Dan Adelman Believes Third Party Developers Skip Nintendo Platforms As They Don’t Think They Can Compete

Nintendo’s former head of indies Dan Adelman believes that third party developers skip Nintendo platforms as they don’t think they can compete against the first party titles that are available. You’d think it was more likely due to the fact that Nintendo implements gimmicks in their platforms that large third developers aren’t interested in taking advantage of. Lack of sales on Nintendo platforms doesn’t seem to help either. Here’s what Adelman believes.

“It really comes down to the business case for these publishers. Nintendo consumers buy Nintendo systems primarily for the first party content. There’s a bit of a self-fulfilling prophesy in that publishers feel that they can’t compete with Nintendo first party, so they choose not to invest in making high quality products for the platform. There are some notable exceptions to this over the years like Rayman Legends but many times third party publishers set low sales projections for their games, and then decide a development budget based on that. I can’t say outright that they’re wrong either.”

“There have been cases where companies decided to pull out the stops and make a great game for Nintendo platforms only to find that consumers weren’t interested. And it could be because consumers have been burnt by third party games on Nintendo platforms before.”

“For Nintendo to break this cycle, I think they need to invest and absorb some of the risk for third parties who try to embrace the features of Nintendo platforms and help communicate to consumers which games are on par with Nintendo first party games in terms of quality. Sony and Microsoft spend a lot of money securing exclusives – or at least exclusive features – on the top games and since Nintendo doesn’t really do that, third parties focus on the other systems. I’m not sure about Sony, but I know Microsoft also has a team of technical people that will go work with a studio for a few weeks or even months to help them make their games as good as they can be on those platforms.”

    1. Nintendo fans buy Nintendo consoles for Nintendo games

How to compete with such a logic? People don’t even look at a game unless there’s Mario or Link on it, and then you have to make stuff like Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition

    2. yep. Not just makes sense, but it is possibly the main reason why third parties are not interested in developing for the WiiU: low sales expectations that don´t compensate for the job of converting games for it.
We must notice that this is a specific matter of the WiiU. The 3ds doesn´t have this problem. Third parties companies are always making games for it, specially Japanese developers. The Wii also didn´t have this problem – it wasn´t getting some games but many companies developed games specifically for it

    1. And yet, they still make games for 360 which runs the same fucking architecture as Wii U’s (Power PC) so what’s their fucking excuse when they can just copy/paste the code, slightly change it and polish the game a bit more? Takes no more than the same amount of time they make games running X86 on other platforms with the same amount of job.

        1. No its because they either don’t advertise it as they should, delay a game for months when its already completed for an open window release away from Nintendo launches (Watchdogs and Rayman are prime examples) or they make a peep about gimping it somewhere and completely turn off the potential fan purchase on the spot. Watchdogs, 2 COD, Sniper Elite which stripped 85% of the game features for full price (are they fucking insane?!), Batman Arkham Origins, Lego Batman 3, Assassin’s Creed, Rayman do I need to say more and again?

          1. You don’t understand game development. You can’t just “copy and paste” on to wii u. You still have to put time and resources into the port. It also doesn’t help that wii u’s cpu is inferior to the 360’s(it’s still stronger, just lacks on the CPUs side.) So some optimization is required. Then it doesn’t sell well, makingit a waste.

            1. The use of the program to emulate, not, But the use of the program to emulate ROMs of game that you do not have the license to use? Yes.

            2. To elaborate, I play Wii games on the Dolphin emulator so that I can play them in 1080p with an xbox controller (instead using the gimmicky waggle controls). I own physical copies of all the games I emulate. Nothing illegal about it. Perhaps you should try Metroid or Xenoblade or Mario Galaxy on Dolphin to see what your missing out on.

              1. As I state, you do not have the license? It is Illegal. You do have the game, therefore, you do have the license? Go ahead, you can use a emulate tool to play the game.

        1. Lol. Wii u emulation.

Pc fags are lying sacks of shit. It barely can emulate GameCube games. Glitches, crashes, sound issues and you only need w 2 grand rig for that piss poor emulation

          1. Exactly. all because they want better graphics and play with a fucking Xbox 360 controller which must be the worst fucking controller ever made. It’s sickening. I hope they get caught and go to jail.

          2. Wow this is sad. Pc will always be more powerful and more durable than consoles. I payed $350 for a laptop and it blows the wii u and its graphics out of the water. And it can more than easily run a fucking game cube emulator.

            1. Oh you lousy emu losers, who worship the mighty graphic whore. You guys will never understand what makes Nintendo Nintendo, because you take the cheap, sneaky asshole routine to get the game that you call baby games.

Do us all a favor and stick with COD, GTA and all the other GRAPHIC bullshit while we play Nintendo games on a Nintendo console and support the companie for their awesome job.

But slimy wannabees like you will never understand the magic of Nintendo, since all that counts for you is GRAPHIC and POWER!!

              1. You do realize there’s more to PC than COD, GTA, and graphics. While my pc can run more graphically intense games, I much prefer artstyle over graphics. My steam libary consists mostly of platformers, rpgs, and action games. I especially like action rpg games like the Ys series and while the Ys series looks great, it’s not a super realistic fps game “looks great”, but instead a retro feeling sprite based great artstyle “looks great”. I generally play the same kind of games I play on console, which again are not usually FPS games, and when they are, they’re rpg or story based. While Metroid Prime is not really an fps (it’s closer to a first person adventure game), that’s generally the kind of thing I look for in a first person game, exploration, story, and rpg elements if they are there. The games that don’t match my tastes on there, are games that my step-brother plays.

    1. No games interest me on PC. Except visual novels and little indie games. lol That’s as much as my PC can handle anyway without sacrificing the graphics. Not everyone cares or are even interested in keeping a gaming PC in shape. It’s MUCH easier and cheaper to just have a gaming console for 5–6 years and then upgrade to the next one being sure your games will work on the thing under the entire life cycle.

      1. Very true. That’s why I try to stray from PC games/MMOs because mataining a good pc costs so much more than a handheld and home console combined. Graphics are pretty and there’s a lot of gaming options, but I find Nintendo’s library much more appealing.

      2. Not really. I’ve been a console gamer since I first got a snes. And while I still get consoles and handhelds, I game mainly on PC because on console, the thing that always bugged me is that when you buy a console and game, they don’t last forever. My first Playstation only worked for about a month, my second 2 months, and my third lasted much longer, but eventually it too died. The first two were the grey models, and the second one was the small white one and that lasted several years. But like I said, it eventually died. Luckily my ps2 had me covered there. When I got a ps2, it was the slim one and it lasted about half a year later. These things were only played about an hour or two a day. My second one was an older fat model and it still works, but the laser is old and so it has trouble on all but the cleanest and scratch-less discs. I do have a ps3, and it still works fine, but the hdd in it failed about a year ago and so I had to replace it. Then a couple of months ago it decided to corrupt the new one and had to quick format the drive costing me all of my saves. My first gamecube lasted 3 years, which wasn’t bad and the one I replaced it with supposedly still works, but I haven’t used it since I got a wii. Speaking of the wii, the drive is starting to fail and so it too has trouble on even some newer discs. Nintendo said the repairs would cost 80$ to fix and I would have to pay shipping as well to there and back which would be at least another 30$. Okay to add up the costs. the first two Playstations cost me 50, and the smaller one cost 60. so 160. The slim ps2 cost me 200 and the fat cost me 100. So 300. My gamecube was another 200, and the second one was at a pawn shop which cost 40. And finally the wii cost me 150 and if I sent it in for repair altogether I’d be looking at 260 or more. My ps3 with taxes was over $400. And since I also have a 360, it would have cost me 350 plus taxes, but because it was given to me I won’t count it. But wait there’s more. While I still have a n64 and snes, over the years I’ve spent around 100 on accessories and controllers. I still have games that don’t work on the wii or wii u. Speaking of older games, because of the way the wii and wii u wii mode handle retro games, they end up taking up much more space than they should. The wii and wii u wii mode have very little space to keep said games. You can move those games to an sd card, but the wii has to actually have enough space on the wii’s flash memory to run the game, because it temporarily writes it to the flash memory to run it. This will degrade the flash memory eventually. In other words, those are not really a reliable replacement for the older console. Unfortunately they too will die eventually, though I expect them to last longer than my disc based systems. Another issue is that you need to rebuy. Rebuy is a big word when it comes to consoles. Every gen comes remasters and ports that don’t really change much. If you didn’t get it the first time around it may be a good deal, but if you have it already, there usually isn’t enough to warrant a second purchase. Unfortunately with consoles being designed largely to last a few years and then die, compounded with the lack of backwards compatibility a lot of times, you end up spending 2 or three times what you should to keep playing that game. And on console the prices aren’t really that great unless you buy used. And the game being disc based means that when the disc gets scratched or cracked, or whatever, then the game needs to be rebought. In my ps2 days, there was always an issue with the disc drive that caused it to scratch the disc. I’ve had to throw out about $100 and rebuy games that got too scratched for even disc repair because they had to frequently be repaired due to the system giving them circular scratches. Either vertical or horizontal, it made no difference, the disc would be damaged and eventually need to be replaced.

I eventually got so fed up I switched to PC. Since building my pc I’ve spent a fraction of the cost of games. While the price of the pc was a bit more than the price of a console, I NEED a PC anyway, and so besides being used for games, I use it for pretty much anything else. It plays games from this current generation and back. In just a couple of years, I built up a steam library of over 230 games (239 at the time of posting) and the funny thing is that I have games from other online stores as well. When I buy a game I don’t have to worry about the disc being scratched or cracked. I don’t have to worry about my disc player not playing it or scratching the disc.

While years ago console gaming was a bit cheaper than pc gaming, over the years that has ceased to be as games on pc regularly cost me about a third or fourth of what they cost on console. Opportunities for deals are much more plentiful than on console. My steam calculator says * *Worth:* $3307 ($846 with sales) * *Games owned:* 239. In other words, since I rarely buy games not on sale then I’ve saved around 2000 on games from steam alone. I spent around 500 last generation on console games (not counting the console itself) and have around 20 games for my wii/ps3/360. I’ve spent around 1000 and got a dozen times that. If I half the value to 500, then 500 dollars for 120 games seems like a steal to me. And yet, when I buy games on steam or other stores, developers DO get money from me. In comparison to get any deal, it’s pretty much used where you have to turn. If I buy a game used, the dev doesn’t see a cent from me. Instead, I’ve paid some store for it or I’ve paid somebody else halfway across the nation.

And while the startup costs are bit higher for a pc, maintenance is much cheaper than you give it credit for. This year I plan on upgrading my gpu to a gtx 970. It costs about $300 but if I get it, I’ll be good for another 5 or 6 years as it more than blows the PS4 apu out of the water. The PS4, while it looks nice is equivalent to an entry level pc. It’s not the most powerful card, but it has the most bang for buck and is much more powerful than the apu of the ps4 or xbone.

I do get console games, but for me, I buy a console game if it is exclusive to either that console or to consoles period. And so far, there’s been few games that have interested me that haven’t made it to pc besides Nintendo games, which I am good for as I have a 3ds and wii u. But I have to admit my wallet especially cries out when Nintendo is involved because games that came out at launch still cost around $30. That $30 could get me a few good games on steam.

    2. Switch Wii U for PS4 or XBone, and you’ll have a point, because most of their good games are also on PC as well.
But most of the Wii U’s games, aren’t on PC, and never will be.

  1. Nintendo Elite Commander Quadraxis

The traitor is still butthurt over losing his job that he must continue trashing the empire…

Have fun in the no fun zones Adelman…

        1. sherlockwillfightbilbo

There are so many factors involved than just competing with Smash. No one was going to buy the game because it released months prior for the other consoles, was a version that wasn’t graphically comparative to the PS4 or XB1 version, and yeah, it released at the same time as Smash 4.

Likewise, there are many reasons why third-parties strayed from the Wii U and this is one of them, but not the only or even the main reason.

    1. He is’nt exactly trashing them…if anything he’s praising how good their games are, it’s more of an analysis on why 3rd party devs don’t aproach the console, I partly agree with him, alot of the lack of effort is down to a self fullfilling prophecy these publishers have, though sometimes even when you get a low budget game like zombiu that sells relatively well, the publisher is still not satisfied because it did’nt sell gangbusters on a console they clearly were’nt expecting too much from.

I think it’s partly just due to the industry nowadays, their shovelin so much(alot of the time uneeded) money into games that the slightest fuck up will cost them tons of money, so we have less and less publishers taking anything that could be considered a risk and instead either rushing out ports in the hopes they’ll catch on(and complain if they don’t, which they should’nt their shit ports), or denouncing the console even when the game is a moderate success(like zombiu) because they feel they can’t make a franchise out of it.

    2. If it were Michael Patcher who lost his job (still praying it’ll happen) and talks dhit here, I would agree. But this guy makes sense.

3rd parties have always envy Nintendo for years and have the confused sensation of either ruining them until their small skulls realized it was a huge mistake when far too late or using them for quick cash schemes from parents who are usually on that system for gheir kids.

    1. Yeah, they are basically saying Nintendo’s games are too good to even compare with their mediocre shovelware. lol It’s so stupid.

  2. I’m convinced that if third parties were to put good games on Nintendo consoles they would sell. If GTA V would’ve come to Wii U I’d have bought it, and I don’t think I’m the only one.

Nintendo need to work more closely with third parties in future, and also help with the marketing of their games on the console. Nintendo throws its weight behind games like Professor Layton, Ace Attorney and Monster Hunter, and so those games are able to sell. It did not give similar help to Ubisoft when they were supporting the Wii U, and that’s probably something they should address.

    1. Ridley, the Angel of Death

Ubisoft didn’t deserve Nintendo’s help since they pretty much took a shit on their own games for the Wii U, so I’m actually glad Nintendo didn’t lift a finger to help them. And Nintendo most likely didn’t help because of the fact most of Ubisoft’s games released with a couple of glitches. I know I wouldn’t waste money marketing games that were not being released with the best quality.

  3. But I for one don’t want more than one system, so it would be nice if I could get some third party games on Wii U… It is only this way because Wii was a motion controlled Game Cube and that put a barrier between Nintendo and everyone else. 3rd parties will come back around, maybe not till the next system though

  4. The key phrase is “self-fulfilling prophecy” as they don’t put in the effort because they don’t think it will sell well, and it doesn’t sell well because they didn’t put in the effort. For example, Rayman sold best on the Wii U, but it didn’t sell great. It didn’t sell great because they delayed it from being a launch title and released it when the games drought ended. Had it released at launch, most people who liked New Super Mario U would buy it – they’re both good games of the same genre that appeals to a wide variety of gamers (at least those who buy Nintendo). Instead, they release Rayman in the same window as Wonderful 101, Pikmin 3, and Wind Waker HD. Poor sales cause Ubisoft to half-ass future games. For example, Watch Dogs is a game that seems tailor-made to work with the Wii U’s interface. Instead, we get a delayed, mediocre port of a game which was itself mediocre on other systems.

  5. In terms of next console genertation, (Wii U’s successor,) if Nintendo go for another gimmick controller that makes it more difficult for 3rd parties to develop for and Nintendo don’t try to at least match their competitors on power, then yes, third parties will ditch Nintendo almost completely. However, if Nintendo go for a normal controller, like the GameCube or Wii U Pro Controller, and aim for a power competitive console with a good and unique name that doesn’t confuse people, then third parties will come back to Nintendo. Whereas console power might not concerns some of us, myself included, it does for third parties. From one Nintendo fan to others on here, we need to understand this point…

            1. Except there’s no REAL good exclusives and Halo, also on PC, isn’t their best excuse anymore because its now a dying franchise. As for Live, its a ripoff service that’s still getting hack fucked by Lizard Squad like PSN.

                    1. If by “good” you mean empirically on par w/ Nintendo fun & quality, & possibly on par w/ empirically good 6th-gen-style games, then finding 1 on any platform in 8th gen except Wii U is a herculean task. Indy titles are a different matter, though only fit the literal definition of ‘3rd party’.

Otherwise, “good” is a subjective term.

                        1. Ridley, the Angel of Death

Well Rayman Legends was made BEFORE Ubisoft went into Ubishit mode, so I won’t punish a game that came before their sins were committed.

            2. Me and an Xbox One OR PS4? Never in a Million Years. Why? 2 reasons-
              1. I am a Nintendo fan and I am extremely happy with the Wii U, it’s my favourite console for the Gamepad because I love playing games off T.V and I watch Youtube on the Gamepad, which is awesome and the games, like Mario Kart 8 and Smash Bros for Wii U.
              2. Even if I did want to get either one of the other consoles, I wouldn’t be able to, because I am not in the best situation financially and whatever money I do have, I would rather spend on the necessary things, like food, gas and electricity.
I’m not hating on the Gamepad, it’s one of my favourite controllers, behind only to the Gamecube controller and the Pro Controller. I’m just saying, the reason why Third Parties shy away from the Wii U, other than the Install base, is that apparently, is that it takes more effort to separately code a game for the Wii U. To me, it’s just them being lazy, wanting to quickly get their game out and make quick money.
Yes, I live in the U.K, but not everybody here hates Nintendo, there are plenty of Nintendo fans here, myself included, but there are too many more people here that love playing yearly rehashed garbage.
On a side note, it seems like broken, buggy and unpolished games are the ones that seem to be considered next gen. Using that logic, is Sonic Boom Rise of Lyric next gen???
Still don’t believe that I am a Nintendo fan? Then check out my Miiverse profile, you will see everthing there. My Nintendo Network ID the you type in on Miiverse is AMAN1995. My profile name is ςγĢ★AMAN95. And I am on Youtube as well. Type in my MyNintendoNews username-Takerkaneanite619 on Youtube. Don’t watch any of my videos, just look at the videos I have uploaded, most of them were from WWE 12/13 Create A Wrestler for Wii. A few are Mario Kart, one is Smash Bros Brawl and a couple are non game wrestling videos. Not a single video is from a Playstation console OR a VCR Box One. I rest my case. Never…Ever…say I own an Xbox One, it’s just EXTREMELY insulting…

              1. ._. Never understood why people hate the Xbox. I know about the DRM but it seriously does not deserve that much hate.

            3. Lomg story short. I meant that Nintendo should make a controller, like the Gamecube controller or the Wii U Pro Controller for their next console, so that butthurt Third Parties can shut up and stop complaining.
Sorry about the really long comment…

              1. Not really long but I get your stance. Game pad does have some unique uses but I will agree it’s kinda restrictive in some areas but for the third party side, they don’t have to build a game around it besides using its standard button commands and analog sticks.

        1. What can we say? We are spoiled, Nintendo give us the best of the best and that is what we are use to; so it should not be hard to understand that when we see crap like COD: Ghost we do not jump over it like starving dogs over a piece of rotten meat. But for those poor souls in the competition, even those crazy guys that think they live in a golden flying city called PCMasterRace? They see shit like Destiny, AC Unity or Watch Dogs and swallow it like they would not be a tomorrow, because that is what they are use to eat; poor little piggies.

        2. that’s a terrible idea! why should nintendo absorb part of the cost for these third party developers just so they’ll make a decent game? they need to partner with more third party companies for sure, and also help promote them, but the quality of these 3rd party titles rest completely on these third party developers.

          1. The reason is that it would benefit Nintendo. It wasn’t long ago that Bayonetta 2, a third party game got game of the year status from many gamers and magazines. Nintendo HELPED make that. They funded it and they helped make it perform and look good on the Wii U. It’s probably sold quite a few Wii U’s. If there were more games like that, more people would get a Wii U and therefore more people might get other Nintendo games like Xenoblade Chronicles X. It’s a win/win situation to help create something that will draw more customers. And Nintendo’s involvement would help quite a bit with the concern that the game would just be an inferior game or buggy or whatever.

            1. Bayonetta 2 did get amazing reviews, but It did not sell well. I’m struggling to find the current figures but in it’s first week of sales it only sold 68,000 in the U.S Nintendo promoted it, helped out on it’s budget, but in the end it still didn’t sell well. it’s an amazing addition to the wii u library but there’s nothing to show that it moved consoles and nintendo isn’t releasing the end year sales figures for it.
giving these 3rd party companies free advertising and talking about projects on their direct is something they definitely need to do more, but right now nintendo doesn’t have the funds to help out multiple 3rd party companies just to put their games on wii u.

              1. Nintendo also helped w/ Ninja Gaiden 3 Razor’s Edge. They facilitated the enhancements of the original, but it eventually went multiplat & Ninja Gaiden Z skipped U (maybe a good thing, yet if Nintendo helped on Z…).

Anyway, I think Nintendo would be wise to help 3rd parties w/ Wii U games, but only exclusives. Sadly, 3rd parties are all about the multiplat; they can’t seem to profit or be content w/ exclusives anymore. Nintendo could get around that by resurrecting an IP that a 3rd party wouldn’t have otherwise returned to, or a game/franchise that was originally exclusive to a Nintendo platform.

Nintendo does need to show 3rd parties how it’s done, put them back on the right track & fund new Prince of Persia (could be Nintendo’s alternative to AC), NiGHTS, Skies of Arcadia, Crazy Taxi, Metroidvania, Jet Grind Radio, all IPs that seem to be collecting dust. Work w/ Capcom & Platinum Games to get new Viewtiful Joe & Okami on Wii U.

& if Ninty’s to secure Wii U ports, they should focus on the Tales series, Guilty Gear, & other cool titles that would help fill genre gaps.

Red Steel was a Wii exclusive, so get RS3 on Wii U already. Buck Bumble was an N64 exclusive, so do a Wii U remake. Contract SUDA 51 to make an original game or a No More Heroes 3 or Killer7 2. Help remake (no just an HD port) Vagrant Story & Final Fantasy IX.

But if Nintendo is unwilling to make a new Wave Race, F-Zero, & Eternal Darkness just because some new mechanic eludes them, then Nintendo isn’t concerned w/ padding Wii U’s library w/ solid games. I mean racing games: upgrade the graphics, add all-new tracks, add to/subtract from the roster, & there’s a solid, fun title right there, no need for a new mechanic. Plus, if they were on GCN, it should be a fairly easy template to use on Wii U since they are in the same architectural family. & if they continually approached Wave Race & F-Zero, then maybe a new mechanic would dawn on them. But sitting there & looking @ the games won’t inspire much. Veterans would love the familiarity. Rookies would be introduced to something that’s new to them. Ninty could crank 1 of each (except Eternal Darkness) out every console gen & still retain quality. Appease the hardcore & add to a console’s library. I mean, am I missing something w/ that assembly line logic?

                1. I’d agree with that, what I really think they should do is get third parties more involved with nintendo’s own Ip like F zero. it’s tough to make all these franchises directly in house, so get third parties involved in the process to speed up production, and to get more of their games on the wii u system. It would also build familiar/ better partnerships with third party developers and open the door for future 3rd party games to come to the system

                2. Ridley, the Angel of Death

If done right, I can see Eternal Darkness getting a new game every generation since the series has loads of eras of human history to choose from.

        3. Though it sounds nintendo is at wall with third party. Sony, and Micro fight over there support, and I don’t want to see nintendo hypeing up some stupid third party DLC *Cough Sony*COUGH DESTINY*. I think nintendo aleast picks third party that are made from great devs…minus that sonic crap. In the end nintendo can only do so much, third party’s fate on nintendo platform is up to the fans, and if they throw ports out there with lack of effort, and missing features then fans will not buy them, and go to people they know that makes good games on the platform

        4. Not that I have much sympathy for 3rd parties like UBI, but it is difficult to judge what type of games will sell on Nintendo systems.

Generally, Nintendo games have, and will always be the better games on Nintendo systems. But that’s not to say there can’t be great and successful 3rd party games on Nintendo systems. As commented above, I would gladly buy GTA V on my Wii U, as well as other top 3rd party RPGs.

3rd parties must do more to ascertain what Nintendo owners actually want and will pay money for, and not the crap they try and force feed them…cough…Watch Dogs…cough cough.

        5. If they miss out on third party support they have to make up for it in releasing more exclusives. You have to have variety. The way they release games at the moment is wrong because if you don’t like the one game they release a month you’re in a drought. There’s nothing I’m interested in til Splatoon and that is a massive drought to me.

Some people say just because you don’t like a game doesn’t mean there is a drought and I disagree with that. Nintendo releases one game a month if you’re lucky and if you aren’t interested in it what then? That’s right, nothing new to play. It’s a drought. I don’t give a sh!t what anyone says.

          1. I agree with this.

Now there is a fair bit of variety and I’m fortunate I like most of what’s coming out, but what about RPG fans or FPS shooter fans? RPG fans have had to wait until this year for something, unless they dip into Nintendo’s back catalogue.

Obviously Nintendo can’t just click their fingers and games suddenly appear, but they should never let these game droughts happen again.

        6. Adelman is right. Nintendo should market key third party titles like if they were their own. They tend to work more with the Japanese developers, and it’s never a guarantee (Bayonetta), but they really need to work on it. And more than simple Nintendo character skins.

Third party developers are a paradox. On one hand, they help in diversifying the gaming catalog for a console. They provide different genres that Nintendo might not care to work on. And they also help fill in the gaps between game releases so there’s always something else to play. Whether it’s winter or summer, rated e ir rated m, there should be something for anyone to play.

And on the other hand, they’re a competitor. People only have so much time and they have to allocate their free time to whatever interest them. If they only have a WiiU, then they only have what’s provided for them. And if they have more choices, then they might choose something other than a Nintendo product. Instead of buying Smash they might just buy Call Of Duty, or instead of Zelda they might buy Grand Theft Auto.

I guess you could call them frenemies. And I would prefer variety.

It’s kinda sad to ask Nintendo to market third party games, considering they do a poor job of marketing their own products. If it wasn’t for their core audience, Nintendo would struggle much more in advertising.

        7. Gay Commander at it again with his faggaddy talk, learn to “READ” first BITCH! before going on a freakin Faggot fit, because this gentleman was not bashing Nintendo, and he never lost his job Faggot, he resigned because he was tired wearing diapers eeveryday to work,so he told Reggie listen man,I’m a grown Adult,I’m not a baby,I’m not going to wear this anymore,”I quit”

        8. I agree with this guy’s statements, except that I think Nintendo has already gotten the clue and is committing resources to 3rd parties to release exclusives on its system. Witness Bayonetta and Devil’s Third. Worth of mention are also numerous collaborations such as Smash Bros and Hyrule Warriors. Nintendo is doing everything right on the gaming side of things. It’s their marketing strategy where they continue to falter.

            1. Nintendo makes games for Everyone. Just because it looks like it’s for kids, that doesn’t mean its gameplay or all its challenges are solely for kids. If anything, it seems like most third parties are catering to kids, or at least the immatue masses on the cusp of adulthood who feel the need to overcompensate for their pre-teen or early teens shortcomings. Have you seen how goofy all these “serious” and violent games are? Sad thing is, these games might arrest the mental development of those impressionable kids.

                  1. Nintendo Elite Commander Quadraxis

Clearly you have no idea why people are Nintendo fans…

I wouldn’t buy a Metroid game if it was the same as CoD because I wouldn’t recognise it as a Metroid game nor would it be a Metroid game just because you put characters from it there…

        9. Pingback: Third-party su console Nintendo

        10. I’ve yet to see a 3rd party game that had Nintendo 1st party quality that was released at the same time as other platforms. The closest example would be ZombiU. Nintendo did plenty to showcase that game, even having a ZombiU bundle. For a brand new IP and mature at that…it performed fairly well. It was not as polished as a Nintendo first party game or even close, but it sold well enough to get a sequel. Imagine that…a studio cultivating a following instead of expecting immediate success. They could have made a better second game set in a different city and over time it gets a strong fanbase. But Nintendo plays the long game…all these 3rd parties have shareholders to answer to and need instant success. Meanwhile Nintendo can make Pikmin and despite less than stellar sales, keep making them and building its fanbase….and Splatoon will be the same way. Also, Nintendo DOES help with development (Hyrule Warriors) and DOES contribute financially (Platinum) to get 3rd parties…so this guy really needs to stop talking nonsense. He should move on and stop being bitter

        11. Of course this is part of the reason, Nintendo is one of the top – selling game companies and publishing on a non-Nintendo platform means not having to worry about that competition.

        12. Its not just about competing. Tardiness and greed also plays the bigger key. In which case, EA got butthurt over Origin rejection, Ubisoft has gone selfishly stupid like EA, Bethseda is full of glitchfest shit calling Wii U hardware weak and yet they build a Metro Last Light demo that ran just fine plus they can’t build one glitch-free game to save their own ass, Activision is its usual selective self in between EA and Ubisoft, Capcom has gone off the suicidal deep end to bury its own grave with butchering Megaman, RE, Devil May Cry, Marvel Vs. Capcom and more.

On the other hand, its also Nintendo’s fault for not advertising the fucking Wii U in every chance it had but its always about the 3DS isn’t? Its not the hardware being weak or anything of that type of usual BS, its all sides being ridiculous in their own perspective. If this isn’t resolved anytime soon, we can expect another video game crash and wonder who’s gonna bail us out this time?

        13. THIS IS 100 PERCENT TRUE!!
3rd party games have always sold the best and most on Sony and Microsoft consoles and are the biggest selling games on both consoles trouncing the first party games.
Nintendo first party have always been why people buy Nintendo consoles, while Sony and Microsoft fans buy their consoles mainly for 3rd party, ie Call Of Duty, Fifa,Battlefield, GTA, etc.
3rd party know that their games will easily sell on rival consoles as %95 of their games are better than the first party drivel Sony and Microsoft have!
Nintendo first party games are %99 better than any 3rd party game and why publishers will not waste time in making games for Wii U as they will get OBLITERATED by Nintendo first party and why they sell like crap.
Publishers make games to make money, they do not care about quality that went out of the window a decade ago.
Nintendo makes quality games and always has 3rd party cannot compete.

        14. Assassins creed Unity, Battle field 4 are the reason Nintendo does better than third parties. Nintendo games work out of the box.

          1. How ironic that it was a disappointing year for every console except Wii U because of 3rd parties?Even Angry Joe comments on this

        15. I think what Dan Adelman says could be a “part” of it, but I don’t think it represents the whole picture. There are many deterrents.

        16. I can agree but it’s really for profit not the system. 3rd parties were all in awe when Nintendo first showed them the system and quickly jumped on board. But very poor sales stopped their interests therefore the system sold even less until Nintendo released many great games (which no one bought apparently) how ironic that 3rd parties made 2014 a disappointing year for gaming while Wii U was on top

        17. Microsoft sends a team to help make sure everything is good? Then why are so many games broken at launch? Not to mention Microsoft would charge a hefty sum to “help” you. As for Sony, how’s their strategy working out for them? Near death…lol

        18. Even if a 3rd party did make games to beat the quality of 1st party games, which would be really difficult, the overall most of the userbase would continue buying the games that are familiar and miss out on buying the new game. I would like some more 3rd party titles on my systems regardless. The more great games, the better.

        19. Consumers wanting the most for their dollar will always tip the scales of business making a profit. Sure some people would buy GTA V on Wii U but most people want the most out of the same entertainment value (graphics).

It’s harder to sell gameplay than simply giving a visual presentation of what’s “better.” People understood the Wii because you could see the advantages in action. With the Wii U, not so much, and even then, it is the lower graphical console on this new generation so if you’re not into the Nintendo franchise you go somewhere else.

        20. Same here, I am actually quite frustrated with my Wii U because while I know Nintendo’s first-party titles are great in quality, not all of them appeal to me. Sadly I’m a RPG, adventure, fighting gamer so there is little that is offered for me unlike the multiple platform games available. Now I need to resort getting another system to fill the gaps in between till Splatoon releases.

This seems like a difficult bridge Nintendo needs to overcome; getting third-party dev’s on their system. Not all third-party games are just grey shooters, there are some that I would most definitely would get especially JRPGS.

        21. here is an idea! why don’t third party developers actually make games that are designed for the fucking console in mind ? an original and new game for wii u . another for the xbox(ugh i hate microsoft tho but for other reasons) and for ps4? would it not make sence to make a platformer and adventure games and also some slow to medium paced horror games for the wii u ? actually more platformers for everyone but the point still stands! original games designed for the console in mind. and then maby THEN they will design something better then what we have gotten in the past years instead of gimping versions to high heaven!
atleast then we know we would get atleast a decent designed game on the console!

but these damned developers are so fixated on high graphics over the top cinematic overused timed button pressing that they keep forgetting the game itself! and they also pump out stale sequels each year that barely anything is new and exiting anymore! i’m all for getting the games out faster but atleast get them done that is all i am asking-..

now sorry for this rant and imma head to bed then wake up eat and then play some super smash brothers 4 and monsterhunter!

        22. Speculation about Ninty’s quality being a double-edged sword has been around @ least since N64. Really, after SNES, most of Nintendo’s qualities have been portrayed as weaknessess. Anyway…

When Wii U launched, its sales-numbers were on par, if not better than 360 during its launch window. However, 3rd parties weren’t prepared for 8th gen; even PS4 & X1 proved that. But 3rd parties were also unwilling to treat Wii U like a Nintendo console, instead most of their efforts were not only subpar, but were already designed for a different demographic–PS360. They seemed to want another platform to multiplat the shit oit of. Maybe, MAYBE they tried to expand to a different audience, but they offered little to nothing for Ninty’s demographic & failed to really polish the majority of their titles.

Red Steel 3? Prince of Persia? To Ubi’s credit, ZombiU was pretty good. But yanking Rayman Legends exclusivity, delaying a finished game, & releasing during a bigger game’s release? Yeah, Ubi proved they are, or someone high in their ranks is either a saboteur or a greedy moron. Nothing of how Rayman Legends’ release shows it was handled correctly. They basically did it again w/ Watch_Dogs. Inbetween? Assassin’s Creed III & IV? Sorry, never cared for that franchise or genre; if I did, I’d have gotten a twin. Yet they & many 3rd parties continue to operate that way. Con artists, opportunists, &…junkies. They’re their own worst enemies. It’s clear, @ least to me, they keep chasing those pretty visuals, but it comes @ a huge price, both monetarily & @ the expense of risks & even their catalogs.

Need for Speed: Most Wanted U looked great, & to EA’s credit (stop laughing, okay just a little more), a lot went into polishing it. But…it’s NOT an arcade racer? Never mind. & Unity? If you look desperate, the consumers might…continue to buy your shit? Damn. I’d say y’all should free up your franchise, release your grip on the fans’s curly-whirlies, & go 3rd party, but you ARE 3rd party, the masses stupid, & the platform companies powerless (damn you, free market & your double-edged sword, you mock democracy; or wait, Sonysoft invests a ton of cash before the free market has a fighting chance).

Did Capcom even have any launch games? But okay, still no true Resident Evil, but no 3rd Chronicles? Then again, they lost a lot of good people, just as SEGA & Konami did. Their catalogs are dusty, & their recent efforts aren’t even games (Snake needs to go to Hollywood already).

From SNES to Wii, I found way more 3rd party titles that caught my interest than 1st party. Hel, Heatseaker & The Sky Crawlers (both Wii games) weren’t exactly the prettiest or most polished games, but I did have fun w/ them (& 1 is a licensed game, which is usually a taboo for me). But apparently my tastes became very niche in the 7th gen, but I haven’t reallychanged. Since more & more people focused on the “AAA” titles, FPS & Sandbox games, consumers (mostly noobs) & the industry as a whole changed. Terms like ‘gamer’, ‘game’, & ‘console’ have lost their meaning, & their demograph has been pushed aside, damn near forced to seek Nintendo. We are a dying breed & oh so outnumbered.

I think Wii U’s troubles have a lot to do w/ the ailing health of the Japanese industry & the conquest by the West. & both the West & many Japanese 3rd parties & Sony have abandoned the previous paradigm, evident in a glut of cutscenes, particular genres (FPS/Sandbox), & glitches, & an emphasis on hardcore audiovisuals; all @ the expense of gameplay, many genres & franchises, & polish. Turned-based RPGs, Strategy RPGs, 2D AND 3D platformers, 3rd Person Shooters, Arcade Racers, Survival Horror…now increasingly scarce; not much variety. Nintendo is really the only company, along w/ Platinum Games & a few indies, who are preserving true gaming &, in some cases, trying to cultivate a natural evolution. Microsoft was always trying to derail this, but when Sony turned traitor, 3rd parties became fair-weather friends to Ninty because their moneyhats would blow away. When Nintendo, SEGA, & Sony were the big 3, they each brought their own unique flavor to the industry & 3rd parties generally knew what exclusives & multiplats would work where. Now, it’s the big 2: Nintendo vs. Sonysoft, & not very many 3rd parties want to dev for the oddman out.

I also believe that the more people grow up w/ the internet, the more thay’ll be trapped by selective reasoning. & since Sony & MS have “Trojan horses” already in place, & since Mario, Donkey Kong, Zelda, etc. aren’t gritty enough, Nintendo has a harder time doing what they do.

Should Nintendo start making interactive movies & multimedia boxes geared w/ graphics whores in mind just to compete w/ Sonysoft? Unless Ninty gimped their interactive movies, 3rd parties would still clry too much quality to compete w/. Oh, the Nintendo curse…

        23. I blame Nintendo, I had every Nintendo home console, I really do believe they made the wrong decision since the game cube with no clicking dual analog one Z button, then the controller got worse for Wii, and bad graphics compare to other consoles, the core gamers for two generations missed out on good controller and graphics causing many to support other consoles, many kids take pride in their console just being power. The results we see it with Wii u not being supported by the core gamer anymore. I love Nintendo but they don’t understand western people I mean c’mon new 3ds without power cable no regular size new 3ds in North America, small things matters and Nintendo doesn’t understand. I’m glad they’re doing bad hope they can learn from all their mistakes.

        24. What i think Nintendo should do with the successor of Wii U:

1- Release a home console that pushes the standard for console specs, making a console easy to develop and easy tomake port from Pc and the others, powerful as the competitors, or better.

          2- Region Free Console

3- Pursues third-party support from the leading publishers, while maintaining quality over their first party games.

4- Creates a stable online service that adheres to modern tech (cloud based services, connected accounts across devices, etc.)

5- Cross Buy, Cross save & Cross Play Feature

They’ve always been amazing at games, perhaps the best in quality over the decades, but they really need someone to help them make a modern home console and modernize the way they think.

That doesn’t mean they need to do microtransactions or make iphone games, and that doesn’t mean they can’t be unique with their console and image. I just think a Nintendo console that could play Tekken, CoD, Assassin’s Creed, Dragon Age, GTA, The Witcher and the other third party titles, as well as Super Smash, Mario Kart, Zelda, Metroid and the rest of the amazing first party titles, with a modern online infrastructure and chat system, could be a force to reckon with. Most people I know would buy a Nintendo console if they could just play good third party games with the same content of the competitors.

As Wii U gamer, i wish that with the successor of the Wii U they will start to listen more to what gamers want and less they’re old way of thinking people

        25. I do agree with the man but not on all the points. Nintendo, don’t go to western 3rd party. They will happily go and help platinium, mistwalker and other Japanese studio but not western studio. The only western studio they will help are indie companies. Which explain why developpers can’t get their games on wii U and most of the time they put what they can.

After that you have the kind of Ubidsoft who try to milk Wii U owner as much as they can and put half a game on it. Because Nintendo does not do much DLC, the studio are not kind on Nintendo. Personally I buy 3rd party game when I know the games is not a rip off. One example which come to my mind is :Batman Arkham City which way better than PS3 version and Unjustice. On the other end I was waiting for watch Dog on Wii U then when I discovered they just put a bloody map on the wii U version and the game cost at least £10 more than PS3 version or PC version… no brainer I bought the PC version.

I think nintendo should also put some money and manpower to help western 3rd party for development. Which I think will lead to dveloppers to make the same content as the competitor and truly utilise the untapped potential of the wii U.

        26. Not that I won’t buy third parties but they normally are missing something. There are few third party games I want to play more then once. Where Nintendo games there are few games I don’t want to play more then once. There is something about the Nintendo games that can make you keep playing. There are few third parties that can do the same. There are a few though but sadly they are all the titles or companies that haven’t even tried putting a game on the Wii U yet.

This would probably be a good option for Nintendo as this would also make sense to ease up on the cost of royalties that Nintendo has which is probably another reason this comes to fruition.
