already! I’m telling you is pretty damn awesome. Make sure she cleans first but its pretty hot. I’m not even trolling lol trust me try it at least ONCE in your life, you may be surprised how much you like it ;) And glad somebody got my name lol

  2. SD Cards dont work for Wii U storage, buddy

And unless that promotion comes to US, im not buying no external just for a game that i wanna play, W101 can be beaten in 1 day anywayz

    1. You don’t know that. How about you actually play the game and beat it in one day, then you can talk.

    2. 1 day equates to 24 hours. Do you spend 24 hrs playing video games. that sounds like a person really doesn’t have a lot going on.

  3. This is good news. It means either 101 will sport great graphics, have a decent amount of content, or both. Also, WTF, Pikmin is only 4gig? Frankly, that concerns me for this title.

    1. well it does only render in 720p so naturally the textures won’t be quite as big as they’d have to be for a 1080p title

      1. The screenshots on Miiverse are very pretty, but the Pikmin have VERY little detail…. I’m guessing this also drops the file size considerably?

        1. if you’re referring to model detail then no
          wireframe models are tiny

the size of todays games is usually 80-90% textures
if you have a lot of audio dialogue that can increase the size aswell but nintendo’s games aren’t exactly known for much audio dialogue^^

  4. Nintendo pretty much designed the Wii U to use external hard drives for digital storage. Also, buying your own storage is cheaper than what Nintendo would charge for more internal storage.

Heck, you can get a 1TB USB powered hard drive for £60 these days. 2TB’s is £100 which should be more than enough for a long time.

  5. “it looks as if you may need to invest in an external hard drive.”

of course… this was absolutely clear from the beginning.. whoever thought the 32GB on the premium version would save him from having to buy an external harddrive if he wants to download games should have thought again

which is why the basic console makes a lot more sense imo

  6. why are people surprised about the size of this game? HD comes at a price… good texture quality comes at a price

just look at skyrims 6GB and the terrible texture quality in that game…

    1. indeed
Skyrims needed a HD texture mod(not DLC) as a must to be acceptable
and from the trailers, i can say this game is VERY detailed
also, I like the way of thinking
why ppl get so concerned with the size? it is HD, is not gonna be 1gb

  7. This game looks like its worth it. I wasn’t interested in W101, but it looks awesome now fsr… New IPs aren’t always supported, so this may be the 1st Wii U game I pick up…

          1. The good news is once we get the system, there’ll be tons of games (and hopefully at a discount) or we can grab a bundle. I actually think early adopters of the Wii U got burned pretty bad.

              1. As a day 1 adopter I can say I didn’t get burned. I love playing on my gamepad for one thing. love games like Lego City and Sonic Racing Transformed, as well as NSMBU among others. And I don’t have a computer so I use my gamepad for all my web browsing at home which works really well. And having earthbound and other games to play on my gamepad is sweet as well. There aren’t tons of games but I have a job and stuff so its plenty for me. Some games I haven’t even gotten to open yet. Plus I have a 3DS and am getting to play the Oracle games since I never played those either. There’s nothing like Day One Nintendo console releases :p

                1. I’m glad to hear that…

Indeed it’s good that consoles today have an internet browser which helps people like yourself…

    1. I was thinking about skipping it, the shitty rumors and all of it being short, but honestly, knowing it’s a 10gig download? I’m definitely picking it up. High storage for a Nintendo game, that has to be designed efficiently, most likely translates into this game will look amazing and kick some ass.

also, as far as it being short… I am GUESSING That gamers will want to play through multiple times, using different or unlocked heroes… Again, I’m speculating.

      1. (Check it out, I AM capable of being positive once in a while, don’t get used to it though ;) )

        1. Hey, Its not easy being a Nintendo fan- I don’t knock you…
There’s a lot of negativity from trolls, 3rd parties, and analysts.
I’m still sour from not seeing a 1st person Metroid in that Direct…

            1. Samus’s Other M look in Smash 4 doesn’t help. I hope that doesn’t mean there’s Another M coming instead of a Prime styled Metroid.
I don’t mind waiting, but that no-show makes me think its either never coming, or it’ll be here mid-2015 at the earliest (Sadness).

              1. Her look in Smash Bros 4 is irrelevant to the next game. They always base the character design off of their most current game, hence Twilight Princess Link in Brawl, and Kid Icarus: Uprising’s Pit in Smash 4.

  8. Off-topic: does anyone here have a external HDD? I’m asking because Nintendo recommends a HDD device with power-dedicated adapter, but I wonder if those USB-powered HDD can work fine with Wii U as well.

    1. I do, 500 gb. Works well… Expecially if your planning to go all digital with your Wii U. You probably already know this but don’t unplug it while the Wii U is on.

      1. Thanks for letting me know!

I’m thinking about getting a external HDD soon, and then I will consider a USB-powered one. The area close to the shelf where my TV is in my living room no longer have outlets available, and I would not like to have extension cords over the ground!

        1. Mine was 60$. Got it from best buy. Shopping online is cheaper though, they had the exact same one on amazon for 12$ dollars less.

    2. From my research, external-powered devices are recommended, but USB powered can work, but might only if you buy an additional “y” splitter cable to utilise two USB ports on the Wii U for power.

      1. Hum… I do have that “Y” USB cord – got one alongside a Blu-ray external drive I bought a while ago. Strangely, the Blu-ray drive works properly with just one connector plugged to the laptop… So I think I can use that “Y” cord for my future external HDD instead.

    3. I have a, 32gig micro USB card plugged in the back of mine. I’ll add another 32 (or 64) when it’s full.

It is fast access, runs great, and just BARELY sticks out the back, so the machine still looks sexy. BUT it’s more expensive to do what I did.

        1. I think the one I bought was $25, $56 gets you 64 gigs. (US Dollars)

So not TOO expensive, you just get WAY less storage for your money… However, I didn’t want a hard drive tethered to my WiiU, and I don’t download many games. Just all the Indie / VC games, (but I will download Pikmin since I’m not ever trading it, and it’s only 4 gigs of the 20 I have left.

also, it only sticks out the back maybe… Half a centimeter, so it’s Fairly flush against the back.

I will probably upgrade to the 64 gig version soon, then I’ll be set for a while. (it’s the same tiny size.)

        1. My micro USB drive has been working great so far, and keeps it easy to haul my WiiU around without lugging extra hardware. (I carry my WiiU to the bedroom for off screen play some nights, so I have a spare power cord in the bedroom.)

I personally recommend the micro USB route for appearances, portability (as I treat my WiiU like a hand held), BUT, it’s economically smarter to buy a larger drive and just have it sit next to your WiiU.

          1. True. The “storage capacity:Dollar/Euro/Pound/whatever” ratio is always lower when you grab a external HDD instead of buying a SD card.

But you gain in portability, like you do.

Since this is not my intention, I’ll stick to an external HDD.

            Thanks for the clarification!

          1. If that happen, you could take advantage and fry some eggs and bacon!

            :P

(I’m not fond of eggs and bacon, actually…)

    4. Don’t get the USB one I had a brand new one that I never used. DL games onto it and it worked for a little while then one day started freezing my system. Called Nintendo they asked was it a USB answered yep they recommended self powered and now 2 tb under $70 later I have a powered HDD that’s quite and works like a dream.

    1. well, size doesnt really mean time
1 video on 720p last the same as one on 1080p but the first one is 700 and the other is 1.5gb
im not saying it is short but the chances that it is gfx over play time is very high

    1. It has 5-play Co-Op mode, along with a battle mode, but I don’t know if it’s part of the story mode.

  9. deluxe also comes with the digital promotion of !0% back so i don’t know why ANYONE would buy a basic. got my 3TB on boxing day for under a hundred bucks.

      1. i have a Western Digital 3TB and it works. Why would I lie? I don’t need a special cord or anything.

  10. Even with the Deluxe version a hard drive will become mandatory at some point. For now the internal memory is fine for smaller games and Virtual console stuff.

There are a few factors that I’d consider before buying digital games over physical copies, but for a game like TW101 I’d rather have the disc.

  11. completely off topic here, but can you guys sign these petitions?

    http://www.change.org/petitions/square-enix-into-bringing-final-fantasy-xv-to-wiiiu-and-ff-vii-x

    http://www.change.org/petitions/square-enix-bring-kingdom-hearts-3-to-the-wiiu-alongside-the-ps4-and-xbox-one-3#share

they are petitions to bring FF15 and KH3 to the wii u. the wii u could handle these games with a little work and many wii u owners want them so im helping spread the word about these petitions to get a few extra signitures. please sign, hopefully square will listen to us and make wii u versions of both games. we have plenty of time as these games wont be out for a long time. ff15 maybe late next year and kh3 like 2-3 years from now. so we have to make our voices heard in that timeframe and get square to port. say something on miiverse too, and maybe nintendo will see it and say something to square. we have to do something people.

    1. yo ass better call somebody!!!!

It works just fine for the indie games/vc on my deluxe wii u. I do have an external hard drive but I buy my physical copies of games anyway.

      1. Oh you didn't know!?!?!

Same here, I download VC and indie only on my deluxe and buy physical copies of everything else. Damn Bad Ass Billy, we are in sync. No wonder we were the TAG TEAM CHAMPIONS OF THE WORLD!!!!

    1. It isn’t 100% confirmed yet, plus that is still more than Xbox and easily waaay more than Wii U. Hype still there!

  12. So I need a external 1TB HD more than I thought I actually needed…
Kamiya said the game wasn’t going to be that long, I didn’t expect its filesize to be that big…

  13. Hi! I gave up on rap songs im Comedian now!

Wonderful 101, i wonderfully wonder where they pulled that name. Hideki Kamiya well thats a charmin ol fella, loves to troll his fanbase all the time, probably the only thing in his job that he likes to do. Ah now i got it, its Kamiya trollin again, this game is actually 10,1gb sized. Clever ol bastard tried to make fun out of those who still have only 10gb free space on their hard drive. ” oh hey i have 10gb free space on my hard drive lets put 101 to it” “oh im sorry you forget one haha atleast your not microshits done haha”, Thank you great audience tonight!

      1. Lol i was just joking (i try to piss people off). No one takes this site seriously lol. And i only comment here when im takin a crap.

  14. Well I’m definitely going with the retail version but wow does this sound encouraging. I was worried the game would be short but that file size definitely gives me hope that this will be a decently lengthed game. I hope this game has wonderful sales (no pun intended).

  16. Wii U has been designed to promote the use of external hard drives for those that prefer digital. Nintendo themselves clarified that the reason for this is “due to the ever falling cost of memory”.

External hard drives are also incredibly cheap.
