Yooka-Laylee’s Wii U & PC Versions Are Being Handled Internally By Playtonic, Xbox One & PS4 By Team17

Yooka-Laylee is being released on the PC, Wii U, Xbox One, and Playstation 4. However, Playtonic revealed that they won’t be porting the game over to every single platform on their own. Playtonic explained that they are internally handling the Wii U and PC versions of the game. Team17 is working on the Xbox One and Playstation 4 versions.

Writer Andy Robinson explained the reasoning behind this. They feel that they “naturally have so many backers who opted for Wii U”. The size of the team, meanwhile, makes it difficult for them to port the game to every console. Robinson said that the decision for Playtonic to work on the Wii U and PC versions is because “you can imagine from a developer stand-point, that porting from PC to PS4 and Xbox One is slightly more straightforward than porting to Wii U”. There is also a deeper reason behind the pick. They think “it feels right playing it on a Nintendo system to some people” and they want to “make sure that Wii U gets the right attention”. Banjo-Kazooie was brought up, Robinson saying that the there is “a lot of nostalgia” around the game and that it “heralds from Rare’s Nintendo’s days”. Robinson says that Playtonic are all “massive Nintendo fans as well”.

Yooka-Laylee is slated to release in the first quarter of 2017.

    1. Exactly. All of them have worked on some of the greatest platformers ever created that ranges from the Donkey Kong Country series, Donkey Kong 64, Banjo-Kazooie, Banjo-Tooie and Conker’s Bad Fur Day……so yeah this game is in good hands with these guys

        1. Yeah I have that feeling too. With one of the very best platform gaming development teams in the world behind this project, you can’t help but to feel that way

  1. I don’t mind the delay as long as it stays a WiiU game and not and NX game (of course, I have no problem with to coming to both!)

    1. I have a feeling that it could be coming to the NX as well. Business wise, it would make perfect sense since the NX is getting a lot of buzz and will be a brand new console

  3. I’m sure the game will be fine but I find it hard to care, I like collect-a-thons and all that but it almost feels unnecessary. Or not unnecessary I don’t know how to describe it, if it was more of a spiritual successor to conker than banjo I guess I would be more hyped because I feel like the whole “anthro videogame character is bad/adult” concept hasn’t been explored enough. I like it when it’s played for comedy like in conker and when it’s played serious (shadow), more people need to play around with that concept. Hopefully the worlds have a lot of secrets and the characters you meet are interesting enough to keep going.

  4. Here’s my hope for this game: They carry over the inter-map paths from Banjo-Tooie. It was such a genius concept for 3D platformers, and it didn’t really get explored enough after that.

  5. im guessing that they want to won on the wii u version just so it would be like in the old days when they worked on nintendo systems, as for the pc ver. my guess is that they dont want a poor pc port. im getting the wii u version.

  6. I’m extremely glad that Playtonic Games have finally brought back that special RARE magic back in the Super NES and Nintendo 64 eras. This is truly excellent to see the former employees of RARE in developing Yooka-Laylee for both Wii U and PC. Looking forward to purchasing it at the eShop in 2017.
