Aonuma Says Zelda Wii U Will Offer Gamers A Lot More Freedom Than Previous Games

The Legend of Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma has stressed that the recently unveiled Zelda title for Wii U will offer gamers an unprecedented amount of freedom compared with previous games in the critically acclaimed series. Here’s what Aonuma had to say.

“The impact of the player character on the environment that has been, and really, having the player experience the impact, is something that is consistent through all versions of the Zelda games, but I want to continue to have players experience that and even build upon that experience. In traditional Zelda games there is kind of an order in which you do things. You can’t do 3 until you do 1 and 2 for example. But with the new Zelda game, I really want to open the opportunities up for the players to really make an impact on their environment and to give them a little more freedom to choose their path the story takes.”

  1. @Eiji Aounuma KEEP TALKING!!! KEEP SAYING STUFF! =D

at least once a week until e3 2015………then 5once a day until its release and
    …..

    …Power of social media LMAOO.
    ….hmm…….actually that’s a great idea!

      1. Yeah, same here. Sometimes I feel as if I’ve already owned and played a game when it’s released because of seeing so much coverage and articles during the game’s production. That’s how it felt with Smash Bros. Brawl, Zelda: Skyward Sword and many others. I think games would be MUCH more exciting if hardly nothing was known until it released. Then when you play them, you’d be shocked, excited and blown away all through the game. That’s the way it was for me as a kid. I knew hardly nothing about most games until I owned them (aside from when I read about them in Nintendo Power etc.).

      1. I feel little sad for this retard.
Maybe if her mother didn’t make fun of those down syndrome kids, he might had have a chance for a normal life, karma’s a bitch.

      2. that inhuman will never learn, he likes to attack people but wants to be treated like a god…clearly sasori is a dumb

      3. hahaha. looks like he’s going to cry at the end. that girl hater needs a psychiatrist. the good part is that at least he won’t return to this website.

  2. This might be a harder to debug game, having players whatever they want in the order they want. These kind of features sometimes break game files whenever all the progress states are not fully tested.

    1. And sometimes these kind of things create exploitables that only make the game more fun, like Super Metroid.

    1. And that’s exactly why we probably won’t hear anything more on Zelda Wii U anytime soon, at least not until the release of Hyrule Warriors. No sense in hyping one game, when they still have another game to sell, and they need to sell people on Hyrule Warriors.

  3. If a troll like saso comment, JUST FUCKING IGNORE THEM LIKE NOTHING HAPPENED. WHY DO MOST PEOPLE RESPOND?

      1. The more fractured it is, the more fun theorists get to have though. ;P

But yeah, I’m not sure multiple endings would be a good idea. The Oracle games might’ve technically had multiple endings, but there was still an actual true ending. So if there are multiple endings, there definitely needs to be a clear true ending and no matter what happens each different variation of the endings- especially the true ending -should be able to be accessible without having to replay or have multiple save files for each version.

        1. A Zelda with time travel that slowly pieces together the true ending depending on what you do could work quite well, I don’t know how it could be implemented well, but gradually finding out what happens to everything could work quite well, it would certainly increase the length of the game (if done incorrectly it could be received by harsh criticism though).

      2. Ending 1: you die…
Ending 2: you give up near the end…
Ending 3: you beat the final boss…
Ending 4: you beat the final boss with 100% and fight the final final boss…

Then again, that might be too similar to Cave Story…

        1. 1. You suck at the game.
          2. You drop your controller and place the game in to deepest corner of your closet.
          3. duh?
          4. meh?

I hope the story isn’t crippled just so we have an open world. ALBW was great but the story sucked. I want something along the lines of Skyward Sword. That had character development and told a legitimate story, sometimes without words at all.
I don’t want a rehash of Skyward Sword’s story; I want an evolution of its story.

    1. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

Maybe this will be a sequel of sorts to Skyward Sword. It’s the best place to have an open world, after all, what with Hyrule not existing yet so imagine the ruins & small colonies scattered about.

  5. he shouldn’t hype it so much like ss was. it ended up being disliked by majority of zelda fans. don’t give away too much and don’t make it sound like it’s going to be the best in the franchise.

        1. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

I say that about Skyward Sword since in my opinion it was the best Zelda so far. I wasn’t bothered by the linearity of the game, to be honest.

          1. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

In fact, I’d say it’s a plus side since they could save the rest of the land that will become Hyrule for this open world Legend of Zelda.

            1. I think SS has the weirdest Link and Zelda models though. Imo. Maybe it’s just me. Link looks too much like a girl and Zelda looks like a teenage girl. Maybe it’s just me. I prefer the Link and Zelda from TP.:|

              1. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

Actually, that’s because they are teenagers in Skyward Sword. >.< If Link & Zelda aren't children in a Zelda game, they are teenagers. Link has yet to be out of his teens in the franchise. It is medieval times, after all, so it wasn't unusual to come across a 16, 15, or even 14 year old on a battlefield. I loved their designs in Skyward Sword because their realistic appearances in Twilight Princess were way too bland colored for my liking. I hope we see the Goddess Dress in a future game. I'd love nothing more than to get that as an alternate costume for Zelda in Hyrule Warriors AND SSB4.

    1. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

By the majority of Zelda fans? Are you CERTAIN of that? A very vocal & loud minority on the internet is still just a minority.

  6. With a world this open, I hope that they play-test the shit out of this game so it doesn’t become glitched up the wazoo like Skyrim.

  7. Well, I kind of assumed that this game would have more freedom since the whole point is that it’s Open World and all………………………………………………………………………………………………………………I think it’s going to be the third best game in the series personally. Behind Wind Waker and Twilight Princess; although Ocarina of Time should give it some competition.

I may not sound like it, but I am hyped for this game and really looking forward to it. I’m always up for a new LoZ game and I was one of the few who actually enjoyed Skyward Sword a lot. The opening may have been slow, but I really didn’t mind since it was fun to explore the village and check out the sites. Seriously; it was just exciting after opening the game for the first time and admiring the island! This one will definitely live up to the reputation

  8. This Zelda is definitely sounding & looking like the best yet. But…will there be fishing? It was a fun, albeit small diversion in Link’s Awakening (my first Zelda & Nintendo game). It was nice in OoT & wonderful in TT. Seeing as how Zelda U is more lush & open, I really hope to find a nice pond, hop in a boat, & relax after a long day of questing.

  9. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

Please let this be a direct sequel to Skyward Sword. I’d love to be able to stumble upon the areas from Skyward Sword while exploring the land that will become Hyrule. So much possibly unexplored land, too.

  10. When I played Assassin’s Creed IV, I kept thinking to myself “man, it would be so cool if Zelda games had large worlds like tis game”. So I love the sound of this.
