New Super Smash Bros. Wii U Screenshot Details Gameplay Tactics

Super Smash Bros. director Masahiro Sakurai has been firing many of the game’s Wii U and 3DS images for a number of months onto Miiverse and, occasionally, we receive extra details on gameplay. Last week, Sakurai explained the technical changes to edge-grabbing or edge-guarding – a welcome change for those who play Super Smash Bros. competitively – but today the director has focused on gameplay tactics.

The Wii U screenshot above showcases Link and Pit unleashing their powerful archery skills on each other, amidst the beautiful Wuhu Island background from the Pilotwings stage. But when their arrows meet, they simply disperse and neutralise. Here’s what Sakurai said in his Miiverse post:

“Both Link and Pit use bows, but when they fire simultaneously, their arrows meet and cancel out closer to Pit. Besides attack power and projectile speed, there are many elements that affect tactics, such as accuracy, vulnerability after attacking, and even seemingly unrelated features like a character’s physical abilities.”

    1. We don’t know the release-date, and they’ve already announced 4 new characters so far (Megaman, Villager, WiiFit Trainer, Rosalina). Stop complaining.

      1. I predict that Lady Palutena will descend to the battle…
I predicted this waaay before the image leak of her too and Its very likely shes in.

      2. Kid Icarus Uprising (3DS) was made by Sakurai so there HAS to be more than one character from that game in Smash, especially cuz KIU was made by him and he is making Smash…plus, he was shown off in the first trailer.
Im saying Palutena because she was the most noticeable and recognizable. Dark Pit may have caught some eyes but he would be considered a clone so Dark Pit should be a costume for normal Pit.
I’m also sure that a Character from Metroid will be confirmed in sometime as well, Samus is the only character from the popular Metroid series and it will be weird if shes in alone again.

      3. I’ve been fucking praying not long after Brawl’s launch for Sylux. I can literally see him as a genuine and working character. He just feels like he can fit into this game, or at least he does for me.

  1. Yesss, more focus on gameplay mechanics , thats what i like to hear. Leave all the new character hype closer to the release or when i actually play the game. You don’t spoil the ending of a game, so why spoil an unlockable character?

I would like to hear some of the stage music though….Brawl had an awesome soundtrack, and the Mega Man 2 title screen X Dr Wily stage theme from the trailer was amazing.

  2. I just want him to announce Palutena. With all the kid Icarus related pics lately it kinda feels like a build up to the announcement…

      1. I think Palutena would be an AWESOME character! Who would you rather have in that “slot”?

      2. Magnus from Kid Icarus: Uprising? That guy’s a beast. If they were to use a godly character from Kid Icarus, I’d rather them go with either Viridi or Hades, both got more personality than Palutena.

  3. the only thing i want to know so far is to see both the Hand siblings and Giga Bowser as they did on Melee
if they announce that, then this Smash would be awesome for me

  4. I’m glad to see that Sakurai is implementing a bunch of deep mechanics such as this and edge trumping. Now if only you can bring back wave-dashing and L-cancelling…

    1. I prefer is Wave dashing were to return. L-cancelling is a shit mechanic. You’re constantly forced to L-Cancel. It means new players can barely get into the tactical side of the game, because they will get punished for using aerials, until they learn this annoying unintuitive input.

  5. It seem that they, or rather Sakurai, want to make SSB 4 the most competitive Smash Bros of them all. Do somebody think it can beat Mele in that regard?

    1. And a Nintendo-oriented site would definitely not report on it. Go post it on IGN, Gamespot, Dualshockers or something.

  6. all these new mechanics are cool, but the gameplay better be fast like project m and not drawn out like brawl.

  7. Awesome! Link needed a boost in abilities and Pit’s arrows were ANNOYINGLY good.

Sakurai really is trying his best to make all the characters balanced.

    1. I love the effort he’s putting into this game. From his tweets to his small interviews, he sounds like he is really putting his heart into this game and for that I am so grateful.

    1. They do. Sakurai just explained how Link’s arrows fire faster than previous games, and Pit’s arrows are slower.

  8. A little disappointed that Lucario was announced. A fun fighter, no doubt, but the repetition was enough to quirk a brow at. I’m really hoping they bring in a gen 6 pokemon… hell, maybe revive the Trainer to have the Kalos starters instead of Kanto’s.

Oh, and Chrom. They desperately need Chrom.
