Smash Bros Producer Discusses George Lucas And Fan Criticism

Super Smash Bros producer Masahiro Sakurai has recently taken to his column in Famitsu to talk about original Star Wars creator George Lucas and the inevitable fan criticism that content creators are subjected to. It’s certainly an interesting read and you can check out all he has to say, here.

By the time this column has been published, the final Smash special presentation should have debuted, offering some new information. But, as of my writing this, nothing has been announced. Please watch it!

Around the same time, the new Star Wars film is going to premiere, something I’m also anxiously waiting for. I’m so excited! However, George Lucas is not directing it. He’s not even a producer. Lucasfilms, and the rights to the movies, were purchased in 2012 by Disney. This time, J.J. Abrams is directing. The reason for the buyout was “to protect Star Wars and Lucasfilms.”

Separate from that, in an interview in the American edition of Vanity Fair, Lucas himself apparently said “you go to make a movie and all you do is get criticized. And it’s not much fun. You can’t experiment.”

A truly serious problem….! He’s such a big name, and to hear him leave this franchise that has impassioned so many fans, a person who worked on the originals with his own hands, is incredibly sad and frustrating. Personally, George Lucas’s work is the work I would really like to see.

However, I truly understand his feelings. You could say my body is filled with these feelings. Making something, and completing it is a huge undertaking, and there are a lot of places where fans can’t see. It’s like building a house, but people focus on a single painting that’s hung up on a wall in one room, and fixate on it, and keep listing off their complaints of that painting. These situations are very common.

      1. Look, I have tried everything, just got this thing for my kid and Im about to kill everyhing in sight… changed security settings, re-entered time and time again, says connection successful… no bars, no eshop, no nothing

          1. we’ll see… I was hoping someone here could talk me off the ledge or help, like if it were a common problem. I work with computers for a living and this thing makes my eyes bleed haha

            Thanks though

    1. Wow. Great comment unrelated to this article. Not only that, but extremely mature. You teach your kid to talk like that?

      P.S. Mine works beautifully with the web. There’s probably a problem on your end.

    2. Jaded Ridley X3 {I'm not whining, you suckers... *cough* ..poor souls! I've just been driven insane by Nintendo failing me one too many times this gen!}

      Don’t mind, Brandon. He’s on the Nintendo Thought Police Task Force who have no real power since this isn’t Miiverse so they can’t false report or some other bullshit. They must protect Nintendo from any & all negative opinions & police what people think.

      Anyway, like Batman said, just take it back & get a different one if it turns out it’s the 3DS itself & not something at your house.

        NDCDFF (Nintendo Damage Control Defense Force Fanboy) Is what I like to call it.

    3. Mine works amazing. You either have a defective wifi card in the DS, which is unlikly, but possible, or you need to reset your router. It’s probably your network, not the 3DS.

          Why would Jaded_Drybones be called a fanboy for actually helping the guy with his problem by telling him what could possibly be wrong & not getting upset because he told Nintendo to fuck themselves?

        1. yes… exactly. I don’t think he knows how to work with actors and change the dialogue per the performances in rehearsals and such… whatever, though, this is something mystarwarsnews probably

            1. I enjoyed them to some level when I first saw them, but they’re becoming worse and worse for each time I see them. It’s so obvious visually that they’re all standing in front of a greenscreen, it hurts.

              The first one is just bad IMO. Of course, it’s not all black and white, it has some enjoyable moments, but I don’t like it. The second one I used to enjoy, but it’s almost as bad as the first for me now… I do enjoy lots of parts in the third one. It has some bad parts, but it’s my favorite of my prequels.

              4, 5 and 7 (and 3) are my favorite SW movies.

        2. The prequels weren’t bad. If episode 1-3 were actually made first then people would bitch that 4-6 were shit. People always says the originals are leaps and bounds better cause of nostalgia. We’re the originals better yes but the prequels were not bad by any means. The best jedi of all Quo Gon Jin was there and I unlike most people liked Jar Jar Binx.

          1. Normally, I’d agree, but this isn’t a case of nostalgia. If it was, then The Force Awakens would have had bad reviews and fans rioting. The prequels were bad because the directer was bad. God awful cgi, terribly given lines and needless story tie-ins.

          2. I see your point, as things like this does happen, but SW is the exception. When I first saw SW, I watched them from episode 1 to 6, and 1 and 2 were easly the worst. Bad acting, bad writing, bad CGI…

            As I’ve said above, I don’t think it’s all black and white; they do have some enjoyable moments, but they’re not very good overall.

        3. GL is very good at overseeing things. He created and executive produced The Clone Wars and oversaw nearly every aspect of it, but he left the screenwriting and directing duties to others. I honestly think it’s the best thing ever to come out of Lucasfilm.

          Regarding the prequels, people love to bitch about them endlessly, but there are only three things that are truly awful about them. Everything else is forgiveable for an action adventure sci-fi fantasy movie.

          First, Jar Jar is just in The Phantom Menace way too much. I honestly don’t hate Jar Jar, but he interrupts the flow of the film. He should have about 1/4 of the screen time that he does. Second, Anakin’s hissy fits and overall creepiness in Attack of the Clones, particuarly towards Padme, are really jarring. They make Anakin and Padme’s relationship really weird, and when he starts saying stupid shit, it really pulls you out of the movie. Third, Revenge of the Sith is the best of the three, but the opening act is too long and tonally inconsistent. This is one area where I agree with the Plinkett reviews. Many of the opening scenes are meant to be humorous to be point being slap-stick, and then Anakin goes and decapitates Dooku, which is actually really significant and quite dark. You’re left not really knowing how you’re supposed to feel at times.

          It’s worth noting that there ARE fan edits that cut the garbage out of the prequels. I’m a big fan of HAL9000 (for ep I and II), L8wrtr (for ep III), q2 (for the romance in AotC), and seciors (for the podrace) work (in that order). A lot of people have heard of the Phantom Edit, but many editors have come along and improved on that work.

    1. Nope. Brawl is better then Smash 4. Simply cause of the characters. Wolf alone makes Brawl better. And no stupid characters like Ryu and Cloud and Pac-Man and especially the Mii’s!

      1. Yes, legendary gaming icons such as Pac-Man, Cloud, and Ryu are no match for Wolf, the sometimes anti-hero of the Star Fox franchise. Haha, give me a break, you can like Wolf more than them, but dude, the other 3 are leaps and bounds ahead in popularity, recognition, and history. I have no qualms with Wolf, but it’s very silly to think your own personal values outweighs the worlds.

        1. i like wolf, he is not a clone of fox but i do agree that ryu, pac-man, and cloud are more recognizable and more popular and gives smash bros more diversity when it comes to 3rd party games, except there are two capcom characters, i get why megaman was chosen, to appease megaman fans for what capcom did to legends 3 (and the other 3 games cancelled), i dont know why ryu was chosen, maybe there was a good reason, cloud, maybe it was to restore the relationship between square enix and nintendo? or to “justify” bringing some dq and ff games to nintendo consoles, mostly the 3ds. pac-man was chosen because miyamoto wanted him in it (part of why he was chosen) and namco-bandai (bandai-namco, dont know which is correct despite both are correct) was helping and he made the most sense. so basically they are classics among the classics. do i care that wolf was removed? no but that doesnt mean i dont like him, he is difficult and fun to use.

  1. There’s a difference between people who criticize just to be loud and obnoxious, and people who criticize because they want the creator’s work to be the best it can be.

    Smash is/was supposed to be about Nintendo’s all-stars beating each other to a pulp, but nowadays almost any character can get in, even if they don’t have that superstar or legendary status (just look at Dark Pit), and Corrin definitely hasn’t attained that yet. That’s what makes me so vocal, because so many characters that are popular and have that history are skimmed over in favor of characters who lack those qualities.

    There’s always the next Smash, and mark my words, there will be one.

    1. the characters represent an all-star series, FE and KI have been here since the NES, plus there’s isn’t that many all-star characters left, which is why we are seeing more industry all-star characters

      1. The problem with FE is that every game features different characters- there’s never a constant lineup of the same characters, and very few are ever in more than one title, such as Marth and Ike. Marth gets a pass every time though as he’s essentially the face of the franchise.

        Top picks like K. Rool, Krystal, Imps, etc. do make constant appearances throughout their respective series, even if some of them haven’t been in the limelight in recent games (like K. Rool, who was the main antagonist of the original DKC trilogy but appears less frequently these days).

        1. Jaded Ridley X3 {I'm not whining, you suckers... *cough* ..poor souls! I've just been driven insane by Nintendo failing me one too many times this gen!}

          Not just the face but Marth was the first Hero/MC of Fire Emblem. Hopefully Shulk will be to Xenoblade Chronicles as Marth is to Fire Emblem for the Smash franchise.

  2. More or less, Star Wars is now in safe hands but giving video games rights to fucking EA is a much bigger mistake than having George Lucas direct the prequel while his twisted imaginations were drunk at the time to do it right like he originally did in the 70s.

  3. 💃I'm a Boss Ass Bitch💯

    Of course Sakurai feels the same. Making amovie is similar to making a video game. If you don’t stick to the formula that the shitty cry baby fans like than your gonna be criticized for the the shit that you conjured up. It’s your shit because you fucking made it and you can do whatever the fuck you want with it. Just like smash bros. Sakurai said fuck shantae, shovel knight, and the fans in general. This is my fucking game, I’m in control of the fucking dlc and I’ll do whatever the fuck I see fit.

    1. i would have like to see shantae or shovel knight or banjo-kazooie in smash but you are right, its his game and he can do whatever he wants. i can picture him being like eric cartman and saying “whatever, whatever, i do what i want”.

  4. HollowGrapeJ (Da Ji- Deadly Servant Of Lord Orochi And Cunning Fox Woman Of Whom You Are Simply Inferior To)

    I still haven’t actually watched an entire Star Wars film before. I REALLY want to see Force Awakens, but I dunno if I’m suppose to go watch the older ones first or something.

    1. Jaded Ridley X3 {I'm not whining, you suckers... *cough* ..poor souls! I've just been driven insane by Nintendo failing me one too many times this gen!}

      If you know absolutely NOTHING of Star Wars, watch the original trilogy (Episodes IV, V, & VI) first. If you watch the prequel trilogy (Episodes I, II, & III) or the first movie in the sequel trilogy (Episodes VII, VIII, & IX), perhaps the biggest plot twist in movie history will be ruined for you. In fact… FLEE THIS PLACE NOW BEFORE SOMEONE SPOILS ANYTHING!!!

  5. Sickr, just wanna say that, since Galaxy ported Freedom Planet to Wii U, it’s imperative to make an article announcement that Galaxy Trail just revealed it’s sequel (Freedom Planet 2) and trailer not too long ago which looks fucking EPIC. :3 Man I’m super excited for it already.

  6. Lucas was referencing the criticism he received in later years when making alterations to the original films and unleashing the poorly written, poorly acted, poorly everything prequels. If his idea of ‘experimenting’ was a whiny hero trying to woe his future bride with sonnets about ‘sand’, the franchise is better off without him. Disney has saved the franchise from the wrath of a dude who plopped a CGI Young Anakin ghost into the end of Return of the Jedi just because.

  7. I don’t understand that fanboy hate towards George Lucas, if it wasn’t for him Star Wars wouldn’t exist. Then he makes prequels so people can see what happened before and people complain and complain. For example, they complain about Jar Jar, yet in the originals which I just saw, C3PO and R2 are just as dumb and clumsy and add comedic effect, yet Jar Jar is hated. Then George updates and changes the movies, HIS MOVIES, to what he, THE CREATOR, thinks they are better, and to be honest the quality jumps super high and it doesn’t look like 70s and 80s movies, and he adds more extra scenes, but internet fanboys complain from the CGI to added scenes they don’t like not because they are terrible, just because it changes the originals, and there’s nothing worst than nostalgia fanboys.

    I don’t understand, he changed the movies to make them look better, to add and change things he probably wanted since he made them but due to technology he couldn’t, and to connect scenes better and to connect the movies with the others in a better way, yet fans hate him.

    Oh, and now there’s also a group of fans hating the new one, which I haven’t seen, but it looks to me that Star Wars is so geeky and nerdy, that all the geeks and nerds took it too seriously in the beginning that now nothing satisfies them and they think they own the franchise and George Lucas and Disney should do what THEY WANT not that the artist, director, or writers want. I know the movie aren’t perfect, but I don’t watch Star Wars to feel amazing or watch the most epic thing ever, or to watch the greatest movie ever made, just to have fun in a futuristic space war story and watch amazing fights and entertaining stories about that series, that’s it! People need to chill and watch the movies, and I think Sakurai feels the same, now Smash fanboys and nerds think they own the game, and no matter who is the creator, writer, or director, they think Sakurai should do what THEY WANT and HOW THEY WANT IT, instead of experimenting, adding what he thinks will be great and just creating what he as an artist wants. So, I think he feels very similar to George in this, nostalgia fanboys wanting it only their way and ALWAYS comparing it to the original or the one they fandom the most, in this case Smash Melee and in George Lucas case the first three movies, the nostalgia and extreme fanboy-ism ruins the fun for the artist and the other fans.

      While I enjoy & love the prequel trilogy and agree with most of what you said, sometimes you have to take your target audience into account when making your franchise, movie or video game. Especially when part of that target audience of yours is full of fans of your previous works in the franchise. Sure, you should bring in new blood to enjoy them, but you shouldn’t alienate the older fans, nostalgia blind or not, either. You have to find a good balance. To be honest, if there is anything to be upset about the prequel trilogies it’s the occasional bad acting which was most likely a product of bad directing and/or bad casting because the movie was actually full of very talented actors like Samuel Mother~L~Fucking Jackson & Liam Neeson and quite possibly the overabundance of CGI! And the movies do have their fair share of good acting, mixed in with the bad, & great moments that are actually on par with the original trilogy. And if I have to be brutally honest, the original trilogy isn’t without it’s own faults like bad acting or campy dialogue. It’s not on the same level as the prequels in some areas but not too far off, either. But sadly, at the end of the day, it is their product so they can do whatever they like since they can’t please everyone. Doesn’t mean they shouldn’t try, though.

    To Sakurai & to George Lucas: you’re both in the entertainment industry. Criticism comes with the territory. If you can’t handle it, find a new line of work. Everyone is different & opinions will always vary.
