Japan: Nintendo 3DS Sells 108K, Wii U Sells 28K

This week’s Media Create sales figures are now in from Japan. The highly regarded Super Mario 3D World slipped from number two to number four in the all-formats charts. Wii U sales saw a slight rise from 21,002 to 28,518, but it’s still performing below Nintendo’s expectations. However, the Nintendo 3DS continues to sell well in Japan. 1. Considering Nintendo expected to sell 9 million units by next March, it’s not that hard to see that 28k units in one week is below expectations. Hurrrrrrrrrrrr.

        1. No in the game section the number in () is the total unless Pokemon sold 3M copies last week.

In the console section the number in () is from last week

          1. Yea I made a mistake still the () in Mario 3d world are not including this month and none of the others are neither.

        1. So if FF sold 337k that means last week it sold 277k right? If you are going to be adding 3D Mario because it debuted on 11/21 you got to do the same for FF as well.

    1. The later number is the total. 99 + 40= 139.

You can see that Pokemon and Monster hunter both have sold around 3M total

    1. I just gotta say, the gaming journalists are just being plain terrible when it comes to the wii-u.
When Lightning returns was released, barely anyone commented on the fact that it sold the least out of the lightning trilogy. nobody commented about how badly the vita tv is bombing, or how badly the vita is doing in general.
It’s just plain unprofessional, especially when people keep doing things like vgchartz and making extremely negative press or when ‘pro analysts’ give out their opinion

      1. So putting that analogy to good use, you’re saying that people purely hate Nintendo, which quite frankly I don’t understand. What have they done to receive bad press?

        I smell patcher’s doings.

  1. I am sure it can be said for Sony products too. PS Vita is the newest console in Japan at the moment and it is failing just like the Wii U was doing.

    1. I love the to get a vita but for me vita TV looks like a desperate attempt to get leftover vita components to some use.

  2. Any why aren’t the media interviewing on how the Japanese feel about Sony being from there but aren’t releasing the console there first. They get new Toyota and Nintendo products first. Is Sony forgetting where it came from?

    1. The media has reported on that several times and it boils down to three simple reasons:

      1) Sony wanted to hit the markets in regions where Holiday shopping is a big thing, first, plus larger video game markets (primarily North America) before the Holiday shopping season in 2013.

      2) There are currently a very limited number of PS4 games that appeal to the Japanese market, so they’re giving it more time to get a few Japanese games developed for the console.

      3) Japan is a handheld and mobile dominated country. They wanted to make sure to get the PS4 out first to countries where there was the most demand.

Japan still gets a lot of products from Sony first (and many times, exclusively) otherwise.

        1. Guilty Gear has never done wonderful numbers, anywhere. I’m not sure that it will be a “must-have” title for Japanese gamers.

That said, I don’t know whether or not it will be a launch title for the PS4 there either.

          1. Yeah though guilty gear looks amazing it probable won’t do much. Most of them might wait till FF and KH comes. Japanese gamers have better patiences then us US gamers

          1. Because GTA v reached top 10 in Europe as well as USA and Europe. So no reason why PS4 can’t be released in Japan first.

  3. Seems like Wii U sales are picking up little by little bit. Each title like mario 3d world brings more people to the idea that maybe they should purchase it. But oh well.. Ps4 only comes in february to Japan

    1. Also why isn’t there an article about how 3D Mario World got Wii U’s to sell vs, Pilmin 3 that got Wii U to 17k. This is the first time a Wii U software increased after the first week a tittle debuted. 3d Mario got Wii U to get from 16k to 21k to 28k.

        1. Or how Wii U outsold 3DS for the first time being no. 2 best seller in Japan because of Mario. Not Wii Party U not Pikmin 3.

  4. You can already see what is meant by “Mario games have long legs.”

Last week Lightning Returns sold 3x more than Mario, but this week Mario sold 40,000 while FF dropped down to only 60,000 (only 1.5x more). Also a 7,000 unit increase in Wii U sales is a good sign.

  5. Also speaking of expectations the Wii U outsold the 3DS for the first time. Is the article trying to say Nintendo is supposed to outsell the 3DXXl? Is that it?

  6. At least it’s still doing much better than it was before. From only 2K to 28K is a notable improvement.

As long as Wii U’s are selling at all, and Nintendo aren’t giving up on it, than it’s all good with me.

        1. It would have been tons better to allow the normal vita be played on TV like they did with the PSP. Sony push to stronger hardware but their old Ines are more versatile than the new ones.

          1. Will they Sony gave Vita thesuper gameboy ttreatment to boost vita sales. Its working too. But for how long?

  7. I’m sorry My Nintendo news NEEDS to get rid of Sickr. He will spin ANY good news into bad news.

1)The 3DS(XL) is cheaper and has more key franchises on it.

2)The 3DS(XL) has also been out for longer then the Wii U.

Instead of seeing this as a plus for Nintendo you see this as a falling short for them. To further throw salt to injury you say its falling below Nintendo’s expectations. Since when do you know what Nintendo’s expectations are?

You could of posted how this is the second week in a row in Japan that the Wii U is the best selling home console but instead you choose once again to ignore the positive and try to turn it into a negative.

    1. Its actually more good in this article. Only thing faulty about it us 99k, 106k and 139k????????? Just to make a false article about 3D Mario world least selling 3D plat former. Didn’t N64 have a bigger install base when Super Mario 64debuted it sold 120k units at launch.

      1. Mario 64 was launch title. However mario being the first true 3D gaming experience helped him move units for new gamers

              1. Still have beaten the full game freakin Nick Brusier. As a child I couldn’t get past bear hugger but now he is joke. Love to see another punch-out for wii u.

    2. Nintendo spect to sell 9 million wiiu by the end of the fiscal year so I guess that’s whit a little math you can see if they are approaching that goal.

      1. The 9 million is bullshit and Nintendo knows this. Iwata had to tell the investors that. I can see maybe 7 to 7.5 Million Wii U’s after the holiday season. So even with math its just a bunch of crap. I’m already prepared for the bullshit articles to hit how Nintendo underperformed this holiday when everyone knew they would.

        1. I don’t care if it is bullshit or not the fact is that they are givinf there all to make it happen and that’s a win win to gamers unlike Sony abandoning the vita.

          1. Sony didn’t abandon the Vita. They’re using it more now than ever before. The problem is getting more major third party devs, especially in the West, to jump on board.

            1. Most be a different view points but for me the vita looks abandoned from Sony. Don’t get me wrong I love all consoles but I wish Sony did a game that force to buy one.

              1. What could Sony make that would “force” you to buy one? They have already put out a variety of games from their studios and have announced several more (and are creating even more which haven’t been announced).

Chances are, if you don’t like any, then Sony’s portfolio probably just isn’t your cup of tea. That’s fine. But you can’t say they have abandoned it. Games for the Vita that come from Sony include:

                Freedom Wars
                Killzone Mercenary
                Gravity Rush
                Tearaway
                Uncharted Golden Abyss
                Resistance Burning Skies
                LittleBigPlanet PS Vita
                Flower
                Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time
                Jak & Daxter collection
                Unit 13
                Ecolibrium
                PS All-Stars Battle Royale
                Sound Shapes
                Escape Plan
                MLB The Show
                Motorstorm RC
                Soul Sacrifice
                ModNation Racers
                Open Me
                Ratchet & Clank FFA
                Reality Fighters
                Smart As
                WipEout 2048
                God of War Collection
                Destiny of Spirits
                Hohokum
                BigFest
                Dead Nation
                Frobisher Says
                Helldivers
                Invizimals
                Murasaki Baby
                PS Vita Pets

And the list goes on and on. That’s *just* from Sony.

As I said, it’s really down to the big third party devs and publishers to bring out some other must have games from certain best-selling franchises to the system; companies like Square Enix, EA, Rockstar, Activision, Capcom, and Namco Bandai just to name a few.

                      1. Unless Sony markets it more and better, it wont. It’s doing better now than it was before, but it’s still not doing that great.

Major third parties need to jump on the system with exclusive games from big franchises, and Sony needs to market the heck out of the system to different demographics. If they don’t, then it will continue to trickle through, eventually dwindling out.

                  1. Sony use to make rpgs and great ones at that a return to RPG making would be great”for me ” on vita but I doubt it.

                    1. But does it matter who the game comes from if it is a good game? Even if SCE doesn’t publish RPGs on the Vita, there are already a good number of excellent RPGs on the system from other devs and more to come.

If you *really* wanted a Vita or were even remotely interested in it, you would be able to find something you could enjoy on it.

    3. Anyone who thinks those are good or even decent sales are idiots. Only like 130k for a console Mario game is shit and about 20k for Wii U is horrible too not to mention ps4, bone aren’t even out in Japan yet. Mario didn’t save Wii U and nothing else will

          1. I meant the games. If a game sell less than a so called flop the it is a flop too. If Mario is a flop having debuted at a #2 position then anything that sells less than that is a bigger one. Don’t you see the logic?

            1. It depends on the game. Not every game is going to be a best seller. GTA V sold over 1 million copies in Japan on PS3 since its release there, for example.

            1. When did the Wii flop? The Wii sold the most out of all systems last gen. It didn’t “flop” at all. It died down at the end of its cycle, like all systems; but it was by no means a flop (with regards sales).

            2. On that note, I don’t “defend” Vita; I usually just state facts to correct misinformation. I criticize where criticism is needed as well. Interesting how you seem to miss those comments quite often.

When I comment on something with my own opinion, I make that pretty clear (at least I thought it was clear) that it’s just my feelings on the matter.

If there are legitimate users who aren’t just trolling or looking for arguments and have something inaccurate to say about the Wii U, then I’ll chime in.

      1. 20,000 for wiiu is terrible? That means that the ps4 Japan launch was canceled seeing has the ps3 and vita is such a flop and not wort to mention the xbone.

        1. Your whole PS4/PS3/Vita/Xbox One statement……. That makes no sense at all.

20,000 for the Wii U is an improvement but not necessarily the best place right now. It’s good that it is improving though.

          1. But I haven’t see the ps3 ever beating the 20,000 mark ever. My comment to a hater should be damage controlled by him XD.

        2. The ps3 is 7 years old just like simply G mentioned above so any sales at this point dont matter to much since its already did its work and is on the last of its lifetime BUT if ps3 did that good then imagine how good the ps4 will do.

          1. It dosnt matter ps3 games are being debuting has flops. 8million consoles that games are barely breaking the 200,000 are even bigger flops than Mario selling 100,000 on a 1million one.

      2. And we get to laugh at xbones ridiculously small sales at Japan again, but Japan doesnt matter, right?
And we wont know how PS4 fares in Japan until February.

      3. To be fair, this game had two days on the market and almost all of Nintendo’s big launch days for Mario were on Sunday, so they had Sunday-Friday to get sales for that week.

        1. Yea true but it still sold the lowest out of all other Mario game launch titles and it didn’t do a “3d land” like the fanboys thought it would.

          1. To be fair we don’t know digital sales, so the game is flying at anywhere really. And like Simply G said its handheld market, 3d land had much stronger chance then 3d world. Its better just wait to the holidays are over.

            1. The digital sale is verry good, cause it is on number one right now, better then Windwaker digital, so you can do 100k in the 139k.

          2. How you know it sold the lowest if last week it sold 139k and SM64 sold 120k and that’s without digital sales.

      4. Ignoring you were wrong in saying Wii U sales would increase then a week later it would decrease. Remember you said that? Also from 2k to 28k is pretty good yo me.

      5. You blithering idiot. Not all the best games are out yet.

I f*cking hate your trolling! It’s emabarrasing! Wii U is an excellent console, you’re just too shy to admit you have one and think it’s awesome.

    4. you fanboys are a joke…… its like a miracle it even sold this much (better but not great) and your just jumping up and down cheering and trying to act like the ps3 or even the trash that is the wii havnt sold way better pretty much every week when they were relevant. these sales arnt that good. and seeing how overly defensive your getting from how its still under nintendos expectations is ridiculous. next week it will probably drop back down again, these sales are pathetic considering how its good for a new console.

          1. Also ignoring I never said “great” I said “better than” but you rather play dumb as if those two are the same but you rather say, the glass is half empty rather than “half full”

    5. Pingback: Wow Sega, way to show Nintendo up. | Conflicting Views

    6. 28K is pretty GOOD considering how bad it has been doing lately. It’s better than 2K. Well Done Nintendo, show us what you’re made of and please advertise!

    7. If the Wii U stabilizes on 25-30K, with a rise in sales when new games are released, it won’t do THAT bad! If it sells 25000 consoles each week the next four years, it will sell 5.2 million consoles in Japan. Now, from looking at the articles of N64 and GameCube on Wikipedia, consoles usually sell 3-4 times BETTER in North-America. So if it in four years sells 5.2 million in Japan, it will probably sell between 15-20 millions in North-America. As Nintendo home consoles usually sells approximately the same in Europe AND Australia as in Japan, this would lead the Wii U’s total sale numbers up to 25-30 millions, if having these stable numbers over a period of four years.

While the console will probably last a little longer, sales get lower and lower towards the end of a consoles life. Some games, as SSB, Mario Kart 8, Zelda, Metroid + Third party exclusives will most likely boost a consoles sales, but I’m looking away from those.

    8. Wii U outselling the 3DS (standalone, not combined with the LL)? Well, that’s something.

Good news is the sales do seem to be stabilising for the system. More of the same should restore some consumer faith in Japan. 2014 looks a good year for Nintendo, IF they pool ALL of their resources into the system.

    9. Imagine the sales of Wii U globally and not just Japan since we are not even japanese.

If Wii U is steadily picking up, imagine sales when DKCTF and others are out. I think Iwata might not be able to move with his cash haha!

    10. Well, look at it this way, Wii U is the best selling home console right now, that’s good, the bad thing is that the PS4 is coming up and it’ll be number one for a few months, until Nintendo released a Monster Hunter, Pokemon or something Japanese people love for the Wii U. I can see the DOOM posts when the PS4 is out, PS4 SELLS 300K IN THE FIRST MONTH OF JAPAN! BEST SELLING CONSOLE IN A DAY IN JAPAN WHILE WII U FAILS WITH 20K SOLD!
