RAD Hints At Unannounced Video Game Platform To Be Unveiled Soon, Nintendo NX?

Now this is pretty interesting. RAD the developers behind The Order on the PlayStation 4 have announced that they’ve been working on their game engine to support a number of platforms including the Xbox One and the PC. The development team also says that their engine and technology will work on one other unannounced platform that will be unveiled soon. Could it be the Nintendo NX? It could be Steam Machines, but they’re basically PC.

Since the release of The Order, we have been very hard at work to advance our engine and technology to a place where we can deliver our games on PC, Xbox One, PS4 and one other unannounced platform that you will soon find out about.

  1. What part of “We’ll show the NX next year” did the article writer not understand? The “next year” part?

    1. Good, this was brought up. I’m glad the readership can retain their memory, since sometimes outlets like this forget.

For example: In 2005, questions of backwards compatibility on the “Revolution,” despite Iwata confirming this at E3 earlier that year. He had to actually point it out at GDC because the press suddenly decided the VC incorporation was a reason to doubt Gamecube support.

    2. What part of Nintendo has lied to us in the past, do people not understand. Fucking Reggie told us that we wouldn’t be seeing a redesign 3DS a week before the XL got announced. Iwata told us we wouldn’t be seeing a Wii U and 3DS price drop weeks before they announced the price drop.

We don’t know when we will be seeing the Next console and I wouldn’t put it pass Nintendo to lie to us about it. Why do people think that Ninty would purposely kill of the sales on the Wii U by announcing the NX in advance?

  2. Yeah I think they’re talking about some kind of special Steam Machine that will be unveiled on the PC conference at E3.

    1. Doubt it, Steam Machines are basically windows PCs just using a custom Linux software.
Unreal Engine 4, Unity 5 and Cryengnine are already compatible with the Steam Machine because it’s just PC hardware, this is an unannounced platform so I doubt it’ll be a Steam Machine.

      1. Here is something you are missing. They are working on the or engine. Their engine may or may not be compatible with the steam machines. Just because other game engines work doesn’t mean theirs will.

        1. Something you’re forgetting, they said UNANNOUNCED PLATFORM… Steam Machine has already been announced… Epic never announce compatibility with Steam Machine but there are games that run on Unreal Engine 4 that are already running on Steam OS.

      2. The steam machine isnt a windows pc, a windows pc doesnt exist because windows is simply a software based operating system. Linux is also a software based os, windows and linux are COMPLETELY seperate from eachother in every way. All they would have to do is make there engine compatible with windows and linux and thats it, theres nothing unuiqe about the steam machine in that sense.
The ps4 runs off a modified freeBSD which is a linux distro, the xbone runs off crappy windows 8, the wii u and 3ds runs off linux just like every nintendo console has since n64. ps1 2 and 3 ran off linux too.
I really wish people would educate themselves, all these post about how computers and operating systems work pain me physically and mentally.

  3. Steam machine isn’t unannounced and it’s basically PC without windows… So any PC game that uses steam (every single modern day game) would work on a steam machine… I would assume

    1. Steam machine runs steamOS, a linux distro. You can install windows or even macos on it like any given pc, but steamOS isnt going to magically run windows based games. You can easily use wine to virtualize them though.

    1. I think they won’t announce the other platform until Nintendo either agrees to announce that the engine will run on their next console or they could be waiting until next year and this is sort of a teaser.

      1. I’m not saying anything about them not mentioning the name of the platform. Of course they wouldn’t straight out confirm it for the NX when Nintendo themselves haven’t given out any sort of substantial amount of official information about it yet. What I’m saying is, these developers said it’s a platform we will soon find out about, and since we will not find out about the NX soon, as “sometime next year” can hardly be considered “soon”, I personally think it’s somewhat unlikely they’re referring to the NX.

        1. But you and Tre802001 keep forgetting that the Steam Machine is already announced, meaning it won’t be on that platform either. NX isn’t even shown yet.

          1. Oh, I see! I assumed you were referring to the source MNN used for the article. I just checked the link you’ve posted, and you’re right – looks like there was some kind of misunderstanding, and those words indeed have not been said. Thanks for clearing things up. :)

  4. If this is the Nintendo NX then it actually gives me hope.
The Order, despite it being a big pile of crap did have the graphics going for it and if this unannounced platform really is the NX, then it could mean Nintendo might be one step ahead of the competition in terms of power.

    1. Better have AMD’s next generation CPUs then if they are abandoning IBM. In all likelihood, they probably will.

    2. “…if this unannounced platform really is the NX…”

An unannounced platform…that’s been announced? While the NX’s date, hardware details, & functions are as yet unannounced, the platform has technically been announced.

      1. Not really, you keep forgetting that unannounced normal means for something that hasn’t be shown to the public, please, show me images on the Nintendo NX… oh wait you can because they haven’t even announced it full yet…

        1. Who wanna spend money on damn …..NX. Nintendo already ripped us off with the Wii u Fuk nintendo and if u dont like it u can, kiss my duke ho.

        2. Touché. But ‘unannounced’ in the context of the quote could also mean a platform RAD has yet to announce for the engine, rather than an entirely unannounced platform.

  5. Even if we ignore that the NX won’t be revealed this year, how about this. There is no way they’re talking about a Nintendo platform because they’re a third party, and third parties don’t work on Nintendo platforms.

    1. Yet Cryengine is available on Wii U but Crytek aren’t making games for the Wii U… your logic is flawed.

    1. Unannounced.
Razer Forge TV has been announced already, and the Ouya 2 I doubt seeing how the company is in deep shit at the moment.

  6. Note “Unannounced” The NX has technically already been announced, but not shown off yet. So unless, for them, Unannounced means yet to be shown off, then it’s not the NX.

    1. Not really, when they mean “Unannounced” they mean as in a platform that hasn’t been shown yet or even has a final name. This could mean that the NX is going by a different name in the final version of the console.

    2. NX is just the project name and we know nothing about it except that it’s being developed. The platform itself that NX will turn into is still unannounced.

  7. if anything, i’d say we will see the new nintendo handheld before home console…… unless the NX will be both handheld and home ;)

      1. Ridley 4 Smash DLC!

Shocker. Considering you want every 3rd party game you like on the Wii U so you can have both good Nintendo titles & good 3rd party titles without ever having to buy a secondary console, I’m surprised you’d be fully against the idea of one day not having to buy two separate Nintendo consoles as well. If a home console & handheld console hybrid can produce games that aren’t hindered by the inferior handheld console, I’d gladly fully back that creation. Especially if I can get two consoles for the low price of one. If the Wii U & 3DS could have been a hybrid that produced great games, we wouldn’t be seeing Nintendo supporting the 3DS while apparently letting the Wii U slowly die.

  8. If it is the NX, is it possible that Nintendo already announced the specs to developers?

It does explain why Project Cars devs are aiming for it rather than the Wii U. And even if Nintendo does provide details of the NX on E3, it’s official announcement or probably full reveal won’t be until next year and a Holiday 2017 release will make it to the Wii U’s 5th year.

  9. Unannounced doesn’t necessarily point to a new console it could still be referring to the Wii U as unlikely as it may sound

  10. ‘Unannounced’ could mean a platform, like 3ds or vita, that they aren’t ready to commit to just yet, or they are jeeping it a surprise. I don’t believe it would be a BRAND-NEW platform – just a platform, that is indeed already out, that the developer isn’t ready to talk about yet.

  11. The only thing even slightly related to the NX that will be shown this year, is a small clip in the Nintendo Direct E3 that shows off a Link with obviously better graphical elements than the Wii U(but barely better than the ps4. I mean its practically the same).

This is a small node to gamers so they know the next Zelda game will be released on Wii U and the NX, like how twilight princess was on GameCube and Wii.

  12. It ain’t the NX. Nintendo said they weren’t showing it off this year. Besides Nintendo would be even more stupid to unveil a console this soon. They need more time in R&D. They also need to be smarter this time with this NX console. They need to identiy every SINGLE detail in Sony, Microsoft and smart phones. They can’t be stupid and act like there is no competition like they did building Project Café in 2008. That’s why PS4 surpassed Project Café in sales because Nintendo acted like it was no competitors.

    1. Nintendo didn’t have a choice.
They signed a contract, that three systems use very specific hardware from a manufacturer. These were the GameCube, the Wii, and the Wii U.

Now with the next system, it most likely will be using X86 instead of PowerPC.

      1. I highly doubt a contract would stretch to be 15+ years long. Especially in business when a lot can happen, it would be idiotic to sign on for that long if they are business partners. Workers, on the other hand, would probably be handled differently.

Nintendo always goes the proprietary route. They stuck with IBM CPUs because they offered advantages that they saw as being perfect for them and their business. But now some of those advantages are becoming disadvantages…. However they roll is however they roll. Nintendo chose to stick with IBM, and more specifically a ‘meh’ CPU, for the Wii U, so now they must deal with what they had dealt.

        1. Jtz from Gad tribe

Nothing wrong with IBM or Power 7. They were just dumb having the idea of making Project Café a little bit more powerful than PS3. Every new Sony console is a lot more powerful than their predesuccesor. So after comparing the power between PS1 and PS2, then PS2 to PS3 then PS3 to PS4, why would making a 2008 future product for 2015 a little bit more powerful than PS3?

      2. Jtz from Gad tribe

Why go to an X86? Nintendo is even dumber than I thought. Just make a 12 core power pc 9. After all I thought X86 wasnt efficient for gaming.

      3. Jtz from Gad tribe

Nintendo may have no choice with a contract. But the contract didn’t tell them they had to make a console barely stronger than a PS3.

    1. Jtz from Gad tribe

If they thought about the PS4 and how powerful it would be, we wouldn’t had heard about the NX at all.

      1. Nintendo needs to make games for the damn Wii U and quit talking bout NX their saying we shit on our Wii U owners….

        1. Jtz from Gad tribe

If they release the NX next year, I’m not buying it. Why because they don’t have enough experience in R&D and competition. Knowing them, NX will be on par with PS4

  13. Ridley 4 Smash DLC!

It seems a ton of people are ignoring the possible fact that what they mean by unannounced isn’t referring to a console a console developer is developing but a console they haven’t announced their engine will work on.
