Nintendo Says In Statement You Can’t Play Super Mario Maker 2 Online With Friends

We found out earlier today that Super Mario Maker 2 will not allow you to play online with your friends, you can only play with random players. If you want to team up with friends you will need to play locally. The news was first reported by NWR and GameXplain has chased it up today with Nintendo of America who confirmed to them that this is indeed the case.

“This is true. As the game is now, you cannot create friend lobbies online. You can only play online with randoms. You can still get friends together and play with local play, and you’re free to play with four players on one Nintendo Switch system. You can also still challenge your friends to your creations and take on their designs through Course IDs and having them follow your Maker profile.”

  1. I hope they rectify this a little bit later on as it’s not exactly the best move when Nintendo want to bring more people into the online subscription.

I’m still waiting to be able to play replays in smash with the option of changing characters.

    1. “I’m still waiting to be able to play replays in smash with the option of changing characters.”

      How does that work?

You either play replays or change characters, you can’t do both.
I mean it’s not like you can record a replay and then edit the video(s) by replacing the used characters with characters who WEREN’T used.

      It makes no sense.

      1. I believe he’s referring to swapping perspectives within replays. e.g. if you’re playing as mario against sonic the replay tend stop framed around mario. I think he wants to be able to swap perspective to nay other fighter in the match.

      2. For example: if I play against someone and I’m using Ridley (and they kick my ass) I wanna then go for a rematch with the same opponent, but I want to use my main ( link ) and kick his ass.

    2. “For example: if I play against someone and I’m using Ridley (and they kick my ass) I wanna then go for a rematch with the same opponent, but I want to use my main ( link ) and kick his ass.”

Now I’m even MORE confused. Wouldn’t that just be two seperate replays?

      1. If u wanna play rematches in smash with the same opponent, then you have to stick to the same character.

If you wanna change characters then you’ll lose your connection with your current opponent.

        Its not rocket science.

    3. “If u wanna play rematches in smash with the same opponent, then you have to stick to the same character.

If you wanna change characters then you’ll lose your connection with your current opponent.”

      …OH!!! NOW I get it.
I thought you meant replacing characters in Replay DATA. You know, the recorded matches that you can edit before an update ruins it? That’s why I found this “Play replays with the option of changing characters” thing confusing.

The more correct way of saying it would be “Play reMATCHES in Smash with the option to change characters”. It would’ve made more sense that way.

  2. What the hell? Why add the option to play with random strangers online, but not give us an option to play with friends? Not all of our friends live nearby, Nintendo.

      1. I think they learned from Miyamoto more than anyone. The whole reason why Mario Party STILL doesn’t have online multiplayer is because he thinks those games are much better playing in the same room. Reality is none of my offline friends would really want to play anything besides smash, and I’m lucky to get them to play something else like Mario Kart.

      1. If you’re able to connect with strangers via voice chat like you can in other games like Mario Kart 8, restricting contact from people you know and not people you don’t know whatsoever for safety concerns makes no sense whatsoever.

      2. Apparently the reason behind this is that playing with friends could compromise online leaderboards. They couldn’t have just disabled the online ranking when playing with friends? Who the hell cares about leaderboards in Mario Maker anyways?

  3. ||Comrades notice how they said “ss the game is now”, they may patch the friends loby later… ||

    1. I sure hope so. I’m betting the choice will get some backlash and they’ll add it in an update.

  4. I think this is a poor move, considering the reception that their online has been receiving. I am excited for this game, but this kind of thing feels like it should be in it, especially if you’re obligated to pay a fee for it. It seems like every time I learn more about the online subscription I am paying for, I am left disappointed. I would rather pay a higher fee and get more features.

  5. Sliver of hope from “as the game is now”. Especially if you happen across someone on randoms you enjoy playing with/against.

  6. Nintendo, this ISN’T the 90s anymore! My friends don’t all live just down the street and can gather at my place at a moment’s notice like they used to.

You’d think they would realize online play with friends would be a necessity by now but noooooo, not for Mario Maker.

Make some noise and make them change this, people!

  7. Man I was worried about this. Was looking forward to actually get to play with my friends that are across the country…now that goes out the window. Nintendo please change this!

  8. This is stupid logic, you can easily fix this by either…
    1. Making it so if players play together they are not counted towards any leader boards.
    2. Creating a leader board that’s dedicated to levels cleared by multiple players

For pete’s sake Nintendo, local gaming is not as big as you think it is anymore, once online swept the nation, it was inevitable local play was gonna take a massive hit.

  10. Screw online crap. The deal breaker for me was the fact that Nintendo stated this game will have no amiibo support. WHAT? Using my many amiibo in the first Super Mario Maker was pretty much the only fun I got out of the otherwise mediocre game. But without amiibo support at all, I WILL NEVER BUY THIS PIECE OF GARBAGE! I waste my money buying hundreds of amiibo, and can’t even use any of them. Great screwjob, Nintendo.

  12. Nintendo is in the freaking dark ages when it comes to online connectivity –

WHATS THE POINT of connecting with people if you can’t play with your friends?

That’s the first thing people think of when hearing about when hearing about online play: playing with FRIENDS
