Nintendo Hasn’t Given Up On The Idea Of Mario Kart Double Dash’s Dual Racers

Mario Kart 8 producer Hideki Konno told IGN that Nintendo hasn’t completely given up on the idea of including dual racers which were last seen in Mario Kart: Double Dash on the Gamecube. Konno said that if the team have any innovative and unique ideas regarding duel racers then they may implement the feature in a future Mario Kart title.

“It wasn’t just a simple case of, ‘Hey, we’re not going to do that again,'” Konno said. “We really think the two racers together in one kart of Double Dash was really unique, and we thought it worked really well.”

“We’ve got that in our pocket, so if we come up with any new, cool ideas that utilize having two players racing together, we will definitely grab that and possibly bring it back out.”

“Having two players racing together, it does have a pretty high cost in terms of processing power, so that is an obstacle,” Konno said. “That being said, if we could come up with some ways around that processing cost, we may have two players, maybe even three players, racing together. If we could come up with some cool ideas, we’ll definitely use them.”

Thanks, Jester

      1. As a free mode update, it will only make MK8 more GOD and fun. :) Its just a metter of intelligently incorporate it while making it balanced enough for fair gameplay.

    1. Man, my hype for MK8 is through the roof!! I haven’t been this excited for a Wii U game since Super Mario 3D World! I have a feeling that even though this game is just a year and a half through Wii U’s life, it’ll go on and be remembered as one of it’s best games. Even after the end of the Wii U’s lifespan. :’)

      1. wow… thats not long, from 3d world to mk 8.
the last time i was excited
resident evil 4 / mario galaxy wii / dkcr wii / the last of us ps3 / zombie u / zelda between worlds 3ds.
so in the last ceveral years there was nor mutch…
my game i cant finally wait.
        the evil within.
there is no game on the u announced that i want. maybe 2016/17 zelda and eternal darkness.

    2. Ok, here me out, first They praised the Wii U for its power, now…. They say they cant do something they did with THE GAMECUBE because of processing power….. My thought, unfortunately the Wii U may only be useful for Virtual Console, platformers, and basic go-around games, why Nintendo? I want a reason to buy the Wii U, please provide with one!

      1. I don’t think you understand how technology works. He said 2 players on one cart takes more processing power but not that they can’t do it. Hell I could do it and I’m just one guy.

        1. Ok, so why didn’t they do it? They said, oh that would be cool, and then didn’t think of anything cool
To do with it? Then what the fuck were they thinking in the first place? Maybe they thought double dash sucked and said, ha, why would we make another shitty game?, unless they knew they couldn’t include it into the game (MK8) without sacrificing other parts of the game due to “processing power”, hell ask if any PS4 or Xbox One developers ever said anything like that?! They practically have unlimited power over the Wii U and it keeps being proven time and time again, WHY NINTENDO not give me something to buy your console, damn it, make it worth my damn money and time!

          1. Because Nintendo is always on some “we must innovate with every idea or feature we implement or we dont add it” bullshit. They only say this for the stuff we ask, but when it comes to mario, we get rehash shit with little to no innovation.

      2. They want to have a Double Dash mode on the next Mario Kart game, but they can’t at the moment cause Nintendo consoles can’t handle it yet. If Mario Kart 10 were to have this mode, the next Nintendo console would need to have a disc player similar to Blu-Ray

  1. I don’t get why they don’t just make double racers a mode. And worst case scenario cut the amount of racers in have so the processing power isn’t as affected.

    1. I don’t get why everything Nintendo does has to be something incredibly innovative. If that was the case than Mario kart wouldn’t be selling as well as it does.

      1. They probably try and incorporate something new into every idea they re-use, so they don’t end up just rehashing the past. Of all the developers out there, Nintendo is definitely the most innovative, so they probably hold themselves to a certain standard.

        1. nintendo is no innovative. really mk8 and ssb are rehashes, barebones, and kiddy with nothing new. battlefield 4 and rise son of rome are the real innovative gamess

          1. Battlefield 4 is literally a slightly prettier version of BF3 with a little more content. I know because I’ve played both. Also, Rise is a terrible game.

            1. Ignore that brain dead moron. It doesn’t know what a good or creative game is even if it beat its ass or fucked his mother in front of it.

          2. …Mommy of this damaged drone, this poor reject is loose again…

Seriously, how is BF4 even innovative with its reused BF3 feel (BF3 was more innovative of its series) plus BF4 is still plagued with BS bugs thanks to EA rushing Dice’s game to combat another shitty game COD Ghosts and Ryse..don’t even start with that cliché and overly used Roman Gladiator shit we always see in every fucking format possible. None of those fucking games aren’t even close to be polished and highly praised/scored as Nintendo’s 30 year streak of titles. Keep hating and being a retard on things that are invalid to make your lame ass trolling stick.

          3. Nintendo isn’t innovative? Alright, I’ll play. Let’s for the moment ignore the argument that they’re “kiddy”, as that’s a matter of taste, and thus, not a valid argument. Mario Kart 8 has introduced a few new mechanics to the series. Super Smash Bros. is a fighting game, you can’t do too much new with it, the 4 main entries in the Street Fighter series as well as the several re-releases of them are a testament to this. I assume you’re joking, but in case you don’t; Battlefield 4 introduced nothing new at all, the Commander-mode was present in Battlefield 2 and 2142, the “new” faction (China) was also in Battlefield 2. That’s it! Ryse: Son of Rome was generally critisised for repetitive gameplay and for being linear… great innovation!

      2. That’s just what they tell to ignorant people who believe them. Sure they love to be innovative when they can, but when it comes down to it, they just want a game to sell and will pass anything off as innovation or will use the excuse “We can’t make a new game in this franchise because we have exhausted all our ideas and can’t come up with anything innovative.”

It’s used more as a promoting tool or an excuse vs. ACTUALLY being innovative.

Take the Gamepad as an example. Is it “innovative?” In video gaming sure, it kind of is, but in reality it isn’t. We have had consoles with two screens, this is just the first “home console” with screens, but they still pass it off as innovative and people believe them, because of that gray area that Nintendo uses a lot, they can do this kind of thing all the time.

Very few Nintendo products are TRULY innovative. I’d say the original Smash Bros was, the Wii (and Wii Sports), Pokemon, Animal Crossing, Super Mario 64, Mario Galaxy, the original Mario Kart and perhaps Double Dash as well when that first came out.

What Nintendo calls innovative, I’d typically call “creative.” Nintendo is more creative than inventive. They are probably the most artistically inclined gaming developer out there which is what makes them so unique and why they have so many fans.

        1. This is a good comment. The last really innovative thing that Nintendo did was probably with the Wii, making motion controls the main-focus as well as catering to non-gamers. Before that there was the analog-stick on the N64 that was the first real analog-stick on a video game console.

  2. I always hate that argument. “We’ll do it when have a new innovative idea surrounding it.” It’s always more of an excuse that limits a game’s potential rather than a good reason. It doesn’t have to be the crutch that holds up the game. It can just be a separate mode. 2 characters on one Kart is just a cool idea, and it has legs. You don’t need to change anything about it to use it again. Same reason we don’t have a new Fzero. And it’s a stupid reason.

    1. pink0crystal0midbus

Exactly. There is nothing wrong with making a sequel that uses the exact same ideas as the previous game. If the previous game was good then guess what? THE NEW ONE WILL BE GOOD TOO lol! “Not” being innovative doesn’t make a game bad, but people sure seem to act like it does.

      1. Funny thing is, that is why call of duty, assassins creed and all those yearly games exist and people talk so much shit about them because they offer nothing new, same shit different day.

        1. pink0crystal0midbus

Hey, I don’t mind that they do that. I understand where the companies are coming from. The games sell, and people love them. So why hate them? Because your jealous? That is the only reason.

          1. I like cod I have no problems with other yearly games and yeah that’s exactly it, people just hate on them when they haven’t even played the games themselves.

  3. i think they should add like a PIT feature in which we can change some car pieces mid game with the gamepad

    1. Or a pit feature that last place gets hurled into a pit and impaled by spikes!!! Ya, either one would be ok

  4. Very coincidental.
I woke up this morning and read a different article about Mario Kart 8.
And the first thing that came to my thought was “I wonder if this game will feature double racers like in Double Dash”.

To my surprise I get news about them considering it, lol.

  5. Coming around processing restrictions ?

    SIMPLE!!

If it’s 1080p then drop to 720p, if it’s already 720p then go the Killzone SF route and turn down the visual fidelity a bit.

Or go back to 8 players…

I’d take a game ingredient over visuals any day as long as it’s of an advantage.

    1. Nintendo Commander Quadraxis

It doens’t matter, if they didn’t have DD gameplay in mind from the beginning then it’s no point in adding it now…

I don’t like games with rushed features just because some would like it…

I’d rather they save it for next time and do it properly…

  6. i remember on a great thing that we made on a small event with mk duoble dash. there was a circle about 5m.
and arround 4 cubes and 8 screens & 8 players. all 60 seconds more or less we made a sound and thne every body has to change the gaming place.
it was so funny to watch.
    except some… accidents :-)

  7. Why are they worrying about processing power for a feature which is from a GameCube game. Surely dual racers would work almost flawlessly on wii u.

    1. they idea is great, but the wont make a double dash 2.
they wanna bring more than just that.
if they would bring just a double dash 2.
      everybody would say… so borring.
      double dash with bether graphics.
okay every mk is verry similar to each other. except DD. i hope mk8 feels fresh

  8. I would REALLY like to see unique special items return from Double Dash. Thinking about what character to use because of their special can add a layer of strategy and depth to the game I think. If they balance such unique attacks so that one is not extremely over-powered and another is not considerably under-powered, then really, why not add the feature?

  9. Pingback: GAYME ON!: "Mario Kart" Evolution - Lez Get Real | Lez Get Real

  10. Maybe make it with all the mk8 characters +more including pac-man with new courses like rosalina circuit!!!!!(and please do it for wii U:)okay)
