AMD Could Be Manufacturing The Nintendo NX Processor

It would appear as though Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) will be providing the processor that powers Nintendo’s next generation platform, the Nintendo NX. Venture Beat is reporting that Lisa Su who is the AMD CEO and president has said that they have won a contract which would see the company create semi-custom chip design in a deal which is estimated to be worth around a billion US dollars in sale over lifetime. The publication reports that Nintendo will make the leap from IBM’s PowerPC to x86-based (AMD and Intel) architecture.  AMD chief financial officer Devinder Kumar said in December that “I will say that one is x86 and the other is ARM, and at least one will be beyond gaming, right. … They [the customers] are going to announce it and then … you will find out that it is AMD’s APU that is being used in those products.” You can read the full story here.

    1. Yep, this means it’s either going to be on par or more powerful than the current generation of consoles (PS4, Xbox One and Wii U)

      1. Yea that last rumer of a underpowered system, I don’t see that happening. If they make it easy to port/publish with then developers can just click a few times and get their gaming working on NX. This would be big if Nintendo could make it easy for games to just be ported over, help build that library and get third party support back. Now if they would just focus on improving their apps/services and build improved versions of their old controllers. Don’t really want them to do something all that new other then maybe AR /VR , or a motion camera update to their sensor bar. I think they should sell a digital, and media versions. The digital should be a striped down model, and have no dick player, only comes with a classic controller/or gamepad. The media comes with sensor bar, disk player (with blue ray support) gamepad, classic controller. That way customers can buy cheap and then buy the additions, or just buy it with all the key accessories. I hope they also move to USB C, and every thing can charge using one cable, and everything can charge fast.

        1. Galactus The Planet Devourer

whats a dick player? I’m trying to think of a word that is supposed to go there.. did you mean disk player? haha

      2. Let me point out everything wrong with this clickbait TRASH. Note this is all from the original article.

It was never stated that Nintendo is involved in the deal.

The “semicustom” chip simply refers to how AMD makes all their gaming chips, as a combination between a cpu and gpu. It was never stated that the client is getting a custom chip.

AMD stated that their “semicustom” chips could generate a billion in lifetime revenue across ALL their products, not just one client’s product.

Sickr, you took a very clear article and deliberately distorted it by hacking bits and pieces together. You obviously knew you were distorting the truth, which makes you the most bottom scum in the reporting world. You are deliberately LIED to your readers just to create more web traffic! You must have learned from FOX news who is highly disregarded for having no integrity and misleading the public.

In other words, FUCK YOU SICKR.

        1. To expand, Nintendo not being identified as the client means that Sickr made up the part about Nintendo “making the leap to x86 architecture”. You sheep… Please please NEVER believe what you read on this site. Always read the original article.

          1. Anonymous Dropping TRUTH BOMBS OVER HEEERRAH.

But seriously, the line in the headline about “could be” says it all dude. I wasn’t so much interested in the article as I was with reading some of the comments. I read everything you people say lol.

But seriously seriously, until Nintendo comes out and says it. This is pure click bait. Anything “Could” happen, yes it sure could.

          2. Dude, your an idiot. Cry all you want to about sickr, but it’s painfully obvious that Nintendo is going to use x86-based architecture in thier next console, with or without this article. Your posting anonymous because you know when you are inevitably proven wrong, you get to avoid the embarrassment that comes with your stupidity.

          >>>If you want to fight Sickr, you must first defeat me, which unfortunately for you, is impossible no matter what you do>>>

        3. For you to anon-rage a blog, you must have some deep-seated personal issues.

I suggest you see help, or have a few shots of rum, because you really need to chill the fuck out. What…did this article personally offend your grandmother or something?

Sheesh. Complain about something useful…like how Nintendo needs to add VC to Splatoon. ;D

      3. To be fair, Nintendo just (maybe) said that the NX is not going to compete with the ps4 in power. That doesnt really mean it wont be more powerful, it just means they did not make it more powerful on purpose to directly compete…

    2. Yes, yay.
Because it’s easier to port a game to a console that runs X86 since other platforms use the X86.
I know lots of folks are against it, but it’s for the good of Nintendo.

      1. That’s right.
Plus, it’s going to use the newer batch of x86 APU which will most likely have a R9 300 series GPU built in.

      2. It really would be, better, but its going to make games eaiser to develop for, and use things like unreal 5 (a non ported version of the engine) it would really help in several ways

        1. Bottom line though, is that developers are more familure with working with it than ARM CPUs.
So they won’t complain as much.
Nintendo is having to learn what sony learned… don’t use hardware that is TOO different.. cause then you end up with devs backing away slowly. Or complaining in some way or another.

    3. Old information that tells nothing. AMD said this back in 2014. The article is a speculation article since the source was Venture Beat. No factual information that links NX to AMD chipsets. It is getting hard to trust or believe any gaming news. The word news is base on speculation and not facts anymore.

      1. PlayStation One ran on a GTE and In-House GPU
PlayStation Two ran on a In House developed GPU
PlayStation 3 ran on a Nvidia GeForce chip
PlayStation 4 runs on a HD 7800 chip

    1. They’ve mainly used IBM for a CPU before, they did use AMD for the GPU.

An AMD APU combines both CPU and GPU architecture into one chip, which is what the PS4 and Xbox One use.

      1. APUs have pros and cons though.

Pros being that you’re able to play on your PC with a APU and not require a graphics card and you can do everything on medium setting in 1080p.

Cons on the other hand, it’ll effect CPU performance because most of the APU is being held up by the GPU alone.

But, with the new HBM tech AMD have shown off, we could see APUs becoming more powerful than a standard CPU from Intel.

        1. Like I just mentioned, that’s all dependent on if the NX even uses a Zen APU. Which AMD has not announced using these APU’s in consoles that I can find. Only in PC’s.

As I also pointed out, all these APU’s for consoles are custom chips, so who knows what it could end up being exactly. I think it’s a reasonable assumption to assume the NX will also be using a custom chip, and this all coincides with the consoles over all cost and how much will it cost to manufacture all of this. So I think it will heavily depend on how Nintendo wants to go about it, whether it be the cheap route or the more expensive route.

Even then though, like I said, if it used the new Zen APU and the best hardware available, Nintendo is going to have to do a lot more than give people a powerful console. Nintendo fans want to be ensured this system will actually get support and a steady stream of games, that’s why the Wii U is selling so poorly.

Only time will tell. I mean if they’re going to be talking about it next year, I’d hope they actually talk about the hardware it uses for once. Since Nintendo has a very bad habit of always avoiding the details of their hardware in that regard. I’m praying it will be different this time around.

    2. If you think about it, they do all the set top box systems, so naturaly a chip being made for a gaming system, and plans to make a billion in income…. Sounds like its for Nintendo, which is the only system from the big 3 (that billion in sales income) that’s in the works. So 2+_=4 (solve for _)

        1. but the AMD realm is “good” as far as I know, right? or they are allies with the sonyans and xbots? maybe I just want a little hope for the NX! haha

          1. Nintendo Tetrarch Quadramus-NX

            >>>Sadly, we all come from the same source in one way or the other, except we were first and pure>>>

                  1. “Who would advocate for the beliefs and practices of Hitler?” Is what I hope you mean. Acknowledging history is important. Otherwise it repeats itself. My comment was in jest, but if you really think being “first” and “pure” is a core belief that has no negative implications, then I would say you should educate yourself on the psychology and and beliefs that led to the attrocities of the Holocaust. We are talking about video games, not human enslavement and extermination… But still, if your first reaction is to attempt to banish his name from the tongue of the internet(as if he were Voldemort or something), rather than to consider the possibility that there is a dangerous thought process developing from someones role-play persona… Get it in check. Hitler’s bad, and so is anyform of master race mentality mmkay?

  1. Is this good? I don’t know hardware all that well, so I don’t know if this makes the NX comparable to the X-Box One and PS4 or not or if it even gives us a hint at its processing power at all.

    1. Doesn’t really provide that much info, but the Xbox One and PS4 both use AMD APU’s. Other than that, this article doesn’t really provide much else to determine whether or not it will be on par or better.

      1. The new batch of x86 chips from AMD will be powering the “next gaming console” which will most likely use R9 200 or 300 series chips so expect a big increase in performance if Nintendo are using it.

        1. That really depends, unless the NX is using something like an R9 290 and above which seems unlikely given the cost. AMD also produces newer R7 chips also, so there’s that to keep in mind as well.

For instance the PS4 and Xbox One are on par with the R7 260 and the R9 270 honestly doesn’t have that big of a performance difference, they’re almost identical. The newer R7’s perform as well as a lot of the lower end R9 chips, which is what we usually get in consoles is the lower end stuff. And like I said, it’s only the 290 chips and above, that will show you a big difference in power, and considering the R9 290 costs close to $300 by itself, it doesn’t seem likely we’d see the same exact power in the NX.

You also have to keep in mind for people thinking it would be the new Zen APU, AMD makes semi-custom chips for consoles, which could mean it won’t be the same as a Zen APU exactly, especially depending on what Nintendo may want to do with it. It could use similar architecture, but it may not be as powerful as the ones used in PC’s. And based on how customized it could end up being, who knows if it will be a huge leap from the PS4 or Xbox One.

Also, I’ve heard nothing about AMD planning on using their new Zen APU in consoles. To my knowledge, they’ve only talked about using them in servers, desktops and laptops.

Also based on the Wii U’s architecture and the Wii, it also doesn’t seem likely Nintendo would put that much money into their hardware. Although I really hope they learned their lesson on that front. For what their hardware offers, in my opinion, it’s a bit over priced and the gamepad doesn’t excuse it even without the gamepad, I’d still consider it over priced for the hardware it uses. Gotta keep manufacturing costs in mind as well, and although there is plenty of new tech being announced from AMD, for Nintendo to use the best of the best would mean they’d have some pretty high manufacturing costs. Unlike Sony and Microsoft, Nintendo doesn’t seem so willing to sell their consoles at a loss, like they do.

Regardless, them using an APU can’t be a bad thing, but it will all depend on how the system competes with the current PS4 and Xbox One. People also have to keep in mind that this probably won’t be Microsoft and Sony’s last consoles, so who knows what they could announce in between then. Even if the NX used a Zen APU, by the time it launches, I can bet we’ll be hearing something from the other two which could totally eclipse anything about the NX, and it will be the Wii U’s situation all over again. Like I’ve said a thousand times, Nintendo ditching the Wii U so early, and already announcing another console that will likely be released in 2017, is really putting them in the same position they put themselves in with the Wii U.

They’re going to have to make some god like console, in order for people to want to catch the bait. And Nintendo is going to have to provide more than just good hardware this time around, a lot of people bought the Wii U just fine knowing it’s a weaker system, that wasn’t the problem with its sale though, it was the lack of games people wanted to see on the system that truly detoured them away from the consoles. Nintendo will really have to prove they aren’t all talk when they release the NX, otherwise I can see a lot of people not caring anymore.

So much to take into consideration. It would be wise for them to wait as long as they can to release the NX, but given the Wii U’s sales… Who knows.

      2. Nintendo could stick with power PC, but the change to what more powerful systems are using. And what developers prefer, and Nintendo knows developers and customers want more powerful hardware. It could mean its close to, or above, but I don’t see them putting out a week system for the third time, especially when it’s one of the big issues. The thing is it dues not tell us much, BUT its a BIG clue of it is real (and appears to be so)

    2. It can be good cause it means it will be easier to port to than the Wii U.
Easier to make games for as well.
Most developers are more familiar with X86.

      1. Peanut Butter Kit Kat

It will be easier and quicker to to churn out those shitty quick ports with with missing features. If miss those games, then it’s good news for you. But I wouldn’t hold your breath for stuff like GTA and Batman etc.

        1. The only reason Wii U ports were shitty were because of the difficulty porting games to it. PS3 suffered the same problem in its first few years. If NX has easy to develop for hardware, and Nintendo makes the right moves, third parties will easily make great ports for the NX.

          1. Peanut Butter KitKat

Except that’s not true at all, Platinum had no issues porting over Bayonetta from the 360, Criterion also ported over NFSMWU with no issues and even publishers like Ubisoft stated that the porting process wasn’t difficult or expensive.

Tiny teams and extremely short development time didn’t help Wii U, third party wise.

          2. The Wii U is basically a Xbox 360 with bit more of RAM. It’s easy to port, unlike the PS3, but no one cared since:
            – It wasn’t worth financially
            – PS4 and Xbone came with the same architecture as PC, so why the hell even bother with an old ass architecture such as PPC in a console that don’t sell well?

PS3 had a whole library of shitty ass ports but they all sold pretty well, so no one complained. Yup, not even the guys who bought Bayonetta, Bethesda’s games and etc…

        2. Nintendo could focus on quality like Xbox and say that either they have to publish on Nintendo first, OR the Nintendo version has to have something special. Nintendo could say that their version should have special content, or must be the full version.

          1. Xbox is nothing of quality especially when each and every console of the brand has technical issues and failures more than any console combined. Xbox = quality? Hell no. lol

        3. Then 3rd parties will be the ones that look like hypocrites if those games don’t come to the NX because they will have no excuses not to port them especially when the NX is most likely using x86

          1. 3rd parties will always have some other excuse.”Install base not big enough”, “It wouldn’t sell on the system”, “Nintendo fans don’t want to play these games”, Etc.It’s happened before

          2. Nintendo Tetrarch Quadramus-NX

            >>>We know for certain that the Electron nonsense will never support whatever console the empire makes, as for the rest, either they commit or they confirm their true nature>>>

        4. Maybe… you should stop being a fanboy for just a moment… and realize that the bottom line is that most developers are more familure with working with an X86 .. so getting a dev even to make something original for the NX won’t be as much of a pain now. It’s good news all around.

  2. As long as I get my Metroid and Fire emblem with the NX…I don’t care how powerful it is. Just gimme prime 4 dammit!

      1. It could be anyone releasing a video game platform. The big 3 are not the only video game platform creators. There has always been lesser know video game platforms that exist.

          1. If you trying to insult me then that was not good at all. you speaking of the android consoles but they are not the only consoles that are out right now.

            Wii U 2012 Nintendo Japan
            PlayStation 4 2013 Sony Japan
Xbox One 2013 Microsoft United States
Steam Machine Unrealeased VALVe United States and other third party hardware companies.
            RetroN 5 2014 Hyperkin
            LeapTV 2014 LeapFrog United States

As I stated, it could be for anything. It could even be for various VR devices or Hololens. Before you attack me, how about showing some proof to discredit what I posted.

    1. What else could it be for? Sony and Microsoft’s next gen consoles won’t be coming til 2019/2020 and if Apple is making a new console they’ll most likely be using their own in-house CPU processors and a GPU from the PowerVR line and since Sony is putting their PS Now service on Samsung tvs is rules out Samsung

  3. Yay for Nintendo gamers as well, because now those third party devs have no reason to ignore the NX like they did with the Wii U.

I just hope the NX is indeed what Wii are waiting for and not the “rumored console”…

  4. Peanut Butter Kit Kat

Anyone naive enough to believe that a simple bump in specs is going to lead to a flurry of 3rd party activity on a Nintendo system is going to be extremely disappointed.

    1. It’s not a “simple bump in specs”. It’s a transition to different processor, which has been widely used in the gaming industry, thus allowing third parties to easily release games on the NX. Do some research.

      1. Unless the architecture of the chip is very different, as was the case with PS3, or exactly the same as one of the competition, it’s not going to affect porting time much; it’s still going to take similar effort porting from Xone to NX as from 360 to Wii U.

    1. It doesn’t have to happen. Remember a regular cycle is 5 years. Sony & MS said they’d be running their consoles for 10. This means that NX can still come out and have a full generation and Nintendo would still be able to upgrade again with the PS5 etc (if they feel like it).

      1. Where did Microsoft and Sony say this? If I remember correctly, both Microsoft and Sony said these system will have shorter life cycles than seen with their previous consoles.

I know for a fact Sony said the PS4 will have a shorter life span than the PS3.

        1. They actually repeated the same 10-year mantra for both PS3 and 4, and of course PS3 is still selling. I’m guessing the PS4 will have a similar destiny, selling until 2023-2024, but with a successor being released in 2020.

          1. They said they have high hopes was all, they said given the fact of all this competition in today’s gaming market, that it is more likely they’ll see shorter life cycle because of this.

I mean it’s nothing new these systems still stick around afterwards, but I’m mainly talking about when they’ll actually announce and release a new one.

      2. That rests entirely on the assumption that the ps4s/xbo’s lifespan will last as long as last gen. If it doesn’t’t, Nintendo could be screwed!

        1. Let’s just say that the NX will release next year. If it does then it means that it will be on the market for at least 4 years before Sony and Microsoft release their next consoles meaning it will give Nintendo ample time to prepare a successor to the NX that will at least match the PS5 and the next Xbox in power. Nintendo necessarily doesn’t have to release the successor to the NX at the same time as Sony and Microsoft release their next consoles, they could always wait a year and that would give the NX a 5 year lifecycle. So I really don’t see how Nintendo could be screwed, even they do wait til 2017 to release the NX.

    2. It’s very possible. That’s one of my biggest concerns, but if Nintendo shows they’re serious about developer support this time around, and they can show they’ll have the games coming from them in a nice flow to boot, they should be fine.

Given the position they’ve put themselves in, it’s going to be extremely hard for them to ever beat Sony and Microsoft’s consoles on a hardware level. They may for a short while, just like they did with the Wii U vs. the PS3 and Xbox 360, but it won’t last considering the timing they have chosen release their consoles.

Unless, like I said, they choose to hold off and wait. But given the Wii U’s situation that doesn’t seem likely.

    1. You bet your ass it is. Because the PS4 and X1 have the same arch, they get most of the multiplats. Nintendo’s PPC arch alienates them from getting ports, and good ports at that. If Nintendo moves to x86, that’s gonna be a HUGE incentive for 3rd party support. No one like coding for PPC tbh, & No one’s gonna build a game in x86 then struggle to optimize it on PPC just for Nintendo, so this is a BIG deal.

      1. Peanut Butter Kit Kat

How is it going to be a HUGE incentive for 3rd party support when the vast majority of their audience is on Playstation/Xbox/PC?

Ubisoft have already said that the reason they’ve pulled back on Wii U is because Nintendo fans don’t buy Assassin’s creed, many other publishers have said a similar thing. Changing to an AMD processor isn’t going to change this.

It’s going to easier to churn out more Lego games, but you’re not going to see the likes of Mortal Kombat, AC, CoD, EA, Batman, Bethesda, GTA, Watch Dogs etc.

        1. This comment just makes no senses…. if the console is more powerful than the current gen systems third parties will develop for the system and if more people started buying the NX more than the PS4 then likely the NX will have people who were never Nintendo fans before.

          1. Peanut Butter Kit Kat

“if the console is more powerful than the current gen systems third parties will develop for the system”.

Except we all know that this wont happen with NX.

          2. IF the console is powerful enough.IF more people but the NX more than the PS4.But even with that,it still depends IF the NX install base even buy the darn 3rd party games.I doubt the games that these devs decide to put out for the system (which would probably be lazy ports of year old games, again)will sell enough for them to continue to support the system.UNLESS,Nintendo and fans give them a LOT of incentive to stay

        2. pink0crystal0midbus

Nintendo might be trying to buy back the audience that buys PS4 and Xbox Ones. Imagine a console that has Nintendo games AND amazing third party support.

That beats Sony and Microsoft any day of the week. All Nintendo needs to do is score some exclusive mature rated third party games and nature will take its course.

Nintendo is more than able to acquire exclusivity rights to Monster Hunter games, Resident Evil games, a new Megaman game, Sonic the Hedgehog, Bayonetta, AT LEAST. If Nintendo is able to get their hands on the next GTA, CoD, Battlefield, Assasin’s Creed and other EA games/Ubisoft games, then Nintendo could definitely bounce back with a powerful popular system.

All Nintendo needs to do is buy exclusivity rights and help fund/publish certain games and whatnot.

      2. Not like games are programmed in assembly (although some small parts might be). The instruction set (x86) used doesn’t matter as much as the architecture, or power, or size of the market.

      1. pink0crystal0midbus

Which is interesting, because if they are going with AMD, that implies they are trying to output power on par with Xbox One and PS4 (or even achieve power greater than both consoles). Would it be possible for Nintendo to beat both systems in power AND keep their console cheaper?

Maybe they are really confident that they can sell the console at a loss and will make a huge revenue off games?

        1. Nintendo Wii U also uses AMD graphics chip, just lower specs than PS4 and Xbox One. If they were to keep prices low, they would have to use lower-end graphics chip than possible PS5 and Xbox Two.

        2. “…(or even achieve power greater than both consoles)…”

If Nintendo does, I doubt 3rd parties or even Nintendo would take advantage of that greater power, depending of course on how much greater. Considering 3rd parties’ reliance on multiplatting, there’d have to be parity (unless, again, the extra power is just enough to boost minor elements, & easily so).

Would be interesting if there was a leap in power, but again, that would really only be tapped once the competition starts releasing their 9th gen hardware; I doubt publishers will release more powerful exclusives like they did w/ N64; they certainly didn’t do that w/ PS3, & they didn’t even treat it like PS2 (exclusivity & variety). Nor did they treat Nintendo like Nintendo, & they treated the PlayStation brand much like the Xbox brand. & while that untapped power could help Nintendo in 9th gen, it would likely peter out too soon to compete w/ the freshly 9th gen platforms.

Of course, I believe the only way 3rd parties can find success on a Nintendo console is by catering to the Nintendo audience. They apparently didn’t really have to worry about catering to the PlayStation brand as Sony themselves basically relied on 3rd parties & what they wanted. Whatever Nintendo’s next console will be, I think 3rd parties will treat it like Wii U: last gen ports for a different audience. Wii sure helped keep dev costs down, its highs sales #s kept optimism for software sales high, & yet Wii maintained 3rd party exclusives & many genres & franchises alive. I hope 3rd parties will return to their former glories 1st before returning to Nintendo. I’d hate to see Nintendo change their identity & sacrifice the core principles of home-consoles & console-gaming, especially when selling products will require more than just topping the charts.

        3. i have to agree on such noticed even if they can turn the profits around then that way they can make the console so cheaper and it can get the company a huge success and they are trying to beat off 2 companys that is way more superior and see if they can match there sells on there charts see how many games they sell.

      2. They never said it’s gonna be cheap. Miyamoto said that they want it to be ” affordable ” but I don’t think it’s gonna be cheap. They said the same thing about the Wii U and look what happened.

        1. Nintendo Tetrarch Quadramus-NX

          >>>As long as they don’t have a power draining controller again, they can make the next home console powerful and put a similar price to it as the Wii U had>>>

          1. You have a point Commander. As much as I love the Wii U, I really hope the NX doesn’t have any gimmicks. Nintendo makes the best exclusives in the gaming industry, their consoles don’t need any gimmicks……PERIOD

            1. Nintendo Tetrarch Quadramus-NX

              >>>And if by any means they want something unique, start with civilian games first and test it on them and make it optional>>>

            1. I don’t think that’ll happen again. Memory has become cheap so Nintendo could easily give the NX at least 250GB or 500GB or even 1TB of memory. I really hope they do

            2. Nintendo Tetrarch Quadramus-NX

              >>>Like I said, without a power draining controller, they could put more effort into power instead while keeping the lower price>>>

        2. you might be right i guess they are trying to fix there mistakes that they had for a few years what about the 3DS its cheap but i see what your saying so i guess the NX is not gonna be cheap for 100$ and 130$ huh?

  5. Honestly, in the grand scheme of things I could care less what hardware specs the next system has. Let me list some generational comparisons:
    1. Game Boy vs Game Gear- Obviously the original GB in the colors and processing department was way below the Game Gear. But the GB won that generation hands down, no contest.
    2. DS vs PSP- The DS ran on cartridges and the Vita had disks. The DS specs were way below the PSP. DS won hands down.
    3. Wii/PS3/XBox 360
While the 360 and PSP were fighting about specs and everything else, the Wii with its barely stronger than a Game Cube specs destroyed that generation.

The GB, DS, and Wii are three of the top five best selling consoles of all time and each time they were the lower spec to their counterparts. While MS and Sony fight over specs on the football field, Nintendo will once in a while create a new playing field completely. That’s better for everyone, especially gamers.

    1. “The GB, DS, and Wii are three of the top five best selling consoles of all time and each time they were the lower spec to their counterparts.”

The original PlayStation & PS2 also had lower specs compared to their generational counterparts yet sold much better, even despite their hardware retailing for more & development being harder.

      1. Which proves the point that more power or processing speed doesn’t mean jack in the grand scheme of things. If you make a good game no matter what it looks like or how fast it runs, people will play it. Look at games like Shovel Knight, Child of Light, and AVGN Adventures, hell even Candy Crush.

Also, a side note, PCs typically have the fastest processors and biggest memory of them all but when games get ported to PC, they are almost always defective or get released way after their console counterparts.

        1. Alas, it seems 3rd parties’ high dependance on multiplatting & more & more PC elements seeping into console-gaming (namely devving there 1st & a focus on photorealism), raw spec power has become a top priority for many platform consumers. Even w/ all the accumulated Wii U titles of quality, its sales are still not significant.

  6. well i dont see whats the big deal i think the NX will not be powerful enough to see the hardware design and see the console play Wii U games.

      1. Are you really looking for real prices or just commenting bs?
For the time Nintendo began their real production of NX an octocore APU will cost almost nothing, in fact for Nintendo creating a device like the ps4 exactly like that will cost to them almost half or maybe less than sony. Octo core/8gb/gpu. Believe me i’m more than satisfied with the ps4/x86 graphics power inside a nintendo machine, but hungry people will ask for more and i think ram its the only thing that you could increase to mantain low cost. So 12gb it’s not crazy to ask.
I just want the same power from ps4 and i’m sold for decades because i know nintendo will squeeze that machine and use all the power with all the stylized games they do, and That will be aaaaawesome. Please Understand.

  7. Not sure why everyone is assuming this will be a traditional home console that is intended to replace the Wii U. If the NX is in any way portable it will be using the ARM and not the x86.

    1. pink0crystal0midbus

Nintendo has already said that the NX is intended to be the next home console that will replace the Wii U. Of course, their next handheld could be linked to the NX in some form, like the Vita is to the PS4 (unsuccessfully of course), but regardless of that fact, the NX is definitely a home console.

      1. Peanut Butter Kit Kat

Reggie just said what we already know: “We’ve also said publicly that we are already hard at work on our next home console and that’s another element we’ll be talking about much later,”.

This wasn’t in relation to NX, obviously the media tried to tie this quote to the NX as it generatess clicks.

      2. Show me when and where Nintendo announced that the NX and they said the NX is the next home console and that it will replace the Wii U.

This quote does not say that:

“From a Nintendo perspective, we clearly have strength here in the Americas, we have strength in Europe and we have strength in Japan,” Fils-Aime said. “That isn’t necessarily true of some of our more direct competitors. We’ve also said publicly that we are already hard at work on our next home console and that’s another element we’ll be talking about much later.”

Well they did publicly announce that before NX was ever mention. Quote from Miyomoto

“It seems like we’ve managed to do that this year and people are very happy with what we’ve done on Wii U. For the time being, our focus is on the Wii U hardware, but Nintendo as a whole has groups working on ideas for new hardware systems. While we’re busy working on software for the Wii U, we have production lines that are working on ideas for what the next system might be.”

        1. ” If we started for Wii U now, it will likely take 3 years or so. So it will likely now be on Nintendo’s NX console. ”

          – Metroid producer Kensuke Tanabe

          1. Think about the site the quote came from. A site that has had many mistranslations. The fact about NX is it is a dedicated gaming platform and more information will be known in 2016. That is all the facts.

            1. If what Tanabe said was mistranslated then why hasn’t he come forth to clear up the confusion? Look at how fast Nintendo came forth and dismissed all of the Android OS rumors and besides 2016 would seem like the perfect time for Nintendo to introduce the successor to the Wii U given Nintendo’s historical track record of when they release their new consoles and the fact that the Wii U isn’t performing all that well

              1. For the quote from the site, have you heard the quote? The thing with site reporting game news is when they have an interview and it is not voice then we do not know if the translation is correct. Why would he need to address it? It is the English speaking media sites that is going on about the quote. Sometimes it is best not to say anything. Media will make in statement into what they want it to be. The only facts is what have been said. The NX is a dedicated gaming device and more information in 2016. Companies hear so many rumors that they probably laugh at them. At some of the companies I used to work for like Hewlett Packard, a rumor would come out and we would have a good laugh about it because people actually believe rumors to be true.

              2. Nintendo Tetrarch Quadramus-NX

                >>>They all love when the cattle starts believing in anything that can best be described as a vague rumour>>>

        2. From everything said, its doesn’t replace the home console or the portable. This AMD rumor is likely, as the processor that handles the games dedicated to the system only. There will be an ARM processor in there, it would make sense (also rumors upon rumor seems to push it that way too). This would handle the OS, it is the case for both the 3DS, DS line, and Wii U. It also makes sense with the Android rumors, and them making smart phone games align with something they are doing to use the ARM chip in that way. It would take less resources to port Virtual Console games. Also, I am finding the transfer of Wii games curious with all the announcements.

Nintendo has been dropping crazy hints at everything from Starfox to this system all year long. Its like they are telegraphing moves like how they did with Majora’s Mask and no one is listening.

Anyways the soonest we will know anything more about it is June 2016 and even then the soonest it could come is Fall 2016, but more than likely a rollout of 2017.

          1. A good example of what you said about rumor after rumor is the word speculation. All people are doing is speculating. Any news with the word gaming attach to it that deals with hardware is speculated to Nintendo. I only deal with official statements. Speculation leads to misinformation. Also, everytime a company is doing something they are not dropping hints to let you know they doing something. Example, all the speculation that hints were dropped in the pre E3 video Nintendo made.

      3. Pretty sure they only said it was a dedicated gaming platform and will be a brand new concept. Dedicated gaming platform doesn’t mean it’s a wii u replacement.

  8. I wonder what will happen with Nvidia now that Apple is using AMD’s GPU. Well, PC gamers know that Nvidia are superior GPU, especially in cooling.

  9. Lol at people still clueless about NX. It’s obvious it is a family of consoles, that being a handheld and a home console with forward (and some kind of backwards) compatibility, just like iPad, iPod and iPhone.
Iwata himself had talked about taking inspiration in Apple’s products, iOS, Android and all that shit.
