First Nintendo Smartphone Games Will Be Released Later This Year

Nintendo has confirmed that the first smartphone games that will be developed in collaboration with DeNA will be available to download at the end of the year. The company hasn’t revealed any hints as to which iconic game franchise will be tackled first, but it will certainly be interesting to see which series makes its debut on mobile. Which video game franchise do you think we will see first?

      1. No doubt. But having Nintendo characters, you can bet Nintendo will rake in a lot of money from this new venture. Mobile gaming is a huge market now. HUGE. Nintendo may just take over that pie.

          1. Basically. Before Nintendo even announced Amiibos, I said they should get into it because of the iconic characters that Nintendo has in their arsenal. No matter what, they were bound to sell well.

We see how popular those figures have become.

I can see the same thing happening with mobile and tablet games that cater to that crowd of mobile gamers. People love Nintendo characters and now they will be available to a whole new demographic. I’m sure many mobile gamers love Nintendo characters too but don’t own any gaming hardware. Seeing these characters star in new games is enough for people to give it a try on their mobile devices which are so easy to access.

    1. I would be please to see an NES style version of Hang-man on mobile developed by Nintendo. They would use 8-bit character models of Robin Williams and twist the game to where you try to hang him for being a waste of life and a abusive father to Zelda.

      1. You should be ashamed of yourself, saying such nonsense after the man has died. I’m not offended by the Hangman remark, I’m offended by the Robin Williams remark. Now sod off, asshole…

      2. My Wind Waker Is Bigger (I.A.B.A.B)

Oh that’s just fucking evil. Brilliant but just so damn harsh to even taken in.

      3. why the heck you bring robin williams into this?
i have a better idea, i want to see a “kick the clergy” game.

    1. Nintendo Lieutenant Cereza

I’m not happy. HOWEVER! King; the company that profits from mobile knock-off games just pooped their pants. Cuz one of the biggest fish in the sea is about to come to town.
      http://i.giphy.com/rod1LnilW2rDO.gif
While I’m not happy, I’ll be glad if Nintendo starts giving hell to companies that have been taking it easy for so long. Show em what a real fight is like.

      1. I love this man. LMAO. One of the best comments I’ve read all day and a great way of looking at it all.

      2. Ridley, the Angel of Death

Good luck to King when they try to fuck with Nintendo & try to steal from their mobile games! With any luck, we’ll see Nintendo bury King for their greedy transgressions against small companies that can’t really fight back or indie mobile game developers that barely have money to make their games, much less fight a company like King in a legal battle in the courts.

  1. Imo, Pokemon Shuffle would fit iOS or Android devices much more than the 3DS, but I guess they said that they weren’t going to port games from consoles to smartphones…

    1. Phones can’t even handle PS2 games, and the majority can barely handle PS1 and N64 games. There is no way in hell that they’ll handle GCN games. We can only hope but I sincerely doubt it.

      1. Lol any modern smartphone with at least 2.0 gbs of ram and a decent processor will be able to run ps2 games with ease. My s5 is overclocked and I can play through psp ps2 games.

        1. Really? Then how is it that my Quad Core 2.4 GHz tablet runs the PS2 emulator with shitty as frame rate? Or do you consider 10-15fps acceptable?

  2. So damn disappointed with Nintendo right now. I hope the game turn to shit and they fire whoever decided to sell out to the mobile crowd. The only thing they care about is posting their score on Facebook and that the game is free

    1. I’d rather have Nintendo try and fail, than for them to not try at all. Besides, this is probably for those people that keep pestering Nintendo to do things with Smartphones. I for one am indifferent. Best case senario, an offical Miiverse app. Worst case senario, a game that shoves in app purchases down people’s throats. I’m not too concerned about it, because DLC is a touchy subject and look how well they handled that. Low priced and Free DLC. So I don’t think that Nintnedo will force in app purchases. Don’t get me wrong, it will be there, but it will be just there if people wish to use it and nothing extreme…

      1. Nintendo handled it well because we the nintendo fans (im included) are so fucking hipocrytes… Mk8 dlcs werent particulary cheap they were average nor the best nor the worst but we used it as a standard because we are so fucking fanboys

        1. Are you dumb@sses still posting that BS are you really telling me 12 bucks was a bad deal for everything you got ? That is how doc should be done mk8 was a complete game already and no don’t sh*t post about it not bring so the game had more content than the last game ..plus seeing how we get one Mario kart a gen I welcome dlc to get more stuff

          1. I thought it was a great deal. £11 for 16 courses, 6 characters and alternate colours for Yoshi and Shy Guy? Heck yeah. I love Mario Kart 8. The only thing that would take it from awesome to perfect, are battle arenas. Even then, I didn’t think that the new Battle Mode was as bad as people say. I enjoyed it…

            1. It’s too bad they completely destroyed the online points system. Mario Kart is pretty boring without the online…

                  1. It wouldn’t have been that bad if you can hold 2 items, but when you can only hold one item, then it starts to get noticeably annoying. I have lost so many online races through getting a coin in 1st, 2nd or 3rd and getting dropped to near last place because I getthe coin item, try to chain to another item box to get a defensive item, but I still get a coin. That is the only reason I stopped playing online, it was getting frustrating and stupid…

        2. 12$ for half the content of a 60$ game? Seems stupidly cheap to me when Activision charges 15$ for crappy packs of 4 COD maps or EA charges 20$ for a single fucking Battlefield map.

      1. I was refering to the fact that I’m happy that they at least tried, rather than say, ‘Hey, the Smartphone thing, we won’t be able to do it.’ I’m not wishing that they fail…

          1. I said that I’d rather Nintendo try and fail, than not try at all. This means that I’m happy that Nintendo are at least trying, rather than saying that it’s not their cup of tea and call ot a day. You’ve both misinterpreted what I meant and I sincerely apologize for it. I would never want ANY company to fail, not even the hated ones like EA and Ubisoft…

      1. A mobile pokemon would be amazing! While there are emulators and such, none retain the battling, trading, and online features of the actual games.

    1. Exactly, no NEW Mario. This could easily be ports of like old games to the mobile market. They also said, no new mainline Mario games, so this could easily be a spinoff of some sort.

      1. I play WWE Supercard a lot, as a side thing.
Nintendo could do a similar game with Pokemon where you recieve cards in tiers, so Common, Uncommon, Rare, Super Rare and Ultra Rare and you get given 10 cards to start off with, including 1 Rare, 3 Uncommon and 6 Common Pokemon Cards. You can level them up and earn 2 or 3 cards at the end of a battle from a random batch of cards and combine two duplicate Pokemon cards to make that card even stronger. They can have Pokemon tournaments between people of similar rank to earn better cards. In terms of in app purchases, they could have it so that you can buy in game money(or earn it from completing challenges,) and use that in game currency to cards based on tier. So you can buy an Ultra Rare card if you want to, but it isn’t necessary to enjoy the game. That way, it’s there as an option, but isn’t forced…

          1. I know. I was talking about that at first, but porting it to other devices. But on the second comment, I was thinking of a similar game to WWE Supercard, but with Pokemon…

  3. Is DeNA a American company? If so, now finally America will get the respect it deserves from Nintendo and now maybe we will get more games and events

    1. Nope. Only games made exclusively for mobile will appear on the smartphone market, and they will be developed by ‘both’ Nintendo and DeNA, thankfully, other than just DeNA.

  4. for everyone complaining, they should shut up because this only strengthen the brand and helps them move forward with the other core projects (home and handheld consoles) while still making profits… This is good, and I wouldn’t mind playing some other types of games on my phone or Ipad frankly, and most people are down for it as well

    1. You’re forgetting that you’re dealing with dumbasses around here lol. These rejects complain about anything and then praise it 4 months later.

      1. Yup, I’ve been getting Nintendo news on this site for probably five years now, and the majority of the people who comment on here act like or are complete and utter idiots.

    2. “Other core projects”,” strengthen the brand” Like what? Another Pokemon Shuffle with MORE micro transaction crap to make up for shallow gameplay? Don’t fucking kid yourself, lol.

  5. I really wish there was a Miiverse community where we could speak out about these ideas “directly” to Nintendo. Why has this not been done yet? Plenty of us fans and Wii U/3DS owners could speak out. This mobile thing sounds like selling out and in response to all the haggling from those denouncing Nintendo’s efforts. I’m all for Miiverse Apps, Nintendo Accounts, and Nintendo News on mobile devices, but they better learn a lot from this venture as per their “way of gaming” and apply it well. Nintendo has always found a way regardless of the situations they end up in. As long as their games remain fun, beautiful, and inspiring there can be no doubt of a bright future.

      1. I like that. Miiverse Direct Community. That’s the perfect name right there. They have some special communities already. Hell, they just made one for Play Nintendo.

          1. Yeah. There’s no where to write to now that Nintendo Power is gone and there are plenty of players active on the Miiverse. I’ve sent a few emails and made a few calls myself, but nothing would work better than this. I think it would be better than checking in on sites like this. And fans can inquire about unannounced games too. Personally I’d at least have a place to advocate F-Zero. With this whole mobile decision in association we could see a lot of cool ideas come to light.

  6. For those wondering:

DeNA is a Tokyo-based company that provides a large number of services not just delegated to the mobile market. Their extensive portfolio can be found here: http://dena.com/intl/services/services-portfolio/

A company like that teaming up with Nintendo could end up hugely being in Nintendo’s favor right now. Not only does that mean Nintendo could end up having far better online services now, but they could also end up having quite the huge presence on the mobile market now as well.

With the Wii U performing better and seeing a rise in sales, along with the New Nintendo 3DS bolstering sales in that platform, and now the much anticipated Codename NX that could potentially be a dedicated gaming console and portable fusion device, as well as amiibo selling as well as it is now…I think Nintendo might actually know what it is doing now.

Yes, the Wii U did underperform. But you can’t argue that Nintendo didn’t try its best to capture back core Nintendo fans and gamers alike with the platform: it served as the bridge towards all the decisions you see the company making now and it still has great games for it that make it (personally) one of my favorite consoles of all-time.

I definitely enjoy playing my Wii U far more than I did the Gamecube and Wii, and I never really was too interested in the portable market Nintendo had until the Nintendo 3DS.

    So, let’s face the facts:
It takes 6 years for each new portable system to release, 5 for each console. The Wii U launched in 2012, the Nintendo 3DS in 2011…so a 2017 release of a fusion console that merges together the home console and portable systems together should have already been highly anticipated with the merger of their R&D teams.

No one can even guess the possibilities this new system can bring to the front, but we can all hope to hear more about it next year during E3.

Even then, the Wii U has just hit its stride, so I’m positive Nintendo will support the console in the meantime until 2018. Same goes for the Nintendo 3DS. I doubt Nintendo would get rid of either of their home console or portable system markets because both still show massively untapped potential; this new system could be a way of Nintendo further expanding its business in the gaming industry.

  7. They already made a mobile game, its called Kirby and the Rainbow Curse. All they need to do is port it and probably drop the price. That would sell like hot cakes and the game looks like something that makes more sense on Android/iOS anyways.

        1. That’s an amazing idea. Strip it to a few levels and then ask them to buy the full game on the Wii U for the full game.

They could also take it a step further and charge per level or level pack on the iOS store or Play store if they wanted the full game there

  8. I really hope this is a same time release with iOS, Android, and Windows phone.

I don’t want to be left out

  9. It would be great if they could bring over the Virtual Console to the Smartphones/Tablets – it would be really cool to play some of ’em old NES/SNES/GB/GBC/GBA games on a portable device. Especially those that haven’t been released yet in the 3DS eshop. *cough* Minish Cap *cough* A Link to the Past *cough*

  11. Hopefully it’s not a brand new F-Zero or Metroid game exclusive to smartphone devices.

That would piss a LOT of people off lol!

      1. My Wind Waker Is Bigger (I.A.B.A.B)

This fucking reply is beyond stupid. You know how stupid you sound right? Your thinking about the customers and what the would like. If the customer likes it than the money rolls in. Quality is what makes you the money.

        1. Debatable on the “quality is what makes you the money” part, but agree on the if the customer likes it part. There have to be enough people who like it for it to make money.

  13. I’m personally quite proud of Nintendo right now! ^.^
Instead of just deciding it’s not their thing (making app-games) they actually are going to try.
Now, I bet it’s mostly due to all the comments and complaints they always get about how they should go mobile and all, but it’s also hard to miss on how profitable the mobile industry is.
I don’t care either way really, whether they make app-games or not, because I don’t even have a platform that can play those games. I know that most app-games are crappy, but these are coming from a good gaming company, so there’s a higher chance of these games being good, or at least decent.
Besides, this’ll expand their consumer base as well as get them more money to make the dedicated console games that we all know and love.
Not to mention, this could raise their reputation as this move is seen as a favorable one considering that fact that Nintendo’s shares just skyrocketed almost immediately after their announcement.
Overall, I feel like this is a harmless event and that we’ve no need to freak out over it. The only negative I can see is Nintendo falling into the app-game ways and never making a dedicated console game ever again (or something to that extent). And I can’t really see that happening.
I think this is good for Nintendo, and i think it’s even better because it shows that willing to try new things and that their testing out new areas to reach out even further into the market. This plus the QoL (Quality of Life) project, which I’m still not too certain of, but not concerned about either, show how progressive Nintendo is getting.
I like Nintendo to test new things, it’s how they’ve always been, experimentive and creative.
Besides, if they’re making games like Pokémon Shuffle, Pokémon Rumble, or Mario vs. Donkey Kong, then I’d totally be interested. (These are games I feel would work well as app-games by the way)
And I don’t have a smart phone or tablet!

  14. For me, it’s completely irrelevant what games Nintendo will be bringing to smartphones; I won’t be touching that shit with a ten foot pole. If this is seriously what it’s coming to, full-on retro gaming is what I’m personally heading for.
