Video: Top 10 Things Nintendo Needs To Do With The NX

YouTube channel WatchMojo has put together an interesting video taking a look at what Nintendo needs to do to make sure the NX platform is a success. Most of the points are pretty much spot on including ditching the Wii branding and making a console that’s specification are on par with their competitors. One could argue that WatchMojo have missed out making the platform region free and also getting third-party developers onboard and developing hits for the platform.

10. Ditch the “Wii” Brand
9. Bundle a Normal Controller with the console
8. Options for Virtual Reality
7. Looser Let’s play Restrictions
6. Offer a larger native hard-drive
5. Graphics and Specs on par with their competitors
4. A stronger Launch line-up
3. Either a good port or none at all
2. More New Intellectual properties
1. Better Online Ecosystem

  1. I’m pretty sure they mentioned more 3rd-party support in one of those 10 points when I watched it.

As for region-free, eh I never cared about that stuff. It’s not like I import at all anyway.

  2. Nintendo Tetrarch Quadramus-NX

    >>>Options 7-9 are not mandatory at all and would only please the louder crowd, and the system will be bundled with whatever the new controller will be, however, make other controllers optional to use in every way>>>

      1. If there’s not an option for the gamepad I’m gonna be mad! The gamepad is my favorite controller! But maybe it shouldn’t be bundled with the system, just sold separately.

        1. The gamepad would a perfect add-on to the NX. I really like the idea behind the gamepad, but it definitely needs work. All I ask is for the gamepad to have extremely long range to the console so that you can play your games in different rooms. Hell, why not make the gamepad work independently also that way you can play handheld games on the go or even Nintendo’s new mobile games on the controller. I see that Nintendo are coming close to their portable/home console hybrid, but decided to play it safe with the Wii U…perhaps for the sake of pricing.

          1. Yea. The gamepad is great, but it needs improvements. In my perfect world the gamepad would be:
            1. Long range connection
            2. HD screen
            3. Take it on the go
            4. Slimmer lighter design
            5. Pressure sensitive Triggers like the Xbone
            6. Better mic and camera

If they could do that it would be perfect! In the Dev kits people got, they said it had a portable controller, and that you could also take it on the go. Maybe a better gamepad? Assuming it’s true, which I’m inclined to think, but I’m not getting my hopes up.

            1. All of those ideas are fantastic, but I won’t get my hopes up…yet. Who knows, maybe Nintendo has learned from their mistakes.

              1. If the rumors are true they certainly have! Plus they have in the past acknowledged why the Wii U is a failure, and that it was there fault. If they will actually fix anything, well no one knows for sure. But I’m sure they can’t be stupid enough to make another weak system. They made the Wii U weaker because that worked for the Wii, but they have already sort of acknowledged the fact that it was a bad decision. Plus the new president of Nintendo, was the guy who actively said that the Wii U was a bad idea and wanted to change it. Plus what did they do when the GameCube was a failure? They came out with a new console, with a brand new idea and struck gold, with the second best selling console to date. Whether or not you think the Wii was a good idea, it still sold like hot cakes. If they come out with a new idea that resonates with today’s gamers, then they could strike gold again. And if the recent rumors are true, I think they may be able to do that.

            1. Nintendo Tetrarch Quadramus-NX

              >>>I see, well I’m assuming the feedback they have gotten about controller options are deeply manifested into High Command’s operations>>>

            1. Nintendo Tetrarch Quadramus-NX

              >>>The empire is known for being highly unpredictable in many areas, maybe they’ll put a machine out there that is well powered up>>>

            2. It’s great for party games like Nintendo land, and such. It’s also good as a map and inventory like Windwaker, and Zelda U. And it’s motion controls (in my opinion) are PERFECT for shooters. If they upgraded the camera, and Mic it would be perfect for Skype and voice chat stuff (assuming they put voice chat in more games.) Also what I want though is a new pro controller. One with gyro built in, and a good mic built in. And I don’t think it has pressure sensitive triggers, so it needs that too.

  3. i think nintendo is working on the NX right now but i think the line up for the NX will be great also nintendo does has good partherships with sony and microsoft but sometimes they have help with them on making the 3DS so in my subject i was thinking that nintendo neeeds to push the graphics forward then any other graphics from the consoles and they always test and stabilize the games and consoles before they get ready announced there work that developers has work so hard on for a few years.

  4. Nintendo would be foolish to try and directly compete with Xbox and Playstation. Those guys’ brand favourability right now is just so superior to Nintendo that if Nintendo chuck a PS4+ on the market, it’s not going to get anyone outside of Nintendo’s base. These 10 points are largely just about how Nintendo can obtain some kind of parity with Xbox and Playstation. What a miserable, miserable failure of a plan.

If Nintendo are to succeed, then they need to figure out how they’re are going to make their console superior to the opposition. What are they going to do with NX that is going to make gamers feel they NEED to buy an NX. For me it’s hard to see how Nintendo can do that.

    1. I think the only way to do it is more synergy between handheld and console, which I guess they tried with the gamepad, but the connectivity is so spotty and short in distance when you try and walk away from the console that it failed. If I could have a WiiU downstairs in my living room and play the gamepad up in my bedroom, that would have made things different.

I think the VR thing is a little silly and I don’t see that as a necessity at all. As Nintendo said already, it simply isn’t there yet to be a part of their system.

I am going to miss the second screen for FPS multiplayer like in COD, because not having a split screen is really cool. Two video out HDMI ports would be cool, as I would hook up a second tv for multiplayer if I could.

N always talks about keeping the fun “in the living room” and that online play is not their main focus… or something to that effect. This has to not only change, but whatever they do to make their online play more accessible and fun/engaging, is to bring that living room experience into the online environment. If they can do that and do it well I think it will be something.

I hope to be pleasantly surprised if nothing else. A gimmick can work, like the Wii and the motion controls carrying over to the WiiU for me has been a success. It will be a shame to see that go if it does and also one of the missteps in marketing, not letting people know that hey, the wii remotes still work and there is more to do with the system but it all got lost in translation unfortunately.

  5. “Ditch the Wii Brand”

They should have done that during the Wii U.
All it did was cause nothing but confusion.

    1. Which I don’t understand at all.

Sony uses the Playstation brand on everything, yet everyone seems fine with it. Then Nintendo decides to use the Wii brand a 2nd time and suddenly it’s all confusing?

      I don’t get it.

        1. Considering the original Wii is one of the highest selling consoles ever, I highly doubt the brand is a “failure”.

I personally just chalk it up to people being morons. I personally never had an issue distinguishing the Wii from the Wii U. They’re as different as the PS1 and PS2.

          1. Yes because the Wii selling so well has really worked out for them now. The only reason why the Wii sold so much is because it appealed so much to the casuals.

If you have been following the news since when the Wii U was initially revealed, then of course you wont have any problems differentiating the two. However the majority of people may have no to what the Wii U is; which is why most think the gamepad is an attachment.

P.S you are right about theWii and Wii U being as different as the PS1 and PS2, that’s why marketing is so important!
            *cough*Wii U*cough*

          2. Everyone who bought a Wii realized it was kinda shoddy. There were a few good games, GC compatibility and a good home brew enviroment but it was a terrible console and brand. Also Sony has been using playstation since their first console, nintendo usually changes the name with new consoles as they’re not a successor to the previous one. Snes and Wii u are the only home console successors Nintendo has released.

      1. Because when you have the next console simply be an incremental number, like going from PS3 to PS4, there’s no confusion. PS4 is the new console. The problem with the Wii U was they didn’t market it properly. Not only that, but they expected to retain the other Wii users, including a sizable chunk of the casual and non-gamers they brought in, but the Wii succeeded because it sold a gimmick very well – the Wii U did not. All you had to do was show someone playing Wii Sports. If Nintendo were smart they would have launched the Wii U with Super Mario Maker.

        1. Rogue Master XenoRidley X3

Exactly. They forgot they were dealing with idiot casuals that need a number by the name to realize it’s a new device, so the shitty marketing is one of the reasons the Wii U is a failure. But there are fools that think a little profit is a success when, in reality, it’s just an overglorified failure. A little profit a success does not make. (I think I did that saying right.)

    2. Not just confusion. It also brought the weak-machine reputation with it.
WiiU wasn’t horrible tech, but the Wii name basically was like ssying, “remember the Weak Wii? I’m the same thing with s little upgrade”

      1. makes me wonder if the Wii U was developed long before it was released, but they trickled out the inexpensive wii first to see if it would catch on being non-HD… because it caught fire, there was no reason for an HD version so Nintendo got, maybe not lazy, but comfortable in what they had and figured that power and the ability for 3rd parties to easily develop for a console was not necessary. They would conform simply because the console was so popular… when Wii U flopped in sales, that went out the window

  6. VR isn’t going blow up the way people are hoping, so Far it cost way more then console which is already pushing it ( don’t know about sony’s but if it’s past 300 they are fucked)

  7. 9&8 are not really needed because we don’t even know how the controller look’s like and virtual reality is still in his baby shoes

      1. But that also means the device won’t be completely optimized for each platform, but rather feature hardware which works generally well on all, but probably not exceptionally good with each.
In comparison, VR headsets that focus on one platform only will be entirely optimized for the hardware of that one platform they’re compatible with, which could make it easier to develop for, or achieve better performance more easily.

    1. I agree. They just need to focus on a solid HD machine. VR can wait one more gen. Let Microsoft work the bugs out. I’ll be playing with hololens in about 3 years anyway with XB1. I’d just like a Vita-quality, HD 3DS that can be played on the TV as well.

  8. 10. wii brand should be a stamp for family friendly games. like not just E rating but something a family can play together

    9. actually I’m fine with the gamepad, if they introduce a new gamepad that would also be nice, one that’s slimmer, have multitouch, a digital stylus, OLED display, and maybe is more of a stand alone device (with all the new set top boxes, and smart home stuff it would be cool if it could have support for controlling your smart home, TV, set top box.

    8. sure, but unless its something ground braking like Microsoft’s HoloLens then they should just partner with oculos to have support for one headset.

    7. yes, but I think as they introduce sharing clips on miivers/youtube it well fix its self

    6. no keep price low, introduce a basic cheaper model and just let me use my old 3.0 hard drive I already bought for wii U

    5. I certainly hope so, X86, more power or on par with xbox and sony, and softwear that lets developers port games faster

    4. sure , but backwards compatible well be a big deal too, possibly 4K (honestly that would shut even sony up)

    3. Either a good port or …..better version

    2. pretty sure Splatoon got them excited for new IP

    1. sure but that’s natraly going to happen any ways

    1. Let’s Play may have nothing much to do with the console, but it’s something Nintendo does need to lighten up on.

It’s basically free advertising and many people on the internet love them. Nintendo kind of took a PR hit when they tried to crack down on them.

  9. I won’t buy it if ….

-my eshop and VC games don’t carry over

-it comes with a game pad with 1HR Batt life
-Has the name Wii on it
    -if it has gimmicks

  10. 11.) No region locking

12.) More diverse games/more games for the mature crowd. When I say this I don’t mean darker, prettier games, but games that aren’t JUST kid friendly. Yoshi Wooly World for example is a beautiful game, but way to easy to be enjoyed by older gamers (unless you want a casual game). However, games like FE have difficulty choices that allows all players to play as they please. Pokemon is way too easy and a difference in game difficulty (through different versions) would benefit both sides.

13.) Spin offs are great, but they shouldn’t come before a main installment, transform the series completely, or replace the original series. Examples: turning chibi robo into a platformer, making MP10 a luck based board game instead of a game of skill, Paper Mario: Sticker Star, no dedicated 3D mario, etc. AC: Happy Home Designer is a good spin off in that it came after a main 3DS AC installment and is doing well. AC:Amiibo festival will probably be great as well, but because there’s not a main AC Wii U installment everyone is bashing it.

14.) Don’t solely focus on amiibo or make them necessary to fully enjoy a game. (MP10)

15.) Bring GC games to NX as well as maybe DS games and GBA. Have them launch on the NX’s eshop day one.

16.) Have both local and online co-op in games. Especially in games like Nintendo land, and other various party games.

17.) Great games, with great concepts sell consoles, everything else are just contributing factors. I’m sure everyone would buy a decent looking Metroid game with great gameplay then an HD Mario Golf game. Interior over exterior. Substance over appearance.

    1. Rogue Master XenoRidley X3

More adult oriented titles would be nice. Metroid should become Nintendo’s mature title, not a fucking chibi game to entice family friendly nuts.

          1. the list basically says “hurr i want to do let’s plays”, I just said “I just want a console because of games, as I never use my consoles for something else and I want it to be a well spent money”, and you come and say I’m out of the human evolution curve. Pls.

            1. Rogue Master XenoRidley X3

He meant your position on the subject isn’t helping to push the industry to greater heights because if all you care about is the fun factor & simply playing games, you might as well just stick with an NES or SNES.

          1. How will I watch my fucking mouth if I’m typing? Pls think about my fucking fingers instead of these fucking brats.

            1. Fuck your fingers, fuck them, fuck off, and fuck the fucking fuckers! Fuck region locking, even though I don’t give a fuck about it, and fuck let’s plays, I prefer silent playthroughs. Fucking JEEBUS!

  11. I disagree with 9,8 and 7. I think it would be stupid if not a suicide if Nintendo will go for raw power. However here my 2 cents on what Nintendo should do if the NX.

Nintendo need to make sure the NX is compatible with the amiibo (it’s a very successful business).

The OS of the console can play android game and at the same time real video games. The console should have the capability to switch between mobile phone game and portable or home console game (whatever the NX will be) .

If region free is still a no no for Nintendo (will be a very stupid decision) make sure the game which come on the NX don’t have DLC for European market but a full game (like batman Arkham armor edition).

To make sure the Wii U owner want to buy this console, the gamepad as well as wii controller should be compatible with this console. In fact the NX should be able to output two gamepads. Again to win back the wii u owner the wii U games should be compatibles with the NX.

If Nintendo decide to go for power horse, the console should be able to output UHD resolution as well as outputing the graphic for 2 gamepads as mentioned earlier.

In term of marketing Nintendo should do way more effort. I want Nintendo to speak my language. I am not a child/teenager who needs to be protected against mature content. From Nintendo own survey , the typical player is a 29 years old man so why don’t see more bayonetta type of game????

here we go end of the rant/essay…. :-)

    1. Nintendo Tetrarch Quadramus-NX

      >>>And most importantly of all, whatever they do, make sure to know how to use the technology you put out there to its fullest potential and not some half-made mess>>>

      1. I really think this was probably the biggest mistake they made with WiiU…the name, marketing, game drought and carrot-sticking the adults all a close second.

  12. I don’t care about many of those, just ditch the Wii brand and give it games, lack of new ips wasn’t the Wii us problem, lack of old ips is and a lack of good games that aren’t tailored to the 80’s/early 90’s crowd. As a late 90’s/ early 00’s gamer I felt alienated on the Wii u. Miiverse also has to go, Nintendo needs to admit they handled it poorly and start something new from scratch. Region locked multiplayer has to go as well so I don’t have to import a us console

  13. Bundling a second “normal” controller with the consoles would be a nice throw-in for multiplayer fans, as well as the “core” crowd who essentially have no ability to change things up. I see it as a win-win (the only loss being additional cost). Perhaps a slightly more expensive bundle at launch, that comes with a “normal” controller as well would be a good option.

  14. 10 things, and…
    “11.) No region locking

12.) More diverse games/more games for the mature crowd. When I say this I don’t mean darker, prettier games, but games that aren’t JUST kid friendly. Yoshi Wooly World for example is a beautiful game, but way to easy to be enjoyed by older gamers (unless you want a casual game). However, games like FE have difficulty choices that allows all players to play as they please. Pokemon is way too easy and a difference in game difficulty (through different versions) would benefit both sides.

13.) Spin offs are great, but they shouldn’t come before a main installment, transform the series completely, or replace the original series. and…

    18) Trophees.

    19) More games like “street of rage”.

  15. One thing to remember is that the Wii U was announced a full YEAR before the other consoles were announced. One lesson to learn is that whatever console is announced, the others will do ANYTHING to surpass it in a concerted effort to undermine the first one out. Nintendo should never have announced the Wii U first. Once either console was announced, Nintendo would’ve known which direction to go. Then, maybe the third-party developers would’ve invested in the system.
