Time writer Matt Peckham has written ten reasons why consumers should choose to purchase the struggling Wii U over the Xbox One or the PlayStation 4. Peckham says that one of the reasons why you should choose Wii U over the other next generation consoles today is because it has a quality line up of games which include Super Mario 3D World, Wind Waker HD, and Pikmin 3, amongst others. Here’s his ten reasons.
Ten reasons why:
- Because it has the games you want to play now.
- And it’ll have the games you want to play next year.
- The Wii U GamePad is a portable console.
- It’s just $300 — $100 less than the PS4 and $200 less than the Xbox One.
- There’s no annual subscription fee.
- It’s High Def enough.
- Wii U games are cheaper on balance.
- Nintendo has the eShop. Sony and Microsoft have nada.
- It has a decent indie lineup, too.
- It’s more than just a game system. (TV, remote integration)
Nintendo needs to work on:
- Dropping the system price again.
- Needs a killer Zelda or Metroid or new Nintendo IP we haven’t seen before, ASAP.
- And it needs more third-party games.
Thanks, Colette

i don’t get the eshop comment…
sony has psn and microsoft has xbl…
I know lol it supposed to say nintendo have Virtual Console and Wii backward-compatiblity.
I think he means that right now those places have no games.
Yeah i can see that…at least for ps4 there’s very few games on psn.
The 8 point is not complete… talks about retrocompatibility, xbox one and ps4 dont haveit. about the next retro for ps4 they say that will need internet for use it by nature.
Wiiu is retrocompatible with Wii and Virtual console “in the eshop” so this article has bad redaction (same as my english).
I’m a WiiU fan, but this list has many flaws. The WiiU really isn’t portable.
The controller is portable, he said that, not the console, the controller let’s you play the games in the living room while someone else watches TV shows.
at last someone with something positive to say about the Wii U…
Yeah, finaly some good news, peoples over the world buy the wii U.
I got it the wii u for a year and im still happy, AC4BF is great also Mario 3d world. I can play it without tv and thats great.
It’s positive, but it isn’t that accurate….portable…I mean, I guess it’s probably the lightest of the three, hence it’s easier to carry around. Also, PS has PSN and Xbox has XBL. Also, I think dropping the price again would just be stupid. It’s already 100-200$ cheaper than it’s competitors and that’s not including any store sales/deals.
Could you really consider the gamepad as a portable console?
Not really, except in that it has off tv play. It has the characteristic of a portable console of allowing you to play while others use the telly.
well it’s limited in its portability but it is portable.. that part is not wrong :)
finally i can play my ps3, my wiiu, my 3ds, and use the cpu at the same time
No, one could not. Anyway, the Wii U is in bigger trouble than we may have thought!
http://www.p4rgaming.com/nintendo-ceo-satoru-iwata-revealed-to-have-bought-10000-wii-us-to-bolster-sales-numbers/
I highly doubt the authenticity of this “article” if it can even be called that, its nothing more then tabloid trash and look at the date, it is complete and utter made up gossip and frankly I worry about you believing it more then the point of the article itself
that site is a well known “fake news” site
Doesn’t take an Einstein to see… more concerned about his naivety in believing it though,
And this is the beauty of the internet: Fake articles can be made to look real.
Sir you just went full retard and that raise the count to… losing hope in humanity.
That was in July
Exacly. Its not portable. It’s reach is very limited. I would like it to reach at least to my bedroom:).
And dropping the price again? Wtf.
Has he even tried it?
I would say yes too. My System is set up in my bedroom but I always find myself taking the gamepad in to my living room to converse with my family. It may not be, take it on a bus ride portable, but it is portable through your house.
You must live in a small place cause my niece walks into my room (her Wii U is in the living room) and it always dissconects. The portability is very very limited.
You can play it in a car so yes.
The Gamepad isn’t really a portable console. I tried using mine on the toilet, and it lost connection. :/
But other than that, this guy needs a medal! He hits everything on the head! Even the stuff that Nintendo needs to work on!
The GamePad isn’t so much a console on its own but I think we can all agree that the controller is basically what makes up the Wii U
That sucks! lol you must be too far away from your bathroom, my bathroom is right next to my room so I can always take it in there.
Pretty much agree with all of this.
God dammit, they need to show Zelda at the VGX, nothing else, unless a surprise Metroid game, which still would need to be in the hands of a really good developer but showing Zelda fits so perfectly and god they can’t fuck it up.
Zelda is popular now, the series is back on top thanks to Link Between Worlds, hype for the WiiU one couldn’t be stronger, it’s Christmas, people have either bought new consoles or are on the fence, they want to know what to buy next, 3DS has succeeded, it’s done amazingly well, ALBW was sort of the cherry on top, now they need to pass the torch over to the WiiU, get the ball rolling, which has been the WiiU’s biggest issue, seeing as their “worldwide casual dude-brah netflix” isn’t there, they haven’t had a big push into the industry.
If it isn’t Zelda…they’re in really big trouble.
I think that Nintendo haves better ips that can be show to the dude bro vgx viewers like a eternal darkness or f zero and metroid but Zelda is the game most gamers wants.
Isn’t eternal darkness from “Rare” tho?
Nope, it is a Nintendo IP developed by silicon Knights
I agree with that. I mean, why do people want to see Zelda so bad? We already know that it will be on Wii U! I would rather see something I was not expecting and save Zelda for e3.
How about Bayonetta 2? I feel like that is the most hardcore and mature Wii U title that’s announced but that could be my lack of knowing hardcore and “mature” games…
those are some solid reasons. although number three is wrong, you can still bring the console and just the power cord to make it a portable console. number 8 doesn’t make sense. other than that the reasons aren’t bad. if you choose to believe them that is.
Perhaps what he means when he says Sony and Xbox have “nada” is because the PS4 and XBOX1 don’t have an “e’shop” yet, at least none that I am aware of
The articule actually says that the PS4 plays PS4 games and X1 plays X1 games but the WiiU plays WiiU/Wii/NES/SNES games
he didnt say the ESHOP AND PS XB HAS NADA THING HE SAID:
“Nintendo has the Virtual Console and Wii backward-compatiblity. Sony and Microsoft have nada”
Correct this please.
+1 exactly
Does this guy own a WiiU? You cannot call the gamepad a portable console. Out of range, it doesn’t offer anything. I think he needs to just water that claim down a bit.
Is portable if you do the modifications also the people who needs to chill out are the haters. The next gen has barely started and their is enough evidence that this one is the sorts and may take the industry to a crash.
Worst*
http://img.gawkerassets.com/img/18vl34y7pxmznjpg/ku-xlarge.jpg
here is Kotaku’s chief, working on his Pikmin 3 review, playing it at the airport, if that’s not portable idk what is, all you need is a wall socket
You also need to bring the Wii U console with you (it has the disk drive and the downloaded games), but you don’t have to plug it into a TV because the gamepad has a screen on it. Nevertheless, it’s a very cool feature.
I do the same thing. Pack my power cable, unit and gamepad… I can console game anywhere. It’s amazing.
Ps4 can do the same…bwahahah even I can’t belive that XD.
you need wifi
1. BECAUSE IT’S NINTENDO!!! ^_^
He forgot to say that the games works has advertised.
This is really pathetic, playstation plus and xbox live have WAYYY more and better games, Eshop is one of the problems, cuase theres nothing tot download.
ps4’s psn and xbox one’s live, got nothing but ps4 games and xbox one games, there is not, Virtual console and backward compabilities
On ps3 and Xbox 360 yea on the ps4 and xbone their is nothing.
HERE SOME VERY OBVIOUS REASONS
ITS THE ONLY NEXT GEN SYSTEM FACT
ITS THE ONLY BACKWARD COMPATIBLE SYSTEM FACT
ITS BUILD QUALITY IS UNMATCHED FACT
ITS POWER DRAW AT THE SOCKET IS TINY FACT
ITS CONTROLLER CHOICE IS TOTALLY UNMATCHED FACT
ITS MADE BY A ACTUAL VIDEO GAME AND HARD WARE SOFTWARE COMPANY FACT
ITS FIRST PARTY UNMATCHED FACT
ITS SECOND PARTY UN MATCHED FACT
GURU LIKE SPEECH OVER FACT
LMAO!
lol most of your “facts” are just opinions
Actually their are more facts than opinions.
if u say so……………………………………………………………………………….
wii remote plus NEXT GEN
gamepad NEXT GEN
xpad lol just a wiiu secondery pad level device dualshock 4 a kiddys toy with a bulb on it and based on a 19996 ps1 controller
NOT FUCKING NEXT ANYTHING
19996? I didn’t know you could time travel! This changes everything!
19996? That’s the future not the past XD.
@nin ten dude Lol i love how you go down to the mentality of the troll in this site so they can understand. Gold!!
He doesn’t go down to that mentality, he clearly shares their mentality.
The Wii U price doesn’t need to drop anymore. Super Mario 3D World needs to be bundled in it though.
Dropping the Wii U price again would be a bad move imo. We’re already selling at a loss if I’m not mistaken, so wouldn’t that just make things worse? I can’t even…
@xpander2k agreed
He forgot to say that the WiiU with it’s Gamepad and Wiimote is a unique experience rather than basically being a PC with some missing features.
How it it unique? Every console comes with sensor, and the shitty pad is a used idea of the ds.
Finally some good press about the WiiU. By the way, the price is OK because the console come bundled with one or two games (depending of the bundle)
I agree with everything expect two points.
The game pad isn’t a portable games console in itself and also the price isn’t the issue. If it was then why was the premium console sold more than the basic, other than it being a storage difference.
The price is a problem but for a different demographic. For me is the price cuz I have bills to pay but if I can get a white wiiu for 250 even without games ill buy it.
I agree with price not being the issue. And I’m not sure but didn’t the Deluxe 32 gb edition have more/better bundle offers?
In the summer where i had to drive a long way, i played on my Wii U on the backseat in the car :9
Only thing I can’t agree with is another price drop. Especially since for $300 you get at least one game, which is at least a $50 value, $80 if you get NSMBU+NSLU. It’s a great value. I definitely agree on the HD thing though. Games can look just as great as they could on PS3/360. There’s no need for such high definition over-the-top graphics. I thought games were about gaming, not graphics? While I do enjoy a game that’s visually appealing, do I really need to see every hair strand, every little leaf on a tree, ever grain of dirt and dust and every little scratch on my car? Not really. I’ve played plenty of games that were fantastic and didn’t have over-the-top graphics. I have to say though that the only games I really want on PS4 are the ones I’m getting for free that are just cross-buy of games I already have on PS3 or Vita. I don’t plan on getting my PS4 until more games come out that are really worth playing. I made the mistake of buying the Wii U with only a few games so it went unplayed for a while after I was pretty much done with the games I had. At least now I play it more.
1. Aside from 3-5 exclusive titles, no
2. Maybe. Time will tell
3. Depends on your definition
4 Can’t argue there, it is cheaper shit
5. Yet
6. Enough for cheap shit
7. I’d expect that when gimped & less/removed features
8. ?
9. True. It has decent shovelware
10. Yup, and it’s also a HEPA filter!
People like you make me want to go to PS and Xbox sites to troll. If you guys really are bored out of your mind, that you have to come to a Nintendo site to troll, fuck you. I’m going to stoop to your level and start trolling PS4 and xBox sites.
Go right ahead, it wouldn’t affect me in the least. BTW, just BC I don’t suck Nintendo’s dick 24/7 doesn’t mean I’m trolling or am a fan of the latter, I could care less who fails at the end, my interest lies in which is company offers the better gaming.
Which’s why I prefer 3DS over Vita,& let’s be honest, WiiU having been out longer offers little to no challenging games while the rest’re easy, casual garbage appealing more to tots. Will that change by 2014? Who knows, after owning a Wii, I’m skeptical.
#5: Really glad he addressed this. The Wii U is the ONLY system out of the three w/ free online multiplayer.
It would be outrageous if Nintendo wanted money for their shitty online services. I like Nintendo, but it is undeniable that Nintendo clearly does not know how to offer decent online experiences.
Nintendo has had 3rd party support problems since N64, I wouldn’t expect this to change anytime soon.
This guy wrote the truth.
Only point I kinda disagree with is the “They need more third-party games”. I think that people who buy Nintendo systems actually don’t wanna play third-party games. But it would be a bonus, so why not.
He also forgot to say : “Wii U plays and feels different and is not simply a PC wannabe that can’t run 60fps properly in 2013 like it’s competitors”. Yeah…
#3: Fail. There’s nothing portable about the GamePad.
#8: Fail. Sony has the Playstation Network, which is awesome. Microshaft has the Xbox Live Arcade, which has a good library.
And as for dropping the system price again, no. $299.99 is wonderful enough as it is. For now. In about a year, maybe a $50 drop, but for now, no.
Other than those gripes, he makes a good argument. Just comes off as too much of a fanboy. Not bad, really.
PSN now has annual subscription thanks to PS+, so Nintendo still has advantage with their wi-fi.
All they need also is better marketing is all. I agree with all but number 3 and eight xD
Wait, dropping the price again? A 100$-200$ difference is not enough?!
1.Agree
2.True
3.Has the characteristics of a portable console, in fact, you just need a power supply to play, but that doesn’t mean Wii U is a portable console as a whole.
4.Agree
5.True
6.Has a point, Wii U might be not that powerful, but it can pull pretty graphics/definitions.
7.Probably
8.They have PSN/Xlive, I think he wanted to point out Wii retrocompatibilty and virtual console.
9. True.
10.I don’t care about extra TV features, so, meh…
1.Pointless
2.Agree
3.True
6) Power isn’t everything. Don’t get pulled in by the GHZ and core count.
#3 What Nintendo needs to work on:
Maybe they should let 3rd parties go nuts on the 2/3ds, while Nintendo works on the struggling Wii U. In all my years of gaming (20+), I’ve never seen such imbalance from them, fully supporting a handheld while their home console tanks…
My god, this is bad writing. The articles says: “Nintendo has the Virtual Console and Wii backward-compatiblity. Sony and Microsoft have nada”. The reporter claims that, while PS4 will have some sort of update for backward compatibility, the reality is that you need to be 100% online and is not as effectives as WiiUs. Also, the VC on Nintendo has a very distintive and exclusive content. The reporter never said that about the eShop. He only claims that indie devs are there and Nintendo is support them.
1. How would he possibly know what everyone wants to play ?
2. See above.
3. The Gamepad is not a portable console. A portable console would be a device you can take anywhwhere with you to play. The 3DS is a portable console, the Vita is a portable console, the Gameboy is a portable console the Gamepad is not a portable console. The Gamepad is a wireless controller.
4. You can not expect a device with superior hardware to cost as much as a device with inferior hardware.
5. True, there is not. But you could argue if it really is a bad thing to have to pay ~$6 a month to get all the exclusive services and free games. On the PS4, that is. But yes, generally seen, you do have to pay annual fees on two of the consoles while you do not on the WiiU.
6. High Def enough… Again, he can not speak for the 7 billion other people on this planet, he can not possibly know if it really is enough for everyone just because it is enough for him.
7. True.
8. What does he mean, nada ? Both consoles have their own shops. And I do not think the WiiU had a fully established eshop when it launched either.
9. There are many indie titles coming up for both XboxOne and PS4 too, especially the latter.
10. True. Though the other two have their advantages too, especially the XboxOne, since it is even being marketed as a multimedia device.
I don’t know, his reasons don’t seem too convincing to me.
When I said advantages at #10, I was talking about features that make the XboxOne to something more thab just a gaming device. I was not trying to say it has advantages that make it a better console than the other two. Thought I should point that out, since it seems a little misleading.
1. Not for me….
2. Maybe? Smash Bros will be released on 3DS as well, and X is the only game right now that makes me want to play a Wii U.
3. Yawn.
4. You get what you pay for.
5. You get what you pay for. Nintendo’s online gaming struture is laughable.
6. Hi-def “enough”. lol? So why do most Wii U games look mediocre? Because developers have to focus on yet another gimmicky gameplay feature instead of actually making the game look good.
7. Cheaper and with less features in 3rd party games because no one will buy the system.
8. Backwards compatibility and the virtual console are still a good selling point for the system, so I agree.
9. Eh. I suppose.
10. You can make this argument for the PS4 and Xbox One (the latter especially).
Not impressed.
Because if you knew anything about video game development, you would know that porting a game m 7th gen to 8th gen will not give better performance as its not taking advantage of the different hardware configuration. In many cases a game needs to be developed from scratch.
The game pad is hardly a portable console. That’s a stretch —- like most of these points.
1. Some games yes, but pretty strong launches from XBONE and PS4 as well. I mean COD, AC4, Killzone, Knack, Killer Instinct, Dead Rising 3, Ryse, Forza 5, FIFA 14, Peggle 2, Infamous 2, Resogun.. Pretty damn expresive compared to New Super Mario Bros Wii U, Zombie U and… Well that it I guess.
2. Two or three games maybe (smash bros, Zelda, Mario kart), XBONE and PS4 will have 10-20 blockbuster titles.
3. It is not, as it requires the Wii U within short range to work. It is an advanced toy or a mediocre tablet at best.
4. True that, but it’s also been out a year. Still too expensive though.
5. True, but there aren’t really any online titles either at all. And those few there are, no one is playing and the servers will probably shut down soon. Don’t forget you get free games with both ps+ and xbox live gold these days too.
6. Yeah, but XBONE and ps4 are even
higher def. 4K. Much better looking games. Argument invalid. Xbox360 and ps3 was high def, and can also be bought right now you know.
7. Where I live, Wii U games are still a 100 dollars a piece, just like PS4 and XBONE games (Denmark).
8. Well that’s just not true. Both consoles even released with a bunch of downloadable exclusives. Nintendo rarely releases anything on the eshop, however we are to get a steady stream of games each week for the new platforms.
9. Where? Little inferno? Decent?
10. So it’s a gaming system + a remote. Like those you can buy for a penny at any discount shop. Oh and by the way, Nintendo TVii still doesn’t work in most of the world.
Nintendo step up your A-game, the Wii U is pathetic.
I think you’re just entertaining yourself with your own logic.
See, he’s smart. And he didn’t even list the backwards compatibility.
Why did he say high-def enough, though? 1080p IS high-def.
And yes, those things Nintendo needs to worry about are spot on. BRING ON THE DAMN METROID GAME NOWWWWWWW OR SOME DAMNED ANNOUNCEMENT ABOUT IT.
Looks like you haven’t seen any graphic comparisons between XB1/PS4/WiiU, the WiiU is not high def enough for today’s possibilities. The difference is pretty damn significant. Whether you like it or not, Nintendo is a whole generation late with the WiiU. And I find it quite pathetic that they seriously have to mention “Nintendo in HD !!!!!” in their ads and e-mails. HD is nothing new. It should be a given at today’s age, we’re in 2013.
Hd enough? People are so blind. No one wants that shitty thing
The things list are all true to some extent, it’s pretty obvious. Then there are people referring it to the XBOX 360 and PS3, those are last gen consoles people. It’s all about next gen! Nobody(almost nobody) wants a PS3 or XBOX360 anymore, they are outdated because most of their fans are graphic whores and want better visuals.
Really? -__- the logic of fanboys of any console never ceases to amaze me. The lot of you are complete idiots. You know what you said is untrue, but you won’t admit it. You are only saying it because of brand loyalty. Pathetic. Join the real gamers, those who love all platforms, only then can you be considered a gamer.
I’d much rather have a Starfox game than a zelda or metroid. What’s wrong with Starfox? F Zero could probably work too.
I am getting tired of hearing this over and over again.
1.Because it has the games you want to play now. – Sure
2.And it’ll have the games you want to play next year. – Yes
3.The Wii U GamePad is a portable console. – I guess so
4.It’s just $300 — $100 less than the PS4 and $200 less than the Xbox One. – No shit
5.There’s no annual subscription fee. -No shit
6.It’s High Def enough. – Enough? Its 1080p and 60fps. No console goes higher then that for the 8th gen.
7.Wii U games are cheaper on balance. – Uh…what? They are all $60
8.Nintendo has the eShop. Sony and Microsoft have nada. – PSN store and XBL MarketPlace?
9.It has a decent indie lineup, too. – True
10.It’s more than just a game system. (TV, remote integration) – True
Nintendo needs to work on:
1.Dropping the system price again. – NO THATS NOT THE FUCKING ISSUE.
2.Needs a killer Zelda or Metroid or new Nintendo IP we haven’t seen before, ASAP. – 2014…we all know all the good stuff is coming
3.And it needs more third-party games. – Fuck off, just fuck off. Besides Destiny, It needs NO MORE 3RD PARTY.
1- For me, no. But I still agree with this.
2- Agreed.
3- But you can’t take it with you anywhere and play.
7- Cheaper games for lower quality.
8- Yea, let’s pretend Playstation Store and Xbox Marketplace doesn’t exist.
10- So is Wii U’s competitors.
They mean portability as in terms of: All you need is an outlet and requires no TV. My gf’s parents live on Vancouver Island and we take the ferry over the water often. I always stuff the WiiU in my back pack with me and we sit next to one of the many outlets on the ferry during the ride. I have portable devices as well, but being able to play a console game without a couple hundred dollars on one of those portable TV briefcase things they have at Gamestop while travelling is awesome. You could also play in the car but I don’t recommend that. My uncle used to have LCD screens in his van and I’d bring and hook up my little PSone for the road. While playing…we killed the vehicle battery >.<
While I do like the Wii U, these are some terrible reasos. Very few even make sense. It seems as if a desparate fanboy wrote it. :/ it doesn’t mention any of the Wii U’s actual strengths.
“It has a decent indie lineup, too.” ???
I wonder how much Sony paid this imbecile to write like a lobotomized preteen strung out on Prozac and cough syrup?
It’s 2013, Q4, the Wii U has had price cuts all year.
SEGA GENESIS MASTER RACIST
