Take on Me by A-Ha was chosen for Super Mario Bros. Movie as it was No.1 when the NES launched with Mario in U.S

Take on Me by A-Ha may have seemed a slightly random song choice for the hit The Super Mario Bros. Movie by Nintendo and Illumination. However, the inclusion of the classic pop song in the smash hit animation was because the song was the No.1 music single in the United States on the day that the Nintendo Entertainment System launched in the United States on 18th October, 1985.

  1. I thought it fit well with the (Funky?) Kong driving the cart since he had some serious greaser-punk energy and that fits well with the music video for the song.

  2. Ended up factbombing this in the theater when I heard it. “Bet they chose this song cause it was the #1 Top 40 song on the weekend I was born”, and since no one was for certain when the SMB and NES was released exactly, they just went with the song at the 18-20th time period.
