Here’s What Sonic Would Look Like In Unreal Engine 4

Unreal Engine 4 is capable of producing some stunningly realistic visuals once developers have got a grasp on using the tools at their disposal. YouTube user CryZENx has used Epic Games Unreal Engine 4’s open world “Kite” environment and has combined it with SEGA’s spiky blue mascot, Sonic the Hedgehog. As you can see from the video below the results are both stunning and slightly amusing.

    1. Guys, unrelated but I got a Ps4 bundled with Batman yesterday and the Ps4 is AMAZING! Batman Arkham Knight is a truly phenomenal game and it’s just amazing and being a Batman fan it’s just orgasmic.

  1. Ahn, mixing a cartoon character on real world is akward. XD also the phisycs are realistic that his jumps are extreme. Realistic lighting like this really doenst allow this type of character to pop up also. But nice to see anyways.

    1. My favorite levels are all based around realistic locations in the Sonic series, go play the console version of Sonic Generations. Speed Highway, City Escape, Rooftop Run, Crisis City <3

        1. Do you realize that Boom is just a branch of the series? His modern design never went, think of it like Paper Mario.

          1. Mark my words, “Sonic Boom” Sonic is the new Sonic. They don’t release two games, an upcoming sequel, a cartoon series, and a toy line for a mere “branch” of the series. Rather than thinking of it like Paper Mario, think of it like when Nintendo said the DS wasn’t a replacement for the GBA. Yeah, right.

            1. Sonic Boom hasn’t even been out for a year yet, so I don’t think it’s fair to call it that. A very similar thing happened with Sonic Sat AM, it spawned a cartoon, comics, and a cancelled video game. When was the last time you saw a Swat Bot? The games don’t even sell well, and have a very bad rep. Why would Sega replace the main series with Boom? The only reason we have all this merchandise is because its main focus is the cartoon and they want to appeal to kids. Another thing, it’s not like we haven’t had non Boom related things, we had Sonic Runners, a movie set for 2016, and Sega said they’re doing something for his 25th anniversary while apologizing for the last decade, I somehow don’t think it’s going to be Boom related. Lastly, the DS was selling REALLY well, everyone loved it, that doesn’t sound like Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric.

        1. I’m an avid Sonic fan, and the number of people who like those games are smaller than you think. Plus Boom is the worst selling Sonic game.

    1. Awful design? If you’re comparing his modern design to his classic design, all they did was made his arms, legs, and quills longer, made him thinner and gave him green eyes. What’s so bad about that?

      1. the real sonic fans are the people from the 90’s, people who grew up with sonic and mario.
everyone used to love sonic. nobody wants that shitty sonic boom design sorry…

        1. The way he said it made me think he was referring to his modern design. “Still couldn’t fix that awful design.” His Boom design I don’t hate or love, I’m indifferent. I can see why people dislike it though. That real Sonic fan statement was kind of dumb by the way, a real fan of anything wouldn’t say it used to be good. They would still keep up with the series, still have hope for another good game. I’m personally pretty confident that the next game will be great, because after Sega apologizing, thay HAVE to make a good game. I still love the classic titles, Sonic 3 is one of my favorite games of that era. Just because I like the new games doesn’t make me any less of a fan, if anything, it makes me more of a fan.

    2. @ kahisys
      I agree to this.

      @ Brendan, ninjamonkey72, sonicgalaxy27, thestrangablog
      Respect your opinions.

  2. Nintendo…. make Donkey Country 6 for NX with the power of Unreal 4… watch it sell ten million copies… your welcome.
And yes, update the character models to match the breathtaking visuals.

    1. The original DKC trilogy was about the advanced graphics (and music I guess), but the new games seem to be more about the gameplay and level design (and music again).

    2. Donkey country lmao… I know its wrong, it just made me think of a game revolving around Donkeys. : D!

          1. Can you feel the sunshine? Does it brighten up your daaaaaaay?

Sorry, couldn’t resist bringing back horrible memories.

            1. Not horrible memories for me. As a kid I loved Sonic R and enjoyed it. Even at the time it came and I played it I knew the controls and other stuff about the game were bad but I still enjoyed playing it on my Windows 95. Lol

  3. I’m assuming this is supposed to look graphically impressive. However, it looks very ugly and does not fit the Sonic style. It’s just another lazy “fan project” that really doesn’t deserve any attention. If any of this were made from scratch, it’d be cool. But it’s all reused assets. I guess it’s amusing in how lame it is.

  4. I know this is isnt the article for it, but I’ve been out of internet for the past 15 days and the first news I get on my feed is that Saturo Iwata passed away. :'( fuck, I didn’t think it was going to hit me this bad but I’m literally in tears. I hadn’t agree with some of the decisions he’s made in the past but there is no denying what he’s done for Nintendo, let alone the entire industry. May a legend Rest in Peace, you will forever be remembered Mr. Saturo Iwata.

    1. Imagine how i felt when i got home drunk from the beach. I didnt even fuck my girl that night even though she wanted to go a few rounds. I said nope.

  5. Honestly I’m not even looking at sonic. I’m just staring at the grass and thinking, damn… What kind of beast setup do you need to play that

    1. Yea, exactly. My first thought was wow that looks pretty good! Second thought: now they just need to make a console powerful enough to handle it, cuz the PS4 and Xbone ain’t gonna. Still not perfect though, it doesn’t look anywhere near real life. 20 years in the future we will all think that it looks like junk.

    2. His setup will run you around $1500, which isn’t too bad in my opinion for a high end PC. Most of it isn’t too expensive, just the CPU and GPU.

He lists his setup in the description.

      ╔►CPU:I7-4790K @ 4.8Ghz 1.32Vc + RAIJINTEK Triton watercooler
      ╔►GPU: GTX 980 Ti EVGA Superclocked+ ACX 2.0+ OCed = 1366mhz core / 4100mhz Memory
      ╔►MB:Asrock Z97 Extreme 4
      ╔►Ram:8 GB Ram DDR3 2133 Mhz Ram G.Skill
      ╔►HDD:1000 GB Sata 3.0 6 Gb/s Harddrive + 2TB hdd
      ╔►PSU:630 Watt Thermaltake 80+ Germany
      ╔►Case:410 Phantom red

  6. With some work on the environment, polish up the model, and add some Crush 40 and/or Cash Cash, it could work. Not even kidding

  7. All I thought was 3 things:

    Damn, sonic is fast
Damn sonic looks and moves amazingly better than any game I’ve seen in him.
Damn, can we see other games on Unreal 4; aka, Nintendo games.

  8. If Sonic Boom has this kind of graphics but all the game play and glitches still remain on the game will it sell more?

  9. you know i feel amusing about this whole mess and the graphics you know unreal engine 4 is trying to make the games more realistic and see what the fans think of it i think this could work for the future sonic titles.

  10. All that room to run in and he still plays it like the Sonic games, constantly stopping and slowing down and looking around and jumping awkwardly. God it’s so awful!

  11. The Sonic and Mario videos are good in terms of environment, but you can’t mix Cartoon with a realistic environment, looks weird, ugly and doesn’t let the character breath. Using the power of UE4 with a cartoon style open world would be nice. This reminds me the first demo’s from Sonic for the PS3.

  12. *Here is what Sonic character model would look like in Unreal 4 Kite demo.
You could take a fucking pedobear, kite demo and say, hey this is how a pedobear would look like in UE 4.

  13. I think the problem is this looked really good as a still image but the video is full of stuff like jarring and incomplete animations happening in a field full of nothing.

  14. Big Red Button (former NAUGHTY DOG devs) should have used that for Sonic Bo– nevermind, We want Sonic Team!
