Sony Looking To Purchase Factory That Manufactures The Embedded DRAM “Heart” Of Wii U

The embedded DRAM chip for the Wii U is considered to be the heart of the console and is manufactured at Renesas Electronics plant at Tsuruoka.  Several sources are reporting that Sony is in talks with Renesas to acquire the Tsuruoka plant. This acquisition shouldn’t cause Nintendo too many problems in the short-term even if production of the chip at Tsuruoka were to be halted. In August, Renesas Electronics expected to close the plant due to the sluggish sales of the Wii U, which ultimately caused a decline in production of the chip.

Thanks, Adam

  1. Could Wii be doom? U may only find out in time!

Or…Sony may be trying to buy the manufacture in order to keep it from shutting in turn keeping WiiU alive?????

        1. Not even the chip, the factory that produced the chip. (Also: At this point, they’re only in talks)

Certain individuals are just trying to blow this up to be more than it really is.

  2. Buying the company that produces the component vital to the production of your competitor’s product…hmmm…

either Sony is extremely in awe of Nintendo’s Wii U that they want to simulate it or…

Sony is trying to hit Nintendo below the belt out of spite…

  3. Won’t effect WiiU at all.
The company is under contract with Nintendo to produce the parts for the WiiU until the console is no longer under production. Frankly, Sony would basically be spending money on Nintendo.

            1. What joke?
That their consoles were mistakes, despite selling a shit ton of consoles? What exactly is the joke here? Fucking fanboys, you guys are literally brain dead morons.

  5. If anything, due to the friendly rivalry relationship with Nintendo (to the extent that the president of Sony has a few Wii U consoles himself), Sony would actually WANT the factory to continue making parts for the Wii U.

They’re just focusing on a different aspect of the gaming industry than Nintendo.

This is what I like about them. (It doesn’t help that the so-called “Sony Fanboys” {and a certain rep which I think lost his job for bashing the 3DS while praising the PS Vita} keep on bashing Nintendo’s consoles since they don’t realize this {yup, this includes the rep}. They don’t represent Sony themselves.)

    1. They may have just saved the Wii U if they have bought the factory to keep it open. If anything we should just form an alliance and brace ourselves as Xbox starts to take over the world

  6. i think the bigger story here is that the plant is “for sale” since august due to the Wii U sales … isn’t that 4 months ago?? … because Nintendo has maintained that the Wii U is doing fine … and that Super Mario 3D World would turn the sales around … and that Christmas would show the sales increase … and Black Friday … etc, etc, etc … excuses, excuses … yet, the owners of the plant that make the system weren’t holding out for a miracle were they? … Nintendo didn’t have enough confidence to purchase the plant themselves.

I didn’t believe it before, but i absolutely am convinced that Nintendo will replace the WiiU sooner than most people probably believe.

My Theory? … Nintendo is going to release something dramatic in 2 years … they’ll announce it within 1 year and it will have no “wii” branding or “2nd screen” gimmick and no “motion” gimmick … Virtual Reality is my guess.

    1. For fucks sake, the second screen isn’t a gimmick. People using the word “Gimmick” have no fucking idea what they are talking about.

The second screen is great. If you don’t own a 3DS, and don’t care about off screen play, fine, have your opinion, but stop calling what the rest of us enjoy, a gimmick and go play your non-upgradable PC wannabe console.

    2. Don’t you think anyone who bought a WiiU would be just a tiny bit pissed off?
Unless they going to give a huge discount to all existing WiiU owners, it would be a stupid thing to do on that level, but also it would cost them a ton of money. Nintendo just need to stick with it and deal with the product they’ve released.
Nintendo’s consoles are always modest consoles, the only reason Wii and DS sold as many as they did was because of an untapped market full of moronic casuals who have now just gone over to what other trend is going on.
WiiU can sell, and will probably only sell 40-50 million units, but that’s not a “bad” thing, that’s business Nintendo run, there’s absolutely NO reason to make a Nintendo console on par with PS4, it would cost them MORE money.

  7. Maybe Sony wants to help Nintendo , bothes are Japanse companies.
Lets hope the christmas and next year will be better for Nintendo :)

  8. lol this article is a fine example of DUMB MOTHER FUCKERS

SONY A NEAR BANKRUPT JUNK BOND STAUS COMPANY IS BUYING OTHER NEAR DEATH COMPANYS THIS IS THE ACTION OF A DESPERATE CORP TRYING TO LOOK RELEVENT

THIS HAS BEEN REPAORTED OVER AND OVER THAT SONY IS BUYING UP NO BODY COMPANYS TO APPEAR STRONG

NINTENDO HAS THE CASH TO BUY SONY AND THAT FACTORY AND PANASONIC

SO KINDLY TAKE A WAKE UP PILL

ALSO THIS HAS NO BEARING WHATS SO VER TO NINTENDO AS SONY WOULD HAVE TO HONOR PRE MADE CONTRACTS

ONLY A MINDLESS UNDER 11YR OLD CHILD WOULD THINK THIS MENT ANYTHING

LOL MY NINTENDO NEWS CLICK BAITING AGAIN

    1. even if Einstein used all caps, it wouldn’t sound intelligent.

I think this company likely fulfilled the contract … they produced more chips than Nintendo can sell … they’re done making the WiiU and they’re out of work. They’ve probably begged Nintendo to let them make more chips and Nintendo has likely said “nope, everyone knows it’s not selling now and it won’t sell later”

    2. everytime someone makes a dvd, bluray, dvd player, bluray player, bluetooth headset or device, they have to pay sony money. Can nintendo say that?

    1. MNN didn’t come up with that name. It has literally been labeled the “heart of the system” by many other people.

  9. Would be cool if Sony buys the company and lets it manufacture parts for WiiU, this could bring Sony and Nintendo into a closer relationship and maybe if things go well they decide make a new console together! I know its not gonna happen, but one can dream.

    1. If Sony and Nintendo came together and made a console with the innovation of Nintendo and the free online play and the hardcore audience of Sony with their powerhouse graphical capabilities…. they would rule…the world.
