Chikao Otsuka Who Was The Japanese Voice Of Dr Eggman Has Passed Away At 85

We’ve some sad Sonic news today as Chikao Otsuka who did the voice acting for the Japanese version of Dr Eggman has passed away at the age of 85. Chikao Otsuka took on the role of Dr Eggman back in 1998 for the original Sonic Adventure on the Sega Dreamcast, which has a place in fans hearts. Otsuka is the third voice actor to play Dr Eggman to pass away. My thoughts go out to his friends and family.

Thanks, Portal Dark

  1. All systems, full power! Argh, he’s not gonna get away with this!
Get a load of get a load of get a load of get a load of this!
    And RIP my friend.

Of course as this guy did the Japanese voice acting rather than the English it wasn’t him who said this, but I’m sure it was similar in Japanese!

  2. “Oh no! My power is going down!”
    “Yosh….”
But, yeah, my brother and I have always joked around with and enjoyed Sonic Adventure 2’s voice acting. Robotnik was weirdly written and hilarious as a result. I feel that there’s some Japanese teens/adults that might have had a similar attacthment to the game and it’s characters. If some kid living out in the desert can enjoy SA2B’s voice acting (albeit in an slightly ironic way), I can imagine there’s a few more frowns today than there was yesturday, over in Japan.

  3. Sonic Adventure on the Dreamcast was the first game I ever played. As I’d occasionally play with the Japanese audio, I remember his voice. And just a few days ago I beat Birth By Sleep, a game in which he voiced Xehanort, another amazing role of his.
    Rest in peace.

  4. I believe he is the father of Akio Otsuka, known for the roles of Snake from Metal Gear, Shunsui Kyoraku from Bleach, and many others. The elder Otsuka also played the old Big Boss in MGS4, playing opposite his son. Rest in peace.

  5. Man, I liked his voice as Eggman… this hits me hard. May he rest in peace. We will never forget you, my friend *sniff*
