Rumour: Activision were developing Donkey Kong game after Skylanders, since moved to EPD

Donkey Kong country: tropical freeze

A fresh new rumour has emerged today via Famiboards regarding the much loved Donkey Kong franchise. The project was apparently being handled by Activision’s Vicarious Visions and work started on the game in 2016. Legendary Nintendo designer Shigeru Miyamoto was overseeing the project and reportedly enjoyed what he saw. However, the game was eventually moved over to Nintendo EPD Tokyo in 2018, sometime after the release of the excellent Super Mario Odyssey. It is thought that the Donkey Kong game in development was a reboot and is a 3D platformer, rather than 2D, like Rare and Retro Studios Donkey Kong Country series. The new Donkey Kong game is thought to be targeting Nintendo’s next system and would fit in well with Nintendo’s plans to add a Donkey Kong-themed attraction area at Super Nintendo World.

  1. Any credibility or past track record to this leaker or is this article just a repost of one of the many dozens of “leak” forum posts made every day? Some background on track record should be a bare minimum journalistic standard for any “leak” like this.

    1. Yeah, I gotta agree with this. I went through so many different “leaks” during Smash 4’s and Ultimate’s hype cycles that now these kind of “news” articles just sound like filler to meet a quota of some kind

      1. Or they could had just started the sequel while Tropical Freeze developers were still at the office before they departed. They can do this with Zelda and Mario games but why not the other franchises remains to be a mystery.

    2. Yes there is a lot of credibility. For starters, none of this is new information, this has all been stated in certain groups (like DKVine) for years now. Some DKVine members actually move to the forum page to collaborate the rumors, as they have heard the same thing.

Then there is YouTuber Nintendo Prime, which has allegedly seen ~40 seconds of gameplay footage from the leaked game behind close doors. It was not released to the public because they are names on the game (of which includes some who still work in the industry).

      1. Track record is previously verified information credited to the source of the rumor, not a bunch of other forum posters also saying similar things. That is just as (if not more) likely piggy-backing off what others are saying, not proof that something is real. So again, any track record for any of this or is it just a repost of forum posters?

(Not to mention that the fact that other people are also posting this idea on forums doesn’t validate that THIS specific one is true. Adding a couple new details to existing rumors is what “leakers” on these forums LOVE to do and if anything that hurts credibility)

    1. BotW and SMO weren’t even made in the same engine. They can’t just smush together the two to create DK.

  2. Well, I guess at this point I already feel that it’s never too late with an insider to keep insisting on a rumor about a new Donkey Kong game… If they had their way, they could even make a chronology of all the Donkey Kong rumors that have come out in history.
