Here’s How Nintendo Digital Sales Have Increased Over Time

Digital downloads are now a huge segment of the overall video game market so it’s interesting to see just how quickly digital downloads have taken off on Nintendo platforms throughout recent years. While the number pales in comparison to Sony and Microsoft, it is encouraging to see that digital has taken off with Nintendo fans even though we have had to wait ages for a dedicated account system.

    1. While I doubt that it’ll growth after that, let’s remember Nintendo is still playing “little brother catch up” with Sony and Microsoft in terms of digital content. They have a lot to do and fix in that time.

    2. Shame because I got a shitload of digital games on my 3DS & Wii U. But I bought into the bullshit lie from back in 2012 that they’d eventually give us a universal account system half way through this gen with the Wii U. Too bad I didn’t realize how full of shit Nintendo was this gen til 2015. :/ Or was it late 2014!? I can’t remember anymore since I’m not use to being screwed over by Nintendo in such a short time span.

  1. Well, this isn’t surprising at all. I expect Steam and Microsoft to have similar results. EA Origin, too (even though Electronic Arts should just close down, get their employees better jobs, and give their money back to the shareholders IMHO).

  2. I prefer physical but also like to have it digital for convenience. I am hesitant with Nintendo’s Digital offerings as I cannot just log-in to a new Wii U or another 3DS and re-download “My purchased digital games” as I can with my PSN games. So I am not surprised that Nintendo’s digital sales are a lot less. Who wants their purchases to be tied to a console??? Did the console buy the games or a human being? Once they change to a true account system I am sure digital sales will pick up “steam”.

        1. Nintendo need to learn to get with the times its simple but you dont understand that i dont want them to stay behind get up with or surpass the competition but it seems that is too hard for them

            1. Ha ha an app im talking about A POWERFUL ENOUGH CONSOLE TO GET ALL OR AT LEAST THE MAJORITY OF 3RD PARTY SUPPORT AND A REALLY GOOD ONLINE SYSTEM AND OTHER FEATURES like the ps4 and xbone its simple damn how blind are you kid you fuckin drone

              1. Not as blind as the dicksucker who’s desperately defending anything Sony and saying you wouldn’t care if they fucked up but Nintendo is shit because of their mistakes? Yeah you’re a dick sucker. AND IT IS AN POWERFUL CONSOLE YOU DUMBASS, IT’S GOT THIRD PARTY SUPPORT AND MOST LIKELY WOULD’VE GOT MUCH MORE IF PEOPLE DIDN’T THINK WII U WAS ANOTHER WII.

                1. Nope not defending when they are doing the best and microsoft is also better then nintendo but they may be doing overall the worst idk I WOULD HAVE TO RESEARCH THAT INFORMATION TO KNOW THE FACTS unlike yo retarded ass and ONCE AGAIN IF ANY OF THE 3 GAMING COMPANIES ON A DAILY BASIS OR WEEKLY BASIS AND POSSIBLY MONTHLY BASIS HAS PROBLEMS that continue to mess up my gaming experience then i will stop playing until the problem or problems are fixed and like i said before even if sony and microsoft had those problems of course i will still try to play and they are far ahead of nintendo so their mistakes may be easier to fix and since the wii u CANNOT DO AS MUCH AS THOSE 2 THE WII U PROBLEMS SHOULD BE EASIER TO FIX and of course IF nintendo would have explained it better many more people would have possibly bought the console but the console doesnt meet the requirements of the 3rd party devs thats why the system missed out on the majority of 3rd party games but o guess what the ps4 and xbone meet the reauirements or at least give the devs much more to work with to put their game on the consoles deny that you dumbass piece of shit

              1. In this particular instance, I agree with him. It is foolish to buy digitally from Nintendo! Sadly, I’ve been foolish with over 1o games on Wii U. :/

          1. looking at the data, yes digital copy co-exit with physical. However I don’t see digital copies taking over physical until 2020 at the earliest despite the push from companies (personal opnion with no data to back it up).

As for Nintendo’s eshop, I don’t see the point of buying a digital copy which is £5 to £10 more expensive than physical copy. I do believe that in one point New Super Mario Bros Wii U was more expensive on eshop than it was on Amazon.

In general I think those 3 needs to make it more appealing and more future proof for their customers. We are at the beginning of this trend but I don’t see Nintendo or Sony to keep record of a game on the cloud you bought for more than 10 years. Strangely enough I got my SNES out and play a amrio kart on it. I don’t think I will be abe to do that with any games I would have bought on PSN or Nintendo eshop.

          2. Well, all computer programs that you can buy/download from the internet used to be on CDs. I believe after a few years downloadable games are mainstream too.
