Nintendo has issued an apology regarding the sensitive topic of same-sex relationships in Tomodachi Life. Originally, Japanese users found a “glitch” in the system which enabled users to have same-sex marriages. However, this was misconstrued by gaming outlets as 3DS users in Japan were merely dressing their Miis in the opposite gender’s attire, and as such Nintendo patched the game-breaking bug.
With the whimsical life simulation game’s western release planned for June, the lack of same-sex relationships has caused an internet uproar over the past few weeks. A petition using the Miiquality slogan was sent to Nintendo earlier this week suggesting that they should include same-sex relationships within the game.
However, Nintendo declined the proposal and said it “never intended to make any form of social commentary with the launch of Tomodachi Life”. Now, Nintendo has apologised and given the following statement, promising to strive for a more inclusive title if a sequel is to be released.
“We apologize for disappointing many people by failing to include same-sex relationships in Tomodachi Life. Unfortunately, it is not possible for us to change this game’s design, and such a significant development change can’t be accomplished with a post-ship patch.
“At Nintendo, dedication has always meant going beyond the games to promote a sense of community, and to share a spirit of fun and joy. We are committed to advancing our longtime company values of fun and entertainment for everyone. We pledge that if we create a next installment in the Tomodachi series, we will strive to design a game-play experience from the ground up that is more inclusive, and better represents all players.”

I had a crush on Aladdin when I was a kid. I didn’t know it was a crush or what it meant, but I still had a crush on him. Me not identifying as gay then was just a reflection of what I was being shown. That straight is great and that liking someone of the same-sex wasn’t really being presented as an option. That’s not safe, though. If they don’t know about death, they’ll think they can touch a rattle snake or black widow, get bit by it, just suffer through some pain, & be perfectly fine afterwards. It’s kinda futile to project ones self and life into the Mii, because weird things can happen in the game the user want’s it to happen or not. Miis have thier own personality that may or may not reflect the user. Who your Mii marries or who your Mii’s friends are isn’t really your choice.
Even if the game had same-sex marriage, you yourself are not given the option to marry the same sex, it is your Mii’s choice.

The homosexual community in Japan is a example of integration, they don’t need parades or movements because they don’t think of themselves as a separate group, they partake of the exact same cultural behaviors as anyone else, most japanese homosexuals live exactly like heterosexuals do, they comply with dress and behavior codes and leave their personal lives in their home, instead of flaunting them while dressed in leather thongs or rainbow vests.
Whether this is good or bad is an entirely different monster, on one side they’re so homogenized that discrimination is almost nonexistent beyond youth, on the other side there is our western liberal bias that tells us they need to be recognized.

I think you’re missing the point here. It was a glitch that should not have existed. It just happens to be a glitch that coincides with the sensitive issue of equality that many in the LBGT community want. If the feature was deliberately put in the original schematic, and then removed, then those who are arguing about its lack of inclusion would have a case to prove. However, it wasn’t in the original schematic, which is why when it was exploited, Nintendo moved to patched it, and of course, the internet reaches critical mass with people who refuse to understand.
Those of us that wondered why they were complaining about a glitch couldn’t quite understand why, not because it wasn’t conforming to an equality. If the glitch was never found, none of this would have transpired. Meanwhile, the developers are looking like muppets because QC fucked up. Spare a thought for them, no?
The fact of the matter is, Nintendo did the right thing by not conforming to the complaint, and they also did the right thing by apologising (even though, in my opinion, they did not have to). If they release a follow-up which does allow for same-sex relationships, then that will be their decision. I expect them to do so. Sales figures will be representative of that.
In other words, were not getting another tomadachi life.

I find it deeply disturbing that a small minority of liberal extremists are allowed to dictate to the rest of the world as to what we are allowed to say and do, what we are allowed to put in video games and other forms of entertainment. I thought we lived in a free world where artistic freedom was celebrated, and where censorship was frowned upon. Yet here we have a classic example of liberals censoring Nintendo’s vision for their game series because it does not conform to their political views. Forcing them to make changes to a sequel if it ever gets made.
This movement was nothing more than a terror campaign against Nintendo, with lies spread about how Nintendo patched out gay relationships, and are discriminating against gay people. Even Peter Molyneux said Nintendo coded out the gay option in this game. It was lies posted on mainstream news channels in order to force Nintendo to comply with the liberal agenda. It’s disgusting and those involved should be ashamed and called out for their sinister campaigns against those who do not share their political views. liberal extremists do not want discussion, they don’t want equality, they don’t want you to have a opinion that differs from them. They want you to agree with them and if you don’t they want to silence you or destroy your reputation.
When someone on Neogaf asked about how Religious people might feel about having gay relationships in this game aimed at kids, one of the moderators replied, Fuck them. This sums them up perfectly. They do not care if your feelings are hurt, they don’t care about your beliefs, or if your rights are taken away in the process of them getting what they want. But they demand that you care about them.
The hysteria surrounding this game has made me sick to my stomach, it shows that we are in great danger of losing our freedoms to live and do as we want. And I hope it backfires on those who forced Nintendo to apologize. Nintendo did NOTHING WRONG, this game was finished in 2013, and was a niche title never intended to be released outside of Japan at the time, yet these liberals have branded them evil and anti gay.

I see what the issue is, but this my be TOO problematic for a family friendly company like Nintendo. Bioware can do it because they are targeted to mature audiences. Sure Disney’s doing it, but they are an older company with tons of money while Nintendo would lose it since their profit went down since the Wii U. I support same sex marriage, but it will be far too risky for Nintendo to do this in a Tomodachi sequel.
Nintendo is older than Disney, actually. Nintendo was founded in 1889 while Disney was founded in 1923. Oh & Nintendo has tons of money, too. Not as much as Disney but it’s enough.

This game is for everyone, so little kids play it too. It doesn’t matter if you try to explain it as “something something not choice, something something chemicals”; most people who’re at an age to be a parent don’t support gays, and it’d be a very bad marketing campaign for Nintendo. If this was the opposite I really really doubt gay people would lift a finger either, like they aren’t for much bigger discriminations that our found in our daily lives instead of whining about a game.
I think the lesson here is to not stereotype a group of people.
