Sonic Mania is certainly sending shockwaves around the world as it is now the highest-rated Sonic game in 15 years. Although the title is sure to please the 2D platformer fans out there, it’s best not to get your hopes up for extra content. Takashi Iizuka, currently the head of Sonic Team, was recently interviewed by Gamer.jp and when asked about DLC for Sonic Mania, Iizuka said that there are currently no plans to bring it to the game.

To me there is nonsense to bring DLC on a game that is complete. It feels like an old Sonic game so just leave as it be.
They only have to fix some issues on the Switch and then is all ok.
That’s fine. They just have to fix the bugs present in all versions of the game. That’s really my only gripe with it. I’m surprised at some that I’ve seen. I was watching a friend play UFO chase, and suddenly the UFO started going backwards on the track and let him take the emerald lol.

Still, does this game need DLC? I just downloaded it but haven’t started playing yet so I have no opinion either way as of now.
Can you already play Sonic Mania as any character? If not, that’s some good idea for DLC right there for people that might want to play as Knuckles or Tails with their unique abilities.
Yes, Knuckles and Tails are playable right off the bat, no need to DLC them into the game.
What about Shadow, Rouge, Silver, etc?
They’re not part of the classic era. But Amy, Vector, Espio, Charmy, and Mighty could be playable.
I think they can? I thought I saw Tails flying and Knuckles punching and gliding in one of the trailers.
Now I would LOVE to play as Silver (he’s been my fave for like 10 years, I’m a sucker for characters with telekinetic abilities), but I doubt we’ll see him, or other characters like Rouge, Blaze, or even Shadow. Amy Rose/Rosy the Rascal is the only other character I can feasibly see being added as she has a sprite set the designers could go off of.

Go ahead and throw in some new characters or do whatever you need to do, but a full game with new levels is the next step!
