When Super Mario Odyssey and Cappy were revealed some drew similarities to Kirby due to the fact that Mario’s cap allows him to transform into whatever he throws it at and gain its powers. Nintendo’s Kenta Motokura was questioned about this in a recent interview with Waypoint and said that Mario’s newly gained ability wasn’t specifically influenced by the beloved Kirby. Here’s Mr. Motokura’s answer:
In this game when you throw your hat at something, you can become that thing. I know that Kirby had a similar power in past games—did Kirby influence you in the development of this game?
We weren’t specifically influenced by Kirby necessarily, but we were thinking, “oh you want to jump higher or swim faster,” so we implemented that into the characters.

Kirby eat the enemy or get powers.
Mario enter in the enemy mind.
Completely two different powers.
Kirby copies a being’s powers. Mario uses the actual being’s powers.
I hope the only people who wasted their time on such dumb crossover art were ten year olds on devianart or someone who didn’t put their heart and soul into drawing it.
There’s like no similarities.
At all.
Banjo kazooie, duh!
Oh the transformation by Mungo. Well but that’s magic of course.
