Japan: Wii U Sells 17K, Nintendo 3DS Sells 17K

The charts from Japan are out thanks to Media Create, and this week sees Splatoon debut at 144,818 units, which is higher than last week’s top spot, Witcher 3’s, total lifetime sales so far. There are only two new Nintendo titles, both on the Nintendo 3DS– Hatsune Miku: Project Mirai DX at number 2, and Downtown Nekketsu Jidaigeki at number 7. Hardware sales are up across the board, especially as Splatoon has boosted Wii U sales to more than double from last week. You can check out the sales for yourself below:

    1. Hey, um, whoever wrote this might want to now that you made a typo, unless FFX has sold 2mil copies since last week it’s not at 2mil+.

      1. The 2 mil number is reference to the total lifetime. (Numbers in parentheses ) is lifetime. Not weekly.

We need to find you a better teacher of English Baron Zemo, good grief, your troll insult backfired on your ownself.

        1. To be fair there’s much worse than that, but the question about the recital preschool crap. Ugh, shudders.

  1. Sir Isaac Newton of Judah

Great Job Nintendo. This is great, as Jtz of Judah would state, or you need is to have made filler games after every big WiiU game release and momentum would be premium now.

  2. Sir Isaac Newton of Judah

Mario Kart 8 just crossed that 1 million games sold mark. That Splatoon Squid ripple effect.

    1. pink0crystal0midbus

I thought it passed that threshold last year when it released. It says on Wikipedia that it sold 2.82 million in it’s first month.

    1. Jtz from Gad tribe

Oh you can’t be serious. For real? PS4 outsold Wii U for weeks with no games. Wii U needed a new game just to temporarily outsell PS4 in just Japan. By next week Wii U will be like 1000 units over PS4. After that barely above 10K and then back to 6k to 7K.

  3. Oh Splatoon is not a system seller….says the haters and the trolls

    Well y’all got EXPOOOOOOSSSEDDDDD!!!!! LMAO!!!!

    1. Oh sure because a system seller moves 17k units. Oh yeah all of the “haters” are eating crow.

Gtfoh, if anything this only proves that its not a system seller. The 100k + is good but it shows that Nintendo onced again fucked up and limited copies just to show that the game had hype and to make it “sell out” in Japan. The Wii U will most likely drop to 6k-8k by next week though.

      1. You dumb ass troll home consoles aren’t really selling that well in Japan anyway. What mainly sells over there is handhelds and mobile games so for a new home console exclusive IP to raise the sales of a home console over it’s handheld competition is amazing. My point was that the haters were saying that the game was gonna flop hard because of no voice chat and because it was too colorful and the art style was too cartoony but now they’ve been exposed. Now go play your overrated exclusiveless ass PS4 and pray for The Last Guardian to come out lol

        1. 144k doesn’t mean it won’t flop – if those numbers can remain consistent, then there won’t be an issue. But these days, for a big game, even a million units isn’t considered successful given how much money and resources go into game development.

          1. That’s true, if its worldwide sales, not just Japan, in Japan 50k in a week is considered big. Look at witcher 3 compared to Splatoon, and Whitcher 3 is a Playstation game that was super hyped, Splatoon is a Nintendo game, and is the first in the series so it has no reputation to cause it to sell well. If you look at all the factors Splatoon is a HUGE hit in Japan.

            1. For the number of units the Wii U has sold – eh. That’s debatable. Console game sales have dropped in Japan, so in that regard, 144k is an admirable number – but it doesn’t make it a hit yet.

              1. Who knows how much this game needs to sell to make a profit but I’m sure it will make a profit and it will sell 1 to 3 million maybe more in its lifetime sales

                1. For most big titles, of course the “exact” number isn’t known, but game development has become exponentially more expensive – the marketing on Splatoon alone was a hefty amount. It’s also difficult to make a prediction of “1 to 3 million” when how exactly are you justifying those possible numbers? But you did leave a wide enough gap open so technically if it sells just over a million, you’re right. But just over a million is, again (and I’m not sure why people still don’t understand this), NOT a hit, especially in this context for this kind of game. Since it’s an online game, server upkeep will also factor into the continued costs as well.

              2. In japan it kinda does, home console games aren’t big in japan(FFXV will be the only big one). The only game i really see sale big there are handhelds. Splatoon, doesn’t needed to sale way over a million, to be a success, beacause i doubt they put a triple A budget on the game. With the wii u’s install base, a million is still a good number

                1. And we won’t know that unless we know what Splatoon’s budget is, including marketing and other expenses, as well as server upkeep – it’s also a bit disingenuous to not think that they didn’t put a large budget into this game when it’s clearly one of their big titles they have been pushing for and hyping to a huge degree. I think a million units sold won’t push them to a profit with the game, but to each their own. And yeah, 1 million copies sold compared to about 10 million units for the console is fine – but that doesn’t make the cost of developing the game go away.

                  1. Pikmin on gamecube sound that much it was a success. I’m sure the budgets big, but like destiny’s, COD’S and many others. I’m sure the amiibos sold well adding to its overall profit, I feel for a new ip like splatoon its fine, it will give nintendo a bigger idea of how to approach the game next time

                    1. If Nintendo needs to offset the cost of a game with revenue from another part of their company, then that’s not a success. Each product should be able to survive on its own. If companies want to continue making products that are subsidized with their other products and they’re comfortable doing that, then they certainly have the prerogative to do so – but that doesn’t mean it’s a smart business decision, as it just ends up costing them money in the end. But hey, if Nintendo wants to lose money like that, it’s their money to lose.

                    2. Also, I don’t see the specific Splatoon amiibo selling as well as others – I’ve seen multiple copies of them in stores next to the regular Amiibo, because people don’t want those as much as the Jigglypuffs, Lucinas, etc.

        2. Well no shit idiot. We all know that home consoles aren’t that big in Japan anymore but even the PS4 pushes 45k units with an over hyped game, the Wii U is doing just about a third of that, and only 10k more than what its been doing without a new game. Maybe your little brain can’t comprehend what a system seller is, but selling 17k isn’t one.

Oh yeah, add additional information that wasn’t presented in your original comment and call me a dumbass for calling you out. Way to go fucktard, you sure know how to argue.

Now just to rub more shit on your face. When Toad Treasure Tracker released in Japan the Wii U did 14k, with almost no advertising for the game, that week, Nintendo did 14 thousand units, 14 fucking thousand units. The week Splatoon released the Wii U sold 17k, it moved 3 thousand more units with a shit ton of advertisement. Now go eat shit and think about what else you’re going to say.

      2. Jtz from Gad tribe

I gave it to blog back down to 6k after two weeks. If it was powerful like PS4 it could sell without games like Sony can. It’s more impressive a video game console doesn’t need games to sell compared to one that does.

    2. Jtz from Gad tribe

It’s too early to determine if it’s a system seller. Let’s else what happens next week and the week after that. GTA V is over a year old in still top 5 in the UK.

    3. System seller? Moving 17k consoles hardly makes a game that’s been as heavily marketed as Splatoon a “system seller”, lmao. I’ll assume the number will go back to its usual 6k-7k in two weeks at most.

      1. That’s what the fuck I said….” System seller “. You just can’t handle it when the Wii U is in a positive light. Funny how I hardly see you when there’s good news about the Wii U HATER

        1. ???
Are you even aware of what you’ve said previously? Literally quoting your comment:
“Oh Splatoon is not a system seller….says the haters and the trolls
          Well y’all got EXPOOOOOOSSSEDDDDD!!!!! LMAO!!!!”
          Says the haters and trolls
You were obviously implying that the “trolls” and “haters” saying that Splatoon is not a system seller are wrong, which makes you look silly, because it really isn’t. In Japan, at least.
Also, why wouldn’t I be able to “handle” the WiiU being in positive light? I’m not a pathetic fangirl who treats a video game company like it’s my religion. I just say what I think; it’s not my fault fanboys say the dumbest things as soon as they see the slightest “positive” report in relation to the WiiU, lmao. And yea, I really don’t think it’s a secret that I dislike the WiiU, it’s one of Nintendo’s worst consoles, in my opinion. I don’t see how any of that would change the fact of the things you’ve said being really silly though.

  4. Great news for Nintendo! E3 should help keep up the momentum. Xenoblade X, Devil’s Third and Fatal Frame are on my radar. Splatoon rocks!!

  5. Sony Emperor Xperia

Xenoblade Chronicles X didn’t even last long in the charts, that game flopped, didnt even move Wii U’s in the shelve, meanwhile Splatoon will be off the list soon, that game wont reach 1million sales in Japan, and this is the first time since launch that the Poor Weak U takes top spot, but it wont last, come bext week its the same cycle PlayStation 4 dominating the charts lol

    1. Moreover, Xenoblade X’s worldwide sales will most likely never reach The Witcher 3’s even when the former is released in the West. The Witcher 3 has a good chance right away to catch up on Xenoblade X’s sales in Japan. Week 22 of 2015 saw Xenoblade X drop from both MC and Famitsu charts altogether.
Famitsu hardware sales (week 22, 2015):
      3DS [all available models] – 1616341
      Wii U – 15787
      Vita – 13408
      PS4 – 11327
      PS3 – 2708
      Xbox One – 348

    2. Jtz from Gad tribe

You got to admit it though you know damn well no one expected a new IP to move Wii U units.

      1. Some of the people here actually thought it was going to. I mean look at them at top, they still think that the numbers of Wii U units moved is a good thing.

          1. Its sad that a Nintendo fanboys calls a Nintendo EXCLUSIVE, anime porn. Just goes to show that even those that ride Nintendo hard have no idea what they ride them about.

    3. Number 1- It’s OFF the SHELF, not IN the SHELVE.
Number 2-Splatoon WILL reach a Million in Japan, it’s just going to take longer than Mario Kart 8 did.
Number 3- The WII U has taken top spot a few times after launch.
Number 4-It’s BACK NEXT week, not BEXT week.
Number 5-I think you mean 3DS and Vita.
Number 6-How desperate of a Troll ARE you? Seriously, If you said that in front of a Wrestling Crowd, they’d be chanting-SAME OLD SHIT!!! SAME OLD SHIT!!! SAME OLD SHIT!!! Like they do with John Cena, except it would be 5 times louder and longer.
      Number 7-Have a nice day!!!

      1. his hands hurt due to his long sessions of masturbation, so he could not write more.
there’s hope for him and you know hope is tha last thing you lose, but in his case, it’s his virginity!
        hahahahahahahaha!

  6. Nobody has realized that Xenoblade left the list too soon… I’m sad about how that game performed in its homeland.

    1. Jtz from Gad tribe

I wasn’t suprised about Xenoblade. If Bayonetta flopped. I thought Splatoons was going to flop though.

  7. hahaha. So, the expected small boost happened – expect it to drop again in a week or two and be unsustainable.

        1. Because they said their PS4 exclusive lineup for E3 is sparse or do you know what ” sparse ” means. And Sony can’t be trusted anyway when it comes to their IPs because a majority of their exclusives have been dogshit this generation

        1. Because you fucking ponies are always trying to invade OUR gaming site with your mindless pathetic trolling. This site is for REAL Nintendo fans not bandwagon jumping ponies like yourself and Simply G

          1. You talk about trolling and yet, you brought up Sony for absolutely no reason! And you can’t call me a pony because I appreciate games across all platforms. Doesn’t matter if I don’t own the system. If I see a game I like, I’m gonna praise it. But whatever. Keep on hating on Sony if it makes you feel better. I don’t care. XD

  8. Jtz from Gad tribe

I bought Splatoons. I’m going to play it when I get home. It just looked so fun on that direct. I could resist.

  9. Jtz from Gad tribe

I didn’t expect Mario Party 10 to stay in top 20 this long. I gave it a week when it launched.

    1. Same here, considering Smash Bros for Wii U isn’t even on the chart anymore. Maybe Japan loves Mario Party more than Smash…

  10. It terms of overall, the 3DS line just BARELY surpasses the Wii U in Sales this week. By just 323 units. That’s amazing and an accomplishment for the Wii U.
Splatoon strikes and Mario Kart 8 continues to make money for Nintendo.

  12. Peanut Butter Kit Kat

Media Create Sales: 5/25/15 – 5/31/15, Splatoon was released on the 28th so that’s three days worth of sales there.

  13. irosas master puppet

XBO tearing things up with one game on the list ! Even more impressive is that they almost doubled last weeks hardware sales ! Way to go , that’s awesome !

  14. I’m just put the game in. Now it has to download. If it keeps needing to download, I’m going to need a hardrive. Too bad they were too stupid thinking 32gigs would be enough in 2008 for 2015 when building Wii U.

  15. If they thought of adding more power it could have downloaded faster. But Ninte do is stupid.
