John from Digital Foundry on Sonic Frontiers Switch: “If you have another option, please consider that other option”

Sonic Frontiers review embargo finally lifted this afternoon and reviews have been decidedly mixed with some saying that game sets a solid foundation for the Sonic series in 3D and others saying that it’s a mess. Still most reviewers agree that running round the large environments as Sonic is genuinely good fun. What players need to know is that SEGA and Sonic Team did not supply the Nintendo Switch version of Sonic Frontiers for review. Reviewers were given the PlayStation 5 version of Sonic Frontiers. A fan asked Digital Foundry’s John Linneman about the Switch version and how it performs and he replied with the following.

Any spoilers on the Switch version? Safe to purchase?

“Uhhh…let’s just say, if you have another option, please consider that other option. If you only have Switch then you can still have fun, I think…somewhat.”

  1. I would never consider playing this on switch tbh. You could already see optimization issues on the other console demos.

On top of that, the underpowered specs of switch would make it unbearable for me at least. I would say at least ps4 or xbox one level is needed.

Good luck to those on the switch though. Would like to see how that runs, I’m not sure that they’ve shown it.

  2. Really scummy on Sega’s part to specifically choose not to supply the Switch version for review, as if they knew it was terrible but didn’t want people to cancel their pre-orders.

    1. Agreed! I guess because they know that Sonic games usually sell the best on Nintendo Consoles and they didn’t want to lose that money lol. Unfortunately I only have a Nintendo Switch, so I’ll be one of the unlucky ones playing this game :(. Hopefully it won’t be too bad and buggy.

        1. I can honestly say that you’re the only person I’ve seen defending the Switch version, the general consensus believes it’s awful. The footage I’ve personally seen of it only further proves that to me.

Hell, a lot of reviewers are saying that even the PS5 version has serious pop in issues, so the Switch version never stood a chance.

      1. The strange world...of Stranga

        isn’t there a show?

Boy, take a look at social media and see how the sonic fan base are attacking anyone who dares to criticize the game, if it isn’t a show for you…

        1. See that’s the crazy part I stop using social media like I use to (YouTube like the only thing I use now lol) , it’s a whole lot uglier everyone either wants to start drama or flame someone, I only go on twitter to save my video game/splatpost art to my phone other than that I don’t want nothing to do with social media.

    1. Please look up gameplay footage of the switch port bcus its actually a lot better then its made out to be, it graphically looks the worst but its runs surprisingly nicely.

  3. Digital Foundry, pls elaborate

You’d think he’d elaborate some, considering the people at Digital Foundry can tell 721p apart from 720p in excruciating detail. If they say the game is not enjoyable on Switch, it really doesn’t tell me enough to know whether I’d think the same thing after playing it.

  4. I expected the Switch version to be the worst version, but not even giving reviewers a Switch code is pretty bad. Goes to show how much faith they have for the Switch version.

Oh well. I was already going to get it on PS5, so it doesn’t matter too much for me

  5. I honestly dont think this port of the game is any at all bad it runs at a stable 30FPS and never really dips below it, it graphically looks the worst but if you only have a switch its a good version of the game to have

  6. It does run ok from the videos i just watched, there is a framerate test video on ContraNetwork channel if anyone is interested. Very low res and graphics but runs fine for most part, pop issues is a concern but i heard the same happen on PC and PS5 which could be an engine/optimization issue.

At this point i’m more curious if the game is worth it or not the asking price.

    1. Worth might really depend on if you think the Switch version of the game is any fun to play at all even with its downgrades aside, from what I’ve heard the games pretty lengthy as is
