Developer Reveals His Canned Wii U Game And Explains Why He Decided To Cancel It

Earlier this week, Brandon Sheffield of Necrosoft Games canceled plans to bring a game to Wii U as a result of Nintendo’s decision to fire Alison Rapp. The developer has explained the reasoning behind his decision in a lengthy blog post on Gamasutra, where he reveals that the canned project was a new version of a “small puzzle game” called Gunhouse. You can read an excerpt from Sheffield’s post below:

First, I should say that I do not know Alison Rapp. We’ve never met and never talked. My statement was less about her as an individual – it was in support of all those who have been harassed by the darker corners of the internet, largely because they were women.

I should say also that I am not a fan of her much-discussed essay regarding the sexualization of children in Japan. While I agree with part of the premise, namely that the West should not push its particular ideas of right and wrong on the rest of the world, I disagree with the core proof in her argument – that lower rates of child abuse and rape in Japan are indicative that pornography may be helping. Japan does have some of the lowest rates of reported rape and abuse, but those stats have been increasing as laws rise to support such claims. Many publications, including the Japan Times, support the idea that the lower rate of rape reportage is likely just that – lower reportage.

  1. developers having knee-jerk reactions to what Kotaku has to say (see: lie) about a situation.
Nintendo doesn’t fire employees for harassment, there’s a lot more to it.

This ‘revealed canned game’ looks a lot like a port of a smartphone game.

  2. LOL, oh how will I sleep at night knowing a Brandon Sheffield production will no longer grace Nintendo platforms! The man (child) that thought **his mother** stripping naked at a protest was totally awesome! What a surprise to learn he’s an apologist for a pedo supporter!

And Brandon: she wasn’t harassed for being a woman–she was harassed because she supported pedophilia, period. It was not a ‘simple’ case of her ‘merely’ commenting on Japan, but actually *supporting* the notion that pedophilia can be a good thing! So you can f*** right off, you lying little b****.

  3. While I (again) have a neutral stance over the things that have happened, I will say this:

I question the validity of his statements and do feel like he might just be using this as a way to make his games sell better through a political route. I also question if he really was making a Wii U game (or any game for Nintendo’s systems. Until he can prove those things, one can easily assume that he didn’t like Nintendo in the first place and used the situation as a perfect opportunity to attack and buff himself up.

As for what he says about things that Nintendo should be doing, I do disagree with his statements somewhat: while companies do have a responsibility to protect their employees, their responsibilities are just limited to within the company and not outside of them (unless the employee(s)’ attempts at protecting the brand of the company are backfiring or something); you can’t expect the company to be your own version of the Secret Service. Now, not-for-profit companies DO have that responsibility outside of their own companies and for-profit companies do have this thing called “social responsibility”, but they can’t do everything, and they need to make sure that their branding fits their ability to do these sorts of things. Right now, their “social responsibility” is things like using their games to promote healthy lifestyles and they’re being more open to developers by making giving out free Unity Pro licences and developing the Nintendo Web Framework (along with their game development seminars in Japan and Taiwan). I know that Nintendo has also helped some children’s hospitals and giving them game systems and stuff like that. That fits their brand when it comes to social responsibility, not this situation that we’re seeing here.

Furthermore, whether Rapp was in the right or wrong or whether Nintendo was in the right or wrong, I don’t really think that Nintendo trying to “defend” Rapp wasn’t going to do any good. No, really: what benefit would it create? Knowing the prospects of recent trends, I don’t really see ANYONE standing up for Nintendo if they did that; instead, the ones who would have agreed to it wouldn’t say anything. Because it’s easier to hate on Nintendo then to like them.

Anyway, personally, this sort of thing is extremely small and will blow away in about 6 months (tops; and that’s me being really conservative about it). Nintendo has had bigger things to worry about than this and they’ve SEEN worse than this, and yet they’re still standing. So why on earth would this be any different?

(Sorry for the long comment. Just stating an opinion here.)

-||She wasn’t fired because she is a human female nor because of her outspoken support for primitive rituals, she was fired because she was a traitor and belonged to the rebel alliance, period||-

-||And here is undeniable proof of her “dismissal”||-

      1. Isn’t that little harsh?
I agree he is more feminine than average man, and acting like tween on periods, but I’m sure he is still just a boy

-||I’m sure it was refering to the human female and feminism and not this Xbot||-

      1. No he’s just a stupid person. I’m very much in favor of women having equal rights with men. And that includes the right to get fired when you work for another company that doesn’t see eye to eye with yours.

    1. A SJW? When she was the one pushing for less censorship in video games?

And could you sound more like a fucking faggot please thanks

  5. Personally, this is actually giving me MORE reason to actually develop for Nintendo now, because these devs are only following the herd.

It’s kind of pathetic that they’re really only dropping support of the Wii U because of a Pedo Apologist and Support… that really doesn’t make them look any better and I’m glad their games aren’t gonna clog up the eShop with their horrid mess.

  6. Funny how all the GGers crying pedophile are the same exact people who are bitching about censoring the bikini outfit in the new Xenosaga. The fucking hypocrisy of it all makes me sick

    1. I really don’t want to get dragged into this again, but it seems you’re not able to distinguish between the real-life damage of pedophilia (particularly CP, which is what the conversation is about) and the victimless “crime” of showing a teenage character (meaning, not real) in a bikini.

Then again, you called the game Xenosaga, so I don’t think you’re that informed to begin with.

    2. Big difference between supporting actual touching of real 13 yr old kids inappropriately & supporting ogling a fictional 13 yr old kid. Oh & by the way, sexual attraction to a 13 yr old is NOT pedophilia since pedophiles are only attracted to kids that haven’t even hit puberty yet. To them, a 13 yr old is “too old.” Watch some Law & Order: Special Victims Unit so you can learn the difference since many episodes point out pedophiles don’t go after kids past 13. In fact, they stop touching those poor children & end up using them as bait to find them new victims. :/

  7. Don’t see where everyone is getting the “he supports pedophilia” from. All he says is he doesn’t like the west pushing its policing everywhere in the world. Japandoes happen to allow marriage for 14 year olds. So I guess all of you claiming he’s a pedophile just simply dislike anybody who doesn’t disagree with Japan’s laws. Pretty hypocritical if you live in USA which is a shitthole when it comes to the justice system, police and politicians increasingly wishing to and actually breaking your constitutional laws and getting cheered by supporters for that.

Also people in here judging the entire game based on the picture on top are probably just nintendo fanboys who will lynch anybody turning their backs on their precious underpowered wii u (which even Nintendo turned their back on since beginning, just saying). Bet if this game actually came out on wii u several of those people shitting on it now would play it and like it. Inb4 game turns out to be too similar to a Nintendo IP that hasn’t gotten an entry on wii u yet. Then you make petitions for the game to be removed from all stores and eshop… Happened once already.

      1. You’re half right. You got marriage & age of consent (sex) mixed up. “The Japanese Penal Code sets a minimal age of consent of 13.[44] However, the Children Welfare Act chapter 34 forbids any act of “fornication” (淫行) with children (here defined as anyone under 18 years of age)[45] with prefectures and districts specifying further details in (largely similar) “obscenity ordinances” (淫行条例) like adding exemptions for sex in the context of a sincere romantic relationship (typically determined by parental approval).[46]

The age of marriage is 16 for girls and 18 for boys, with parental consent, or 20 otherwise.”

        1. Of course, this is from wikipedia so someone could have tampered with the page. But Wikipedia seems to be pretty good at changing any false information trolls put down most of the time.

      2. *facepalm* Fuck! I’m sorry! Ignore that! If I had scrolled down a little further, I wouldn’t have wasted my time making those paragraphs as I would have seen you know what you’re talking about.

  8. What they are talking about PROBABLY isn’t even child porn. The lowest age of consent in Japan is 13 ( other prefectures it’s 14 or even 18 ) Of course you need to be 18 to even act legally in porn. Here’s the thing tho. Girls posing in bikinis ect isn’t porn. 13 year olds, or rather adults aren’t allowed to fuck under-age kids in Japan. It just mean those 13 year olds can screw each other ( someone 13-17 ) Unlike my shit country Sweden were 15 year olds can fully legally have intercourse with ANYONE 15 and over. Wouldn’t you be happy if your teenager started dating a 50 year old? LOL!

Cartoon characters on the other hand aren’t real. They don’t need to be protected so it doesn’t matter what fucking age they are said to be. Nobody takes loli and that kind of crap seriously, not even the people who like it. It’s just there because it can and it pisses me off how the UN and others waste time on trying to ban it when REAL children are getting raped everyday and married off to 45 year olds when they themselves are 12. But no people are cowardly little cucks who can’t say no because RELIGIONTROLLOL!

    1. You can see the same cases (15 year-old girls with middle-aged men) in my country too. Not like it’s a common thing, but you can see it from time to time. It’s revolting, and I don’t get why things like media representation get so much focus when this cases are pretty much real AND legal. Cart before the horse.

      1. If they really love this person, they can keep it in their pants, or keep their fucking legs closed if a woman, til the kid they claim to love is fucking 18. Of course, this point is moot if they were grooming this kid since they were 5 or 6 so they could eventually have sex with them when they did hit the legal age. But that’s a whole another can of worms right there, so this isn’t the right topic for that moral debate.

  9. I really dig this artstyle, I checked out his website and this game sounds cool, it’s a tower defense/puzzle game and it’s only .49 cents on the vita, i think i’m going to get. i guess his little pr stunt worked lol

    1. I fucking know, right!? I think this guy is in cahoots with the chick so they can both stay in the damn spotlight! Gotta make that 60 seconds of fame, well infamy in this case, last longer, right!? *right eye twitch*

  10. Fuck you, just fuck you. You were going to port a smart device game to Wii U and still think that this irrelevant piece of trash is important to us? This guy is not just a petulant idiot, he is a puppet.

  11. I’m sorry… but it sounds like Alison brought this on herself. I see Nintendo taking criticism for what happened, but I do believe they made the right decision. Seriously, it’s not her gender. Why are people thinking that? She was fired due to the fact that she had a job directly interfering with Nintendo that violated their rules. If this was a guy doing modeling shirtless in his underwear or whatever, it would result in the same thing. He would have been fired. And she sure does seem to have a lot of controversial opinions about child pornography censorship. This is not good in any way for a company like Nintendo that wants to have a family friendly image.

And this guy not releasing his game on the Wii U because (oh you fired Ms Alison no game for you…) is pretty childish. Don’t let your game decisions be based on your own personal opinions. Do you know how stupid that is? Now your customers (the few people that would’ve bought this on the Wii U btw) have to suffer all because you don’t like that Nintendo fired one of their employees?

    Cry me a river.

  12. I’ve never even heard about his shitty game until now. His game looked just like every other shitty generic 16-bit indie game. He thinks that cancelling it would make Nintendo regretful. What an asshole.

  13. No one (well most of us, anyway) don’t give a flying fuck! Take your mobile garbage somewhere else!
