The GameCube Was Released On This Day In North America 14 Years Ago

The GameCube didn’t sell as many units as Nintendo probably expected it sell, but it did have excellent library of games from Luigi’s Mansion to The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. Today is the day that the GameCube was released back in 2001 in North America and I’m sure you have your own fond memories of the launch. If you’re still playing GameCube games then be sure to check out this list of the best games.

  1. Nobody wanted it when it was out, now everyone praises it. Just wait, nobody wants a Wii U now, but everyone will look back and say how awesome it was, like the hypocrites they are! GO WII U!!

    1. I can’t agree, simply for the fact the Wii U lacks so much of what the GameCube actually had, the GameCube had all those main games you’d expect out of Nintendo’s consoles and most of them much earlier on than the Wii U’s pacing. It might have failed, but it still at least had more games and especially the games people really wanted.

The Wii U is still far behind in terms of these main games, and with the NX on the horizon and being announced so early on as it was, it’s fairly obvious even Nintendo is trying to distance themselves from the Wii U. I imagine there wont’ be anything significant for it after Star Fox Zero and Zelda.

It has had its moments certainly, but it still hasn’t hit the mark for me with any of its currently released games, and to me, is in no way comparable to the amount of main games the GameCube did have that were in my opinion superior, and a lot of the games I bought the Wii U for (knowing the ones that released on previous Nintendo consoles) have been turned into spin offs, don’t have the meat I’m used to from previous titles, taking too long to be released, or are never coming to the Wii U period.

It isn’t a terrible console by any means, but unfortunately it was handled poorly, and it still hasn’t recovered in that sense.

I just don’t see how anyone could view it as the best Nintendo console, or even for that matter compare it to the GameCube, other than them both not being so successful.

      1. Gamecube didn’t fail, it made a profit in the end, just not as much as Nintendo wanted, just like Wii U. Just cause a console comes in last doesn’t mean it failed, there will always be a console in first, second and third, no way all 3 would ever sell the EXACT same amounts.

        1. Yea, and so has the Wii U, but it doesn’t change the situation of the console or the fact that neither the Gamecube or the Wii U has met Nintendo’s expectations, making them a failure in their eyes.

Which is what I meant. Sorry if that was not clear enough on my behalf.

And obviously, who would ever expect anything to sell the exact same amount? That would be pretty hard to achieve, unless it was done on purpose.

“Just cause a console comes in last doesn’t mean it failed”

This is very true, but for the GameCube and the Wii U’s case, that isn’t how Nintendo sees it. Like I said, these companies are about reaching a goal, every time they make a new product they have to set a goal that is expected to be attainable, if they don’t get to that point, it is simply considered a failure.

Did you forget when Nintendo had to halt the production of the GameCube just to clear their warehouses of them? So how is that considered am actual success, it clearly didn’t make enough profit, just like the Wii U.

You can also fail to deliver on a product in other ways than just sales too, which Nintendo has admitted doing with the GameCube and the Wii U. Which was another one of my points that I was making.

Regardless of all that, they still supported the GameCube better than they have the Wii U, even given the fact the GameCube could be considered to be in a worse situation at the time.

        1. One was for waiting for a few decent NON-GIMPED third party games that never came (Rayman included) and the second time was the drought problem plus the last E3 drawing the line on many things including no more hardcore games, no more decent third parties, multiple delays and lies of launch games, no more Nintendo games that people actually wanted and that fucked up thing they did to Metroid..last part is what enraged me the most and I finally grew tired of Nintendo’s shit.

            1. Okay. First time was some games that I really didn’t like and resold that console to make up that money and started over with that MK8 bundle. Last E3 pissed me off so bad that I quit, almost entirely.

    1. Hey! It was in our image Media Library. We used it on a previous article which linked to his GameCube controller artwork. Anyway, I’ve also added a link at the bottom :)

    1. I know that you’re trolling, but I can’t exactly ignore this for the millionth time. No matter if you are against or for any console manufacturer, I can’t imagine how people can even be seriously involved in actively hating on any console for “ruining the industry”. The more is the merrier, and consoles don’t just get popular for “reasons”. People wouldn’t be playing games/consoles if they didn’t have fun with them, and that’s the main purpose of gaming: to have fun, since it’s entertainment. Sure, there are bad/good consoles, but those consoles that are bad usually don’t make it in the end (CD-i, Hyperscan, all the failed consoles of early game console history, etc.; and they have little to no influence at all), and those that are good have obviously had success for being fun to play and are continuing their success (and they have had all good influence on gaming as a whole). So please, don’t waste your time attempting to get attention on the Internet by trying to troll (not to say I’m much better for attempting to share my thoughts). You have much better things that you can be doing.

  3. Wait the GameCube and the Wii u both have the same release date and they are both one of nintendo’s bigest fail’s…
If i was Nintendo i would never ever release a console anymore on this date

      1. Hey! the GBM was the shit lol I love that little thing, and I love how you could change the face on that little thing. Of course I was smaller back then, now I wouldnt be able to hold one, but I still had a blast with that thing.

    1. Yeah Gamecube games didnt take forever to debut also. Gamecube had the comtrollers, the graphics at the time, the Gameplay, it was small, had 3rd party, had RE0-4. Mortal Combat, XMan, Soul Caliber. Pikmin, Pokemon even though it was just specific Pokemon you could catch, Mario Super Strikers. It had everything we wanted. There was no drought.

  4. The main reason why PS4 is Number 1 is something I over looked not power but a trend. Society says it’s cool for a man to own a PS4. Yet Society says Wii U is for children. Therfore PS4 is the style even though the wii u has the better games. Someone showed me the real truth besides power. Peer pressure.

  5. Gamecube had 2 starfox games both good. Gamecube had Metroid, Gamecube had Melee had the start, Sunshine, Gamecube had True Crime Streets of LA. Gamecube was the shit.

  6. I own 2. Used to have 3 but gave one to my brother. I own a PAL and a JP one. I really like the orange version. I have many games too. Very underrated system but I suppose PS2 “won” for good reasons too.

  7. That was a sweet day 14 years ago. I still remember going to Toys R Us to buy it on launch day. I bought the indigo console and Luigi’s Mansion. If I remember correctly, I believe on that same day I saw the Pikachu edition Nintendo 64 console, and I wanted it SO bad. But I couldn’t afford to get that AND the Gamecube.

Fortunately, I now have that Pikachu N64 in like-new condition. I gave my indigo Gamecube to my sister, and I now have the awesome platinum Gamecube. One of my favorite Nintendo consoles. : )

  8. Huge supporter of and in the era of GameCube. It changed the way I played videogames I feel. It resonates very deeply in my soul in terms of comfort and growing. So many good fokkin games.

  9. The GCN was the last console that felt magical to me. Its unique controller, its shape, indigo, the mini discs, even the memory cards (SD is better, but not as charming), GBA Link, & of course, the games:

    Luigi’s Mansion
    Wave Race: Blue Storm
    F-Zero GX
    Super Monkey Ball x2
    Eternal Darkness
    Star Fox Adventures
    Animal Crossing
    REbirth
    REØ
    RE Code Veronica X
    RE4
    Killer7
    Wind Waker
    Zelda Collector’s Disc
    Zelda Master Quest
    Metroid Prime x2
    Tales of Symphonia
    Baten Kaitos
    Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance
    Skies of Arcadia Legends
    Viewtiful Joe
    Sonic Adventure 2 Battle
    Sonic Heroes
    Sonic Mega Collection
    Prince of Persia trilogy
MGS: TTS (absolutely loathed the length of the cutscenes)
    Alien Hominid
    MegaMan Network Transmission
    MegaMan X Collection
MegaMan X Command Mission (more a novelty than a good RPG)
    Soul Calibur II
    Sphinx & the Cursed Mummy
    Dead to Rights
    Crazy Taxi
    Burnout
    Chibi Robo
    Ikaruga
    WarioWorld
    Blowout (cheap but fun)
    Mystic Heroes
SSB Melee (the last entry I bought/the last time there was a person for me to game w/ in the flesh)
The possibility of getting Giftpia, Doshin the Giant, Raven Blade, Too Human, Diddy Kong Racing, Kameo, Sabreman’s promise in Banjo-Tooie of riding a “dolphin”, Dead Phoenix (w/ rumors it was a new 3D Kid Icarus)…

GCN was also the last home-console that really wowed me w/ graphics (the leap from the previous gen was vastly more noticeable than what came in 7th & 8th gens). 6th gen was such a great time to game, just before the industry lost its way…
