There’s A File Size Difference Between Breath Of The Wild On Switch And Wii U

Nintendo haven’t really mentioned any differences between the Wii U and the Switch version of Breath of the Wild, but the file sizes suggest there is at least something. According to the official Breath of the Wild website, the Wii U version is only 13GB compared to the Switch’s 13.4GB. It certainly isn’t a massive difference, but there is something separating the two versions of the game.

    1. That wouldn’t really change file size since those things are generated through the engine. It’s probably more land assets like trees. Possibly just more full landscaping. But it’s possible the switch version has just bonus content.

It could be DLC that’s incentive for the switch version, and is paid DLC for the wii U version.

  2. The switch has no games lmao not worth spending 300$ on a system with no games. List of switch only games that cant be found on another console or from last generation.

    – 1,2 Switch
    – Has Been Heros
    – Snipper Clips
    – Super bomberman R
    – Puyo Puyo Tetris

I’ll be waiting till after Nintendos E3 before i make the switch to the switch if theres any better games that is. Oh by the way come at me failboys though i dont care what you all 10 year olds think.

    1. Whats amatter kid offended ? I have enough games to play between my PlayStation 4, Xbox-1 and my last gen backlog. Go live on that nintendo hype train 49 days you’ll be complaining about nothing to play

      1. Certainly not the best launch lineup, but if your talking about exclusive games announced in general, then Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is noticeably absent from your list – and that game is HUGE if its anything like the last games. If its not to your taste, fair enough, but for fans they wont run out of gameplay quickly.

I also think its odd you are saying you will wait for “”better games””, despite none of the new stuff announced being anywhere near to getting reviews yet.

      1. Mario Kart don’t make up for shit, it’s an upgraded port of a game that’s dead. It had a few more spurts with each DLC release, but within a week of both releases people stopped playing again.

If Mario Kart 8 Deluxe doesn’t sell well on Switch, I hope Ninty freaking thought of letting people play with those that own the Wii U version. Sure it doesn’t have certain characters that the Switch will have but that’s why you put a feature that blocks the use of characters in races the Wii U version doesn’t have. Or they could make a separate online mode called Wii U where people don’t have access to Switch characters.

          1. That’s a good idea, I didn’t even think of that. Sadly I don’t see them doing it, but I think they should whether it sells good or bad. I’m not sure if I will even get it, I think they need to give Wii U owners a discounts if they had the game. Most of us already bought the game and both DLC packs, and ten new costumes aren’t really worth the $60. That’s over $130 if you got the U version & DLC & Switch version. The game is fun, but nowhere near worth that much lol. They should be able to use the club nintendo accounts to prove if people bought the stuff, just an idea. Not everyone registered theirs, and some may have gotten rid of theirs, so you can’t prove if they had it, but most people who got a U & are getting a switch probably still have their U. Maybe they could ask for the serial numbers to prove ownership? As for the game itself, I don’t know, take a picture with you holding the game to prove it lol. Long shot but it’s an idea lol. I’m sure we won’t get any discount, but it would certainly be nice and deserved.

Since we can link our NNID to our Nintendo Account, there should be no need for taking pictures or anything to prove ownership since the NNID, and by extension Nintendo Account, should have some kind of digital record of it since you can redownload any games you bought from the eShop that you might have deleted for one reason or another. I linked my NNID to my Nintendo Account as soon as the thing was available.

And a discount would be nice since I did get the game digitally. *facepalm* Craaap! I didn’t take into account physical buys of the game when I said that stuff in the upper comment!

              1. Shoot all my games are digital haha. I did add it for club nintendo if they were still accepting points at the time mario kart came out. I always added my games since I started using the service like 6 years ago.

With Wii U & 3DS, I only bought games I was never gonna get rid of digitally or games that don’t get a newer, better version a year or two later. The only reason I bought Mario Kart 8 digitally was because, unlike WWE 2K games & other such types of games, Mario Kart usually only gets 1 game per console.

      2. And zelda don’t make up for it cause it’s a long overdue game that should have come out 2 years ago. They delayed it and gave us nothing but droughts on wii u so they could prepare for switch. They have nothing to show for it but party games, upgraded ports, and the long overdue game. Oh and splatoon 2, which after the controversy of the 1st one and how it tore apart the nintendo fanbase, probably was the worst game to go with.

    2. Replying to “TrueGamer”:

Offended? No. You’re certainly entitled to your opinion (so long as we all keep it in clear perspective that that’s all the more your post is), and if your view of the Switch is unfavorable, then it’s unfavorable. Fair enough.

Although I do have to say that you do come off a tad ridiculous for choosing this article about file size differences between versions of Zelda of all places as your venue for launching into a tirade against the system.

And before you dismiss this as just another “failboy” “failboying”, consider: I have 40 some game systems ranging from a Pong clone that predates the Atari 2600 all the way up to the current crop of systems and a DIY gaming PC, and while that does indeed include every Nintendo system made, it also includes all Nintendo’s major competitors.

The only eras where the Nintendo system was my definite favorite were the NES, the GameCube, and the GameBoy. Other generations were either a) definitely a competitor (like the 16-bit era, preferring BOTH Genesis AND TG16 to SNES) and the current generation, where XB1 is my favorite….well, PC, probably, or b) a matter still uncertain, such as N64 vs PS1 or 3DS vs Vita.

Also, while I’m indeed extremely excited and optimistic for the Switch, and do intend to buy one, we simply don’t know enough about its full specs and performance capabilities for me to really say I’ve formed a fully-orbed final opinion about it. It still leaves a lot of room for potential disappointment.

Oh, and I HATE fanboyism, having even written a 60 page long series of articles on it and it’s impacts in particular on the 16-bit console wars with my sights most fully aimed on guess who….NINTENDO fanboys of the era! I also run a video game music podcast where guess what….music from Nintendo games are no more prominently featured than any other platform (gasp). In fact. If anything, I am having to fight the urge to oversaturate my shows with Sega stuff.

So I think your attempts to neutralize my critique of your post as simply mere “failboyism” would fail to rise above “laughable” territory.

Truth of the matter is, I think you’re simply a great big butthurt, and you simply chose this article to decide to projectile diarrhea your butthurt all over all of us. It’s cute, really. In any case, like I said, you are fully entitled to your opinion, and I even share in a small measure of your apprehension, though for totally different reasons.

But if you’re that anti-Nintendo [quote unquote] “TrueGamer”, then that raises a far more interesting question yet: what the heck are you even doing here in the first place? What kind of colossal waste of life it is to spend who knows how long trolling comment sections of a product you don’t like when you could….I dunno, be playing games you do like, you know, like a “true gamer”, “TrueGamer”.

I’d say “go home and be a family man”, but that may be giving you too much credit. Or do you actually have something of value to say on the subject at hand or different file sizes, in which case, the floor is yours.

    3. Puyo Puyo Tetris was released in 2014 for the Wii U, 3DS, PS3 and Vita. It was released later on for XO and PS4. Japan only mind you.

At least Puyo Puyo Tetris S is a launch title in Japan. We get both the Switch and PS4 versions later this year localised. Doesn’t help the Switch’s cause at launch here, mind.

  3. 13gb only? Good. I’m using pendrive to install Wii U games, so i don’t need to buy another pen drive. Can’t wait to pre-download this game and play it March 3rd.

  4. The Switch version did look like it had better textures but Maxwell supports ASTC which a much better texture compression than S3TC which PCs, the XBO, PS4, and Wii U use. I’ve done tests with it and most of the time you can easily make a texture half the size of its S3TC version with comparable quality. Even if they were trying to match the same quality of go a little higher quality there would be at least a 16% file size reduction with ASTC.

I mean if they use a texture with 4 times the resolution and a 2bpp texture that it will still be overall larger but it didn’t look like that many textures received a bump.

  5. Omega Kalas Ridley X3 (Greatness Awaits at Nintendo Switch & Sony PlayStation 4! Come join us in the Light of Darkness!!)

The Switch version will most likely have access to HD Rumble. Not sure if that would increase the data any, though.

  6. While I’m not entirely sure why the size difference between the two, I think the most interesting point brought up in the comments here has been that even with the extra stuff that’d go into the WiiU version for pad support, the overall file is still smaller.

Another user explains that the Switch’s architecture would, if anything, make “all else being equal” a smaller file size, and not a bigger one.

So, while I certainly don’t pretend to be an expert on this generation of hardware, the only possibilities I see are either some sort of bonus content, or else relating to the superior graphics presentation.

I’m going with one of those two! :-)
