Nintendo Says Wii U Won’t Get Twitch Streaming Because It’s Not Fun To Watch

With the success of Twitch as an application integrated on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One many would have hoped that an app would come to Wii U. Well according to Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime, this isn’t the case. Fils-Aime says that it’s just not fun watching thirty minutes of video game streaming.

“We don’t think streaming 30 minutes of gameplay by itself is a lot of fun,” Fils-Aime said in answer to my question about whether Twitch could come to the Wii U.”

“We’re looking to do a lot of great things with Twitch,” he said. “The Nintendo Treehouse Live at E3 that we’re executing through Twitch is doing fantastic numbers.”

“Your specific question of just purely streaming gameplay, what we’ve got to think through is, so what’s fun about that? From a consumer standpoint, what’s fun about it?”

“Kart is fun because its a highlight of the race,” he said. “You can make some choices as to what parts are going to be shared. We think that makes it interesting, and obviously the meme of the Luigi death stare is wonderful when that comes out of that type of experience. But in the end we’ve got to make sure that it’s fun.”

“So for us, what we’re doing at the Nokia theater with the Smash Invitational, we loved that streamed because that’s where you are able to see how these players perform, the moves they make, you can learn something,” he said. “That has value to us. And you can expect us to do more of that type of activity, highlighting our games and providing a forum for players to learn how to play better.”

“But that’s different than watching Joe Blow’s 30 minute stream, which may or may not have something that’s all that interesting.”

Thanks, MasterPikachu6

    1. Nintendo doesn’t get it. they are like your parents, telling you what’s good for you and what’s not, what you should do and what you should not, and over protecting you from any content that isn’t family friendly. come on nintendo, this is why your fans are getting annoyed!. stop treating us like kids!

      1. Yep. They, aka Iwata, just dont get it. Hope the board takes action and dismisses Iwata!

        1. Glad they’re not adding that retarded streaming feature. Seriously who the fuck likes to watch other people play? Are you really that much of a piece of shit? Is your life that worthless that you actually sit down and watch other people play video games? I honestly believe any human being that does that is a waste of an existence. Why don’t you go jack off cause honestly that’s probably spending your time more productively. I believe the reason people watch lets play videos or twitch streaming is because of molestation. Clearly only a child that was molested could grow up to do such vile things.

          1. I wouldn’t have known how to beat the Beady Long Legs in Tropical Forest (Mission Mode Level 1, Pikmin 3) without looking at a YouTube vids.

          2. ROFLMAO!

Best comment ever. I think someone should forward this to Nintendo so they get a better image

    2. LOL it is so sad that Nintendo treats it’s fanboys like 11 year old hahaja oh man this just made my day. Nintendo is like the wants to be hip father who just doesn’t get it and suggest fun activities that are simply lame and outdated. You know the balding man who wears right shorts they may as we’ll be daisy dukes with sandals and black dress socks. The guy who would rather eat a microwaves nukes steak from Denny’s and smells like ass. Yeah that guy.. The guy your mom won’t even give oral sex to on his birthday because he keeps producing Down Syndrome siblings for you. Fuck you Iwata and especially Reggie Fils-Aime die in a car crash.

    1. I feel the same. Every time they do something good, they so something bad to balance things.

Dammit Nintendo, Twitch and Let’s Play’s on Youtube are the same thing, it IS fun to watch, and that’s what gets us excited to get the game ourselves! I have watched gameplays of games I want so many times that I ended up dreaming about those titles many times! Watching gameplay videos DOES generate hype!

  1. Fuck you, Reggie. It’s not your choice to decide what I think is “fun” or not. Christ, THIS is why Nintendo has so much trouble with “dedicated gamers.” Always trying to control something.

    1. It’s their fuckin console and business you twat. They can add or withhold any features they want. Don’t like it? Move on jackass.

      1. I do what I fucking want. If I paid MY money for the system, unlike you most likely, then I’ll complain all day.

          1. Awww, is that the best you can do? Call someone names because you’re still in 6th grade? It’s cool; (Did you see that?! A semi-colon! You’ll learn it in 8th. :) I have better things to do than argue with kids. Bye!

    2. Yes, because ignoring your customers is always a good thing. There’s a reason Sony and MS integrated it: their customers demanded it. Nintendo’s customer’s are demanding it as well, and if Nintendo doesn’t wake up or stop doing stupid stuff, then Nintendo is going the way of RIM.

  2. You hosted your own two hour tournament, filled to the brim with people just watching a game. How do you not get this?

  3. Reggie strikes again. He had such good momentum for E3 as well, but his reasons for not having twitch are terrible. It’s a very popular platform, and Nintendo should recognize that fact. If anything, they can benefit.

    1. but they are benefiting from it.
They just dont feel like they have a reason to enable it for the consumer to dick around with and put out lame content

      1. This is the one big problem I have with Reggie, whom I normally love – it seems that if there is a decision made by Nintendo saying that they won’t do a thing (i.e. streaming on Twitch), instead of putting off the question or answering honestly about capability, he’d rather knock it (“it’s not fun”). Clearly plenty of people think it’s fun, Reggie. Why would you say that and potentially alienate a whole audience?

A small misstep in an amazing E3, but that still irks me.
But he didn’t say that. He said “We don’t think streaming 30 minutes of gameplay by itself is a lot of fun.” That’s a huge difference. And I think most people will agree. Without commentary, tournament status, or player input, twitch watching isn’t that interesting. He said that they were looking for a way to make it fun, so I’ll wait before jumping off the handle.

        1. Thats kind of where I am at, in Nintendo’s reaction of Twitch. I get some of his points (being someone who lacks time), but I do agree its somewhat a misstep in an E3 where they did most things right. Hopefully they keep thinking of ways to get into consumers hands, in a good way.

      2. Twist Nintendo’s words? How is “30 minutes of gameplay isn’t fun” different from “gameplay isn’t fun”? They’re the same damn thing! If they say “we don’t want this because of this” it’s still “we don’t want this”.

      1. OK, I’ll sit here and “whine, while you allow Nintendo to hand-hold you through life, Nintendrone.

      2. You can stream gameplay from the Wii U to YouTube? Tell us how! Oh, wait….. We can’t. There are no streaming options on the Wii U.

  4. Yep, don’t really care. Streamers who are actually entertaining have the gear to stream the Wii U without an app on the Wii U. This does a good job of cutting out the rubbish.

    1. Cutting out *some of the rubbish.

Of course there are still many awful streamers who have the setup, but most don’t go through the effort.

    1. Did you not read the quote? He commented on twitch being useful for streaming content like they did at E3. But that Joe Blow streaming 30 mins of random gameplay isn’t interesting, and he’s 100% right.

      1. Which is your opinion! I hate how people state their opinions (“oh he’s right”) and have the guts to think that every other person on Earth shares the same opinion.

  5. Lets be honest. A stream without at least a voice over commentator is useless. (I am not even talking about face cam).

If someone wants to steam, they will get their setup in order to do so, like many popular console game streamers.

    1. Correct. There are little to zero popular streamers using the integrating streaming tech in Xbone and PS4. The hysteria here is ridiculous. It’s perfectly possible to stream using a Wii U, and many people do and are doing so right now as I type this message. Where is the problem?

    1. only during live, plus we can skip ads on twitch, if we want to watch old streams, we gotta watch them some where else, and my laptom is next to me

  6. After such a strong E3 this happens.

They’re always behind/detached in certain areas, When online was taking off they said no one wanted to play games online, when the other two consoles went HD they thought not enough people would buy HD TV’s and made the Wii standard def.- it’s always something. I guess that perfect world where Nintendo gives core gamers the latest hardware and functionality alongside their AMAZINGLY refreshing innovation and stellar IP’s is also a dream world…

          Halo collection???

Don’t even get me started on captain toad’s adventures!

Spark holding Conker? “10 years without a new game, guess I’ll have to make my own”???

          1. Well I was actually enthralled by the entire thing, but I really do agree with everything you said.

  7. If people want to stream, just keep using capture cards. For now, I’m fine with using the Wii U browser to watch Twitch streams.

  8. I fucking assure you Reggie, the last thing I want to do when I want to play Mario Kart Online is watching an entirely race that waste my time, and that is something the battery of my gamepad doesn’t have in abundance.

  9. They should include it and let us decide! While it’s not for me it’s obviously important to some fans!

  10. There might be a few people out there whose streams are actually engaging and interesting to watch, but seriously, there’s a lot of crappy boring streams as well. There’s no reason to bring a feature to a system just because it CAN be done or other people are doing it. Nintendo’s success comes from investing time and development into ideas NOBODY else is doing.

  11. That’s odd seeing Nintendo used twitch for many of their E3 videos. Oh well, can always watch them on YouTube or just play them. :3

    1. Weird.. I bought MK8 because of gameplay vids. Gameplay vids have been helpful in deciding what games to buy and what games to not….

Also, I found how to beat the Beady Long Legs in the first Mission Mode level in Pikmin 3 via a YT vid.

  12. Judging from yesterday, Twitch SUCKS! The videos wouldn’t even play on my Wii U. I had nothing but problems watching videos throughout E3. Even YouTube was acting up on me for some reason.

    1. Yeah, I Had The Same Issue With A 30MBPS Internet Speed, Kinda Forced Me To Order The Network Adapter For Video Watching On Eshop/Browser.

  13. Who wants to watch some random noob playing a game? Watching a noob playing is one of the most boring things ever. Good shit Reggie.

  14. Of course the real reason is that Nintendo doesn’t want people to watch streams instead of buying the game…..double DUHHH!!!

    1. Weird… I bought several games BECAUSE of gameplay vids. I also avoided some almost horrible mistakes because of vids too.

Gameplay is different than other media such as movies, music, shows, etc. You could watch a movie on YouTube once, and never buy it. However, you could watch a game video and find out if you want to buy it. I did that with LittleBigPlanet Karting. I watched people creating their own levels to see how easy it was and made my decision…..

  15. If it’s just gameplay, no commentary, it’s boring. However, I would appreciate seeing people be able to stream if they can commentate it

  16. Aww c’mon Nintendo! Get with the program here. You guys did so well at E3 and then you have to make this move. Can’t win them all right? In other news I played Super Smash Bros. at the Smash Fest at Best Buy. It was amazing!!! Little Mac is a beast.

      1. Once again ” of gameplay isn’t fun” is the same thing as “gameplay isn’t fun”.

  17. who cares, youtube works far better im watch nintendos e3 stream on the nintendo youtube channel live on my wii u.

  18. Who cares- streams sucks. The only reason to watch a stream is to help decide on whether or not to buy a game (something you can do on Youtube or on Twitch via the web browser.) How many of us will actually use the app if Nintendo releases it? I doubt Nintendo wants to put time in an app used by only a 1000 people out of millions.

  19. Reggie, I’m disappointed by this decision but I then wonder, do I ever live stream my games on my PlayStation 4? Not really as much.

It’s a useless feature to me but many others would love it.

  21. It’s the option of choice and convienence. I highly doubt all PS4 and XBOne users are streaming whenever they play, but we have the choice to do so when we want to without wiring out own setup to stream.

And just like Let’s Plays, streams are free advertising for games.

  22. Horrible reasoning. It’s an insult to all Nintendo gamers the fact that he thinks he can tell you wts fun and wts not

  23. They are right…. How many times do you go on Twitch to watch a random person play on their PS4 or X1. Anyone that is streaming use professional equipment which is way better than anything the consoles have to offer.

  24. honestly its not the game that makes me watch peoples twitch, its the players personalities. the person is more interesting then the game

  25. This doesn’t seem to be against streaming but more against boring streams.

So they seem to want to be able to curate streams to have a collection of streams that promote their games well and are fun to watch. This could end up Getting tied to their new policy with content creators. My guess is that they’d want to push for interesting personalities to stream games and not just have people essentially play a video of game play.

So they might try to make their own stream service or cooperate with an existing one to retain some form of control of the content.

  26. HAHAHAH! Look at Babytendo telling the precious little babies what is fun and what is not lololol.
This is like Babytendo saying that watching 30 minutes of their own games is boring LOLOLOLOL! I AGREE! HAHAHAHA!

  27. if you want livestreaming so much watch it on the computer. or stream it yourself! jesus adding stuff like that uses up alot of hardware power! i can agree that they need a messaging service on the wii u to talk to your friends instantly but this ? no thank you! there are allready people streaming nintendo games. why not actually get off your ass and walk over to the computer and check there instead! are you actually that lazy ? sorry if i sound really harsh here now but consoles are for gaming ( and friends talking to eachother!) that’s about it and any added unneeded crap is only hindering your gameplay!is your console a pc or a console?

  28. Thanks for deleting my comment sickr. In the future watch how you use quotation marks as they are still wrongly used. Your grammar sucks. Get real bro.

  29. I couldn’t care less, never watch other people play, though I’m not opposed to watching someone play. This decision doesn’t bother me.

  30. This isn’t a huge loss to the Wii U, but it’s silly for Reggie to say that when Twitch has become so immensely popular due to the FACT that many people do find watching others play to be fun. Come on, man.

  31. I’ll say this, I don’t necessarily WATCH twitch streams, I listen to them… And Reggie didn’t say, “Urr… Twitch sucks” or “Watching full-fledged gaming streams on twitch isn’t fun!” No… He said that streaming 30 minutes of twitch (just streaming, no commentary or interaction) by itself is not fun… Wow, I wish you people would read the post and not just look at the title and hate about it in the comments… (It’s also Sickr’s fault with the title… Click bait…)

    1. “I don’t like this because of that” is the same thing as “I don’t like this”.

  32. Nintendo Commander is a damage control piece of shit. All spam and get NNID N-Commander banned.

  33. I play video games to immerse myself in stories and worlds, and have split-screen fun with family/friends. I do not play video games to watch strangers play video games from my console over the internet.

I think he’s absolutely right, and I’m perfectly happy simply sharing a few hilarious instantaneous screenshots over Miiverse once in a while.

Why in the world would someone record 30 minutes of gameplay just to upload it for viewing? I guess for the same reason that someone would watch it.

  34. The community on this site are the biggest bunch of whiny little bitches on the internet.

    1. I agree! This is all a waste of time to begin with, sure the feature is not built into the console, but you can still stream WiiU games on Twitch. If someone with the right tools took the time to make a stream and runs it well, then I’m sure they’re engaging enough to make it a fun and enjoyable experience.

  35. lol! i’m sorry, i have to laugh here! why do you guys even try to make people who like nintendo mad ? you got nothing better to do ? life is not fun anymore other than to try and take everything out of context and trying to find every tiny fault with the games and the console ? is this what you guys want to be ? i have been seeing everyone’s comments for some months now and i really did not want to get the stress of dealing with trolls but now it’s just sad! i for one am going to talk about the games that is coming out! get your guns ready tho i don’t think they will work anymore becuase im going to stop caring riiiight about!!! NOW! so guys have you got any theories about what’s coming to zelda u ? like side quests and or hopes ? and to the point of this news i really don’t think streaming service is good for the wii u. some might disagree but why would you want it on your console if you can easily watch it on your computer? i mean it would waste power on the nintendo consoles ( future ones) why not dedicate the whole system to only games ? like it is supposed to ? i can agree voice chat and text chat should be in there but anything else is just … meh! i mean netflix is awesome too but that’s about it in what i need for the wii u. the games. the chat and the netflix ( if i want to eat breakfast watching some good ol dr who away from your tv ” on the kitchen table”.) also i’m really exited for splatoon coming out. it’s a nice break from all the warfare games ( hint cod hint battlefield) don’t get me wrong they are a nice distraction once in a while but there are too many games coming out too fast! i was allways stressed and pissed when playing those games alot with my friend ( his idea to play it) i’m not saying i only play nintendo games or use the consoles. tho i have decided to wait to see how the ps4 turns out. purchased the wii u december 2013. did some research and wii u was the best option and still is! but enough about me. i would like to hear all your thoughts about them games ;) you think there will be something like fi or navi in it ? they should bring in a less annoying fairy this time tho i think i miss navi alittle bit! hey.. hey listen!

sorry for the long post and thank you for reading if you took the time!

  36. All I can say is, while I’m not exactly happy about Nintendo not really acknowledging Twitch as a fun thing, I don’t really care about this decision.

This is what I care about right now. I look through these comments and see things like “NINTENDO DOESN’T GET IT! NINTENDO IS DOOMED! FIRE IWATA! FIRE REGGIE! WII U SUCKS! SPAM NINTENDO’S TWITTER WITH TWITCH REQUESTS!!”
Guys, what the hell. Twitch isn’t all that important to a console, and you can’t really stream things from Wii U, because it doesn’t have the share feature that PS4 has. I suppose it’s possible for them to add that feature, but think of how busy the development teams are with all the stuff they announced this year. I’m guessing they won’t be able to do something like this. Besides, it’s not like you can’t watch Twitch from your PC or mobile device. And I don’t think it should affect your decision as to whether or not purchase a Wii U, because it’s unimportant to a console. It’s just a gimmick.

    1. Tell that to RIM. (Research In Motion) Entering the smartphone market too late and failing miserably.

Nintendo’s business of “always being a generation behind” is what is killing Nintendo in the long run. This is another reason why core Nintendo fans dumped Nintendo like a hot potato.

  37. Reggie deserves a medal for not allowing Twatch on our systems. 1/2 an hour playing MK8 or watching a 1/2 hour video of it. If you think the latter, go and play with yourself or a PS4 (yourself is more fun than a PS4).

  38. Wow nintendo should have just said the Wii U isn’t capable of running twitch or something, I love twitch, I love watching it I love streaming I just love it in general. Nintendo honestly have no idea what the fans want.

  39. ‘the fans’ wtf ?! .. they sell a concept .. we choose to buy in to it .. or go elsewhere. I choose to play a game completely different to reality for half an hour. Jeez .. its not a hard choice. You honestly have too much spare time in the first place if you care deeply about this.

  40. Hi! I know this is sort of off-topic however I had to ask. Does building a well-established blog like yours take a massive
amount work? I am brand new to writing a blog but I do
write in my diary daily. I’d like to start a blog so I will
be able to share my own experience and views online.
Please let me know if you have any suggestions or tips for new aspiring bloggers.

  41. “But that’s different than watching Joe Blow’s 30 minute stream, which may or may not have something that’s all that interesting.”

Reggie Fils-Aime can eat an entire bag of dicks.

  42. We stumbled over here by a different page and thought I should check things out.
I like what I see so i am just following you. Look forward to checking out your web page again.

  43. Thanks for the article. Just want to inform all folks who live outside US that Nintendo Wii is a great media Player. If you want to access Netflix and other streaming stations on your Nintendo Wii you can use UnoTelly as I do to get around the geo block.
