The Elder Scrolls: Blades for Nintendo Switch will require online connection

Those of you hoping to play Bethesda’s The Elder Scrolls: Blades on the go with your Nintendo Switch system will sadly be out of luck as the company has revealed that it will require a constant internet connection. An offline mode is being considered by Bethesda but as it stands you’ll need access to the internet to play through the game.

Will the Switch version of the game still require a constant internet connection in order to play?

Lafferty: Yes. It will, but having an offline mode is something we definitely hear from a lot of people for the game in general, so that’s something we always constantly look at – like how would we do it. We want to make sure – the online game, we’re adding PvP in the fall, we want to make sure cheating isn’t an issue. So it’s like, how do we do an online mode that makes sense? Right now we’re requiring an internet connection, but in the future it’s something we may add if we can have a good solution for it.

Carofano: And there’s lots of things we’re going to be bringing to it as well like the Arena Mode – fighting your friends, visiting your friends’ towns. So there’s a lot of new features that are coming that will really take advantage of being connected, and being connected with your friends.

  1. And? Release the game on Switch anyway. Let the audience decide on whether they want to play the game or not in spite of the need of a constant online requirement. Dead by Daylight needs to be online constantly to be playable but I don’t see that game skipping Switch.

    1. I guess it was only a matter of time before even Bethesda who has supported the Switch well so far would start making excuses for why this or that won’t come to the system. And that’s what this is: an excuse.

      1. From what I understand the game is coming to switch? It’s just that you can’t play it on the go since it requires a connection to the internet (alternatively you can turn on hotspot and play it?

      2. it is coming to switch. the headline already says “The Elder Scrolls: Blades for Nintendo Switch will require online connection”
This is using pretty clear wording. They already announced Blades to come to consoles months ago, so its not even news. The only news here is that they would like to also have an offline-option which makes sense for Switch-users who often play portably and can’t connect to a Wifi.

The sentence “Those of you hoping to play Bethesda’s The Elder Scrolls: Blades on the go with your Nintendo Switch system will sadly be out of luck ” refers to the “on the go” and not the Switch at all.
Blades is a free to play game that probably runs pretty solid on the Switch and with Switchs install base might earn Bethesda some coins through microtransactions. So I don’t see any reason why it shouldn’t be released on Switch. Many F2P-games require an online connection.
