Technology publication Digital Trends is reporting that Nvidia has decided to cancel the Shield Tablet successor. The reasoning behind the decision is thought it to be down to the forthcoming Nintendo NX platform. Reports have suggested that Nvidia views the Nintendo NX as competition as the two platforms may target a similar market. The Shield Tablet successor was rumoured to feature a similar Tegra mobile processor as the NX.
Nvidia Canned Its Shield Tablet Successor Over Rumoured Fear Of Nintendo NX

Wait what? It it that good or bad?
It’s very good. 1) if Nintendo really is using NVidea processors. Then that means they probably partnered with Nintendo to produce content, port games, ditch the shield tablet and help design The NX for performance and being developer friendly.
2) it means the OS and SDK is going to be WAY more user friendly.
3) probably means NVidea wanted to ditch the shield and working with Nintendo means WAY sales if the next device (NX)
4) it well mean NX well support more gaming engines (like unreal)
It’s probably a sign Nintendo is not just buying processors from NVidia, but also a sig the two companies are working together in games/software /apps/OS.
In other words, it’s not so much NVidia canceling the shield tablet.
As much as the next shield being sponsored by Nintendo.
You do realize that this whole article is saying that Nvidia cancelled the Sheild successor because they are scared of competing with the NX? This is saying that Nvidia has nothing to do with the NX and that the Eurogamer rumor is false. Nvidia even said that they’re going to focus on cars and AI, so they’re not doing anything in the gaming industry. They haven’t even announced any custom design wins.
To answer the original comment, this can be either good or bad. This means that Nvidia won’t be supplying the NX chip, so it will probably be AMD because they’ve announced custom design wins for 3 game systems. The first one is the Scorpio, the second is probably NEO, and the third is probably NX. A custom chip from AMD would cost less and be better for Nintendo, so this is probably a good thing.
no it was not the entire articular. second it was speculation that they did not compete with NX. but since NVedia is the maker of the NX possessor then its pretty clear that the NX is basically a shield but backed by Nintendo.
which means Nintendo is letting Nvidea design the NX (for the most part) with Nintendo watching over the proses. this is very good news. this lets Nintendo be creative, but let a hardware/processor company handle that part of the device. they well most likely both work on the OS and software.
Nvidea wouldn’t cancel an internal device in fear of competition if they are the ones producing the processor for the competition. that makes no sense. no no if they decided to cancel the shield over NX it was because the NX is taking over the brand and the NX is the shield tablet successor.
this is good news because it means Nvidea is not just producing the chips BUT is also teaming up with Nintendo is make the NX the best it can be. this is VERY big news. as it shows Nvidea well investing some of its own time and money into the device. which could mean games, porting, engine support, apps, OS, and more.
How is this article news that confirms that Nvidia is supplying the NX chip? It’s the complete opposite of that. Nvidia is focusing on cars and AI, so if Nvidia is involved with the NX, the NX is either a car or a robot. There is no evidence supporting Nvidia helping with the NX. AMD seems a lot more likely because AMD has always supplied Nintendo’s chips, so why would they stop now? They also have announced 3 custom design wins for game consoles. Two of them are Microsoft and Sony, so the other one is either Nintendo, or a random game company that doesn’t exist yet.
intel makes a variety of things out side of CPU. but they still focus on CPU.
Nvidea has a bottom line of GPU. they do other things as side business. the car element is SO low on the totem pole. and IA is software related. (nothing to do with robots)
https://mynintendonews.com/2016/08/12/amd-has-won-an-order-for-the-nx/
also yesterdays AMD story was over a year old and was miss reported (they updated the artical saying so)
the AMD chips were for Xbox one S, scorpio, and PS neo.
The AI they’re working on has to do with self-driving cars, and I’m not talking about the AMD story from yesterday. They said they have 3 custom design wins for game consoles after the Xbox One S was released, so that isn’t one of them. The third one is either Nintendo or another game console from a company that no one knows about. There is no evidence supporting Nvidia supplying the NX chip. The only evidence is Eurogamer’s rumor and they’ve said Nvidia would be supplying the 3ds chip and that was completely wrong. They also have said that Mother 3 was being localized and that was wrong. The Eurogamer rumor is just as credible as any rumor from a random guy on the internet, so I don’t know why you would believe that over actual evidence supporting AMD making the chip.
The 3DS thing wasn’t completely wrong. The dev kits used Nvidia tech, they just partnered with DMP later for the final build.
no that story was before xbox one S, and they said only 2 were for gaming systems. (they still provide the Xbox one S chip but it was not part of that announcement.
we shall have to here offical word at all if any company providing chips, Nvidea, Snap dragon, intel, TI, samsung, LG, AMD or other. BUT more stories collaborate with the Nvidea chips.
no evidence of AMD other that they have two gaming chips. BUT we already know they are for Neo and Scorpio. so nothing supports NX either way.
how ever if THIS story is true. then it supports the Nvidea chip for NX. shield is powered by android, they are not worried about the NX competing with shield tablet. the only reason they could cancel it, is if they were working on the NX with Nintendo and saw no point in having a dedicated system if the NX would basically take over for the shield so i would be redundant to have two of the same thing by the same people.
The Xbox One S CPU chip isn’t a new AMD design win. It’s the same chip as the XB1 has. The GPU is overclocked, but that is it.
There is still one AMD design win that hasn’t been revealed yet. Enter the NX.
Nvidia Tegra X1 (or X2) is not the SoC that will power the NX. Nintendo still has a contract with AMD and they have since before the GameCube.
The source. (direct interview with Microsoft)
“Digital Foundry: There was some confusion at E3 about faster hardware in the Xbox One S to enable 4K and HDR. This says to us that you’ve either tweaked CPU/GPU clocks or unlocked the deactivated compute units on the GPU. What is actually happening there?
Albert Penello: This is a great question. In the hectic environment of E3 it’s not always possible to get into the level of detail necessary to give a complete answer. We stated that the SoC is the same as Xbox One while giving developers access to more power for HDR. The key is that we did not want customers to expect any change in game performance for existing titles. This has caused people to ask more detailed questions which I’m glad we have time to get into. The SoC in Xbox One is the same design as the previous processor. Same GPU, same number of CUs, same memory, same CPU.”

When Universal reboots their monster cinematic universe, I hope, instead of rebooting it, they use the Brendan Fraser Mummy movies as part of that new universe. It would fit well with their goal to have a more action oriented Monster Cinematic Universe. Let’s just ignore the events of the 3rd movie & bring Imhotep back. It would be interesting to see if he’d be good or bad because of how the second ended.
||You mean after this current reboot? Then yes, the Fraser human’s Mummy movies had everything you want from an adventure ride…||
||Tom Cruise just doesn’t fit…||
Wait, what? *looks it up & finds The Mummy (2017 film)* D: NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
||At least we’ll always have the Fraser ones, which will never be beaten by any reboot…||
If this Mummy reboot is going to be part of the same universe as Dracula Untold, it explains why they have Tom Cruise in it since he’s been in a ton of action movies. Dracula Untold was supposed to be the start of a rebooted Universal Monsters Cinematic Universe which was going to be more action oriented than horror oriented. The reason why is because Universal wants to compete with Marvel & DC’s cinematic universes.
||At this current state, they do want to include it and wants to do some reshots so it fits into this universe…||
It’s also why Dracula was so fucking powerful in the movie. I guess they want Dracula to be their version of Superman. xD
Applying Proper Context To A Misleading Headline: Nvidia did not disclose their reasoning for discontinuing the Shield brand. All we know is that they’re not producing any successor model.
its not necessarily the end of the Shield brand, jut the end of the tablet. the home/TV system well most likely still be around. how ever depending on how well this partnership goes (which by the sound of this artical, i would say its a VERY strong partnership) so the home version of the shield might end up being taken over by the NX home element.
THE NX STRIKES FEAR IN THE HEARTS OF HUMANS
Hmmm… i wonder…
Does this mean that they know something that will probably sell from Nintendo and decided not to compete? (If the rumor is true that is…)
I am sick and tire of rumors… when will we get our real news from Nintendo?!?!! Dx

Isn’t it a bit dumb to cancel something when they don’t even know what the NX really is yet?
Unless they do, or at least know enough to know that it is a bad business decision to put out another tablet or mobile device that, with all the others out there, might have only found a niche in the gaming realm, but with the NX coming out, and Nintendo making this device in such a way that it can play more games, such as those on mobile and others by more 3rd party developers, that the Nvidia brand simply can’t compete with Nintendo in terms of gaming. So in that respect, it screams that Nintendo is more than likely putting out a tablet like device, and with Microsoft and Sony not having one of those devices, Nintendo will swallow up the dedicated hand-held mobile device, but with the ability to also dock at home, which, unfortunately for Microsoft and Sony, is where the industry will be heading if the technology continues get better, smaller and faster. I am not going to say for sure that will happen, or that the gamble to be the first one to make a mobile device dedicated to gaming first that has the type of tech that is of the first class variety (assuming that is the case and Nintendo doesn’t fuck this up) will ultimately pay off with wii-normous success, but it definitely has a chance. can’t wait to see what this damn thing is already.
Just hurry up and release it so i can buy it damn it… i need a new NES in my life
APU and GPU and Tegra and Nvidia and all that stuff… I have no idea what any of it means haha.
||It doesn’t matter what it means, what matters is their use…||
I don’t even know what their uses are. I know very little about computer stuff.
An APU is an Accelerated Processing Unit. Its pretty much a CPU and a GPU combined. It makes it easier on the end user because you dont need a GPU (which is a graphics card) intel has been doing it for a while, but AMD is the one that adopted the name.
A CPU is the Central Processing Unit, lets call it the brain. You send information to it, and it sends it back. The stronger the CPU, the faster the information travels back and forth.
The GPU is the Graphical Processing Unit, (graphics card.) The stronger it is, the better the graphics look.
Thats as simple as I can make it.
As for Nvidia, thats the company’s name.
And tegra, thats the name of Nvidias CPU name. Its a mobile processor.
Wow. I actually was able to follow that. Good explanation. Much appreciated.
Cpu, gpu, psu, ram, mobo, and hdd are like the curse words of pc lol even if you arent into Pc’s, youll hear those enough that eventually you just pick them up in conversations.
Look at me. I’m learning! Haha
There’s also the simplest explanation for the cancellation: the previous product did not sell well enough.
Agreed. The market wasn’t there and not enough money was made to warrant an upgraded version.
Plus, Nvidia is out o that market now.

Nintendo NX = Nintendo Nvidia X1, maybe?
The same mistake?
