NPD: Wii U Reportedly Sold Less Than 63.7K In The United States During January

Nintendo has told Venture Beat that Wii U hardware and software increased by nearly 30 percent and nearly 45 percent over the same month last year. It’s not really the concrete numbers we were looking for, but it’s something. To put that in comparison the Xbox One sold more than 140K and was the second best-selling home console. Here’s some more information that came out of today’s NPD numbers for January.

  • Smash Wii U – 90K, 1.4 million LTD (digital + retail)
  • Smash 3DS – 90K, 2.1 million LTD (digital + retail)
  • Pokemon ORAS – 150K, 2.7 million LTD (digital + retail)
  • Wii U software is up nearly 45% year over year
  • PS4: #1 spot
  • Xbox One: Best January ever, so more than 140K
  • Wii U: Up nearly 30% year over year => a bit under ~63.7K

        1. Yes I checked the link sickr and you’re right! It’s just the article you wrote didn’t state anything about it that’s all! XD Not saying you need to change it or anything so I hope you don’t get the wrong idea! :)

  1. This is great and all but they really need to do something for the Wii U to help it not decrease in sales all the time. When a game releases on it, the Wii U sales increase but then after a while they die down again until the next game releases. But on Xbox One they never really go down to often because 3rd party games release maybe every month (not sure exactly how often). Too many droughts Nintendo! You guys need to fix this if you wanna even start catching up to the Xbox One or PS4!

    1. Every month? Are you crazy? Both PS4 and XBO have at least a top or mid tier game released every week or two. That’s why they don’t really go down in sales. As as now, Nintendo has a semi yearly released schedule for games (of course I’m exaggerating but they do have long gaps.)

  2. I think sales lacking can be atributed to the lack of new Wii U games being released, but it does have a decent library so far.

          1. no, they aren’t :)
and i am sure they are not fans of naruto. most of naruto fanboys only think life is grey and spend all the day saying they are bored *cough cough, facebook status: boring christmas, boring sunday, boring whatever cough, cough*

We know. Also, we cant. The servers are too full. You have to get in at 3am if you want a stable server.

I’ve been trying to get my code for NES remix for half an hour already – Oh hey there It is. Thanks Hollow.

      1. Oh. I can get on anytime. I didn’t think you’ll knew. There’s some many fucking great games. To bad I don’t have enough coins to buy kid Icarus uprising.

      1. Honestly, if you want people to be able to find your site by clicking your name, go into WordPress settings and move your site address to what you want. Also, don’t go around advertising (admit it, this is a bit of advertising for you) or doing what seems like advertising, as, in my opinion, it kinda does the opposite on sites like WordPress. (Drives people AWAY) Just a couple tips I guess…

  3. Here are Vgchartz numbers for comparison..

Wii U’s sold in the U.S. The week of :
    Jan. 3- 51,000
    Jan. 10- 26,000
    Jan. 17- 23,000
    Jan. 24- 20,000

Doesn’t show the week of Jan. 31st. So if you just count three weeks not including the 3rd, it’s at 69k. The final week of January would put it around 90k. Add half of the Jan. 3rd week and that would put Wii U numbers for January at 110k.

The reason the numbers are lower on NPD is because the week of Jan. 3rd is counted towards December, but technically half should be counted for January.

There is a huge difference in numbers here. Either Vgchartz is way off, or NPD is way off. And honestly vgchartz has been pretty damn accurate lately.

If Nintendo said Wii U numbers were 30% higher in January 2015 than in January 2014, that would put January 2014 Wii U sales at around 40k, according to NPD. Something doesn’t add up because the Wii U sold around 80k in January 2014.

Sorry but the numbers just don’t add up. This article is inaccurate.

      1. NPD doesn’t list official numbers on media sites. Anybody saying either of those are the numbers are just pulling stuff out their ass.

      2. Vgchartz is estimated numbers, but it’s estimated off actual collected data. And like I have said, Vgchartz has been suprisingly accurate lately, especially on Wii U sales numbers. I am no defender of Vgchartz, but before Nintendo released official Wii U numbers of 9.2 million, vgchartz had them at 9.1 million. Not bad for an estimate I would say. So it would be kind of silly to just ignore their January numbers when their December numbers were so accurate. In fact Vgchartz has been very accurate estimating Wii U numbers for the last two years.

    1. Don´t forget Xenoblade X which is out in Japan on May and hopefully very soon after this in EU/US. All those unannouched games we may hear on E3?

Let´s hope this will be huge gaming year

  4. For a fairly poor person who’s VERY fortunate to have the collections I have, that sounds like they’re swimming in money. I could live a full, happy life with just 1/3 of what Nintendo makes in a month. Or even in one week (on a good week).

  5. Geez, everytime, every site, even some Nintendo sites (like this one), it’s doom and gloom, all negative, nothings good. How bout some positive articles huh?

Here: “Wii U Reportedly Sold More Than 63.6K In The United States During January”

There, is that so hard? No one gives a shit here about PS4 and X1 sales and games.
