UK Retailer GAME Loses Value As First Half Profits Fall

Today hasn’t been a good day for UK video game specialist retailer GAME. Shares in the company have dropped 7% as the retailer posted a fall in both profits and sales. Sky News reports that sales in the 26 weeks to 24 January fell marginally to £582.1m. The company has blamed it on a lack of high-profile releases to boost its profits. GAME tried to reassure investors that things will pick up after Easter with games like Batman Arkham Knight and Metal Gear Solid V.

“The video games market remains dynamic and competitive.”

“While we experienced some challenging conditions over the Christmas trading period, we are confident that our strategy of focusing on customer recruitment, combined with the significant and growing number of Xbox One and PlayStation 4 owners across our two major territories, provides a solid foundation from which to drive growth over the medium term.

“In the coming weeks and months we can look forward to a solid line up of new physical and digital games launches. Our pre-order rates on the major titles are encouraging and we have secured exclusive editions on many of the key titles.

“We continue to manage the business prudently, balancing the need to fund growth with the discipline of returning excess capital.

“In this regard, I am pleased to announce the group’s intention to return £25m to shareholders by way of a special dividend, in addition to our maiden interim dividend of £12.5m”.

    1. How does Gamestop act? Like a business trying to make a profit? Gamestop is not a charity, and they do not give out anything for free. It’s become a hypster trend to hate on Gamestop. I for one will be sad to see one of the last dedicated video game stores to go out of business..

        1. Omg GameStop cuts then throws away their damaged games so dumpster divers can’t sell them back their own shit. Quick, everyone grab your torches.

  1. Well, all those people that bitch and moan constantly about Gamestop and GAME will eventually get their wish. I give both companies five years before they really start to snowball downhill. Just don’t come crying to me when you have to order all your physical copies of games off Amazon.

  2. I’m not surprised, they overprice everything (£15 for Amiibo!!!) and they have staff that either no nothing or lie, overheard one talking to a woman about the Wii U and stated that it was definetly not back compatible with Wii games.

    1. I didn’t get a notification, but I still got it. (It was like a week ago). I was very surprised (in a fun way) because they usually notify you.

But my damn order was freakin cracked!! I emailed them asap.

  3. Meh. I’d be completely detached from this if it weren’t for the fact that I ordered Robin amiibo and hopefully they ship that next month.

  4. jtz Igbo Tribe and Decedent of Gad.

How PS4 is selling 100k a week for like 15 months straight. And broken games have been top 5 for 15 months straights. B.S.

  5. I have no time for game. They ruined GameStation. They overprice everything! My Mrs bless her brought a few things at Game, at Xmas, was shocked how much she paid for a camo ps4 control and a game…

  6. I say CLOSE them!
    They no longer support Nintendo!
They are so over priced its ridiculous!
They only focus on Xbox and playstation releases!
They have a weird policy of having dummy boxes for games you can’t buy!
They have no interest in Nintendo!
    They charge £15 for a £10 amiibo!
They Don’t honour any of thier trade in policies!
